In de afgelopen maanden zijn er grote demonstraties geweest tegen de onderwijsbezuinigingen op universiteiten. Er zou 1,2 miljard op onderwijs moeten worden bezuinigd, waarbij de grootste klappen vallen bij de geesteswetenschappen, omdat die het minst goed passen in universiteiten als bedrijven. De aanval op universiteiten wordt gezien als een aanval door uiterst rechts op de zogenaamde “linkse hobbies”, waarbij vooral de geesteswetenschappen ten prooi vallen aan anti-intellectualisme. Dit is geen toeval, zegt onder andere Tommy van Avermaete: “De wereld die Wilders voor ogen staat is er één waarin kritisch vermogen, actief burgerschap, pluriformiteit van ideeën, emancipatie van gemarginaliseerde groepen en openheid van informatie onwenselijke belemmeringen zijn, in plaats van nastrevenswaardige elementen die funderend zijn voor een democratische samenleving.” Juist de nadruk op pluriformiteit van perspectieven en kritisch denken maakt geesteswetenschappen fundamenteel voor een democratisch debat. Asghar Seyed-Gohrab schrijft in zijn column “Als we geen kritische denkers opleiden, gaan we de despoten achterna” dat geesteswetenschappen essentieel zijn voor het bevragen van veranderingen, waardoor dictatoriale machthebbers geesteswetenschappen proberen te verzwakken. Kritisch denken is echter lastig te kwalificeren en te meten, waardoor geestewetenschappen ook moeilijk passen in een neo-kapitalistisch systeem. Studies en studenten zijn het meest waardevol als ze passen in een verdienmodel, waarbij het nut van studeren vooral het bevorderen van economische productiviteit wordt. Het bevragen van het economische systeem en het zoeken naar alternatieven zijn beiden niet winstgevend, en er wordt dus ook geen geld voor vrijgemaakt. Zoals Martha Nussbaum schrijft in Niet voor de winst, worden de geesteswetenschappen al jaren wegbezuinigd, omdat ze niet worden gezien als productief, terwijl ze van fundamenteel belang zijn voor de democractie. Democratisch onderwijs maakt mensen tot kritische burgers die complexe problemen leren begrijpen vanuit verschillende standpunten. Kunst en het bestuderen van kunst zijn daarbij van belang om empathie te ontwikkelen voor andere ervaringen. Vandaag onderzoeken we de aanval op de geesteswetenschappen. Last Monday, the 47th presidential term began in the United States. A day after the inauguration, on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, the spiritual leader of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, delivered a powerful sermon at a national prayer service held at Washington National Cathedral. Her sermon highlighted the ethical challenges facing the nation and called for a deeper commitment to mercy, justice and compassion. Addressing pressing issues such as the treatment of immigrants and the rights of LG.B.T.Q. individuals, she made a direct appeal to President Donald Trump, who was present in the congregation.  The reaction—for good and ill—to Bishop Budde's sermon got us thinking here on the Preach team. Since launching the podcast, we've asked many of our guests how as Catholic leaders they can best balance preaching with politics. Aus irgendeiner Idee heraus habe ich mir das Video vom Krippenspiel im DOMRADIO im Dezember 2020 noch einmal angeschaut. In dieser Coronaweihnacht hatten wir mit Kindern vom Josefshaus aus Olpe und Dumicke und Schwestern und Nachbarn und Mitarbeitenden das Stück eingeübt und dann für den Nachmittag am Heiligen Abend aufgeführt und aufgezeichnet. Und als ich es mir nochmal angeschaut habe, sind mir an manchen Stellen die Tränen gekommen, so berührt war ich.Da war der Josef, der immer den Text vergessen hat, immer in die falsche Richtung geschaut und immer ganz schnell alles runtergerattert hat. Da war ein zartes Mädchen, das als Engel auf einen Hocker klettern musste, weil das Ambo zu hoch war und die dann, mit einem Bein wippend, die beste Botschaft der Welt ganz aufgeregt runtergelesen hat. Da war Maria, die sehr robust und wenig sanft und gütig sein wollte und die sich geweigert hat einen Rock oder sowas anzuziehen und die die Geschenke der Hirten kurz angeschaut und dann einfach auf den Altar gelegt hat, weil sonst kein Platz für die Gaben war. Da waren die Könige, die nicht mehr so genau wussten, was sie sagen wollten und die kleine Flötenspielerin, die, wenn sie sich verspielt hatte, unbeirrt weitergespielt hat.Am Ende aller Aufzeichnungen und nachdem alles "im Kasten" des Kameramannes war, merkte man die Erleichterung der Kinder, dass alles geschafft war und die Freude über den leckeren Kuchen, den die Erzieherinnen extra dafür gebacken hatten. Es war nichts perfekt an diesem Spiel, aber es hatte etwas von der wunderbaren Antiphon des heutigen Invitatoriums: "Heute sollt ihr wissen, dass der Herr kommt und morgen werdet ihr schauen seine Herrlichkeit!" Die Kinder und Jugendlichen wollten mit ihrem zauberhaften, nicht perfekten Spiel zeigen, dass die beste Botschaft der Welt auch in der heute nicht perfekten Welt verkündet werden muss, weil Gott wirklich Mensch geworden ist für uns.

At his Sunday Angelus this week, Pope Francis announced that he would be creating a new batch of Cardinals on December 8th. I haven't worked out exactly how I'll be covering them schedule-wise, what with the added wild card of my new job (yay), but I do plan to introduce them all to you sooner rather than later and the fact that we just had a First Judgment capping off the most recent batch of existing Cardinals actually makes things pretty convenient, timing-wise.   Let's take a moment to briefly outline the new Cardinals, and then I'll leave you all in suspense for Sunday, or Saturday, or whenever it is I do Cardinal Numbers releases at this point. Probably Sundays now with my new work schedule.   Describing the new Cardinals as a whole, Pope Francis noted that “their origin reflects the universality of the Church, that continues to announce God's merciful love to all people.”   First up, we have future Cardinal Angelo ACERBI, a 99 year old Italian and former Apostolic Nuncio. He's almost certainly the oldest Cardinal at elevation in church history, beating Pope Francis' strong initial bid of the 98 year old Cardinal Capovilla back in 2014. Veteran Vaticanologist John Allen, Jr. already beat me to telling the joke that came to my mind in guessing that Pope Francis would round up a 100 year old guy in a future consistory just to really make a point. Next we have future Cardinal 74 year old Peruvian Archbishop Carlos Gustavo CASTILLO MATTASOGLIO, and by the way, if my pronunciation is off on this, well I'm doing my best to follow Pope Francis, because I figure he's probably got it relatively close. No pressure on him of course, it's not like this is probably the most important announcement of these cardinal's lives and they would prefer to hear their names said correctly.   After that, we have 72 year old Argentinian Archbishop Vicente BOKALIC IGLIC who, as a Vincentian, is the first but not last on the list from a religious order. After that, we have 68 year old Ecuadorian Archbishop Luis Gerardo CABRERA HERRERA, which is a fun name to say. He'll actually be 69 when the consistory rolls around, and he's a Franciscan.   After that we have future Cardinal Fernando Natalio CHOMALÍ GARIB a 67 year old Chilean Archbishop, and yeah, there's a fair amount of names on this list from South America. But then we start a brief Asian swing, with 65 year old Japanese Archbishop Tarcisio Isao KIKUCHI, a Verbite, who will actually be 66 when the consistory actually rolls around. Next, we finish that brief Asian tour with 65 year old Philippine bishop Pablo Virgilio SIONGCO DAVID, who apparently goes by the charming nickname “Ambo”. Then there's 68 year old Serbian Archbishop Ladislav NEMET another Verbite, that is the Society of the Divine Word by the way, I don't think we've come across them before, but we'll certainly be talking about them more after today. Then there's the 64 year old Brazilian Archbishop, Jaime SPENGLER the second Franciscan on the list. From Africa, we have a 63 year old Archbishop from the Ivory Coast by the name of Ignace BESSI DOGBO, at least that's how Pope Francis pronounced it, although to me it looks like  DOGBO Also representing the continent of Africa we have Jean-Paul VESCO, a 62 year old who was born in Lyon, France, who's serving as an archbishop in Algeria. He's a Dominican. After that we have a 62 year old Indonesian bishop by the name of Paskalis Bruno SYUKUR, the third Franciscan on our list, And we're not quite done with Franciscans, because the next name on the list of that of a Conventual Franciscan, a 61 year old Belgian prelate by the name of Dominique Joseph MATHIEU, who, believe it or not, is actually serving as an archbishop of the Islamic Republic of Iran. After that we've got a couple of Italians, first up the 57 year old Archbishop of Turn, Roberto REPOLE, Followed by the new Vicar General for the Diocese of Rome, 53 year old bishop Baldassare REINA, who will be 54 by the time of the consistory in December. Next on the list, closer to home for many of us though there are no Americans on the list, we have a 53 year old Archbishop of Toronto, Canada, future Cardinal Francis LEO. Next we have the Coadjutor Archpriest of the Papal Basilica Mary Major, Bishop Rolandas MAKRICKAS a 52 year old from Lithuania. And then, perhaps tying the gentleman representing Iran for the most surprising, we have 44 year old Mykola BYCHOK, a Ukrainian Greek Catholic Redemptorist who is heading the Eparchy of Saint Peter and Paul of Melbourne of the Ukrainians, so he's representing Australia, though obviously there's multinational ties there. His appointment basically indirectly confirms that Sviatoslav Shevchuk, who we've talked about before, will not be getting a red had under Pope Francis. Shevchuk, for his part, has been pretty diplomatic about it, expressing his cordial appreciation to Pope Francis. And I want to note again that Bychok is 44, he was born in the 80s. That's weird. I was born in the 80s. You've gotta go back over 50 years to find someone who was younger at their elevation to the cardinalate than he's gonna be. The remaining names on the list are all priests, not bishops, at least at this time. First, future Cardinal Timothy Peter Joseph RADCLIFFE, a 79 year old British Dominican who Pope Francis described simply as a “theologian” in his announcement, which will be interesting because based on his previous statements, he will probably be the most pro LGBT person in the College of Cardinals until Pope Francis gets around to nominating Fr James Martin. I kid, I kid. Seriously though, we will get into it, he's got some surprising views on that front. After that, there's a 59 year old Italian priest named Fabio BAGGIO who's currently the Under Secretary of the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development, who also happens to be a Scalibrinian, rounding up our representatives from the religious orders. The last name on the list is the 51 year old Indian priest who has been helping plan Pope Francis' trips, George Jacob KOOVAKAD, who belongs to the Syro-Malabar Rite. Altogether, 11 of the 21, that is, most of them, are from religious orders, with lots of Franciscans, and notable, Pope Francis is tripling the number of Verbite Cardinals in history. There was one other before, who was elevated shortly after World War II and died in the 60s. 17 out of the 21 future Cardinals are under the age of 70, and there's certainly a huge age range with a 55 year gap between Bychok and Acerbi. As usual, most of the names are from the Latin Rite, but keep in mind in addition to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Bychok, Koovakad hails from the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church which now has two Cardinals, notably not including their new Major Archbishop who came onto the scene last year. Das erklärt der Theologe Stephan Wahle in der neuen Folge des katholisch.de-Podcasts "Aufgekreuzt" im Gespräch mit Host Roland Müller.

In der Fastenzeit gibt es viele Angebote in den Pfarreien und Pastoralverbünden, um Themen und Fragen des Glaubens zu hören, zu besprechen, zu bedenken, ins Gebet zu nehmen. In einer Gemeinde geht es darum, Gott Raum zu geben und es werden die einzelnen Bereiche in der wundervoll restaurierten Kirche angeschaut und bedacht. Da geht es um das Taufbecken und die Bedeutung der Taufe, um die Bilder und Statuen von Heiligen und die eigene Heiligkeit, dem Raum der Kirche als heiligem Boden und der Frage nach dem, was mir heilig ist. Und gestern Abend ging es um die Frage, wie denn der Glaube zu uns und dann sehr direkt, wie er zu mir kam und dem Ambo, als dem Ort der Verkündigung des Wortes Gottes. Zum Beginn des Abends war das Lied vom "Suchen und Fragen" aus dem Gotteslob der Startimpuls. Ich lese Ihnen die Strophen gern vor. 1. Suchen und fragen, hoffen und sehn, miteinander glauben und sich verstehn, lachen, sich öffnen, tanzen befrein: So spricht Gott sein Ja, so stirbt unser Nein.2. Klagende hören, Trauernde sehn, aneinander glauben und sich verstehn, auf unsere Armut lässt Gott sich ein: So spricht Gott sein Ja, so stirbt unser Nein.3. Planen und bauen, Neuland begehn, füreinander glauben und sich verstehn, leben für viele, Brot sein und Wein: So spricht Gott sein Ja, so stirbt unser Nein.Unter all dem, was da angesprochen wird an Glaube, Hoffnung, Liebe, Barmherzigkeit und Zukunft, kommt immer die Zusage: So spricht Gott sein Ja, so stirbt unser Nein. Nach einem spannenden Abend mit den Fragen nach dem, wie ich selbst das Glauben und Leben als Christ gelernt habe und der Aufforderung, doch mal ganz konkret zu verkünden, was jede und jeder in der Glaubensweitergabe für wichtig hält, kam dieses Lied am Ende des Abends noch einmal. Und es klingt diesmal, nach allem miteinander besprechen und bedenken, ganz neu und die Zusage: so spricht Gott sein Ja, so stirbt unser Nein, wirkt auf die Teilnehmenden sehr erleichternd und nimmt den Druck von der Seele. Das miteinander, aneinander und füreinander glauben wird sehr real. Und wenn ich gerade nicht so glauben kann, kann ein anderer für mich und mit mir den Glauben teilen und mit Vertrauen an diesen Gott denken, der sich auf unsere Armut einlässt und trotzdem sein Ja spricht.

I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we're going to have an episode about a few different types of shrimp, with suggestions from Zachary and Ambo. Let's start with the ghost shrimp, since Zachary recently got an aquarium and has some ghost shrimp in it. The name ghost shrimp refers to various species of freshwater shrimp in the genus Palaemon. One of the most popular species to keep as a pet is Palaemonetes paludosus. It's sometimes called the glass shrimp since it's mostly transparent, or the eastern ghost shrimp. The eastern ghost shrimp can grow up to about an inch long, or 2.5 cm. It's native to the southeastern United States, mostly east of the Appalachian Mountains, where it lives in lakes and eats plankton. Even though the eastern ghost shrimp is mostly transparent, it can actually change its color to blend in with its background. Only one other species of ghost shrimp is known to do this, a very similar species that is only found in the Mississippi River. There are dozens of species of ghost shrimp, though, and they live throughout the world. Some species are freshwater, others are marine. Most are at least partially transparent and rarely grow more than two inches long, or maybe 5 cm at most. In some cases people catch them to eat, although more often they're caught to use as bait or fish food, and of course they're eaten by a whole lot of wild animals. We actually don't know a whole lot about many species of ghost shrimp. Some have only recently been discovered, and some are endangered. For instance, the Florida cave shrimp is only found in a single sinkhole near Gainesville, Florida. It's the only known species of ghost shrimp that lives in a cave, and it's closely related to the eastern ghost shrimp. The Florida cave shrimp grows a little over one inch long, or about 3 cm. It has eyes but doesn't need them, so they don't work anymore. It's mostly transparent with some white spots. It was discovered in 1953 during a scientific exploration of a sinkhole in the Squirrel Chimney Cave and hasn't been seen since 1973. It may even be extinct by now, but further explorations of the sinkhole have revealed that it connects with a much larger underwater cave system. Hopefully the little shrimp lives within this cave system, but it hasn't been found anywhere else so far and we know almost nothing about it. That's pretty much all there is to know about the ghost shrimp, so congratulations to Zachary for keeping a mysterious little friend in your aquarium. Next, Ambo wanted to learn about snapping shrimp. (Ambo also wanted to learn about the mantis shrimp, but it turns out that the mantis shrimp isn't actually a shrimp, or a mantis, and it deserves its own episode one day.) We talked about the snapping shrimp before in episode 273, but there's definitely more to learn about it. There are a whole lot of species--like, more than a thousand. They're especially common in coral reefs and live in colonies that communicate with each other by snapping their claws. The sound is so loud that it can sound like a gunshot, which is why it's sometimes called the pistol shrimp. The snapping shrimp is about the same size as the ghost shrimp, about 2 inches long at most, or 5 cm. One of its claws is ordinary, but the other claw is much bigger, and it's the large claw that makes the snapping sound. As we discussed in episode 273, the snapping shrimp will hide in a burrow or rock crevice with its antennae sticking out, and when a small animal like a fish happens by,

Chicago photographer Gene Ambo has shot more bands than you've had hot meals (and some of you really need to stop posting pictures of those meals). On this episode we talk to the long lens legend about his excellent photo book (HEAVY METRO: ACCESS ALL ERAS), shooting Motörhead (minus Fast Eddie), Lemmy's short shorts, the heyday of rock magazines, fake blood with Samhain vs. real blood with Iggy Pop, getting in on the ground floor with Metallica, Paul Natkin, the days of actually mailing shit, and Ben finally gets a good Enuff Z'nuff story. Society approves titles and status, especially in Japan.  We rise through the ranks and following the Peter Principle, we peak at our upper level of incompetence.  On the way up, we pick up titles and accrue status, respect and credence amplified through the power of our title.  Our personal power though could be suddenly exposed as bogus, when we get up to open our mouths in public.  This is one of those “The Emperor Has No Clothes” moments, when all is revealed, and we are found severely wanting. I was at a function recently and one of the bureaucratic elite in Japan was there to give a keynote presentation.  You generally get to become an elite official in Japan because you went to the right elementary school, middle school, high school and then University.  The reason these were the right schools up until University, is because they have the absolute best system in place to help you be a legend in memorization, rote learning and test taking.  At University you take a couple of years off, before you start cramming for the national selection exam, where again memory and exam technique are the most rewarded skills. You join a Ministry and work like a dog for a squillion hours every day, for years, simultaneously looking for a powerful patron to whom you can pledge total loyalty.  After decades of glacial progress, you emerge a grey haired, elite official.  Now part of the bureaucratic upper crust, you are often called upon to represent your organization and speak in public and the whole edifice comes crushing down. This was the case with this official – sent out into the firing line to promulgate the new way forward for his political masters, to impress everyone with the potency of their new policies, to win adherents to the path forward.  Total fizzer.  Why?  Because he spoke without energy or passion – nothing to indicate he felt at all impressed with his own recommendations.  He looked down at his papers and hardly glanced at the audience.  The opportunity to make eye contact, to combine words with the power of his face and to use the tonal variations available to his voice,  were in total absence.  He was a truly dull correspondent and we were completely dulled to his message.  There were no converts that day.  He could tick the box though – the task was completed, a total failure, but completed.  Astonishingly, during the post speech Q&A session, he perked up like a man really engaged – sadly it was only sustained for 30 seconds, but it showed he could do it.  So why didn't he do it while he commanded the stage?  No concept and no appreciation for the immense power at his beck and call, I would proffer.  His self-concept seemed to be that he was just a grey bureaucrat, whose job was to be grey and boring.  Obviously he had received no training or preparation for his task.  So his brilliant university pedigree meant little when he was publically outed at the podium.  He was a total failure as a communicator, he became a message killer, a brand assassin instead.  Was he an exception, a one-off, the runt of the litter among the bureaucratic ranks of the gifted, great and plausible public speakers?  No he was typical of that bevy of elite officials, who are mainly acquired status and have almost no personal power projection. Another vaunted profession is that of the elite government official who works in the foreign service.  This has been a bad week for me, as I suffered more of the same, this time from an Ambassador.  You would think that given the high profile nature of their job, they would be experts in promoting their countries.  No, this was another national reputation suicide effort.  Monotone, weak voice sputtering forth Ums and Ahs aplenty, with no engagement with the audience.  A voice that sounded so very weary and where the last three to four words in every sentence, just slowly petered out.  The energy and tone just subsided, guaranteeing the key message was a total downer, regardless of the actual content of the words.  Was this a one off – just the Ambo having a bad day?  No, I have seen this gentleman in action on many occasions and there is a scary consistency to his public speaking murder of his country's brand.  He is not unusual – in my 37 years of survey here, I have found that most Ambassadors are hopeless public speakers.  Yes, yes, there are some exceptions, but they just prove the rule (send me a list of more than 10 Ambassadors you know who are any good?). Do these career diplomats get proper training in the art of public speaking?  Astoundingly no!  They become elite government officials due to their ability to write cables and reports, which usually almost no one reads, by the way.  They have large analytical abilities and very big brains. They can really shine in small meetings, where they can one up their rivals and be the smartest intellect in the room.  So they get promoted and then get propelled to the front of the stage, handed the mic and away they go into ineptitude, writ large under lights, in front of the assembled masses.  The good thing is that all of their colleagues are equally hopeless, so it seems normal to them.  The fundamental error is they simply don't value having a skilled public presentation facility. The worst public speaking experience of my diplomatic career was giving a speech on behalf of one of our Ambassadors.  I was “our man in Osaka” and had to deliver the speech on his behalf.  The talk was in Japanese, which was no issue, as I had given around 400 public speeches in Japanese.  The content however was challenging.  There are four main types of speeches – to inform, to persuade, to entertain and to impress.  Foreign Ministries around the world, tend to love the data dump, inform variety.  This automatically leads to lots of dull information being imparted.  Why they don't go for the persuade type is a bit of a mystery to me and all countries seem to make that selection.  I absolutely gave it my best shot to liven it up, while sticking religiously to the approved Ambassadorial text, but what torture it was!  Imagine when you combine dead data with a dead delivery?  You have a massive bromide of winter surf Hawaiian North Shore frightening proportions, thundering down to bludgeon unsuspecting audiences into stupefaction. This is what we usually get from elite Government officials and it doesn't have to be like that.  There are some bright spots of hope though, even in Japan!  Previous Ambassador Motohiko Nishimura, who I met in Osaka in the mid-1990s, during his posting to the Kansai (yes, Kansai is considered a foreign country by Tokyo, so they have to send an Ambassador down there), was skilled and excellent.  English or Japanese, it did not matter, he was the consummate diplomat in the sense he could use his speaking power, to capture an audience and have them love Japan.  He finished his career as Ambassador to Portugal, and I am sure he was a tremendous asset for his country in creating support for Japan there. Hello to all of you elite officials and aspirants out there, stop boring us all to death, get some proper training and represent your Ministries with aplomb.  Boys and girls – be ambitious? No be persuasive!

Success story from Wenchi a small but spectacular village near Ambo.  The kids from Wenchi have learned by themselves more than they can learn in a kinder garden  or elementary school.  An 8 year old Kelbessa was able to turn on a disabled camera by going to settings all by himself.  This kid have no TV nor any schooling. WA is in the middle of an ambulance crisis. The state was shocked this week to learn a Perth grandmother had died after being forced to wait 2 and a half hours for a paramedic. Well just Hours after Georgina Wild died alone on her couch, an elderly man in Bellevue also passed away from a suspected heart attack after waiting two hours for an ambulance. Theresa Stewart-Ambo and Keolu Fox are the co-directors of the Indigenous Futures Institute at the University of California San Diego. K. Wayne Yang is a critical theorist and social critic who writes about popular culture, social movements, urban education, critical pedagogy, decolonization, and many other subjects. Stewart-Ambo and Fox are two authors with wildly divergent research interests. Fox does work in genomic research and is an assistant professor at University of California, San Diego, affiliated with the Department of Anthropology, the Global Health Program, the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute, the Climate Action Lab, and the Indigenous Futures Lab, while Stewart-Ambo is an Assistant Professor in the Education Studies program at UC San Diego. Despite these distinct research focuses, they co-direct the Indigenous Futures Institute with a visionary sense of collective purpose: for the Institute to signify beyond the individual demands of each member's disciplines. IFI is exceptional for the projects that are being worked on there, but it is also important because it is Indigenous-run at the highest level. This is not something that we encounter very much, and certainly not enough. The Institute is about imagining Indigenous design hubs outside of the constraints of, as Yang explains, the nation state, because that social formation, and its obsession with borders, cannot grasp the vital nature of living and interconnected bioregions. When I asked Yang, in this conversation, about what demilitarization could mean from an Indigenous perspective, he didn't talk about any one conflict, but instead focused on the land and the context of a total war on nature, and how this language of interconnected bioregions allows us to think in radical ways about demilitarization beyond the “removal of troops.” While there is a discursive shift, among critical people, toward decolonization in the form of land acknowledgments, Stewart-Ambo talks about how universities are still clearly not structured with Indigenous prosperity in mind. She argues that so much of the language around equity, diversity and inclusion is about diversion, and either overlooks Indigenous peoples or actively plays into stereotypes. She demands “respectful engagement” at the highest levels and wants land acknowledgment statements to materialize relationships, with institutions actually stepping up and doing their part. No more superficial land acknowledgments, Fox says, because they so obviously function as a form of misdirection, a way of distracting the public from the persistence of privatization, extraction and harm done to Indigenous communities. What is so different, then, about the Indigenous Futures Institute, from their perspective, and I'm starting to see, as an outsider, how stark this difference is from the ways in which people are taught in the traditional Eurocentric university, what's so different is perhaps embodied by this idea of dream tanks: in direct opposition to the notion of think tanks, where, as Yang puts it, we are told how to think, rather than given time and space to explore what may be thought. Fox talks about the idea of a futurist fluency, against the nightmare scenarios that we face under settler colonial capitalism, and gives us this incredible vision for a moment where, in the “husk of colonialism,” communities can make something “beautiful,” innovating out of the remnants of militarism and industrialization.
