In this week's episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo rewinds to a pre-digital apocalypse while chatting with Kyle Mooney about his upcoming film, “Y2K.” The comedy follows two high school outcasts determined to crash the biggest New Year's Eve party of their lives on December 31, 1999 - the dreaded eve of Y2K. What's that wafting through the air? That's the scent of the podcast's 200th episode! That or... gravy. Reheat yourself with Season 2, Episode 13 of Family Matters. Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.Join our countdown to number one (and our slow descent into madness) in all the places you expect internet people to be:Website: jumpingtheshuttle.spaceEmail: jumpingtheshuttle@gmail.comInstagram: @JumpingTheShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577Twitter: @JumpingShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577TikTok: @JumpingTheShuttle / @ThatAlexD / @dak577Brought to you by Smooth My Balls

[School of Movies 2023] This is one you almost certainly won't have heard of, but will be happy you found it through School of Movies. It's the tale of a young man named James who has grown up in a post-apocalyptic bunker, raised by his loving parents and wondering what's outside. One night a raid by the cops results in his "parents" being carted off to jail, as it turns out they kidnapped him as an infant and hid him here. Now he has to come to terms with the real world and the awkward fit of his new family and potential friends. Thing is though, he's a colossal nerd for Brigsby Bear. That long-running TV show about a space-faring teddy with a surprisingly deep lore for James to obsess over. However, double-twist... Brigsby was never shown on TV because it was being created by his kidnapper-Father (played by Mark Hamill). Undaunted, James sets out on a personal quest to finish the story for himself. In an unusual show setup we examine the film through two contrasting lenses. Firstly from a long-time fan whose obscure commission this is, and secondly through a professional expert on mental conditions who has only just seen it. Guests: Nama Chibitty @namathenerd Dr Hunter Mulcare @realhuntermmm
In this episode, the boys share their top ten favorite original film scores of all time. They intentionally share the love with a ton of different composers and styles, but there is of course a undeniable presense of the legend, their favorite: Hans Zimmer. Dustin gets into some deeper personal themes the music evokes, and Jake goes on another long Star Wars rant (at least it's been awhile). The guys also unexpectedly defend SKA music, of all things. Dustin gains ground in the Movie Draft with Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse coming out! He also gives quick reviews for Fast X, Air, The Mother, Brigsby Bear, and Extraction. Jake gives his review of Paint and reminds people (again) that they need to watch the horror-mystery series "From" which is incredible. An original and unique film about finding friendships and one's self through perseverance in creativity. An indie-style film that is humorous in how it presents a young man moving through past trauma through innocent eyes. A fun piece that expresses conviction and the will of the human spirit without being too corny or heavy handed. *No Spoilers*. (REVIEW - WEEK 5, YEAR 5) . This week’s Nose is the first one to say it’s a great country, but it’s a strange culture. George Carlin’s American Dream is a new, two-part, nearly-four-hour HBO documentary directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio. At 225 minutes, it actually runs 45 minutes shorter than Apatow’s previous HBO doc, The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling. And: Brigsby Bear is a 2017 comedy-drama written by Kevin Costello and Kyle Mooney from a story by Mooney and directed by Dave McCary. Mooney is one of four major departures from the cast of Saturday Night Live last weekend. Brigsby Bear stars Mooney, Claire Danes, Mark Hamill, Greg Kinnear, Andy Samberg, and Matt Walsh. A fateful moment in Kyle Mooney's life was when his high school hip hop group went up in flames. Quite literally. All his equipment was destroyed in a fire. Lacking an outlet for his creativity, Kyle gravitated toward improv and making digital videos, two skills that would eventually land him on Saturday Night Live. Kyle tells Marc his SNL story (of course) and talks about the fulfillment of making his first feature film, Brigsby Bear. He also explains why he likes going for human reactions in comedy as opposed to the inherently funny ones, which explains the tone and humor of a lot of his videos. This episode is sponsored by Mark Manson's new book Everything is F*@!ed: A Book About Hope, Turo, Allbirds, and Starbucks Tripleshot Energy. Our annual tradition of counting down our favorite movies of calendar years continues, with a discussion of the best in cinema from 2017. We're firmly of the opinion that ranking art -- and even giving awards for art -- is stupid, but people like lists! And what's great about shows like this is: hopefully it exposes you to stuff you've not seen, and it makes your world a little bigger and a little more empathic. We hope you enjoy! The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview SNL writer/actor Kyle Mooney & SNL writer/director Dave McCary. BRIGSBY BEAR is one of the most honest, sincere, non-cynical & infectiously cool movies you'll see in a long time. Co-written and starring Saturday Night Live's Kyle Mooney and directed by SNL's Dave McCary (who met in 4th Grade and have been working together ever since - co-writer Kevin Costello came much later…in the 7th Grade). Dave and Kyle went on to co-found the Good Neighbor Comedy sketch group (which included Beck Bennett & Nick Rutherford – both in Brigsby), and now are both on SNL (as well as Beck). Produced by 3311 Productions, YL Pictures, Lord Miller and The Lonely Island, BRIGSBY BEAR will open in the US on July 28. Starring Kyle Mooney, Claire Danes, Mark Hamill, Greg Kinnear, Andy Samberg, Matt Walsh, Michaela Watkins, Jane Adams, Beck Bennett, Alexa Demie, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Kate Lyn Sheil & Ryan Simpkins. “BRIGSBY BEAR is a film about friendship, family and nostalgia,” Kyle Mooney. It is also about a man-sized teddy bear who repeatedly saves the galaxy with his twin-sister sidekicks. And, super heroes, goodness, fantasy, pop-culture, imagination, dreams, fandom, creativity....
