In honor of Black History Month, Imara digs into the archives to unearth the incredible stories of two 19th century Black trans women. Archivist and scholar Riah Kinsey discusses what he's discovered about Mary Jones, a sex worker and pick-pocket who made her way into New York City tabloids throughout the 1830's. Imara and Riah piece together what we know about her remarkable life and wonder about what else there might be to discover. Then cultural organizer and filmmaker Mickaela Bradford discusses her new short film “Under False Colors.” It tells the story of Frances Thompson, the first known trans woman to testify in front of the U.S. Congress.
May the Light of God Shine Over You! "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." John 1:5 May the light of God shine brightly over you today and always. As you embark on this life journey, remember you are never alone. Just as God guided the Israelites through the wilderness with a pillar of fire by night, His presence will lead you securely through even the darkest times (Exodus 13:21). Have faith that He illuminates your path, making way for hope and resolution in areas where there seemed to be none. Let His radiance dissolves any fears or doubts clouding your heart. There is a beautiful story about Mary Jones from Wales, who inspires us with her unwavering faith. She walked over twenty-five miles barefoot to buy a Bible because she longed to have God's word at her fingertips. Her determination reflects God's promise that when we seek Him earnestly, we will find Him. Trust that as Mary did, God's word will illuminate every step you take and fill your life with purpose and direction. Jeremiah 29:13 says, "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." Be encouraged by the words of Helen Keller: Keep your face to the sunshine, and you cannot see a shadow. Embrace God's eternal promises, knowing that shadows cannot dim His brilliance shining upon you. Though life's challenges may seem daunting, let this be a testimony to your courage and resilience in divine timing. Remember, God works within us beyond our understanding, so completely trust in His guidance (Proverbs 3:5- 6). I pray for peace to envelop you like a gentle morning mist, joy to spring forth afresh within your heart each day, and wisdom—His treasured gift—to direct every decision before you. In all seasons, continue walking boldly under Christ's glory, and may your steps be channels awash in love, leading towards brighter horizons unknown yet perfectly crafted by His hand. Isaiah 60:1 says, “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.” Amen Prayer for the Day! I pray that the light of Christ within you shines ever so brightly, illuminating the path before you with divine clarity. May your spirit be akin to a city set on a hill, which cannot be hidden. Just as the dawn dispels the night and ushers in a new day, may any darkness surrounding you flee at the presence of God's radiant glory. Your light shall never go dim; instead, it will grow ever clearer until the full light of day. In Jesus' name. Amen. https://maglife.org --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pastor-divineo/support

What we're talking about The Art of Writing Short Stories The Role of Psychology in Storytelling The Intersection of Humor and Loss The Art of Writing Short Stories Mary Jones sheds light on the unique challenges and rewards of writing short stories. She emphasizes that while the shorter format might seem easier, it requires precision and clarity, as every word must be purposeful to convey the full depth of a character's life or a pivotal moment. The Role of Psychology in Storytelling Mary discusses how her background in psychology has enriched her understanding of human nature, allowing her to create more nuanced and relatable characters. Her studies have provided her with insights into why people behave the way they do, which she weaves into her narratives. The Intersection of Humor and Loss Mary shares her perspective on the balance between humor and sadness in her stories. In her stunning debut short story collection, The Goodbye Process (Zibby Books, 2024), Mary Jones uses her distinctive voice to examine the painful and sometimes surreal ways we say goodbye. The stories--which range from tender and heartbreaking to unsettling and darkly funny--will push you out of your comfort zone and ignite intense emotions surrounding love and loss. A woman camps out on the porch of an ex-lover who has barricaded himself inside the house; a preteen girl caught shoplifting finds herself in grave danger; a Los Angeles real estate agent falls for a woman who helps him detach from years of dramatic plastic surgery; a man hires a professional mourner to ensure his wife's funeral is a success. Again and again, Jones's characters find themselves facing the ends of things: relationships, health, and innocence. We're calling this episode “The Midwest Episode” because we recorded it while both of us were visiting the Midwest. Emily is spending time with her daughter and granddaughter in Michigan, and Chris was visiting her mom in Chicago. Newer listeners might not realize that although we both now live in Connecticut, we are transplants from the Midwest. Emily is originally from Ohio, and Chris is from Illinois. Does any of this matter? Who knows. What does matter is that we've read some good books and short stories over the last two weeks. Books include HOT AIR by Marcy Dermansky, SO THIRSTY by Rachel Harrison, and SULWE by Lupita Nyong'o, illustrated by Vashti Harrison. Short stories are “The Hexter Girls” from GOODBYE PROCESS: STORIES by Mary Jones and “The Many Taste Grooves of the Chang Family” by Allison King via Levar Burton Reads. We also had some lovely #biblioadventures to libraries, bookstores, and a historic building with a literary past. Happy Listening!

The recent Earnings Call held by executives at Jones Soda on Thursday, March 14th, 2024, offered some important insights into the company's performance over the past quarter, as well as their strategies for future growth. Financially, the company showcased an unforeseen resilience against a backdrop of decreasing net revenue, primarily due to a drop in sales from foodservice outlets and grocery channels. Despite facing financial challenges, the Mary Jones line, one of their business units, has achieved significant revenue in the excedence of $1 million in 2023. The company further displayed the effort to maintain cost discipline, targeting consistent gross margins in the mid-thirties, underscoring their commitment to profitability. CEO of Jones Soda, David Knight, shared during the recent call with investors, "As I continue to become further engrained in the operations of Jones Soda and see the opportunities at hand, I have become more and more confident in our ability to take this company to new heights." This comment outlined his determination to deliver excellent taste and growth via both innovation and marketing, setting the stage for broader scale achievement that has been pursued by Jones Soda before. In terms of product development, Jones Soda is focusing on key initiatives, the creation of a new Foodservice division being one among them. This strategic decision aims at capitalizing on extensive growth opportunities across multiple channels. The company's commitment to catering to evolving consumer preferences is evident in their innovative product launches, such as Nuka-Cola Victory and Spiked Jones. Regarding consumer trends, it was acknowledged during the earnings call that there is growing consumer demand for THC-infused beverages, an area where the Mary Jones brand can potentially thrive. In response to these changing consumer behaviors, Jones Soda has plans to extend their THC-infused beverage offerings to Ontario and other provinces. Despite the organization's present challenges, Knight voiced optimism regarding their future plans, emphasizing their pursuit towards delivering unique and compelling product offerings across a range of channels and categories. Conclusively, the company has future plans to strengthen their Foodservice division, introduce flavored soda water, launch new special release flavors, and also raise their presence of the Mary Jones brand. The company also plans to broaden its geographical reach and examine stock uplift options, in addition to generating additional capital to support further growth. To conclude, based on the information provided in the Earnings Call, Jones Sodas has shown potential for growth through their focused approach towards innovation, strategic capital allocation, and intent to branch out into various markets. However, one should remember that successful execution of their planned initiatives, coupled with an expanded product portfolio, will be vital in delivering shareholder value and achieving sustainable growth. Moreover, their clear strategic roadmap presents them a certain advantage but navigating the changing beverage market will be the ultimate determinant in their continued journey upwards. Implicit to all these factors is understanding that these claims and outlook are based on what Jones Soda company stated or acknowledged to investors during the earnings call. In episode 32 I am chatting with Robert Joseph Jones, new friend and owner of the amazing shop, Ysbrydoliaeth - Curiosity Shop / Magasin de curiosités. We discussed our shared backgrounds of Welsh and Deitsch along with Welsh identity, Robert's background in languages as well as teaching and writing poetry.Robert Jones, comes originally from Monroe County in northeastern Pennsylvania born of a Pennsylvania-German and Welsh family. He spent much of his formative years with his maiden aunts who were among the last of the Victorians and practiced Braucherei, Pennsylvania-German folk magic. He spent many years teaching French, German, Spanish, linguistics and literature at a small community college in Central New York before relocating to Lunenburg in the Northeast Kingdom with his spouse and three Cardigan Welsh Corgis (Marigold, Hibiscus and Wisteria).During his previous career, he spent a great deal of time traveling, especially to Wales, and New Orleans where he went to collaborate with harpist, journalist and renowned inn-keeper Barbara Lefèvre Martin on matters of Welsh independence. It was there that he became acquainted with Kutani pottery while wandering through the French Quarter after getting buzzed on chicory coffee at the old Café de Paris next to the Cabildo on Jackson Square. Barbara and he had many adventures in and around New Orleans that included Voodoo practitioners, visiting haunted houses, journalism, plotting and tracking down the ever elusive Bedwyr ap Dafydd, a self-exiled Welsh immigré and descendant of one of the great bardic families of Wales, the last known location of whom was a bar in the Lower 9th Ward before Hurricane Katrina. On his trips to Wales he became friends with Mary Jones (no relation) and her sister Olwen Thomas of Tai'n Lôn, a remote farming village in the foothills of the Snowdonia Mountains where English was rarely spoken. He made the region his base to travel elsewhere in Europe including Brittany, England, Catalonia, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, France, and Spain.Even his connection to Argentina comes through Wales. In the Chubut Province of Patagonia is Gwladfa, a Welsh colony from whence hails the former editor of the Welsh North-American newspaper Ninnau for which Robert wrote off-and-on for many years beginning in the 1980's.Learn more:https://curiosityshop.us/speakwelsh.orghttps://www.madog.org/https://www.facebook.com/ysbrydoliaethhttps://www.instagram.com/ysbrydoliaeth71/The documentary that I was speaking about: The Story of Wales by BBC https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00mlrq9The Welsh poet that I quoted: Gwyneth Lewishttp://www.gwynethlewis.com/index.shtmlGraphic Designer for Ysbrydoliaeth:https://flekvt.com/

Mary Jones could sing just like Aretha Franklin. One night, a James Brown impersonator saw her perform at a Motown tribute show - and thought he could take her on tour and trick audiences into believing she was the real Queen of Soul. Tonight we have the owners and roasters of JoJo's Java House in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic. Jeff and Mary Jones moved from Alabama to the Dominican Republic with their 5 kids in 2020. They quickly identified the need for a specialty coffee shop in their new town. JoJo's Java House (named after their daughter Jocelyn Jones) opened last year. While not part of the original plan, Jeff also added roasting to his plate, and is roasting all of the coffee sold and consumed at JoJo's.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/god-country-coffee/donations
I greet you in Jesus' precious name!It is Friday morning, the 28th of April, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.” Proverbs 13:12“Those who sow in tearsShall reap in joy.'Psalm 126:5“Weeping may endure for a night,But joy comes in the morning.”Psalm 30:5We must never, ever give up. One preacher said, “Tough times don't last, but tough people do.” Another version of Proverbs 13:12 says: Unrelenting disappointment leaves you heartsick but a sudden good break can turn life around.” Another one says: “When hope's dream seems to drag on and on, the delay can be depressing, but when at last your dream comes true, life's sweetness will satisfy your soul.” Remember, anything worth having is worth waiting for. You have heard the adage, “Easy come, easy go.” If it does not cost anything, it is not worth anything.” You know, there is a story that has inspired me (I think you know by now how much I love the Bible), and this is the story of a young Welsh girl by the name of Mary Jones. When she was 16 years old, she walked 50 kilometres, barefoot across the rough Welsh countryside, to buy a Bible. She had saved up her money for six years to buy this Bible. When she arrived at the minister's house, he told her that they were all sold. This young girl was devastated, to say the least. She broke down in tears. The minister was so overcome by this young girl's hunger for God's Holy Word, that he gave her a Bible that he had reserved for somebody else. The desire of this girl so impacted this minister that he started the Bible Society of Wales, which started Bible Societies right around the world.Don't give up today because I want to tell you, God will see you through. I can give so many testimonies of that. Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.

Last week, two Baton Rouge area elementary school teachers were recognized with the Milken Educator Award, a nationwide honor sometimes described as “the Oscars of Teaching.” Today, the two teachers, Dereka Duncan and Elise Frederic, tell us more about this accomplishment. When a hurricane strikes, it's not just the immediate wind and rain damage that causes concern. Many are also forced to grapple with flooding, and often, as in the case of Hurricane Katrina, the water rises and stays for days at a time. Now, the LSU Department of Oceanography and Coastal Science and the Center for Computation and Technology are working to better predict flooding after hurricanes with a new computer modeling system. Associate professor George Xue tells us how this modeling will help communities prepare for disasters. With carnival season underway we are going back to the archives to hear some of our favorite Mardi Gras stories from years past. Today, in collaboration between WWNO's Thomas Walsh and StoryCorps, we bring you a 2015 conversation between two Mardi Gras Indians, Littdell “Queen B” Bannister and Mary Jones, who discuss sewing personal pride into each stitch of their costumes. While Rachel is on maternity leave, we're re-running some of our best and most popular episodes of The Bottom-Up Revolution podcast. This episode from August of 2021 is a fascinating story about a Strong Towns member who literally bought a road in order to try and make it safer. Mary Moriarty Jones lives in Honolulu, where plenty of roads are privately owned, which is what made this story possible. You'll hear a lot more about that process and why Jones is so passionate about making this street safer for her children to walk to school. But since we recorded, we also have an update to share: Jones emailed a couple months ago to say that she successfully transferred ownership of the road back to the city and county, who now plan to add sidewalks and crossings to hopefully make the street safer for everyone who uses it. This is ultimately the story of someone who was so dedicated to the Strong Towns mission and so believed in the cause of safer streets that she did everything she possibly could to make it happen. We hope that those who come after her do not have to fight quite so hard just to ensure they can safely walk to work or school without risking their lives. But we're thankful and inspired by advocates like Mary Jones. Check out our Safe and Productive Streets campaign if you want to connect more with these efforts. ADDITIONAL SHOW NOTES A couple of articles about Mary Jones's quest for safer streets, from Civil Beat: “This Diamond Head Mom Found An Unusual Way To Fight City Hall“ and “Diamond Head Mom Who Took Over Road Riles Neighbors By Charging For Parking.” Safe and Productive Streets campaign page. We're closing out 2022 with a real treat. The legendary Tom Paxton joins Dan over the phone, and Dan is truly starstruck. We talk about Tom's favorite Randy songs, plus Woody Guthrie, Dylan, Dave Van Ronk, Chad Mitchell, and a whole lot of Pete Seeger. This week Roy Jenkins is in conversation with Siân Rees, the new Head of Bible Society in Wales who's less than two weeks in the job. The charity has its roots in Wales with Mary Jones's 26 mile walk to Bala in mid-Wales over 200 years ago to buy a bible in her own language. Today, Bible Society (formerly known as the British and Foreign Bible Society) is finding new ways of telling (as the hymn goes) the old, old story. Only this month the society has released a new video “The Bible in four minutes”; a spoken animation written and narrated by Welsh poet Dai Woolridge. In this programme Siân Rees tells Roy of her upbringing and her commitment to recapture today the kind of passion for the Bible as Mary Jones showed 200 years ago. www.biblesociety.org.uk/wales
In this episode, we finish out Mary's story, and talk about her experiences in surviving the Tulsa Race Massacre. As church leaders in the second chair of your ministry, can you handle a no from your pastor? There is tension at times between ambition and submission, and in this episode, I have a conversation with Temi Pope from Union Church where we talk about being faithful in the second chair. We also had a great listener question come in from Mary Jones, asking how to lead individuals who have higher skills than your own.
Bohb discusses launching the Mary Jones cannabis-infused drinks brand and partnerships with Mike Tyson, Julianna Peña and Devlin DeFrancesco.
