Hi there, I'm Judy Croon. Welcome to another Episode of Laugh Long and Prosper, shelf help with a dash of humour. I believe that humour is one of our best coping mechanisms, especially when we are facing stress. Today I am chatting with One Funny Lady Deborah Kimmett She is a regular on CBC's Winnipeg Comedy Festival, LOL and is an accomplished author of four books, Reality is Overrated and That Which Doesn't Kill You Makes You Funnier, and Out Running Crazy and her new book Window-shopping for God She was nominated twice for the National Magazine Award for Humour. As well, she has been shortlisted for the Governor-General Award for her play Miracle Mother in 1984. She has written 52 episodes of TV on Steve Smith's Go Girl. Her lead in the movie, Keep Coming Back debuted at the Palm Springs Film Festival, and Whistler Film Festival garnered a best actress nomination for ACTRA. She has appeared on Canadian gems like Frankie Drake, Tall Boyz, and Gayle Pyle. Now these are all amazing accolades but I suspect this next credit is one of the things that Deborah is most proud of and that's her Secret Santa Sock Fund. Deborah's Secret Santa Sock Fund raised over $6200 that could be spent on wool and thermal socks for those less fortunate. Along with hundreds of pairs of socks, she also handed out mylar sleeping bags, shackets, jackets, hats and mitts and more cash this year. The beneficiaries are 519 Community Centre, Integrated Health in Kingston, Men's Shelter, Sistering, in Toronto Morningstar Mission, Napanee, Bancroft Centre, Greenwood Coalition, and Port Hope. We also talked about Deborah's online writing courses which really fill up in January. If you would like more information about Deborah you can reach out to her at deborah@kimmett.ca or her website http://www.Kimmett.ca

Jennifer Crawford is a gender creative queer who I could happily gush about for the entirety of this episode. We first met cooking for an organization called Sistering in Toronto, which does critical work with women and trans people who are predominantly street entrenched and fleeing violence. You'll hear that story upfront. (I promise, it's a warm one.) Jennifer is also the first queer winner of MasterChef Canada, and—wait for it—a professional wrestler who goes under the moniker of Moon Miss. BOTH of which make it super easy for us to talk about the inherent multi-dimensionality that comes with being a person (period), and that leads us right into talking about the trauma that first causes any of us to mask, and the secondary trauma that comes from the pain of masking. It's a lot of uncovering. "There's a lot of peace in learning how your mind works and giving yourself that permission slip to treat the stakes as high as they are. When I think about authenticity, it's not something I think about a lot in terms of like, ‘Oh, am I being authentic?' I think about the stakes being so high—and they are for so many. It's not just a thing we do for clout online. It is a thing we do to survive, and connect with other people, so that we can thrive together.” - Jennifer Crawford Take that in. And get ready to feel a whole lot of permission. (*Check the list of tools below for the full scope.) WORKS- Winner of MasterChef Canada (Check their recipes at jenniferecrawford.com)- Professional wrestler, under the name Moon Miss- Columnist and author of the platform, “My Queer Kitchen" on Daily Xtra- Columnist for SaltWire Tools You'll Get from This Episode:- Reminders that free you from having to mask who you are- Truths that come from permission-granting lived-experience stories - How sobriety can help us discover more nuance about ourselves- Insight into the beauty and gift that comes with noticing yourself - Reflections that help us depart from codependent patterns- Lived lessons on finding the balance between humility and self-abandonment- Truths that show you're always worthy of nurturing- Wisdom that creates doorways into small degrees of change (rather than the pressure to 180)- Connection and truths revealed about lone-wolfing life and how to break away from the damage of this trauma response- Ideas that free you from the trappings of niching down your life LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: BETTER is recorded on the unceded and ancestral territory of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples, the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, and has been stewarded by them since time immemorial. To fight off the enemy's fiery darts, we need to utilize our heaven-sent weapons. In this series, I'm sharing what I believe to be God-inspired weapons to help us grow in our faith and walk in victory. In today's episode we explore the importance of sistering, not only as an architectural term, but as a powerful tool. While the Bible has numerous examples of the importance of community, today we look to Jesus' mother, Mary. In Luke 1:39 we read that after Mary received the news she was pregnant with The Messiah, "...she got ready and hurried to the hill country of Judea to stay with her cousin Elizabeth." Tune in today to learn the 3 ways that Elizabeth and Mary's relationship models for us the importance of sisters and how we can implement these same characteristics in our own heaven-sent-sister-circles. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/frannie-foltz/support
We get right back into it and begin with post beam structural engineering, very cool talk. We discuss fixed tie offs for commercial and residential projects and how they are designed and built. Larry and Brian discuss rigging, spreader bars and lifting beams leading into the 108 max length of engineered 2 Ply trusses and that brings the conversation to mechanically graded lumber. From there we get into ICF structure, concrete roof slabs, 25mm rebar for structure and raft slabs. There is such a thing as The National Farm Code. How would a couple of engineers build a shed? We get right into it and that takes us to Fun Fences and how to build a better fence and from there we get into20 foot tall candy cane posts at Wonderland and even a structural Santa. We get into a lot of client custom requests and how engineering is always the last detail to be considered, such as adding all of this glass in a tall wall overlooking the backyard, such a recipe for issues. We get discussing modifying existing engineered details to suit new ideas, such as adding solar panels to an older roof system. Finally!! We get down to the word Sistering and why things are not called Brothering. The guys tell us about a situation where a client had removed key structure steel posts and welding a part of a truck frame to the existing I beam, crazy what some people will do. The engineers even bring up helical piles and working with @TechnometalposthdWe look to close out this great second half of the show talking about not needing engineers and you can build a house off of building code rules and regulations. We wouldn’t, we will always have an engineer as part of the scope of work. We leave things with one more book reference, The Canadian Foundation Manual for all of your concrete requirements.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You Larry and Brian so much for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about engineering, working with contractors and clients. Check out Larry and Brian @waddell_engineering and www.waddelleng.comThank you to Mark from @skyluxeroofing for letting us record the show in his breakroom and welcome him and his guys always walking through the recording. Sisterhood. What does that mean? Biological sisters? Sisters by marriage? In today’s episode we conclude our celebration of Womanhood and Motherhood by discussing Sisterhood. It means so much more than just a family relationship. It means supporting, strengthening, building, and “lifting” the women around us. We need each other. We need the gifts, talents, similarities, and differences each one of us possesses. Listen in to a great episode about embracing the Sisterhood that comes with being women and mothers. In the kitchen at Sistering, they're cooking up a storm on a tight budget and they've been doing it for almost 40 years. The cooks at this drop-in and shelter never know how many mouths they'll have to feed. Homelessness in Toronto is a real crisis - and things are getting worse. Without enough affordable housing, people are forced to sleep outside or in overcrowded shelters. Sistering is struggling to provide assistance and dignity to women in cruel circumstances but, as you'll hear, the facility faces its own challenges.

We talk about how the shifts are manifesting in her life, in her own healing, soul care and practice. Hali speaks with grace about her past relationship with religion and spirituality and her recent surprising call to return to church, how she has honoured that shift in herself, alongside the other ch-ch-changes in her life. She talks about the mystic Hildegard of Bingen, who she describes as an edge walker, and how that relationship has deepened her own sacred self care practice. At this time when many of us turn to assess their yearly charitable giving, we wanted to remind you of the many women who may be challenged with meeting their basic self care needs. For instance, having the basic supplies for their menstrual cycles, is an extra hardship for women who are homeless or living with limited incomes.
