Happy New Year from Highlawn Baptist Church! Every year, on the first Sunday, Highlawn reviews the Covenant of the church as a congregation. This is not done as a loyalty pledge, or some other nonsense, this is done to remind us of who we are, why we exist, more importantly Who God is, and what is our mission for God. The podcast today starts right after the Covenant was read. Today, Pastor Jason expands on what a church is, the mission, the purpose, and what components are necessary in order to call a group of people - a church. SCRIPTURES: Hebrews 11:1-2 and Luke 2:22-40.SHOW NOTES: We are familiar with many of the details and characters found in Luke 2 – Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and angels. Yet later in the chapter, we are introduced to two people, a man and a woman, who exhibit strong qualities of trust, confidence, and hope in the Lord of Israel. These two had lived their lives in an admirable and commendable fashion. There's much we can learn from Simeon and Anna. Simeon is described as righteous and devout, and his name means one who hears and obeys. Anna, a prophetess and widow, has lived at the temple for many decades where she worships night and day in fasting and prayer. Each of them has been waiting for the consolation of Israel – the coming of the Lord's Messiah. When Mary and Joseph bring their infant son to the temple in Jerusalem, Simeon and Anna respond with words of blessing to God and thanksgiving for the arrival of the promised Messiah. From the Eagle Community Church of Christ in Mont Belvieu, TX. John Gunter talks about Hebrews 4:14-16 where we read how Jesus was also tempted, and because of his temptation, he can empathize with us as we are tempted. Sometimes it may not feel like Jesus struggled in life like we do. Many people feel so down about their sins, they can feel like isolated failures. This should not be the case. Scripture talks about how we all sin and fall short of what God desires for us. However, scripture tells us this does not put an end to us. Jesus knows what it is like to live life on earth and to be tempted. Hopefully, this sermon helps our view of who God is and how he sees us. ----------Scriptures: Hebrews 4:14-16 --------------------YouTube video of this sermon: https://youtu.be/K5-_UBPrkAs --------------------Church Website: https://www.eaglechurchofchrist.com --------------------Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/eaglecommunitychurchofchrist ----------

God's structure + God's power = Your deliverance! There is no way to keep God away from the structure He puts into place. Noah used his faith to build the ark (structure) that saved his family. What you build by faith will seem strange for your region, but God will provide the things you need. You must act on the Word from God regardless of what you see. Your act of faith will set you up for the right relationship with God. God is illuminating you with His presence and transforming you into a NEW YOU! Why did God ask Noah - a man with no training and no experience - to build an ark? Because Noah was a man who worshipped God and walked with God; Noah focused on being with God first which prepared him for the work God asked him to do. In this message, we discover how Noah's faith was at work throughout his life and how to know if faith is at work in your life. Scriptures: Hebrews 11:7; Genesis 6:5-14; Matthew 24:36-44
If there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that work can be stressful. Between annoying people, being overworked and underpaid, and feeling frustrated when we have to repeat ourselves ("...per the below..."), it can feel like we're losing more than we're winning. But what if we worked unto God and not man? How would that small shift in perspective change our relationship with our work?
