In today's episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, I'm unpacking one of the biggest realizations I've had after this recent hail season: Is high volume really the best business model anymore? After running full throttle for the last month and a half, dealing with packed shops, overwhelmed logistics, insurance bottlenecks, storage issues, delayed approvals, supplements, and technician management — I'm stepping back and evaluating what actually makes sense moving forward. In this episode, I break down: The reality of running a hail shop during a major storm Why State Farm, USAA, and Allstate are disrupting the process Long approval times and supplement delays The hidden cost of storage and tied-up shop space Why body shops become bottlenecks during hail season High volume vs high profit shop models Whether it makes more sense to chase every car… or maximize every claim Why technician pay and retention matter more than ever How insurance company relationships are changing the game Thinking long-term: shop growth, acquisitions, and retirement strategy The truth is, hail repair logistics are changing fast. Insurance companies are tightening the process, approvals are slower, and independent shops are being forced to rethink how they operate. At some point, every shop owner has to ask themselves: Do I want to do more cars… or make more money per car? This episode is an honest look at what happens after the storm settles down and you finally have enough breathing room to evaluate what worked, what didn't, and where the future of your business is headed. Topics Discussed: Paintless Dent Repair (PDR), hail repair business, hail shop logistics, State Farm claims, USAA hail claims, Allstate hail claims, insurance supplements, PDR shop growth, technician retention, hail estimating, CCC1, storage fees, hail damage operations, PDR business strategy, high volume vs high profit, EOS meetings, scaling a dent business, technician pay, shop systems.
In today's episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, I'm diving into one of the biggest decisions any PDR shop owner or hail tech will face: Do you train your own technicians… or hire experienced ones? There are pros and cons to both, and after years of training dent techs, running hail operations, and building teams, I want to break down the realities that nobody talks about. We get into: The pros and cons of training your own PDR technicians Why experienced techs cost more — and why they're often worth it The hidden cost of speed, production, and cleanup work Why new techs need years to develop efficiency How to spot people worth investing in Why hiring people with other valuable skill sets matters Training during hail season vs downtime The reality of loyalty in business Why every business owner needs to hope for the best but prepare for the worst I also talk about recent experiences training technicians during hail season, how we structure growth inside the shop, and why investing in the right people can completely change the trajectory of your business. The truth is — building a strong hail team isn't just about finding talent. It's about developing systems, creating opportunities, and understanding where experience actually matters. Whether you're trying to scale your shop, hire your first technician, or debating if training someone is even worth it, this episode is for you. Topics Discussed: Paintless Dent Repair (PDR), hail damage repair, PDR technician training, hiring dent techs, wholesale PDR, hail teams, scaling a dent business, PDR shop management, dent repair staffing, technician development, PDR mentoring, hail season operations, building a PDR business, dent technician pay structures, training vs hiring.
APTA Michigan's Waves host Andy Wicks interviews Dr. Rachel Auer, a traveling physical therapist from Michigan and a Grand Valley State DPT graduate, about her nearly three years of travel PT across Michigan, Montana, Washington, Colorado, and currently Anchorage, Alaska. Auer explains she chose travel PT to explore the country and sample multiple practice settings, moving between acute care, inpatient/SNF, and outpatient to keep skills sharp. She addresses common misconceptions that travel jobs have poor training or are undesirable, noting her orientation experiences have generally been reasonable. She advises students to start by learning from travel therapy communities, talk with many travelers, and understand tax compliance around tax-free stipends, including consulting a travel-focused tax expert. She also discusses state licensure challenges without the PT Compact and shares outdoor adventures enabled by short-term contracts, while acknowledging frequent moves and housing shifts can be tiring and she may eventually return to Michigan.Use the LARA PT or PTA General Response Form to document listening to Waves episodes for your PDR license renewal credits!www.aptami.orgYouTube
In today's episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, I'm talking about something that can absolutely make or break your hail business: Getting paid. If you're in hail repair, retail PDR, or running a shop, this is one of those lessons you either learn the easy way… or the hard way. I'm breaking down what we call "securing the back" — making sure insurance money is actually secured before the vehicle leaves your shop. We get into: Why you should never release a hail car before payment is secured What a Proof of Payment is and why you need it The insurance companies that create the biggest headaches Why State Farm and USAA can slow things down Direction to pay, power of attorney, repair authorization & transport forms Why scaling a hail operation requires admin systems Personal checks vs cashier's checks (and where we draw the line) Why policies matter more than emotions in business How growth forces better systems in PDR shops The truth is, when hail volume scales up, the old "trust the customer" mentality stops working. Systems matter. Documentation matters. And if you're running a real operation, you better make sure the money is secured before the car rolls out. Whether you're a solo tech looking to get into hail, or already running volume, this episode will save you headaches, stress, and potentially thousands of dollars. Topics Discussed: Paintless Dent Repair (PDR), hail repair business, insurance supplements, proof of payment, State Farm hail claims, USAA hail claims, dent shop systems, PDR business growth, retail hail repair, direction to pay, CCC1 estimating, hail season operations, dent tech business tips, shop processes, scaling a PDR business.

In today's episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, I'm talking directly to the dent techs and shop owners who are trying to scale during hail season without letting the wheels fall off. I'm sharing a real situation that happened in our shop involving a customer concern on a vehicle after delivery—and how we handled it by owning the truth, tightening systems, and improving our processes instead of pointing fingers. We get into: Why scaling a hail shop exposes weaknesses fast The importance of pre-existing damage inspections Why photo documentation matters more than ever Check-in and checkout systems for hail cars Scan tools, battery checks, unplugged connectors, and avoiding comeback headaches How growth breaks systems—and why that's actually a good thing The mindset shift required to go from a small operation to a high-volume hail shop Customer communication hacks that reduce headaches and increase trust The truth is, when hail volume explodes, your systems either evolve or they break. The real question is: What are you learning from the breakdowns? If you're in PDR, running retail, managing hail volume, or trying to build a shop that can truly scale, this episode is packed with real-world lessons from inside the storm. Topics Discussed: Paintless Dent Repair (PDR), hail repair systems, shop operations, scaling a dent business, hail season workflow, customer communication, dent shop processes, PDR entrepreneurship, hail estimating, CCC1, vehicle documentation, operational growth, dent tech leadership, retail PDR systems.
Here you go — podcast style for dent techs only (no local SEO, no YouTube vibe). I leaned into the deeper/biblical angle while keeping it relevant to entrepreneurs, techs, and the PDR mindset. Podcast Title Options: The Parable of the Soils | Why Some Dent Techs Grow & Others Stay Stuck Truth, Identity & Growth in PDR | The Parable of the Soils Why Some Techs Never Level Up (Biblical Perspective) The Soil of Your Mind | PDR, Growth & The Truth About Success The Real Reason Some Dent Techs Stay Stuck Identity, Truth & Becoming Elite in PDR The Hidden Battle Holding You Back in PDR The Mindset That Changes Everything | Tactical Dent Tech Podcast Podcast Description In today's episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, John dives into something deeper than dent repair, business, or even mindset—the Parable of the Soils and how it directly applies to growth in PDR, entrepreneurship, and life. Why do some technicians level up while others stay stuck for years? Why do some people embrace truth, struggle through growth, and eventually thrive… while others quit, get distracted, or stay trapped in limiting beliefs? John breaks down the biblical principle behind the condition of your "soil" and how your mindset, identity, and willingness to accept truth may be the very thing determining your success in Paintless Dent Repair. This episode covers: • The difference between truth and comforting illusions • Why some dent techs hit an "aha" moment—and others never do • The Parable of the Soils and how it applies to PDR mastery • Identity, limiting beliefs, and personal growth • The real power behind discipline, wisdom, and perseverance • Why your environment and mindset matter more than talent Whether you're new to PDR or a seasoned technician trying to reach the next level, this episode will challenge the way you think about growth, skill, and who you believe you are.

In this episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, John Hiley dives deep into one of the biggest challenges of running a high-volume hail operation that nobody really talks about—logistics. From packed lots, overflow storage, insurance delays, and musical chairs with cars, to planning the future of a scalable PDR operation, this is a real behind-the-scenes look at what happens when hail season actually hits hard. John breaks down: Managing a shop overflowing with hail cars The reality of insurance approval delays (especially State Farm desktop approvals) Why logistics can make or break a hail operation Storage strategies during heavy storm seasons Lessons learned from scaling too fast (or not scaling enough) Why building ownership and real estate may be the next move for serious hail operators Tax strategy, business growth, and thinking long-term in PDR If you're a dent tech, shop owner, or someone trying to scale in the hail game, this episode gives you a real-world look into what happens after the storm hits and the operational challenges that come with growth. Key Takeaways: ✅ Hail season success is all about logistics ✅ Insurance timelines can bottleneck production ✅ Too many techs = standing around. Too few = chaos ✅ Parking and storage become major profit killers ✅ Growth requires systems—not just more work ✅ Real estate can become part of a long-term PDR strategy Sometimes the biggest challenge isn't fixing dents… it's managing the operation around them. Tactical Dent Tech Podcast — Real-world PDR, hail damage, business growth, and what it actually takes to build something bigger.

In this episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, John Highley breaks down what he learned after a full week of one-on-one beginner PDR training. This episode is about more than teaching someone how to find the tip of a tool. It's about why the fundamentals — side panel work, eye training, hand-eye coordination, cross-checking, sharp tip finishing, and clean dent completion — are what eventually unlock advanced repairs. John talks about: Why students need to get off the hood and onto side panels early How eye fatigue affects new PDR students Why the brain has to "flip" before the fog makes sense The difference between pushing with muscle and using body weight Why finishing small dents teaches the skills needed for big dents How struggle creates wisdom in PDR Why you can't pay a trainer to "do your push-ups" The importance of mastering fundamentals before advanced metal movement Whether you're learning PDR, training someone else, or trying to bring a family member into the trade, this episode is a reminder that greatness starts with the basics. The big dents are won by the same skills used to finish the small ones.
In this episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, John breaks down a real-world situation from inside the Tactical Dent Tech Facebook group—where an established PDR company with strong Google reviews is still losing jobs to insurance steering during hail claims. Why is this happening? Because in today's market, Google reviews alone are no longer enough. John dives deep into: How insurance companies use fear to steer customers away Why losing control of the conversation costs you deals The difference between being a "local option" vs. being the authority And most importantly… how content creation changes everything This episode is a must-listen if you want to: Close more hail jobs Build real trust before customers even meet you Stand out in saturated markets like DFW Future-proof your business against brokers and low-trust competitors The truth is simple:

In this episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, John Highley breaks down a real-world estimate on an Audi quarter panel—and how changing the approach turned a potential lost job into a fast, profitable win. This isn't just about dent repair… it's about understanding your customer, setting expectations, and closing more deals without sacrificing your time or sanity. John walks through how a $3,000+ full R&I repair turned into a $1,200 glue-pull solution that the customer happily accepted—and why this approach often leads to more profit, less risk, and better client satisfaction. In this episode, you'll learn: • Why starting with the highest possible estimate gives you leverage • How to use pricing as a sales and expectation-setting tool • The difference between perfect repairs vs. "make-it-better" clients • How to avoid losing jobs by being too rigid in your process • Why most customers don't actually want "perfect"—they want value • How to reduce risk (and headaches) by avoiding unnecessary R&I work • The psychology behind giving customers options instead of ultimatums This episode also dives into: • Real talk about R&I (and why many techs hate it) • Using glue pulling strategically to save time and increase profit • How to avoid nightmare clients by properly setting expectations • Why exceeding expectations is easier when you control the narrative upfront At the end of the day, this business isn't about proving how perfect you are— it's about serving the customer, solving their problem, and doing it profitably. If you can master that balance, you'll close more deals and make more money.

Oliviero racconta come è riuscito a "infiltrarsi" all'evento e cosa ha visto e sentito. I break down what's coming next for Tactical Dent Tech, including: The return of the OG Tactical Hammers (and new 2.0 versions) The upcoming Tactical Estimator 2.0 and why it increases your revenue The real work behind launching a book and building funnels that convert How viral content (7M+ views) turns into real customers Why mixing small dents, big dents, and content strategy is key to growth Scaling your business without getting stuck doing everything yourself I also talk about shifting focus this year—less chaos, more structure, more creation… and stepping into a bigger role as the face of the brand while continuing to do what I love: fixing dents and building systems that win. If you're serious about growing your PDR business, increasing leads, and building something long-term… this episode is for you.
In this episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, John Highley talks about the mindset that separates successful technicians from everyone else going into hail season — the mentality of the farmer. As early storms begin popping up across the country in places like Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas, and Oklahoma City, many technicians are gearing up for what could become a busy hail year. But before the storms ever arrive, there is a season of preparation that most people overlook. John explains how the farmer mentality applies directly to business, marketing, and building long-term success in the PDR industry. Farmers plant seeds long before harvest season arrives. Entrepreneurs must do the same. In this episode you'll hear about: • Why the slow season is actually when businesses are built • The difference between a technician mindset and an entrepreneur mindset • Why planting seeds consistently leads to long-term success • The power of discipline when you don't feel motivated • Why social media consistency matters (even when videos don't perform at first) • How the early storms across the country impact the hail market • Why troubleshooting skills are one of the most valuable skills you can develop John also shares personal stories from building his shop in Texas, launching his social media push, and the mentality required to grow a business when results aren't immediate. Success in this industry doesn't happen overnight — it happens when you plant seeds daily and stay committed long enough for the harvest to arrive. If you're a dent technician, hail tech, or entrepreneur preparing for the upcoming season, this episode will help reset your mindset and keep you focused on the long game. In this episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, John Highley dives deep into what it really takes to stand out in a highly saturated Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) market like Dallas–Fort Worth. John shares the story of repairing a massive quarter panel dent on a BMW M4 Competition that multiple dent shops had already turned down. The repair required advanced glue pulling techniques, edge pliers, precision knockdown work, and wet sanding and polishing to restore the panel without repainting. But this episode isn't just about dent repair. It's about the bigger picture of building trust, authority, and visibility in your market so customers find YOU when everyone else says a dent can't be fixed. John explains: • Why many dent companies are actually sales organizations, not technicians • How customers struggle to find a true high-level PDR technician • Why large complex dent repair is a huge opportunity in saturated markets • The power of posting repair videos every single day • How social media builds trust, authority, and credibility with customers • Why marketing separates technicians who stay busy from those who struggle • The difference between technicians who wait for work and those who create demand John also discusses why many PDR businesses fail to grow—not because they lack skill, but because they refuse to document and showcase their work. As he says in this episode: "Everybody wants the juice… but nobody wants the squeeze." If you're a dent technician, PDR business owner, or someone trying to grow a dent repair company, this episode lays out the exact mindset and strategy needed to separate yourself from the competition and dominate your market. About Tactical Dent John Highley is the owner of Tactical Dent TX, a paintless dent repair company based in Frisco, Texas, serving customers across the Dallas–Fort Worth area. The Tactical Dent brand also includes: • Tactical Dent Tools • Tactical Dent Tech Podcast • Tactical Dent Marketing • Tactical Dent Tech social channels Through these platforms, John shares real-world dent repair training, marketing strategies, and industry insights for technicians around the world. On APTA Michigan's Waves podcast, host Andy Wicks interviews Dr. Bill McGehee, current Speaker of APTA's House of Delegates (term ending Dec. 31, 2026), about his background as a physical therapist and Tufts University DPT clinical professor, and his path from chapter service in Illinois to APTA House of Delegates Speaker of the House (elected 2020). McGehee explains the House as the membership's representative body of 450+ delegates from 51 chapters and 18 sections that sets association policy and positions, adopts bylaws and the profession's vision, and elects APTA leaders, while the Board of Directors holds fiduciary responsibility for the $50M organization and must balance House priorities with strategy, risk, and timing. He discusses the speaker's leadership/servant role, the value of mission and vision as a “North Star,” and how Roberts Rules protect minority voices and keep proceedings productive. McGehee's “soapbox” is that society knows what PTs do; key barriers are access and other constraints, and PTs should lead and practice at the topof their scope. In this episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, John Highley shares hard-earned lessons about business partnerships — the good, the bad, and the mistakes that can cost you years of work. After spending the last several years building companies, partnerships, and equity deals through Marketing Savage and within the PDR industry, John breaks down the realities most entrepreneurs overlook when going into business with someone else. From handshake deals that turn into million-dollar problems… to partnership agreements that never evolve as a company grows… John explains why defining roles, expectations, and responsibilities from the beginning is critical. He also dives into something many people don't think about until it's too late: when you partner with someone in business, you're often partnering with their spouse and personal life as well. This episode covers: • Why partnership agreements must be defined from day one • The importance of evolving your operating agreements as the company grows • The difference between Visionaries and Integrators (and why both are necessary) • Why some partnerships explode while others build incredible companies • Hidden risks that can impact your reputation, finances, and future Business partnerships can accelerate growth, but they also carry serious risks if the wrong foundation is laid. If you're a technician, entrepreneur, or business owner considering a partnership — this episode could save you years of headaches and costly mistakes. Sometimes the best business lessons are learned the hard way. Today, John shares the ones he hopes you won't have to learn yourself.

In this episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, John Highley shares a major update on the upcoming release of his new book, PDR Empire — the first marketing book written specifically for the paintless dent removal industry. After years of teasing the project, the book is officially finished, designed, and ready to launch. The only thing left is time — and that window is coming fast. John breaks down: Why PDR Empire focuses on timeless marketing principles instead of trendy tactics How the book avoids outdated platform tutorials that change every year Why this framework worked 10 years ago and will still work 10 years from now How real-world marketing stories from his own business are woven into every chapter He also explains what makes this book different: A QR-code–connected video course built into the book Practical walkthroughs for Facebook, Instagram, Google, and AI tools A learning platform designed to evolve without rewriting the book A concise, high-impact format — roughly 100 pages, no fluff Whether you're marketing for hail damage, door dings, or full-scale shop growth, this book was built to apply across every PDR business model. John also shares: Launch timing expectations Possible giveaways and review incentives Why this project isn't about selling — it's about building something that creates real fruit in the industry If you've been waiting for a clear, foundational marketing guide built specifically for PDR techs, this episode gives you a behind-the-scenes look at what's coming and why it matters. PDR Empire is almost here.

Most people don't fail on social media because they're bad at it — they fail because they quit right before it starts working. In this episode, John Highley breaks down the real power of consistency and why daily posting is the fastest way to build leverage, authority, and inbound work — especially in competitive markets like PDR. John shares real examples from: Building Kingdom Power Life from almost zero followers to massive reach Growing a local Tactical Dent brand in one of the most saturated PDR markets in the U.S. What actually happens behind the scenes of social media algorithms when you show up every day Why platforms intentionally delay results to test commitment How consistency creates feedback loops that refine your content naturally Why branding, logos, and phone numbers can actually hurt your reach The mindset shift required to keep posting when it feels like "nothing is happening" If you've ever felt stuck, discouraged, or unsure what to post — this episode will reset your perspective and give you the confidence to commit, execute, and let time do the heavy lifting. Consistency isn't sexy. But it's undefeated.
Google reviews still matter — and if you're running a PDR shop, they can be the difference between staying busy and getting buried. In this episode, John Highley breaks down real-world, proven strategies for getting more Google reviews without sounding desperate or awkward. These are methods John personally uses — and ones he's seen work repeatedly for high-performing PDR shops. We cover: How going above and beyond on small repairs turns into 5-star reviews Why simple favors (buffing scratches, fixing clips, small extras) convert better than asking The right way to send review links so customers actually complete them Follow-up systems that don't feel spammy Why personalized video follow-ups and handwritten notes still crush How local coffee shop gift cards can multiply goodwill and referrals Why Google reviews now matter beyond Google — including AI tools like ChatGPT If you want more reviews, more trust, and more inbound work without chasing customers, this episode is straight gold — especially for PDR techs building long-term leverage in their market.
In this episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, I share a personal reflection on what it means to lose something you once loved — and what happens when you find your way back to it. I talk about growing up in an automotive family, falling into paintless dent repair, struggling through the early years, and eventually mastering the craft. I also open up about stepping away from the trade, building a successful marketing business, and realizing that something was missing — even when life looked "perfect" from the outside. This episode covers: Growing up around cars and the garage culture Discovering PDR and pushing through the hard early years Wanting mastery more than anything else Losing passion and chasing what looked better on the other side Building success outside the trade — and still feeling the void Coming back to PDR with renewed purpose Why serving people and working with your hands matters The difference between happiness and joy Remembering your first love and firing it back up This is a message for technicians who feel burned out, disconnected, or questioning whether what they do still matters. Sometimes you don't realize how valuable something is until you step away from it. If you're in the PDR industry and need a reminder of why this trade is meaningful — not just profitable — this episode is for you. Welcome to the Tactical Tech Movement.

Cold glue can be a powerful tool — but only if you actually understand what's happening during the pull. In this episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, I break down the real reasons cold glue pulls fail, what most techs misunderstand, and how small adjustments can completely change your results. This isn't theory. This is real-world PDR experience from the hail lanes, retail work, and years of trial and error. In this episode, we cover: Why cold glue isn't magic (and why it fails for so many techs) Common mistakes that kill your pulls before they even start When cold glue makes sense — and when it absolutely doesn't How to think about tension, timing, and panel response The mindset shift that separates average techs from elite ones If you're frustrated with cold glue, this episode will save you time, money, and a lot of unnecessary experimenting.
In this episode of the Tactical Dent Tech Podcast, John gets real about something many people in the PDR industry see—but few are willing to talk about. Suspicious repairs. Damaged cars being covered up. Money made in the dark. And the chaos that always seems to follow. Drawing from real-life industry experiences, biblical principles, and hard-earned personal lessons, John breaks down the difference between operating in the physical world versus walking in the spiritual world—something Jesus spoke about often, but many business owners ignore. This isn't a "religious talk." This is a business reality check. You'll hear: Why manipulating systems, hiding damage, or avoiding accountability always carries a cost How money gained the wrong way never truly belongs to you Why chaos, stress, broken relationships, and lack of peace often show up before consequences do How integrity, accountability, and doing things right bring order—not just spiritually, but operationally Why your employees are always watching, even when you think they aren't John also shares personal stories from his own journey—tests he's faced, lessons learned the hard way, and why choosing accountability changed not just his business, but who he became as a leader. If you've ever looked around the industry and wondered how certain people "get ahead"… Or felt the pressure to compromise just to keep up… This episode will challenge how you think about success, money, and leadership.

Networking is essential for success in the auto detailing industry! In this video, David Elliott (CEO of Pearl Nano and host of Calling All Detailers Podcast) explains why every detailer should be actively networking with other trades (like PDR, tint, PPF, and upholstery) and even other detailers in their area. Here's why networking is a game-changer: Referral Opportunities: Spot services your client needs (like dent removal or PPF) that you don't offer, and refer them to a trusted network partner. Handle Overload: When you're slammed with work, refer clients to a trusted detailer down the street—don't let them wait three weeks! Build Community: Hosting events like a Christmas party helps strengthen relationships and ensures referrals flow both ways. Networking isn't about protecting "secrets" (there are none!), it's about mutual success and providing the best service for your customers. Content is KING and right now it has never been easier, it is the time to future proof your PDR business if you rely on retail business!
