“ Two of the devil's biggest lies are ‘You're the only one who struggles with this kind of stuff' and ‘You can't tell anyone.' Sin thrives in that kind of dark secrecy.” So says author and apologist Sam Allberry during this conversation with Russell Moore. The two discuss Allberry's new book, One with My Lord, and consider various ways people interpret the Bible's perspective on sexuality. They talk about gender identity, marriage, and what it means when God says it is not good for humans to be alone. Allberry and Moore consider the importance of friendship, the value of community, and the impact of social media on mental health.  They also discuss Allberry's experience with Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM), the Billy Graham rule, and fostering organizational cultures of transparency. If you're starting to talk to your kids about God's design for marriage when they're preteens or teens—you might be too late. Author and pastor Sam Allberry knows parents need key discussions with kids about the ways God's ideas for marriage get it right—and he's authored a children's book to generate the conversations you need. If marriage points to Christ and the church, then maybe anniversaries are more significant than weddings. Because anyone can make a promise, but not everyone keeps a promise. And it's the keeping of the promise that really points to the faithfulness of Christ to His people. -- Sam Allberry Show Notes and Resources Connect with Sam Allberry at samallberry.comor on Instagram @samallberry Revitalize your marriage: 50% off Weekend to Remember Getaways, Sep 4-18! There is hardly a more incendiary topic of conversation than homosexuality and the Bible. It is a debate that people of faith have been forced to deal with, because it confronts them in the public square, schools, government, neighborhoods and in their families. Pastor Sam Allberry's take on the issue may surprise many people. His position is purely personal but could have widespread influence, as he was the featured pastor at the memorial service for Dr. Tim Keller back in August. Keller chose him to give the homily which made a lot of people curious, but when Keller was dying of pancreatic cancer, he himself designed his service choosing the hymns, the Scripture readings and the people who would give the all-important message. So, why Sam Allberry? On this episode of Lighthouse Faith, Allberry answers that question and the central theme of his ministry. He hails from England; is a pastor and has authored several books on God and human sexuality like, "What God Has to Say About Our Bodies", "Seven Myths About Singleness", and "Is God Anti-Gay?" It should also be noted that Allberry, for as long as he can remember, has been attracted to men, both romantically and sexually. He says he was bullied as a child for being gay, and as an adult, was bullied by the Anglican synod members for rejecting the church's liberal stance on homosexuality. Hear his nuanced response to the question, "Is God anti-gay?" And, "What did Jesus say or didn't say about homosexuality?" Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Conversations around human sexuality are some of the most sensitive and complex in our culture today and around the church more specifically. Sam Allberry is a celibate, same-sex-attracted pastor/theologian who has written extensively and spoken all over the world on these topics. In this conversation, Matt chats with Sam Allberry about the tenth anniversary edition of Is God-Anti Gay? and 7 Myths About Singleness. Is God Anti-Gay? is a sensitive exploration of the Bible's teaching on sexuality that's been written to help both Christians and non-Christians struggling with the Bible's teaching on this issue, and how the gospel is good news for everyone, whatever their sexual orientation. In 7 Myths About Singleness, Sam seeks to help Christians—married and unmarried alike—value singleness as a gift from God so that we can all encourage singles to take hold of the unique opportunities their singleness affords and see their role in the flourishing of the church as a whole. ABOUT Sam Allberry is a pastor, apologist, author and speaker. Sam's first time talking about the Bible in public was to his youth group about a year after giving his life to the Lord. He's thankful it was a young audience because, as he recalls, it was a disaster. He was young with no real guidance and had no idea what he was doing. Sam gave his first real sermon while he was in college. This was a very different experience for him. He felt the weight of preaching and experienced his own transformation during his preparation. Sam had a sense of the Lord speaking through him. Over the years, Sam's sermon style has evolved. He was recently preparing for a sermon text that he had preached on before. Sam pulled out a sermon from 10-12 years ago and found many truths, but felt it lacked Jesus. As a young preacher, Sam often did his best to explain the passage and transfer the data of his research to his listeners. He now has a sharper focus resulting in more exegesis on the cutting room floor. Sam wants to spend more time talking about Jesus, framed by the text of the sermon. He explains teaching is about helping someone understand the text, but preaching is what he wants the heart of his audience set upon.Sam also hits on a number of topics in this podcast including sermons that interest non-believers, meeting in person vs online, and hand writing his notes. There is a wealth of knowledge and some real gems that should encourage any expositor. Sam Allberry is a pastor, apologist and speaker. He is the author of a number of books, including Is God Anti-Gay?, Why Bother with Church?, 7 Myths about Singleness, and What God Has To Say About Our Bodies. Sam Allberry delivered a message to the Arizona Regional Chapter of TGC titled “Is God Anti-Gay?” Springboarding from his own personal struggle with homosexuality, Allberry addressed the question of sexuality and its association with sin according to Jesus's own words. He refuted the idea that Jesus was silent on the issue of sexual ethics; in fact, he intensified the already stringent sexual ethic of the Old Testament. Jesus's expectation for his people in marriage and sexuality—just as in all of life—is high. It requires the denial of one's own sinful, selfish desires in order to become who we were meant to be and receive life. It is a costly proposition. And it is always worth it.

When Sam Allberry wrote his best-selling little book “Is God Anti-Gay?” back in 2013, it was one of the few good books available on the subject. Five years down the track, it remains an excellent short primer to the main questions that both Christians and non-Christians have about God and homosexuality. In this episode, we talk with Sam about the main message of his book, about the way that the landscape has continued to evolve over the past five years, and about the challenge of presenting the message of the Bible about homosexuality not only as true, but as good. The strength of Sam’s book (and this conversation) is that he approaches the whole subject from the starting point of the gospel: “The message of Jesus on sex has been countercultural and challenging to every single culture. And is challenging to every single person. So it is not the case that Jesus comes up and says, ‘To all heterosexual people, you know, well done, good job, keep it up! As you were.’ You know. ‘Bless you.’ And then he says to everybody else, ‘Oh dearie me, we’ve got a problem.’ Jesus says to all of us, we have a huge problem.” For show notes and transcript, visit https://ccl.moore.edu.au/2018/10/04/podcast-episode-020/
