Today, I'm talking to Andy Braren.-Andy currently works at Red Hat as a Senior Interaction Designer. Similar to Catherine from our last episode, Andy also graduated from Tufts! And don't be surprised if our next episode guest is also a Tufts grad!-I was extremely excited about this conversation because Andy is a prolific maker, a term describing one who likes to build to solve problems. And it surely did not disappoint. Just to note a few of his creations, Andy created an assistive tech device company in high school, started a web development consultancy, started the Tufts MAKE club, and created multiple applications at Tufts. In short, the conversation was a total blast. And if you want to start building but don't know where to start, this episode is perfect for you. So, without further ado, here was my conversation with Andy Braren.===Highlights⭐ How did you develop your maker spirit?⭐ Andy's philosophy of making⭐ Importance of communication in design⭐ Andy's favorite Steve Jobs quote⭐ Difference between design in college vs “real-world”===Links

Adelaide local, Devin Mancuso (now based in California) has worked for Google for almost 4 years, initially as a Senior Interaction Designer and now in Design Strategy, Platforms and Ecosystems. I had a really interesting chat with him about so many different topics. We discussed how he got into the design space, recounting the exact moment he really fell in love with it (while studying computer science and business management). As well as the struggles of teaching himself UX at a time when there really wasn't a lot of information available. We talked about the importance of having a great user experience in apps, how people made decisions before designers were really a thing, and what human-centred design means to him. We also dive into how design strategy became something he wanted to pursue, and where he got a chance to do this at Google initially. He really paints a picture of the energy that people in Silicon Valley feel, and how exhausting it can sometimes be! Showing the importance of aligning yourself with what you want to do and who you want to be. This is a great chat to check out for anyone working or with an interest in the design space. Enjoy!

Designing for dynamic web applications and mobile devices poses a new set of challenges. Web designers are increasingly being asked to apply their skills to where the page model no longer applies. We need new ways of exploring the user experience and communicating behaviours involving sub-page changes and movement. Enter rapid prototyping. Widely acclaimed as one of the best ways to create great user experiences, it isn’t without its own pitfalls. This session will discuss the pros and cons of different prototyping techniques, and introduce a new technique called "screenflows" that focuses on visualising the user experience. Discover how to combine the best of paper prototyping, wireframes and HTML prototyping into one simple and effective prototyping technique. Learn how using this method can dramatically decrease the need for documentation, while increasing the speed and agility of the development process.
