Talk about leveraging constraints, Michael Bell runs Dallas Half Acre Farm without running water or electricity, with a full-time job, on about half an acre. On this week's podcast, we talk about how he makes it all work. We discuss why almost all his crops are grown under cover, and how he makes that work with the intense summer heat in Texas. We also talk about why he harvests and delivers produce almost every day of the week, and how that works with his job as a teacher. We also discuss some of the difficulties of farming in a neighborhood where the authorities don't always understand agriculture, and how Michael has worked with local officials to keep growing. His modified CSA is a great model for those looking to get a lot out of a small space or start farming in an urban/suburban area. Michael is also a big advocate for urban farming- hear his advice for aspiring urban farmers, and how he helps them get started. Today we're delighted to be joined by Anthony Lark who is the Executive Director of Shinta Mani Hotels. Shinta Mani Hotels aim to deliver holidays that change lives for their guests and in the surrounding communities alike. Each of the hotels are designed by co-owner Bill Bensley whom Architectural Digest calls “a pioneer in sustainable hotel design” and each of their small properties reflects its natural and cultural environment, providing heartfelt hospitality that supports the people, animals and ecosystems of Cambodia through the Shinta Mani Foundation. With an illustrious career which includes becoming the general manager for Adrian Zecha's first Aman resort, Amanpuri, in Phuket, Anthony Lark is more than a hotelier. He has vast and impressive experience throughout Asia and today also oversees the Shinta Mani Foundation, which aids the less fortunate in Cambodian communities where the eco-conscious Shinta Mani Hotels are located. As Anthony pointed out to me, “Our footprint should be small; our sense of community should be huge”. Today we have the lovely Jessica Murray, Director of Cooper and Blake Architecture. Jessica specialises in designing high-value sustainable homes on smaller footprints. Jessica combines healthy home practices, passive design principles and the philosophy of wabi-sabi to create spaces that prioritise quality over quantity. Our mental well-being and physical health are incredibly influenced by the design of our homes. Having a home connected to the environment, that incorporates high quality and low toxicity materials and considers aspect and access to sunlight impact the quality of our lives and the way we function day to day. Jessica talks us through how orientation, airflow and intentionality can help create a home that optimises health and wellbeing. Jessica talks us through the philosophies of her practice, and how she takes clients on a journey from the pre-design stage. She explains the Project Roadmap offering from Cooper and Blake that is aimed at providing advice and guidance on creating a more sustainable project before you even reach the design phase. Jessica believes that careful consideration of both the motivation and expectations of a client ensures the success of a project and allows informed decisions to be made early on. This ensures sustainability is embedded in the project, rather than being expensively retrofitted at the end. There is a dance that homes provide and we discuss how worthwhile it is to interrogate our use and intentions for spaces to ensure they meet our needs and allow us to live our lives in the way we desire. Jessica also talks us through the benefits of a smaller footprint, considering both sustainability and liveability. A smaller footprint not only reduces material costs but allows for larger garden spaces, impacting water permeability, cooling the site overall and allowing for even more connection with the natural environment. We also discuss the evolution of homes and the concept that what we build now will outlive us. This brings a whole new meaning to the concept of sustainability and quality! Jessica reminds us that sustainability can be added on early, and if it is, can lead to much better outcomes for both the home and the client's health and well-being. She really smashes through the perception that being sustainable is expensive, complicated and a luxury add-on. Packing precision into a small footprint. Headquartered near Barcelona, in Catalonia, Vilardell specialises in the production of precision parts with a high added value and comprises two divisions, the Medical Division and the Industrial Division. At the Industrial Division, Jordi Roy Torras, The Manager of the Industrial Division says Vilardell has specialised in the production of highly complex parts for some time. He says “This is our core competence. Something we have developed year after year and part by part.” “We employ 165 staff and they are very important to us,” almost every day, we are faced with new challenges. Even with the best machines, we wouldn’t be able to tackle these challenges, if we didn’t have such a strong team! Our customers know that they can count on us and on our expertise when it comes to meeting any machining challenge. We have to keep our minds open and focus on innovation as one of our key values. Each and every one of us has to remain innovative, irrespective of his or her position or function within the company, that’s essential for our business.” Luckily, the company has invested in technology from Tornos. The long-standing collaboration with Tornos now boasts an impressive inventory of equipment that includes a small number of single-spindle cam machines, the T4, R10 and MS7 and a large number of multi-spindle machines, the AS 14, SAS 16 and SAS 16 DC. In terms of CNC machines, the company’s fleet includes the Deco 10, Deco 13, Deco 20, Sigma 20 and the EvoDeco 16 models. “We are determined to provide our customers with comprehensive service and are collaborating closely with them. We try to understand their needs and provide advice to jointly optimise the machining processes. Over time, we have gathered a profound expertise in our key markets, and we can efficiently advise our customers in various fields, be it in the automotive, aerospace or in any other industrial sector requiring precision-turned parts.” “The focus is on high added-value products and this requires us to integrate new technologies, such as the latest machines from Tornos. We also pay special attention to quality and we hold ISO: 9001 and IATF: 16949 certifications.” Recently, Vilardell purchased a MultiSwiss 6x16 machine, but what made the company opt for this machine? Jordi Roy Torras says “The choice was driven by rational motivation. In terms of technical specifications, the machine is simply the best in the market. However, we had to also consider the restricted space in our plant. The MultiSwiss boasts the most compact footprint and is definitely the most efficient machine in the market.” “At first sight, this small footprint may seem to be trivial. However, it makes the difference. The machine is really doing well and the fact that it is equipped with a container comprising all peripherals is a key advantage for us. The machine works perfectly and the peripherals are very well integrated.” “We are extremely satisfied with the machine performance. The hydrostatic features work wonders and we are able to achieve an excellent surface finish whereas the tool wear is well below the wear of conventional machines. In addition, the machine boasts excellent ergonomic features.” “The operator can really enter the machining area without difficulty. The tools can easily be installed in the machine without the need for the operator to lean into the machining area and the machine set-up can be realised in next to no time. The MultiSwiss doesn’t only offer excellent performance but also complete ease of operation. Thanks to its high level of productivity, the machine enables us to multiply our performance per square meter while guaranteeing an outstanding part quality both in terms of precision and surface finish.” “It should also be noted that the collaboration with Tornos is excellent and that their service stands out for its high responsiveness. Jordi Roy Torras. says “This really is a combination that pays off for us.”

Creating a sustainable World begins at Home!
If you’ve never heard of a Defense Department organization called Joint Task Force Civil Support, that’s understandable. And arguably, it’s a good thing. JTF-CS may be the smallest task force in the military’s force structure: its headquarters at Fort Eustis, Virginia, has less than 200 people working there, and it's main mission is to organize the military’s response to a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear attack in the United States. Our guest this week is Maj. Gen. Bill Hall, who became the commander of JTF-CS earlier this year. He says he's wanted to command the task force ever since he learned of its existence a decade or so ago. He talked with Jared Serbu about why that's the case.

It's a common assumption that living in a camper is better for the environment-- but is it really? Minimizing water consumption and running on solar power are great steps to take toward living green, but the continuous use of fuel and not always having access to compost or recycling while traveling can make it difficult to know if life on the road is actually helping the earth. Caroline Winslow, a college student and environmentalist, had many of the same questions when she moved into a van for the start of her senior year. Her knowledge on the cross-sector of camper living and environmentalism didn't result in a single, obvious answer to our question, but that's for good reason. She did, however, give us a lot to think about when it comes to our own consumption while traveling, including tips and ideas for reducing our individual footprints.
