Oktober 1996.

Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) would not like to be on the Defiant during “Starship Down” as we discuss this classic Star Trek submarine episode in the vein of “Balance of Terror” and “Wrath of Khan.” We celebrate the amazing narrative setting of the chaos of a damaged submarine/spaceship, we appreciate the humor of Quark and James Cromwell and we have some very strong thoughts on how concussions are portrayed in film. Matthew rants about Worf being a good manager even when the show depicts him as otherwise and Jo asks “How can you not be romantic about baseball?” As always, be prepared that spoilers may be lurking around every corner just like Garak on Empok Nor.Subscribe for weekly recaps of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, follow us online at @TerokNoir on Twitter for silly memes and polls and contact us by e-mail at teroknoirpod@gmail.com

Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Little Green Men Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to season 4, episode 7: Little Green Men. In this episode we learn Quark, Rom and Nog are the aliens that visited Roswell in 1947. I mean this actually makes a lot of sense and results in some very amusing gags. Little Green Men Quark's cousin gives him a ship as payment for an old debt, but the joke is on Quark as the ship is rigged to fail. When Rom tries a desperate act of Star Trek science to save them, they end up going back in time and landing in Roswell, NM in 1947. Some of this episode is cute (like this time travel stuff) and some of this episode is not (like tricking the female nurse into performing physical acts of pleasure on the Ferengi ears). So...yeah, was that really necessary? Another attempt at Ferengi humor...which seems to be funny to a very narrow audience. *SIGH* What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Starship Down Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to season 4, episode 6: Starship Down. This week we have an action packed episode where Sisko makes a risky decision putting the Defiant in crisis. When our crew is cut off from each, they scramble to save the ship from certain disaster! We have a lot of people on the ship that we've never seen before (spoiler, they're not all alive at the end of the episode) and we have special guest star James Cromwell NOT playing Zefram Cochrane. Starship Down Sisko takes the Defiant into the volatile atmosphere of a gas giant in attempt to rescue some Karemma from two Jem'Hadar cockroaches. And this decision proves costly when several crew members are quickly lost in a Jem'Hadar attack. Sisko suffers a potentially fatal head injury, Dax sucks in a lung full of a deadly gas and Worf is mean to some engineers. I mean come on, a lot is going on! What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. DS9 is tackling two different genres this week, and we're all along for the ride! First up, the "Defiant" hides in the clouds of a gas giant and things get all submarine movie in "Starship Down"! After that, temporal shenanigans have our favorite Ferengi and former Founder stuck in a 1950s B picture in "Little Green Men"! Also this week: an alternate title, sexy lamps, and Ferengi luck! Insects on Mars? Or Another Case of Pareidolia? Link: https://www.universetoday.com/144091/insects-on-mars-or-another-case-of-pareidolia/ An entomologist at the University of Ohio announced that he's discovered evidence of insect life on Mars. The scientist in question is Professor Emeritus William Romoser, a specialist in arbovirology and general/medical entomology. According to Professor Romoser, the evidence is in plain view, easily seen in internet images from Martian rovers. A press release from Ohio University states that Romoser has spent years examining images from Mars. He's found insect-like forms that are similar to bees, and also reptile-like forms, in both fossil and living form. Professor Romoser presented his evidence at the November 19th national meeting of the Entomological Society of America. This work has not been published in any peer-reviewed scientific journal. “There has been and still is life on Mars,” Romoser said in a press release. “There is apparent diversity among the Martian insect-like fauna which display many features similar to Terran insects that are interpreted as advanced groups – for example, the presence of wings, wing flexion, agile gliding/flight, and variously structured leg elements.” According to Romoser, a number of photos show clear forms of life, even though Curiosity is investigating things in a much more incremental, rigorous way. At the end of the press release, Professor Emeritus Romoser is quoted: “The evidence of life on Mars presented here provides a strong basis for many additional important biological as well as social and political questions. It also represents a solid justification for further study.” But this “evidence” is also a strong basis for reminding us what pareidolia is, how it works, and how, without vigorous scientific fail-safes, it can lead us into a world of premature conclusions. SpaceX has lost its first Starship prototype—is this a big deal? Link: https://arstechnica.com/science/2019/11/spacex-has-lost-its-first-starship-prototype-is-this-a-big-deal/ On Wednesday afternoon, SpaceX loaded nitrogen into a prototype version of its Starship vehicle. The exercise, at the company's facilities near Boca Chica Beach in South Texas, represented the first significant pressurization test of the vehicle fuel tanks. About halfway during the process, however, some sort of failure occurred as the top bulkhead of the vehicle broke apart and went flying away. This was followed by a large, white cloud of smoke and vapor emanating from the interior of the vehicle, which eventually cleared to reveal a dented, but still shiny Starship. This was the same vehicle the company revealed in late September. SpaceX sought to play down the accident, noting this was a "max" pressurization test to stress the system. No one was hurt, the company said, and it was not a serious setback in the development of the ambitious vehicle. The company's founder and lead technical designer, Elon Musk, later said on Twitter that this prototype had "some value as a manufacturing pathfinder," but that the flight design of the vehicle would be "quite different." The nomenclature SpaceX uses is "Mark," as in the vehicle the that was severely damaged Wednesday was Mark 1, with Mark 2 being built in Florida, and work already beginning on Mark 3 in Texas. It is possible this "Mark 3" vehicle will fly into orbit sometime in 2020. This "fail early, fail forward" strategy allows a company to move more quickly and improve its design along the way. It also results in public failures, such as the all-explodey rocket Wednesday. This cannot exactly strengthen customer confidence in Starship, but given that failures are baked into the development process, it does not diminish Starship's overall prospects. Star Trek DS9 S4E07 Starship Down
Batten the hatches and hold fast this week as we try to survive "Starship Down"!New York Times bestselling author David Mack returns to the show to discuss one of two DS9 episodes he co-wrote with writing partner John J. Ordover. The Defiant is attacked by Jem'Hadar warships while on a trade mission and is critically disabled. Now, Chief O'Brien and a crew of enlisted men must keep the ship afloat in the atmosphere of a deadly gas giant . . . all while Sisko lies close to death, Bashir and Dax are trapped below decks, Quark and Farmer Hoggett have to disarm a torpedo, and the Jem'Hadar are still out there! In the TNG/DS9/VOY days of Trek, many freelancers and young writers tried selling scripts to Paramount and they made them attractive by presenting brisk, money-saving "bottle show" concepts. This is NOT one of those scripts. Starship Down starts with a bang and continues with a series of bangs, exposing the crew to mortal peril and forcing our heroes to confront their inadequacies in order to save the day. During our discussion, we talk about the process of writing for Trek and for the small screen, how Dave met John and how they honed their process, the episode's roots in "Das Boot", creating enlisted character and following them into the Pocket novels, giving Sisko a "Kirk" moment, teaching Worf how to lead, doing it all over again only bloodier in "Wildfire", and how Dave got the nickname "The Angel of Death!"Dave also shares some anecdotes about his time working on Trek TV, the benefit of lunch networking, burning your old drafts, wanting liquid metal but getting gas, writing Tyler in and out, working in Jesus's carpentry shop, Disco season 2 running Mack's Greatest Hits, whether Star Trek: Picard will torpedo the Trek lit universe, what it takes to defeat Section 31, and the lost "Cheers" Quark episode!Murder, blackmail, war crimes . . . fun!Pre-order David's new TNG novel, Collateral Damage, available October 8th!https://amzn.to/2LEGGaSTalk about shift changes with us on Facebook and Twitter and our Facebook group!http://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/eistpod/http://www.twitter.com/eistpodBuy us dud torpedoes on Patreon!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodSubscribe to the show on iTunes!https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/enterprising-individuals/id1113165661?mt=2

We've made it to the end of the fourth season of DS9! It's been Clay's first "full" season of a Trek series (he missed only Rejoined and Starship Down) so we get his thoughts about watching 24 episodes of a single series. We also discuss a YouTube trailer for the fourth season, and try to determine how so much could have changed without us realizing it. The fourth season of DS9 has been the best single year of any Trek series to this point, so we wrap things up with a discussion of our favorite moments and memories! Are you looking for older episodes? Find this and every other episode at The Pensky Podcast! Thanks for listening. When the Jem'Hadar trap the Defiant in the atmosphere of a gas giant, the crew must deal with various crises of both the technical and the personal! Another episode in the long line of "disaster" episodes of Star Trek, Starship Down puts a uniquely DS9 spin on the proceedings. A series of vignettes provide insight into a variety of characters, and they also provoke some questions. Iona joins the show to discuss why water is more terrifying than gas, the spiritual nature of Kira, and Worf learning how to boss people around! Are you looking for older episodes? Jason Majeski joins us once again for an incredibly meandering discussion of that episode where the Defiant crew all gets separated from each other during an emergency and Quark and James Cromwell learn to overcome their differences and diffuse a warhead together! But even though this is a good episode, we just can’t stop talking about EVERYTHING else, from Quantum Leap to Battlestar Galactica (old AND new), to late 90‘s Arnold Schwarzenegger thrillers, to our memories of where we were and what we were doing when 9/11 happened to lord knows what else. But anyways, Starship Down! It’s a fun one, as we have to keep reminding ourselves. So, enjoy listening to us talk about it and by the end, you too will find yourself saying, “That’ll do, pig.”
So, let’s pretend that you’re an interplanetary political alliance that encounters a hostile species. Would you continue to send starships into their territory? “Starship Down” indicates that the answer is yes. Later, in “Little Green Men”, the Ferengi encounter 20th Century humans, and are suitably impressed. iTunes Google Play RSS

Commentary: Trek Stars: The Work of Star Trek Creators Outside of Star Trek
Mack, Part 1: Trek. David Mack has written close to 30 Star Trek novels and stories over the course of his career. But before all of that, Mack had a hand in writing two Deep Space Nine adventures for the small screen. Along with his writing partner John J. Ordover, Mack wrote the fourth season episode, "Starship Down," and wrote the story upon which Ronald D. Moore's teleplay for season seven's "It's Only a Paper Moon" was based. In this episode of Commentary: Trek Stars , Mike and Max are joined by Matt of The Delta Quadrant and The Nerd Party to look at Mack's television work. We discuss "Starship Down," "It's Only a Paper Moon," and the original concept for that episode, "Everybody Goes to Quark's." We also preview Mack's original novel The Calling, which we will cover next week. Hosts Mike Schindler and Max Hegel Editor and Producer Mike Schindler Associate Producers Become one! Covering “Starship Down” and “Little Green Men.”
This week, we return from our Halloween X-Files break to discuss Deep Space Nine, with "Starship Down," "Little Green Men," and "The Sword of Kahless." We also talk about Elementary's latest, "An Unusual Arrangment," then close out the show by talking about another great Friday Night Lights episode, "Nevermind."Next week: LOST! gets mean, with "Ji Yeon," "Meet Kevin Johnson," and "The Shape of Things to Come." Seriously, these three episodes have a fucking body count.
[Warning: There are some pretty big Breaking Bad spoilers in this episode. Like, all the spoilers up to the second episode of the last season. So, if you wish to remain unspoiled, stop listening at around the 1:13:00 mark, then skip to about 1:28:00, and you should be fine. There. You've been warned. No complaining.]It's Halloween, and we're celebrating it at the Podcastulacra by revisiting our old haunt, The X-Files. You may remember us talking about this show for a while last year, before Robby made it clear he had zero interest in continuing; this week, we look at "Die Hand Die Verletzt," "Grotesque," and "Bad Blood" to honor the spooky season, and Robby is reminded, again, why he insisted we stop watching The X-Files in the first place. Before that, we talk about the most recent two episodes of Elementary, "Poison Pen" and "Ancient History," and after that, we briefly discuss Robby's binge watching of Breaking Bad and then check in on Friday Night Lights, with "It's Different for Girls."Regularly scheduled programming returns next week, as we pick up Deep Space Nine and discuss "Starship Down," "Little Green Men," and "The Sword of Kahless."
We have a bunch of incredible television to talk about this week, folks. Good, good stuff from all our shows. And, of course, a Kate episode. First, Elementary gets deep in "We Are Everyone," eschewing their more procedural elements something truly emotionally rewarding. Then, LOST! hits us with (sigh) a Kate episode, "Eggtown," but then brings right back up again with the glorious "The Constant," which J. says is his favorite episode of the entire series. It's so good, in fact, that not even the disappointingly-familiar "The Other Woman" can bring us down. Especially when Friday Night Lights brings us "Full Hearts," a triumph that's nothing but wall-to-wall goodness. Robby also talks about Glee's "The Quarterback," as we find out if the writers figured out a way to write around the death of one our their star actors. Next time: Deep Space Nine, with "Starship Down," "Little Green Men," and "The Sword of Kahless." Also, Robby's been watching Breaking Bad, so J. might throw the rest of the show out in favor of that. TUNE IN TO FIND OUT!
