As athletes and coaches, we can often get lost focusing on our own path, our own goals, and our own struggles. In reality, no matter what your personality, past or purpose, none of us can succeed on our own. Vote by Design is an award-winning voter literacy project incubated at Stanford University's Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (d.school) that reimagines civic education and voter literacy through the lens of design. Vote by Design's free workshop is nonpartisan, issue-agnostic and designed to provide first-time voters with what one teacher called “the driver's test of voting” and another said it offered "lifelong skills every student should learn.” To date, Vote by Design has been offered to more than 1,000 students across the United States, from the deep red state of Montana to the deep South of Georgia and across California. One student shared, “I thought it was hopeless, but now I feel like I have a way to productively engage.” Another said, “I used to think what my parents thought, and now I think for myself." Vote by Design partnered with Citizen Film, the celebrated Bay Area documentary studio, to capture the student experience as they develop their capacity to be deliberative, informed, lifelong participants in the democratic process. Join Lisa Kay Solomon of Vote by Design and Sam Ball of Citizen Film as they premiere film clips and share insights from young voters' dialogues with one another about what they want for their shared future. Well it's the last day of a most strange year, and we're here to celebrate our unknown future by looking back at some of the best and some of the worst movies from 2017. Another year full of competing superhero movies, although Wonder Woman stands pretty tall (thanks again, Patty Jenkins). But we thought there might also be some gems you may have missed, like, The Overnight, Free Fire, and Brigsby Bear. We have some fascinatingly weird 2017 trivia we want to share, cinematic tangents, and we all share our favorite and least favorite from 2017, all in the name of helping you choose the perfect movie to watch. Find the Movie Show Theater Facebook page and recommend a movie you'd like us to tackle... and we will! Seriously! Sam Ball (writer, novelist), Joey Fandel (filmmaker), and Norm Burns (actor, musician) sit down to discuss as many movies as we could in 59 minutes. Thanks for supporting Movie Show Theater!
To celebrate the middle of summer, we landed on a piece of true summer nostalgia (at least it is for me. And it takes 5 of us sitting around with microphones to explain just how bad this movie was. And is. Unless you've seen it, then you already know. Is it so bad it's funny? Is it just bad? Is it even funny? And did sentient cocaine direct this trash classic? No, but it might as well have been. The accents, the fashion, and the whole thing about Bernie being dead.. Man, I tell ya, this movie has a lot to give. We got 80's trivia for you, things you didn't know, and things you didn't know you needed to know. Mike Feldhaus, Sam Ball, Norm Burns, and Joey Fandel helped me out with this one. Here it is, Weekend At Bernie's from beautiful 1989. Thanks for supporting this little thing we do.
It only took this podcast 3 years to finally arrive in Fargo, North Dakota, but I'm so glad we did. Friend and fellow filmmaker Joey Fandel joined me this week to help pick apart this beloved tale of murder, betrayal, and goofy accents. There's so much going on under the surface of Fargo, we barely touched on the music, the gorgeous visual aesthetic, the washed out color palettes, the TV spin-off, behind the scenes stories, and the original concept, but we did our best, OK? We also talk Wonder Woman (yes, again), we share the rated R movies that scarred us as children, a rude phone call interruption from Sam Ball, a fantastically appropriate song break, and a great deal more. This is (almost) my favorite Coen Brothers film and I'm really excited to talk about it as you'll notice by my tone of voice. Thanks for listening and thanks for supporting Movie Show Theater!
Well it's ladies night here at Movie Show Theater because our guest, Sam Ball (actor and writer), chose You've Got Mail from 1998. Join us as we discuss cybersex, America Online, Steve Zahn, and more forgotten relics from the 90's (was that mean?) We also felt to the need for some 90's reminiscing, as well as some 90's trivia. You've Got Mail was a charming Nora Ephron film with Tom Hanks as a .. kind of manipulative sociopath.. so to speak. The second time this story has been remade, we found some noteworthy moments this time around. You've Got Mail serves as our vessel into looking at the evolution of the romantic comedy, and why movies like this just can't exist anymore. Thanks for listening and thanks for supporting us!
Oh my God, it's Flight of the Navigator! Sam Ball joined me to revisit this classic hoping it stands the test of time. And... it for sure holds up! The story was, dare I say, ahead of its time, and there is so much content purely designed for adults. Pee-Wee Herman (Paul Reubens credited as Paul Mall) voices MAX, the only slightly creepy robot alien from the planet Phaelon. Sam and I watched this together, and we both agree that this piece of 80's nostalgia is like peering into a wholesome time capsule of cheesy goodness, but we're about to look a lot deeper and explore some things we totally missed as ten year old nerds. Join us and step back into a time when we all had a little more imagination. This is Movie Show Theater! And hey, thanks!
We have a super weird show for you today! We have a few guests joining us via Skype to help out us out with some (virtually) spoiler-free discussion on Stranger Things. This show is taking over the internet, and it's no surprise to us! The show is a fitting homage to 1980's culture, and an incredibly effective retro-chic Netflix original series. But the first half of the show we'll be jumping back into movies to discuss Sam Ball and CJ Johnson's film that was just released today! Watch it for free at www.speedintothemoon.com Speed Racer: Behind the Wheel is a short film that was written, edited, and directed by Joey Fandel. He had a bit of help along the way, I've heard. Sam Ball plays Speed Racer and CJ Johnson is a sound wizard. I've seen it and you should check it out. It's hilarious, under 20 minutes, and for sure NOT for young children. Actually, this episode probably isn't either. We'll also dish out some trivia, and I find out I am terrible to play trivia with. Please pardon our less perfect sound, as it was our first Skype experience. Thanks for your tolerance and thanks for supporting Movie Show Theater!
