Enterprise Resource Planning is a type of software that shares information between different functions in real-time. The roots can be traced back to the 1960s when manufacturers developed Material Requirements Planning software, or MRP, to calculate the components to order for a given production plan. By 1990, the needs of adjacent departments, such as finance, human resources and distribution, had been added. Information was both shared between departments in real-time and enriched with logic to replace repetitive tasks. Gartner coined the term Enterprise Resource Planning for this new class of application. Since then, enterprise applications have continued to extend information sharing, both inside and outside of the corporation, and enriched it with ever more sophisticated logic, such as artificial intelligence. Furthermore, enterprise architectures have moved from monolithic on-premise applications to ever more granular components in the cloud that each company can combine differently to meet their unique needs. While these components go by many different names, the term ERP is often used to describe the composite solution that forms the backbone of an enterprise's business processes. In April, the digital twin of the Stavå bridge in Norway sounded an alarm from the cloud that reached the offices of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA). They were able to immediately divert traffic and avoid any injuries. The NPRA Director of Technology, Trond Michael Andersen, explains how IoT sensors not only increase safety but also help reduce the costs of repairing or replacing the country's 5,800 bridges. It all started when Stephen Jamieson's 7-year old daughter Olive asked her father to do something against plastic waste in the sea. Stephen, Head of SAP Leonardo UK and Ireland, took on the challenge. The idea: using SAP tools and technology to make the world a cleaner place. With the London Design Thinking Academy, he initiated the Plastics Challenge, a 3-day design sprint. One outcome is the Plastics Cloud, a platform powered by SAP Leonardo Analytics capabilities, compiling and processing information, that can be used to forecast trends in plastics purchasing and recycling and enable new services. Two of them are the Awards for Change app and the Recylemate app. And the data collected by the Plastics Cloud are the ideal foundation to drive more sustainable solutions, towards significantly reducing our plastics foodprint.

The historical Slowenian town in a scenic bend of the River Krka is going through a digital revolution. To better use precious natural resources and enhance live quality and prosperity, the city is implementing a full smart city infrastructure. Together with SAP and partner Telekom Slovenia, Novo mesto installed sensors all over the city to gather data on all aspects of the environment from water usage and air pollution to the impact of light pollution caused by artificial light which alters natural conditions. The data are collected with SAP Leonardo and analyzed with SAP Analytics, all IoT platforms run on the SAP Cloud Platform. The data are used by the municipal government to make operational decisions and by citizens using mobile apps, for example, to find available parking spaces. “We realize that managing city resources is not just a job for the government. Reduce processing times for complex cross-company invoices from three days to 20 minutes? It's possible with a new tool that was developed by Nicolas Neumann, finalist in the Hasso Plattner Founders' Award competition and part of SAP's “Autism at Work” program. Until now, the creation of complex cross-company invoices could take several days. The payables had to be processed manually and up to 20,000 line items taken into account. Nicolas, an accounts payable analyst at SAP, felt overwhelmed by the “tons” of material he had to process manually. At the same time, he identified a method that could automate the posting of complex cross-company invoices and began working on a solution. The tool simplifies accounting processes by structuring invoices automatically and transferring them directly to the ERP system.
“SAP for Me” is the name of a new tool for customers that gives them everything they want to know about their product portfolio, plus added services to help them become more productive. The tool is one of eight finalists for the 2019 Hasso Plattner Founders' Award.
Teams across SAP have developed a bot that automatically creates employment offer letters. The solution, which relies on robotic process automation, ensures potential employees get their employment offers faster and frees up HR employees to deal with higher-level tasks.
