Your relationships are reshaping your biology in ways that diet and exercise alone cannot fix, and the science behind it will change how you think about longevity, metabolism, and what it actually means to be healthy. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Dr. Molly Maloof, a physician and one of the most innovative voices in personalized medicine, functional medicine, and human performance. Since 2012, she has advised or consulted for over 50 companies across digital health, consumer health, and biotechnology. She pioneered a course on healthspan at Stanford University and founded Adamo Bioscience, a company dedicated to unlocking the science of love as a pathway to healing and human connection. Dr. Maloof brings a rare combination of clinical depth, biohacking credibility, and entrepreneurial range to one of the most overlooked conversations in longevity. Together, Dave and Dr. Maloof dig into the neurobiology of love and attachment, the hormonal drivers of the sex drive and pair bonding, and how chronic isolation wrecks your metabolism at the cellular level. They explore the cell danger response and how toxic relationships, mold exposure, and trauma can lock your cells into a self-protection mode that blocks healing. They also cover psychedelics as hormetic tools, oxytocin as nature's medicine, the placebo response, peptide therapy for mitochondrial repair and anti-aging, and why regenerative medicine is about to rewrite the rules of human lifespan. If you are serious about biohacking your body from the inside out, this episode is essential. You'll Learn: Why human connection is a biological necessity, not a lifestyle preference, and what isolation does to your mitochondria and metabolism How the three neurobiological drives of sex, romantic love, and attachment are wired into your hormones and what happens when they go wrong What the cell danger response is, why it gets stuck, and which peptides, supplements, and therapies help break the cycle How oxytocin drives wound healing, immune function, and the placebo response Why psychedelics work as hormetic love drugs and how they reproduce the neurobiology of romantic love The top peptides for mitochondrial repair, brain optimization, and telomere biology Why Dave and Dr. Maloof believe we have already reached longevity escape velocity How AI is accelerating precision medicine, protein folding breakthroughs, and the future of anti-aging therapeutics Why fasting, breathwork, neurofeedback, and somatic therapies all converge on the same biological reset mechanism How to build the adaptive capacity and bioenergetic reserves to bounce back from anything Thank you to our sponsors! - Danger Coffee | Grab yours at DangerCoffee.com and use code DAVEPOD at checkout for 15% off. - Amp | If you're ready to make fitness fit into your life, go to amp.ai to check it out - Puori | Go to Puori.com/DAVE or use code DAVE at checkout to get 32% off your Puori Fish Oil subscription. In this week's podcast, I sit down again with Dr. Adam Maloof, Princeton professor of Geosciences and athletics fellow for the baseball team. This time he's tackling one of the most overlooked problems in baseball analytics: pitch classification. If you've ever looked at a scouting report and thought, “This guy doesn't throw seven pitches,” you're not alone. Dr. Maloof explains why existing pitch tagging data from popular systems (TrackMan, Synergy, and MLB's StatCast) are often inconsistent, inaccurate, and difficult to use for data analysis.Together, we discuss:Why MLB's pitch classifier is trained on what pitchers call their own pitches (and why that's a problem for hitters and analysts)How Dr. Maloof analyzed nearly 5 million college pitches using a “blank slate” approach inspired by geologyThe “color wheel” analogy: why pitches within a category (fastballs, breaking balls, changeups) exist on a continuous spectrum with no natural boundariesHow Princeton's staff uses reclassified data for scouting, pitch design, and pitching machine programmingPitch tunneling: what it is, how they measure it, and how they're teaching it to pitchersThe role of arm slot, biometrics, and what's next for this researchRead Dr. Maloof's article on pitch tagging: How to Classify a Pitchhttps://medium.com/sabr-tooth-tigers/how-to-classify-a-pitch-a4805ce35082Connect with Patrick Jones Baseball:On X: @pjonesbaseball

Brians Questions: My sister and brother-in-law would like to recruit/hire me to install/build built-in bank of drawers and shelves for them for their new home. The only relatable experience I have with this type of woodworking is building a face frame cabinet and constructing some under the bed drawer storage, each of which I have done exactly one time. The remainder of my woodworking experience has involved making small knick-knacks such as cutting boards, boxes, etc. Considering your experience with built-in shelving and closets, I was hoping you could lend me your expertise in regards to the following questions:  1. What's the easiest way to go about coming up with accurate calculations for the amount of materials I'll need? I might need a very dumbed down explanation.  2. How do you price projects like this? Do you estimate the time it will take and give the customer a set price, or do you use a time + materials structure? I want to help my sister do this for significantly less than she would pay someone else, but I also don't want to be committing an undetermined amount of my time for free. Thanks in advance for all your help. Zach Owens I have a question about Sawstops and the brake cartridge. I recently tripped my brake last night after changing from a Forest Woodworker blade to a Diable blade. Not sure why it happened. They are both 10" blades. Any suggestions for how to prevent this from happening in the future? Mark Guys Questions: I've had this question in my mind for a few months now. How do I know when I'm qualified and ready to teach others how to woodwork? For context, I am a teacher by trade, and have only been woodworking for about 2 and a half years. I am single and have no family, so I do have a lot of time to myself. I primarily use hand tools though I occasionally break out my track saw for sheet goods. I don't have any experience with power tools like a table saw, bandsaw, jointer, planer. My dovetails range from "functional-but-ugly" to "decent", I can chop out mortises with chisels, I can joint my edges with my hand plane, and I can get my surfaces to be "flat enough". With all that said, is there a point where you know you can effectively teach others how to woodwork? Down the line, I wouldn't mind being able to teach some hand tool woodworking classes. I do want to hold myself to a high standard and to be able to teach everyone proper technique without seriously hurting themselves. Thanks in advance for your input, Jose 1. Over the past a couple years I have gotten spoiled by building with a bunch of rift sawn white oak veneer, large slabs of walnut where I can cut parts out as I see fit.  Now I can't go back to flat sawn boards!! All I see is the glue line, cathedrals that don't match, or kinda do and just a jumble of boards that just kinda go together. Am I doomed to only hunt for the straightest best grain board? How do you guys incorporate flat sawn (cathedrals) and other wildly grain boards into your work? Or are you only trying to select straight grain for table tops, and use flat sawn stuff for lesser seen parts? Jesse Huys Questions: My question is about moving my shop.  My wife and I are moving from California to Washington - about 800 miles north of us.  I'm going to upgrade from a 1 car garage shop to probably twice the space.   We're going to hire professional movers but I'm wondering how to prepare and ship certain machines.   The ones I think most about are the Sawstop, the Festool Kapex 120, the DeWalt 735 planer, and my Laguna 14" bandsaw also with wheels.   The Sawstop has an extension table.  Would you remove that or let the professional movers move the fully assembled saw?  I would remove the blade and cartridge.  How about the Kapex, planer, and Laguna bandsaw?  Any special precautions or recommendations there?    For my planes and handsaws am thinking lots of bubble wrap and packed into boxes.  Would appreciate your thoughts.  Thanks for the great show guys! Ron Novato, CA   Hi guys, I am relatively new to the podcast so maybe it has been talked about before, but I had a question about Maloof inspired rocking chairs. Have any of you attempted making a chair with a Maloof inspired design? If so, did you use/purchase a pattern and do you have any recommendations? I have found several patterns out there, but some of them are a bit pricey and I don't want to commit to a specific pattern without doing my research. I consider myself an intermediate woodworker and this would by far be the most difficult project I have attempted so any advise is appreciated. Zach

I live in Canada so the weather is inconsistent. Very cold in the winter and very hot and humid in the summer. I am thinking of setting up a small workbench in my basement to cut joinery and do glue ups/assembly. I would keep all of my big power tools( table saw, planer etc.) in the garage. This setup would allow me to work comfortably through the year. My question is with wood movement. If I stored wood in my air conditioned basement and just took it out to the garage for a few hours at a time to plane and cut to size and then brought it back inside to cut joinery with hand tools, would the few hours spent in the humid or cold garage be enough time to warp the boards after I brought them back in? Heating the garage isn't  a realistic option right now as I have two young children and would probably only be able to get a few hours in the shop a week. (Not worth the cost) Thanks for all of the help. This podcast has been a huge influence in helping me to get started with woodworking. Derek I have a small benchtop jointer that a friend gave me for free and a Dewalt 735 planer. For anything but pretty small parts, I use a sled to joint lumber in my planer. I'd like to upgrade both of these eventually. I have a big shop with plenty of power, so neither of those are an issue. My budget is generally the limiting factor. I do plan to keep using standalone machines for the convenience of maintaining settings and flexibility of workflow.  I'd like to get a big jointer first and keep using the 735 while I save up for a big, heavy 220v planer. My question is about 12 inch combo machines. I keep seeing decent 12" combo machines come up used for way less than I can find a standalone 12" jointer. I've seen a few of the Jet machines for $2k-$2500 and a friend recently got a Hammer A3 31 for $3500. Even new, combo machines seem to run way cheaper than a 12" jointer. Why? I understand the beds are shorter, but other than that, what is the disadvantage. Is it ridiculous to buy one if I have no long term need of the planer function and don't plan to use it? Parker Huys Quesions: Hey guys, Thank you for your many thoughtful responses to the questions you receive from your listeners. I  tend to get bored after I've made the same type of project several times (ie pencil boxes, pens, etc..). If I am not in a time crunch,  I like figuring out how to do something to make a project a little more challenging and interesting. I like looking at projects to give me some inspiration on how I might make a new project.  Early on in my woodworking journey I gained a lot of positive inspiration from watchin 'New Yankee Workshop'. The way Norm broke down processes in his projects was very helpful to me. However, there are some projects I've seen which are incredibly intimidating.(ie  highboys, Maloof rockers, etc...).  While I admire these types of projects,  I don't think I would tackle them without taking a specific class.  Where do you guys find inspiration for you projects? Are there any type of projects that intimidate you? Thank you for your responses. Have a great day. Chuck I am designing a dresser which will be 48” high and 72” wide and a chest of drawers which will be 60” high and 40” wide. I would like to join the carcass sides and top with dovetails. With the sides being 48” and 60” and the width being 72” and 60”, how should I clamp the sides and top/bottom to my bench and stand in order to cut the dovetails by hand? I'm only 5'8” and have never cut dovetails up by my head. With a dresser and chest of drawers being the above sizes, would you recommend another method for my joinery? Love the podcast, keep up the great work!! Mike

Old Growth Forests, natural forests that have grown undisturbed over a long period of time, offer a wide variety of benefits including storing more carbon and nitrogen than typical forests, providing a unique structure that supports rich ecosystems, and offering an example of what nature looks like when it flourishes on its own. Unfortunately, due in large part to human intervention, these old forests are hard to come by - but our guest today wants to change that. Joan Maloof is Professor Emeritus of Biology at Salisbury University and the Founder of the Old Growth Forest Network, the only national network of protected, old-growth, native forests in the United States. The organization's goal is to locate and designate at least one protected old forest in every U.S. county that has the right climate to sustain a forested area. In this conversation, Monica and Jennifer chat with Joan about her journey to founding the Old Growth Forest network, the intricate and rich ecosystems that these old forests support, and beauty as a catalyst for positive change.Show NotesThe Old Growth Forest NetworkAbout Joan MaloofFind a ForestNominate a ForestVolunteer with the Old Growth Forest NetworkNature's Temples: The Complex World of Old Growth Forests by Joan MaloofAmong the Ancients: Adventures in Eastern Old Growth Forests by Joan MaloofTeaching the Trees: Lessons from the Forest by Joan Maloof

Angela is joined by Dr Molly Maloof to discuss burnout and its impact on energy metabolism. This bitesize edition looks into the ways in which we can recognise the signs of burnout, the importance of understanding cortisol levels through testing, and the role of blood sugar regulation in managing burnout. Angela and Dr Molly stress the need for individuals, especially women, to prioritise rest and lifestyle changes when experiencing burnout, rather than relying solely on diet modifications KEY TAKEAWAYS Look out for fluctuating blood sugar levels, low energy, and issues with hormone regulation as potential signs of burnout. Before addressing stress, get hormones tested, assess blood sugar regulation, and evaluate overall physiological function to understand what's happening inside the body. Rest is fundamental to healing from burnout. Slowing down, getting adequate sleep, and prioritizing rest are crucial steps in the recovery process. Eliminate processed and fast foods from the diet to reduce brain fog, inflammation, metabolic inflexibility, and gut dysfunction, which can exacerbate burnout symptoms. BEST MOMENTS "You know, it's funny, when I was writing this book, I had a little bit of a freak out because my editors were like, women who are burned out are going to buy this book." "What they're doing is they're forcing their body to pump out more cortisol the best it can but eventually it's going to just flatline." "It's really high when you're in an insulin resistant state. But when you're fully burned out and you're like I can't get out of bed in the morning because I'm so exhausted."
