A special episode! Anna chats with author Kemper Donovan about his new crime novel THE BUSY BODY, the first in the Ghostwriter series. A contemporary murder mystery told in the spirit of the Golden Age by the host of the All About Agatha podcast, THE BUSY BODY has been described as Veep meets Agatha Christie and a 'witty and highly entertaining mystery' (Sophie Hannah). Dorothy Gibson, failed presidential candidate aka That Woman, invites her ghostwriter to Maine to pen her memoir, but the dream assignment comes unstuck when a woman is murdered next door. We loved this one and can't wait for the next in the series, LOOSE LIPS! Kemper recommends the work of Agatha Christie and Tana French and the podcasts The Swinging Christies and Shedunnit. We discuss chapters 15-27 of Agatha Christie's notorious serial murder story, 'The ABC Murders'. A fourth murder has taken place, but breaks the pattern of alliteration. Is the killer getting sloppy? It certainly seems so, as Alexander Bonaparte Cust totters around right under the Legion's nose. As their faith in Poirot wavers as much as their reliance on him grows, the threat of impending murders lingers. How does one catch a serial killer whose calling card is so distinct but indecipherable? We also chat with Sophie Hannah about writing Poirot, and the importance of sidekicks and their voice of wisdom in a Christie novel. Which friend of the Belgian really loves him the most? Thank you to Sophie Hannah for providing a review copy of her mystery musical 'The Mystery of Mr. E', and Harper Collins for providing copies of 'Silent Night'.

Smack bang in the middle of our list is a novel that captured my heart when I first read it for its fun take on a distinguished no-introductions-needed character, in eighth place the always lovely Sophie Hannah's Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot's Silent Night, which we covered on the show quite late in our year. Silent Night is a new and ambitious look into the life and times of Poirot and is the fifth in a series of revival novels which we sought out after tackling Anthony Horowitz's acclaimed Moriarty. We've had a chance this year to just scratch the surface of new age revisitations of classic characters and I'm looking forward to diving into more of those next year.

Retaining the title of the “Queen of Crime” to this day, Agatha Christie is the best-selling novelist of all time. Across 66 novels, 14 short-story collections, and 20 stage plays, she depicted the evil lurking in the hearts of ordinary people. But how did this homeschooled daughter of a privileged English family learn so much about poisons, psychopaths and murder? What in her personal life informed such a suspicious view of ordinary people? And how did she trigger a real-life mystery in 1926 that saw the whole country turn amateur detective? This is a Short History Of Agatha Christie. Written by Jo Furniss. With thanks to best-selling crime writer Sophie Hannah. New episodes of Short History Of will be back in the new year. We discuss chapters 29-38 of Sophie Hannah's latest Hercule Poirot continuation novel, 'Silent Night'. Catchpool and Poirot are left with a hard task, the killing blow on Frelly itself. Stakeouts, emotional turmoil, and the unveiling of the final clues. A fun, quirky mystery in the world of Poirot draws to a close, but our protagonists cannot agree on their solution. How do the final dominoes fall, as the house threatens to fall into the sea? We want to hear from you for Review Season! Tell us your favourite trends in the crime fiction you read this year, and your favourite stories, by getting in touch on the show page.
We discuss chapters 13-28 of Sophie Hannah's latest Hercule Poirot continuation novel, 'Silent Night'. Edward Catchpool and Hercule Poirot find themselves the victim of a terrible poisoning, and will it lead them to the killer of Stanley Niven? Probably not, because Edward's mother confesses immediately, simply to tell the duo how good of an idea it was getting Poirot into hospital so he'd be closer to the case. I'm sure other things happen in this stretch of chapters, but I'm still very shaken by this particular sequence. With laughter, mostly. That's right - Poirot goes to visit the nurses from the hospital, meets Mr. Hurt-His-Head from Arthur's notes, and Arthur is killed in a dramatic break-in. We're also joined by Lindy Cameron, National Co-Convenor of Sisters in Crime Australia, and founder of Clan Destine Press, to talk about the 30th anniversary of the Scarlet Stiletto Awards. We want to hear from you for Review Season! Tell us your favourite trends in the crime fiction you read this year, and your favourite stories, by getting in touch on the show page.
We discuss chapters 1-12 of Sophie Hannah's latest Hercule Poirot continuation novel, 'Silent Night'. Officially avoiding our mystery-taxes for the year, we meet Poirot and his friend Edward Catchpool as they settle down for a quiet Christmas together. Unfortunately for them both, a mysterious woman arrives with a case, and it's straight out of Edward's nightmares. As his mother insists they travel to a dilapidated old house, Poirot's interest is piqued by the insinuation that the two men at the core of this supposed mystery are both jolly fellows without an enemy in the world. How could such men befall terrible fates? We want to hear from you for Review Season! Tell us your favourite trends in the crime fiction you read this year, and your favourite stories, by getting in touch on the show page.

EPISODE 1808: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to Sophie Hannah, author of HERCULE POIROT'S SILENT NIGHT, about how to recreate the World's Greatest Detective.Sophie Hannah is a Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling writer of crime fiction, published in forty-nine languages and fifty-one territories. Her next Poirot novel will be published in October 2023. The crime writer Agatha Christie remains the best-selling novelist of all time even though her death was almost 50 years ago. Her fictional detective Hercule Poirot has attained legendary status, so for a modern novelist to breathe new life into the character is a considerable challenge. However, the English psychological crime author Sophie Hannah has been doing just that. In 2014 she wrote her first novel using Poirot as the central character and we follow her in 2018 as she prepares her third Poirot novel for publication, entitled The Mystery of Three Quarters. Felicity Finch next catches up with Sophie as her fifth Poirot novel, Hercule Poirot's Silent Night, is due to be published.
Josh and Charlotte ]have finally ventured into the Poirot extended universe! They have a LOT to say about Sophie Hannah's first entry into the new Hercule Poirot series. Listen to their spirited geek out now!
How different is the work of a real-life private investigator to the work of Hercule Poirot? In this episode, host Rebecca Thandi Norman interviews her sister (!) Ashley Norman, who is a former private investigator. They discuss how Poirot's work is similar to her own, whether there are really "famous" detectives, and the plot of The A.B.C. Murders. In this episode I welcome the incredibly creative Sophie Hannah. Sophie is a content creator who is loved for her individual style and inspiring hair, makeup and fashion looks which are always full of colour, flair and individuality.Sophie has just written a book called Beauty, Hair, Style - The New No Rules Beauty Bible and I absolutely love the premise of the book which is basically to express yourself however you want to....in fact the more daring and flamboyant the better. During the episode we chat about how Sophie got into this world and taught herself how to create technically brilliant looks without any training. We also have a great discussion about never being too old to express yourself, how to maintain good mental health, positive thinking and the good and bad sides of social media and the beauty industry. Sophie also has some wonderful product recommendations and skincare tips.Sophie Hannah is so talented yet down to Earth and I absolutely loved getting to know her.

Sophie Hannah and husband Robin bond with Olivia and Alex over their love of interior design, festivals and reveal how they first met...
Sophie Hannah and Viv Groskop join Harriett Gilbert to talk about books they love. Sophie, an Agatha Christie expert and superfan, recommends The Rose and the Yew Tree, a book – misleadingly billed as a romance, she says – that Christie wrote under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. She claims it can rival any detective novel for suspense and intrigue. Will Harriett and Viv agree? Harriett champions Dame Eileen Atkin's recent memoir Will She Do? which charts the first 30 years of the actor's life, including her time as a child soubrette, performing in working men's clubs as ‘Baby Eileen'. It wasn't easy recording my first episode without Catherine, but fortunately I had a friend to help me: Sophie Hannah, who duked out the rankings with me as my guest co-host. And what a time we had discussing this extremely flawed, though extremely fascinating late-career Christie thriller....
The ladies discuss freezing their eggs and whether they would consider having a child alone. Women are constantly reminded that their biological clock is ticking, putting them under pressure to find a partner and have a baby as young as possible, but are there other options? Is the complex and expensive process of freezing eggs or embryos a luxury for the rich, or something that all women should proactively consider? What is the best age to freeze your eggs and how do you talk to a partner about the decision? Is egg freezing an insurance policy against fertility challenges in later life or does it play on women's insecurities and offer them false hope? And is the decision to parent solo selfish or do some single parent families do better than traditional nuclear families? In this episode, Monah, Nushy Rose, and Sophie Hannah explore the stigmas attached to women's fertility, the responsibilities involved in becoming a parent, and the choice to delay having children until later in life.--------------------------------------- FOLLOW THE CONVERSATION #EthnicallySpeakingInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/unitedmelanincoYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/UnitedMelaninGroupTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8H5Jx9b/Twitter: https://instagram.com/unitedmelanincoFacebook: https://facebook.com/unitedmelanincoLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/unitedmelaninco/Get in touch with us: ethnicallyspeaking@unitedmelaningroup.com---------------------------------------- LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE https://www.refinery29.com/en-gb/2020/11/10167327/egg-freezing-uk-cost(Article – Real Talk, Should You Actually Freeze Your Eggs? – Vicky Spratt for Refinery 29)https://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/article/egg-freezing-guide(Article – Everything you need to know about egg freezing to make an empowered decision – Lottie Winter for Glamour)https://www.cosmopolitan.com/health-fitness/a36718692/egg-freezing-tips-cost-faqs/(Article – The No-Bullsh*t, Not-Scary, Actually Helpful Guide to Egg Freezing – Elizabeth Kiefer for Cosmopolitan)https://theconversation.com/six-things-you-should-know-if-you-are-considering-freezing-your-eggs-94039(Article – Six things you should know if you are considering freezing your eggs Kylie Baldwin for The Conversation)https://www.thecut.com/2016/06/best-age-to-freeze-your-eggs.html(Article – Surprisingly, this is the best age to freeze your eggs – Susan Rinkunas for The Cut)https://www.technologyreview.com/2019/08/14/133377/mothers-journey-egg-freezing-parenthood/(Article – Don't count on having kids if you freeze your eggs – Bonnie Rochman for MIT Technology Review)https://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/article/630e250e-3b65-4e02-a3ec-d562cd8b7868(Article – Should I freeze my eggs for my 30th birthday? – Catriona White for BBC)https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/jun/23/going-it-alone-why-chose-single-motherhood(Article – Going it alone: why I chose single motherhood – Emma Brockes for The Guardian)https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/support-and-services/advice-for-single-parents/(Article – Advice for single parents – NHS)https://graziadaily.co.uk/life/real-life/sperm-donor-baby-solo-parent/(Article – Things you only know if you've chosen to have a baby alone – Genevieve Roberts for Grazia)https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/23/opinion/sunday/single-at-38-have-that-baby.html(Article – Single at 38? The ladies discuss whether women are less happy than they used to be because of unrealistic expectations about life created by social media. Women already feel pressured to “have it all”, but does the content on social media make us feel like we're not doing enough or falling behind those who appear to be living their best life? How do we define happiness and what do we really need to be happy? Is it possible to be happy all the time and would quitting or taking a break from social media help achieve this? Are the relationships we have on social media authentic or does liking, following, and comparing ourselves to the curated and filtered view of other people's lives fuel our own unhappiness? In this episode, Monah, Nushy Rose, and Sophie Hannah explore our complicated relationship with social media and look at how we can all take charge of our own future happiness.--------------------------------------- FOLLOW THE CONVERSATION #EthnicallySpeakingInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/unitedmelanincoYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/UnitedMelaninGroupTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8H5Jx9b/Twitter: https://instagram.com/unitedmelanincoFacebook: https://facebook.com/unitedmelanincoLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/unitedmelaninco/Get in touch with us: ethnicallyspeaking@unitedmelaningroup.com---------------------------------------- LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE https://www.inquirer.com/philly/health/we-arent-as-happy-as-we-used-to-be-heres-what-could-help-20180122.html(Article – We aren't as happy as we used to be. The ladies debate whether how you lose your virginity affects your attitude towards sex and your future sexual encounters. Society makes us believe the first time we have sex is a monumental moment adding to the pressure, nerves, and fear that already surround the experience, but is the concept of virginity outdated? What changes physically, emotionally, and mentally after you have sex for the first time? Do religions and cultures unfairly link women's identities or value to their sexual activity? Does it matter how old you are when you become sexually active and do your views on intimacy, casual sex, and celibacy change with age? In this episode, Monah, Nushy Rose, and Sophie Hannah delve deep into what shapes individual perspectives on sex, the reason men are congratulated for losing their virginity while women are shamed, and why the female orgasm and women's pleasure is rarely prioritised in the bedroom.--------------------------------------- FOLLOW THE CONVERSATION #EthnicallySpeakingInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/unitedmelanincoYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/UnitedMelaninGroupTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8H5Jx9b/Twitter: https://instagram.com/unitedmelanincoFacebook: https://facebook.com/unitedmelanincoLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/unitedmelaninco/Get in touch with us: ethnicallyspeaking@unitedmelaningroup.com---------------------------------------- LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODEhttps://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2013/01/study-how-we-lose-our-virginity-shapes-our-entire-sexual-life/272596/(Article – Study: How we lose our virginity shapes our entire sexual life – Lindsay Abrams for The Atlantic)https://www.her.ie/life/these-are-the-side-effects-of-losing-your-virginity-later-in-life-309078(Article – The age at which you lose your virginity can have a huge impact on your sexual enjoyment – Cassie Delaney for Her)https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/01/130128104732.htm(Article – 'First time' may predict lifelong sexual satisfaction – University of Tennessee at Knoxville via Science Daily)https://www.theguardian.com/science/2016/apr/18/genes-influence-the-age-at-which-you-lose-your-virginity-first-sex-dna(Article – Genes influence the age at which you lose your virginity, study shows – Ian Sample for The Guardian)https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2018/10/sexual-partners-and-marital-happiness/573493/(Article – Fewer sex partners means a happier marriage – Olga Khazan for The Atlantic)https://www.refinery29.com/en-gb/2019/01/221739/losing-your-virginity-stories(Article – Women Are Losing Their Virginity Before They're Ready. Welcome to series 4, episode 7 of In Suspense - a podcast and vodcast for fans and writers of crime fiction. Our topic today is How to be a Literary Power House. We're joined by the hugely successful Sophie Hannah, who in addition to sharing her experiences and advice, also gives up two exclusives!
Monah, Nushy Rose, and Sophie Hannah discuss female friendships and why some women find it hard to make friends with other women or, in some cases, pride themselves on being one of the boys. For centuries society has pitted women against one another, causing them to see each other as competition in a narrative that some say was created by men. Are some women projecting their own insecurities onto other females? Are women able to have deeper friendships than men because they're more vulnerable with each other? Would you trust your partner around a woman who only has male friends? In this episode, the ladies explore the beauty of female friendships, how they change with age, why they need just as much maintenance as romantic relationships, and how to deal with conflict to repair broken friendships. How important are your gal pals?
