Boo! Welcome to the spookiest bunch of episodes about behavior analysis that you ever did see. On the twenty- ninth episode of ATFT, one of my good friends, lover of movies Taylor Donaldson joins me in discussing 1999 in film! This episode is explicit and contains spoilers for a few 1999 films. 1999 is often regarded as one of the greatest years in cinema. There's even a book written by Brian Raftery titled: Best. Movie. Year. Ever: How 1999 Blew Up the Big Screen. NPR's Scott Detrow describes 1999 to Raftery in a short conversation, as a year in which "old masters like Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick were still putting out provocative work, while new masters like David Fincher and Paul Thomas Anderson were pushing the boundaries of narrative and cinematic form." As Taylor describes in the beginning of the episode, it was a very "eclectic" year for cinema. Keanu Reeves took the red pill and learned "there is no spoon", John Cusack along with several others entered the mind of John Malkovich, Angelina Jolie screamed "Where's Jamie?", Brad Pitt and Edward Norton welcomed us to their fight club and Heath Ledger stole all of our hearts. 1999 was certainly an innovative, stand- alone, eclectic year in cinema. This is Taylor's fourth time on ATFT but first appearance on the wide release! Taylor has been one of my closest friends for four years now and quickly became my favorite person to talk film with. Since this is a special episode, I knew I had to bring on a very special guest and Taylor instantly came to mind. This episode was recorded on September 5, 2024. In this episode, Taylor and I discuss the films of 1999 with a little help from each and every past wide release guest on ATFT. Since this was, again, a special episode, I wanted to include all the past guests so I asked each of them their favorite film from 1999. After Taylor share our top five favorite films of the year, we go through the list of films chosen by the ATFT guest community. Taylor also shares some hot takes, the most significant probably being The Virgin Suicides is the best film by a Coppola, why she is rooting for Matt Damon's Tom Ripley in The Talented Mr. Ripley, and the hits and many misses of the 2000 Academy Awards. All this and more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

Aidan Raftery hasn't had formal training in winemaking but it seems wine has always featured somehow in some way in his life, a life that now happens to be making the stuff in a village somewhere in the Republic of Georgia. Born in the UK, he arrived in Aotearoa with his family as a young chap. Serendipity would have it that the family home was perched just around the corner from some wine writer, Master of Wine guy called Bob Campbell. With a curiosity of industrial proportions, Aidan took any opportunity to learn about wine from the neighbour, and his folks and to be honest, anyone who would engage in wine chats. Fast forward a few years and a need to leave our small island in the pursuit of more adventure and we follow Aidan's journey to Melbourne where he established one of the first natural wine bars in the city and began to get his hands truly dirty with grape stain. It was here he gave winemaking a crack and fell even further into his own personal very deep wine cave. Aidan's vim and vigour for learning, for making, for tasting and trying, for sharing and for caring about wine is bloody infectious. It's also given him something of an enviable intrepid urge to follow his nose when it comes to wine adventures and nowhere says wine adventure more than Georgia, where the wine making history is deep, rich and UNESCO protected. If you think amphora and clay eggs are a new thing, you're about 6000 years out of touch. It's in this unexpected but fascinating part of the world that Aidan has really put down his winemaking roots. Chatting with this guy and drinking his wine is like being teleported to an utterly unknown terra firma. Grape varieties we've never heard of, inflictions on words that felt unfamiliar and hard to super pronounce all wrapped up in cultural traditions from a whole other time. This is one special chat with one special chap. In s3e54, Platemark host Ann Shafer talks with Andrew Raftery, artist, professor, scholar, and wallpaper designer. Andrew works in several modes, most notably in engraving. The through line in the work is domesticity. An early print featured a young man suit shopping. Next was a portfolio of engravings detailing rooms during a real estate open house. Then engravings representing each month in the life of a garden were transferred to twelve dinnerplates and sold as a set. His latest show included watercolors depicting historical interior rooms that feature French and Chinese wallpapers. He also produces letterpress wallpapers himself. Ann and Andrew talk about how engraving shows itself completely—there is no secret to how it is made, the inscrutability of Vermeer's paintings, the importance of understanding the history of prints, how the transfer process works with ceramic dinnerware, how French and Chinese wallpapers were made (some were hand painted!), and hatboxes. Images of Andrew's art are by Erik Gould; Andrew's headshot is by Ned Lochaya. Andrew is represented by Mary Ryan Gallery. Andrew Raftery (American, born 1962). Human Resources, 1990s. Welcome to The B-Side from The Film Stage. Here we usually talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today, we talk to a great film writer about a great film sub-genre! Brian Raftery! Vietnam War Movie B-Sides! Brian (author of the wonderful Best. Movie. Year. Ever. How 1999 Blew Up the Big Screen) released a wonderful podcast mini-series for The Ringer called Do We Get to Win This Time? this past summer. It examines the evolution of the American Vietnam War movie through the decades. Raftery speaks with everybody for this thing, from Oliver Stone to Dale Dye. Our B-Sides today are: Hearts and Minds, The Little Girl of Hanoi, and Hamburger Hill. We cover plenty more, dissecting movies made by both American and Vietnamese filmmakers. From when we first became aware of Vietnam as a war, to our favorite Vietnam war films, to highlighting additional underrated B-Sides in this sub-genre.
