The historical Slowenian town in a scenic bend of the River Krka is going through a digital revolution. To better use precious natural resources and enhance live quality and prosperity, the city is implementing a full smart city infrastructure. Together with SAP and partner Telekom Slovenia, Novo mesto installed sensors all over the city to gather data on all aspects of the environment from water usage and air pollution to the impact of light pollution caused by artificial light which alters natural conditions. The data are collected with SAP Leonardo and analyzed with SAP Analytics, all IoT platforms run on the SAP Cloud Platform. The data are used by the municipal government to make operational decisions and by citizens using mobile apps, for example, to find available parking spaces. “We realize that managing city resources is not just a job for the government. We have to help people make lifestyle changes,” says the deputy mayor, Bostjan Grobler. “It's not enough to motivate people to buy electric cars; we have to make sure they can easily park and recharge them.” Learn how real-time insights help cities provide better citizen experiences: https://www.sap.com/industries/smart-cities.html
In this episode of the IoT For All Podcast, SAP Senior Vice President and Global Head of Internet of Things, Elvira Wallis, joins us to talk about the power of IoT to bring real-world data into industrial processes. We cover some of the most important considerations for companies looking to prove out new business models or improve existing processes using IoT, including the early planning process and ensuring that ROI is achieved in the proof of concept. As SVP and Global Head of IoT at SAP, Elvira leads IoT investment at SAP, managing the entire lifecycle of new IoT business solutions as they are brought to market. To kick off the episode, Elvira gave a bit of background about SAP. Though known for its leadership in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) software space, SAP has evolved to support customers in building solutions to leverage real-world data and improve process efficiency through connected technology. Elvira said that customers come in at all stages of ideation, from those that have a process they know they could be doing better to companies looking to prove out the value of IoT.As an IoT company, “people don’t come to you and say, ‘I want to buy a slice of IoT,’ like a cheesecake,” Elvira said, “most people come to you because they want an improved process or business model and IoT is a means to an end.”And while SAP can do a lot, Elvira was clear that they don’t do it all. “IoT and IIoT,” she said, “are very clearly an ecosystem endeavor.” Many IoT applications require highly specialized sensors and compatible hardware and those needs are best fulfilled by the experts.Elvira also spoke to some of the pros and cons of operating on the edge versus in the cloud. With her experience leading SAP’s Edge Services and Leonardo IoT products, Elvira said that she’s seen rising interest in bringing business processes to the source of the data. Where latency and intermittent connectivity are concerns, edge processing is really the way to go. And while cloud computing can raise the cost of an IoT solution, it provides a lot of flexibility to customize and add parts to existing infrastructure.Whether a company is in the beginning stages of exploring what IoT can do for them, or looking to prove out a specific model or solution, Elvira said two particular challenges tend to crop up across the board. At the beginning stages of developing an IoT solution, Elvira said it’s critical to develop clear KPIs and give all of the key stakeholders ownership over the success of the project. “Success breeds success,” Elvira said, and that early planning is vital to the success of any development. To close out the conversation, we asked Elvira to share her thoughts on the long-term effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the IoT industry on the whole. Elvira said that, with companies now looking at their own ability to adapt and remotely manage their assets, she expected a surge in IoT investment and intelligent products. At the top of most companies’ agendas, Elvira said, will be the supply chain as companies work to ensure they won’t get blindsided by similar challenges in the future.Interested in connecting with Elvira? Is Artificial Intelligence a chance or a risk for humankind and businesses? When we mention artificial intelligence (AI), many people think of gloomy future in which machines are completely replacing human workers making an army of unemployed people that are good to nobody and living on the verge of poverty. The question is, are we looking at things in the right perspective? What if artificial intelligence is something that is bringing humanity back to humans? Bringing humans back to their roots? Taking the heavy lifting processes from their shoulders and enabling them to focus on more important things? Freeing them from tedious, repetitive tasks, and giving them a chance to spread their creativity and bring real value? That is how Marc Teerlink, Global Vice President at SAP sees the goal of artificial intelligence and its development. Marc Teerlink began his professional journey by applying data around observed consumer behavior to statistics. He deeply understood that the value of data would very soon surpass the value of oil. At the same time, he realized data itself is useless if one did not have the knowledge to interpret it. If you know how to interpret and how to use data, which is precisely what artificial intelligence provides, you have a very powerful tool! Data is a driver for growth in today's economy, and only if used in the right perspective, it provides insights that lead to actions which create business value. How many times have you heard about the “latest and greatest” tech in your industry? This tech is only proven when real case studies show how it can solve real problems. Brenton O'Callaghan is the Global Head of SAP Leonardo at BlueFin Solutions, and his team is seeing how their newest technology is not just promising solutions in the future. It’s actually solving real business problems today. Brenton has been with BlueFin for 8 years and much of his job involves taking a look at the “new and shiny stuff”: emerging technology. Using this tech he demonstrates how SAP can be an innovative platform. Brenton and his team know that in order to attract new customers they need to use updated technology that shows off the capabilities of what new platforms can do. And most importantly, they need to backup their claims with the efficacy of many different use case examples. This is what excites Brenton’s team internally: “How do we get clients from A - Z using our newest tech?” Brenton joined us for this episode of Alliance Aces to talk about new technology and joint solutions.

With the introduction of their cognitive platform SAP Leonardo, SAP is making a play to move from being a traditional ‘system of records’ to a front-runner for digital innovation. So where does that leave S/4 HANA? It still remains the core of SAP, but they are now focusing on an ‘AI-first’ strategy. With blockchain being integrated into SAP Leonardo, tremendous opportunities exist in machine learning. Yet, questions still remain. Among them, whether SAP is ready to compete with IBM Bluemix. With huge strategic investments in Azure, AWS, IBM Bluemix, the Platform Wars are heating up. What is the SAP gameplan? Guido Ter Riet talks to Frank Wammes after wrapping up Day 1 of the Sapphire Now 2017 Conference in Orlando, Florida. It was all about S/4 HANA, but with an emphasis on SAP Leonardo. SAP Leonardo is the orchestration layer to build apps on the HANA platform. With its cognitive capabilities, SAP Leonardo will enable companies to develop apps using latest technologies such as IoT, machine learning, Blockchain, etc. Stay tuned for more expert insights from Sapphire Now 2017. SAP made a major announcement recently. It announced its new SAP Leonardo brand for its Internet of Things portfolio of software products. At the same time SAP also announced its new SAP Leonardo Jump-Start program - a program of software and services at a fixed price to help companies starting out on IoT projects, and SAP also announced a new SAP Leonardo event. to be held in July. I blogged about the announcement but I also felt it would be great to have SAP EVP for the Internet of Things and Digital Assets, Dr Tanja Rueckert explain the announcement, the thinking behind it, and how it will benefit customers. She very graciously agreed to come on the show. Enjoy :)
