Episode 181: Sacramento Beer Week 2024 (w/ Chris Keeton & David Weiss)

Host Ben Rice travels to Sacramento, CA, to sit down with Sacramento Area Brewers Guild president Chris Keeton (head brewer at Alaro) and vice president David Weiss (brewer at Blue Note) to talk about Sacramento Beer Week 2024 (happening April 26-May 5). We discuss this year's iteration of the Rising Together guild collaboration (among other things). In past years, it's been an IPA using certain ingredients, but this year, in honor of the Sacramento Brewers Showcase happening on Saturday May 4 (at Heart Health Park), they're honoring May the 4th Be With You, by letting breweries choose the Light Side or Dark Side, allowing for a wide range of beer styles and flavors, and reminding consumers of the vast array of beers available in the beer scene and what differentiates each brewery. Plus! Taprooms and bars are back in business at Sac Beer Week 2024! Internal strife has diminished that in recent years, but those are the sins of the father, not the current administration, who is working hard to recapture the spirit of Sac Beer Week. This episode is not only a celebration of what Beer Week and the beer scene once was, but an exploration of where it's going and how it will handle a more educated and less alcohol-friendly next generation of consumers. We also shout out some people who keep the scene alive and show that, even when day-to-day excitement may be down, there's still a strong supportive and passionate base of brewers, marketers, and drinkers. David Weiss damn near gets emotional on the episode and Chris shows why he was put in charge in the first place. We're running a monthly series called "Food for Thought," in-depth conversations with groundbreakers who run farms, restaurants, wineries, breweries and bars around California and are shaking up the way we eat and drink. Our fourth talk is with the Brewmasters, two people who've won lots of awards for creating some of some of the best craft beer to come out of Northern California. One is a seasoned vet who helped a small Chico-based brewery grow into a billion-dollar company. The other is a young whippersnapper who, 13 months after moving his beers from the garage into a professional setup, won two gold medals at the California State Fair. To celebrate Octoberfest, we raised some pints and celebrated California craft beer with a great discussion by these two guys who've helped to make it famous. PANELISTS * Steve Dresler - the just-retired Brewmaster of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., who has overseen the development and production of almost all of its new beers for more than 30 years, and has won the the brewery eight World Beer Cup awards and 31 Great American Beer Fest medals during that time. * Michael Mraz - the owner and founder of Mraz Brewing Company in El Dorado Hills, who went from homebrewer to superstar homebrewer (he was crowned Homebrewer of the Year at the California State Fair just two years after starting the hobby), then went from professional brewer to superstar professional brewer in 13 months (he won two gold medals for his Belgian Tripel and red ale at the CA State Fair). Here's the final "Icebreaker" mini-podcast focused on California Groundbreakers in the beer industry, in advance of our live "Brewmasters" event on October 11 . Like many beer lovers, Kate Whelan started out as a homebrewer. But she was tired of talking only with guys about beer. So she co-founded HopBroads nearly five years ago, a group focused on attracting more women to the craft beer culture. She's also a member of Pink Boots Society, which supports and promotes women working in the craft brewing industry ( one superstar Pink Boots member is Crooked Lane Brewery head brewmaster Teresa Psuty, who just won a Gold for her Wobblor Dopplebock at the Great American Beer Festival). Now she's the director of Sacramento Beer Week, a major brewfest scheduled for May 2018 that's guaranteed to draw tens of thousands of people. That means Whelan is in charge of turning around a once-rudderless ship and boosting Sacramento's cred -- and its 60-plus breweries -- to beer drinkers statewide. Whelan took time out during a busy wedding season (her official day job is events planner) to talk about her career in beer, and how women are making a big impact -- both as workers and as drinkers -- in California's craft beer scene. PODCAST TIMEFRAME * O to 1 min - Intro to Icebreakers -- and Kate Whelan * 1 min - Whelan's most memorable beer (so memorable she had three in a row) * 2:30 min - How a scavenger hunt set her down the path to a career in beer, and founding HopBroads * 6:35 min - The pros and cons of homebrewing with a man in the kitchen * 7:55 min - Sacramento's chapter of Pink Boots Society -- and its medal-winning members * 10 min - A woman's place in the California craft beer scene * 14:50 min - Starting Sacramento Beer Week from scratch -- and making it better and bigger than ever * 17:55 min - Whelan's take on the future of NorCal's craft beer scene * 19:50 min - And her advice for women to get into the beer scene and kill it

Never intended for release, we bring this to you, because SF and Sacramento Beer Week make all brewers way too busy to take some time to talk to me about beer. So here it is: the unreleased, demo tracks you never knew you wanted! We do a bottle share in host Ben Rice's apartment and talk BUI's (not IBUs), cicerone tests, comedy,  randomAdam Sandler appearances, and how not to pet a cat. Plus we spitball potential names for the podcast! It was a weird experience, re-listening to life 2.5 years ago, not knowing what this podcast was even going to be. I laughed out loud a few times and I hope you do too. We'll be back soon with all new episodes! In the meantime, enjoy all those beautiful beer weeks and be sure to follow Barley & Me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at @barleyandmepod, and subscribe on iTunes, GooglePlay, Stitcher, or Podbean! Host Ben Rice sits down with event directors Jennifer Land Irwin (Art of Beer, January 27) and Kate Whelan (Sacramento Beer Week, March 2-March 12) to discuss the ins and outs of planning major beer events, while sipping on Christmas ales at Sacramento's Hideaway Bar & Grill, a lovely dive bar on Franklin Blvd. We get into the nitty gritty of event planning, the triumphs and tribulations, plus the differences in a one-night only event at one location versus a week-and-a-half long excursion at dozens of venues. We'll also chat about the Women's March, Stranger Things, classic and new musicals, and how to add an exciting game show element to up the ante at beer events. Plus Gilmore Girls! And politics. Also, Kate's beer group, Hop Broads, and their Beer Week beer design. And everything under the sun, until we get forced to shut up because of inclement weather because I chose to record this outside. Thank you to Hideaway's owner Mariah York-Carr for giving us the space to do this. Enjoy! Host Ben Rice sits down with Tap-It Brewing's head brewer Ryan Aikens and their sales rep Paige Howery, along with Mussetter Distributor's Therese Olsen, at Dad's Kitchen on Freeport, during Sacramento Beer Week. We discussed pretty much the entirety of Tap-It's beer lineup, the sudden upswing in fruit-additive IPA's, pranks Ryan plays on drinks looking for ABV instead of taste, an ode to prior Barley & Me guest Eric Nordby, getting into beer as a youth, Ryan's obsession with Formica, pig roasts, and, of course, restaurant etiquette. Like Paige always says, "It's just beer." Which means there's oh so much more than meets the eye. Enjoy! On this episode, host Ben Rice speaks with Sacramento Beer Week creator Dan Scott and Device Brewing's owner/brewmaster Ken Anthony. We touch on tough, sobering current events topics before we begin our discussions on beer and the beer industry. We cover what goes into brewing a lager style using ale equipment, lessons learned at GABF, how the name and style of a beer can affect sales, how the sale of a brewery to larger corporation can affect beer, collaborations past & future, and so much more. It's very beer-centric and intriguing. I hope you enjoy it.As always, you can find us on iTunes, Stitcher, and Podbean. Follow the podcast on Twitter & Instagram @barleyandmepod.
