In 2008, Lithuanian student Milda Mitkutė realised she had too many clothes when she was moving out.She told her friend Justas Janauskas and together they came up with a website to sell them. It later became Vinted, the online marketplace, which now has more than 500 million items listed for sale across 23 countries. Milda speaks to Rachel Naylor and tells her that they originally forgot to add a ‘buy' button.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from the death of Adolf Hitler, the first spacewalk and the making of the movie Jaws, to celebrity tortoise Lonesome George, the Kobe earthquake and the invention of superglue. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: Eva Peron – Argentina's Evita; President Ronald Reagan and his famous ‘tear down this wall' speech; Thomas Keneally on why he wrote Schindler's List; and Jacques Derrida, France's ‘rock star' philosopher. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the civil rights swimming protest; the disastrous D-Day rehearsal; and the death of one of the world's oldest languages.(Photo: Milda Mitkutė. Can circularity deliver on both carbon reduction and financial performance?Today, we're joined by Nic Gorini, Managing Partner at Spin Ventures, a fund dedicated to the circular and regenerative economy. In this episode, Nic reframes circularity as a path to business efficiency, not just environmental good. Forget the “waste = trash” mindset. Circularity is about designing smarter systems that cut costs, increase profit, and reduce environmental impact. As Nic puts it: “Less carbon, more profit.”Still have doubts? What if the secret to skyrocketing your business lies not just in sales, but in understanding your customers on a deeper level? In this episode of Curious Leadership, Dominic Monkhouse chats with James Peach, award winning speaker, investor and brand marketing expert whose portfolio includes roles at Innocent, Uber, and Vinted, about customer obsession, and how it shapes brand marketing strategies that resonate and influence buyer perceptions. James dives head first into the very essence of brand marketing, how it transcends mere promotion to become a powerful tool for problem-solving and emotional engagement. Hear how effective brand marketing can transform what customers think about a business, driving loyalty and growth, and how the greatest challenge impacting every business lies in measuring brand impact versus direct sales metrics. Discover the vital collaboration between both brand and growth teams and how clear purpose is essential for motivating employees to enhance organisational efficiency - a principle not just applicable to large corporations but impacts all businesses, regardless of size or industry. Reflecting on his scale-up experience, James shares how fast-paced decision making can dramatically influence brand perception and the importance of maintaining a customer obsession throughout the journey. James's story is not just confined to corporate boardrooms and beanbags; it crosses over into global adventures and personal growth by pushing himself to the max - 2 years of solo cycling across the world, mirroring his leadership philosophy - embrace discomfort for growth and leverage experience for success.Book recommendations:Good to Great - Jim CollinsRadical Candor - Kim ScottWhen the Dust Settles - Lucy EasthopeWhat Got You Here Won't Get You There - Marshall GoldsmithSign up to receive our weekly Curious Leadership newsletter: https://subscribe.monkhouseandcompany.comFollow us on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/monkhouse-and-companyhttps://www.linkedin.com/showcase/curiousleadershipSubscribe wherever you get your podcasts: https://link.cohostpodcasting.com/52495078-fc00-41b8-a42e-9371bb2fa3e0?d=sZwdKMGh4

In this episode of the Don't Panic, It's Just Data podcast, Kevin Petrie, VP of Research at BARC and the podcast host, is joined by Dainius Jocas, Search Engineer at Vinted, and Radu Gheorghe, Software Engineer at Vespa.ai. They discuss how Vinted, an online marketplace for secondhand products, modernised its data architecture to address new AI search use cases and the challenges faced with Elasticsearch. From the switch to Vespa and the advantages of supporting multiple languages and complex queries, the podcast offers insights on the trade-offs organisations must think about when updating their search systems, especially regarding AI and machine learning applications.Vinted Elasticsearch ChallengesVinted's search architecture was built on Elasticsearch before they switched to Vespa. Elasticsearch is a functional system that presents a few major challenges. With over 20 supported languages, the company's "index per language" approach created significant sharding problems, leading to infrastructure imbalances and constant adjustments."The index for the French language, the biggest language that we support, was more than three times bigger than the second biggest language, which created imbalances in the Elasticsearch data nodes' load," Jocas explained. In addition to these technical obstacles, organisational issues arose as teams responsible for different parts of the search process found themselves "pointing fingers at each other at an increasing rate." The need for a more integrated, effective solution became clear. The Solution: A New Platform for a New EraThe search for a better solution led Vinted to Vespa. The initial adoption was a "one success story" when a machine learning engineer, working on recommendations, discovered that Vespa was ten times faster than Elasticsearch for their use case. This initial benchmark, run on a single decommissioned server, was a "true testament to how efficient Vespa is when it comes to serving requests,” Jocas told Petrie.Vespa helped Vinted solve their language problem by allowing it to set a language per document. Thus, it eliminates the need for separate indexes and the associated sharding headaches. As Jocas put it, "We got out of the sharding problem once and for all."TakeawaysVinted faced challenges with its initial Elasticsearch architecture. The need for better integration between matching and ranking was identified.Vespa outperformed Elasticsearch in handling image search and recommendations.Transitioning to Vespa involved significant learning and support from developers.Vespa allows for language-specific document handling, simplifying architecture.Organisations must evaluate the complexity and volume of their data before transitioning.Vespa is optimised for query performance, while Elasticsearch excels in data writing. The learning curve for Vespa can be steep, but support is available. It's important to focus on optimising new systems rather than emulating old ones.Partial updates in Vespa are more efficient than in Elasticsearch.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Vinted and...

Secondhand marketplace Vinted needs little introduction, with tens of millions registered users around the world who use its app to sell everything from clothes to furniture to even lava lamps. But the (profitable) company is swiftly becoming far more than a marketplace: it also has its own shipping infrastructure, a payments business and — as of recently — a venture arm.Despite that, CEO Thomas Plantenga is far from complacent: “If we really want to make secondhand first choice, then everything that we have needs to be a lot better.”“The only thing that protects you is if you consistently improve what you have, because if you don't, somebody's going to see an opportunity to do things better than you do. And if somebody else is delivering more value to users than you, then you don't deserve the position you're in.”In this week's episode of the Sifted podcast, host Amy asks Thomas what's next for Vinted, how does it plan to stay three steps ahead of the pack and what are its exit plans.Key moments: 2:53 - Vinted's key businesses4.00 - Vinted's userbase7.30 - Secondhand market globally 9.00 - How can Vinted improve?13.00 - About the logistics business18.14 - About the payments business25.06 - Thomas' stance on competition27.30 - About Vinted Ventures31.03 - M&A strategy 33.26 - What does Vinted Ventures wants to invest in?35.24 - What could go wrong at Vinted?38.18 - Advice for CEOs41.09 - Vinted's exit

Why is the model of a Nobel prize winner not necessarily good science? What is “good” modelling? Is access to information enough to change a system behavior? This episode is the second part of a long interview with Laetitia Bornes, a Doctor in Human-Computer Interaction, Systems Engineering and Systemic Design who is one of the co-authors of a research paper investigating the claims made by the second hand digital platform Vinted about the avoided carbon emissions thanks to its operations. As presented in the first part, their findings were surprising, enlightening for the IT sector and nuanced! In this second part, Gaël Duez and Laetitia Bornes moved away from the Vinted use case and discussed modelling, the scientific method and Systems Thinking in general. You can enjoy this discussion without having listened to the first episode however we would suggest you do so to enjoy all the references, especially to the Vinted study. Among the topics covered in this second part are: - An impressive transparency exercise about the limit of the model used for the Vinted use case, - Why models are “wrong” and how to still use them purposefully, - Why a Nobel prize modeling in his lab without publishing isn't doing science (yet), - Access to information and its connection to the four main categories of leverage points, - The concept of protopia, And much more! ❤️ Subscribe, follow, like, ... stay connected the way you want to never miss an episode, twice a month, on Tuesday! Beşiktaş suffered a devastating 1-2 loss at home against Çaykur Rizespor in their final home match of the season, missing a golden opportunity to overtake Samsunspor for third place in the Süper Lig standings. Despite João Mário's quick equalizer after Samet Akaydin's header gave Rizespor the lead, the Black Eagles once again struggled to create clear chances — a recurring theme throughout a frustrating season. As news broke that Trabzonspor had taken the lead against Samsunspor late in the second half, hope briefly surged through the stands. But that hope was dashed when Rizespor's Adama Sowe capitalized on critical errors from late substitutes Emirhan Topçu and Yakup Arda, scoring a 91st-minute winner to silence the home crowd. Ole Gunnar Solskjær's tactical decisions drew heavy criticism, especially the removal of the lively Keny Arroyo early in the second half and a puzzling double substitution during stoppage time that proved disastrous. For the first time, Beşiktaş fans inside the stadium visibly turned on the Norwegian coach, with social media and Turkish press intensifying calls for a local managerial change.

Can a digital company be “carbon negative”? What should we think of these claims of “tons of carbon avoided” coming from 2nd hand platforms such as Vinted or Back Market? Dr Laetita Bornes conducted research on Vinted claims, investigating its data sources and the methodology used with her colleague David Ekchazer. Their findings were surprising, enlightening for the IT sector and nuanced! Among the ones she share with Gaël Duez in this first part of the episode were: - The pitfalls of assessing "Tech for Good" even using Life-Cycle Analysis, - The complexity of rebound effects and other indirect effects, - How to improve things as a Designer, … and as a CEO! - The need for a systemic perspective and some tools to build it, and much more! And because this conversation was so rich that it couldn't be reduced to a one hour discussion, this episode comes in 2 parts, the first one focusing on the Vinted use case and the second one where we discussed modelling, the scientific method and Systems Thinking in general. ❤️ Subscribe, follow, like, ... stay connected the way you want to never miss an episode, twice a month, on Tuesday! Beşiktaş were forced to settle for a frustrating 1-1 draw away at Alanyaspor, dropping back to 4th place in the Süper Lig, now one point behind Samsunspor in the race for 3rd and European qualification. Under the leadership of Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Beşiktaş found themselves on the back foot early, conceding in the first half to a goal by Hwang. But the Black Eagles fought back in the second half, with Rafa Silva scoring the equalizer. The real spark came from 19-year-old Keny Arroyo, whose energetic substitute appearance changed the momentum of the match. Arroyo even assisted what looked to be a last-minute winner by Semih Kılıçsoy, but the goal was inexplicably disallowed by referee Mehmet Türkmen, citing a foul committed by Rafa Silva nearly 10 seconds before the goal—a decision that baffled players and fans alike. Why wasn't the whistle blown immediately? And why intervene after the play had progressed so far? This controversial call could cost Beşiktaş third place, meaning two extra qualifying rounds in Europe this summer and a shorter break for the players.
