Reporting on the latest and most significant developments and stories in the design industry via Business of Home, both Haley Chouinard, Managing Editor, and Caroline Biggs, Market Editor, have seen it all. But one thing that they both agree on is that sustainability is much more than a buzz word in interior design - it is becoming the set standard for industry trends moving forward. With these two market insiders, they talk to us about the products and brands that are on their radar that are actively working on creating more sustainable home design solutions. Of particular note, according to these two journalists, is circularity and how this concept is becoming more of a common practice for many brands in product development. Their observations go beyond the American market, as they frequent fairs in Europe and explain the impact of sustainable home design and the brands that are making the biggest waves. I'm gonna share with you something that I only share with my coaching clients. Decluttering is NOT the answer! WHAT?!! Nope, it's not. You may have typed in "decluttering," "organizing," or "minimalism" to get you to this show. Yes, I do talk about all of those topics, but more importantly, I have a learned that no matter how little you own in your home, you will not love your home or experience peace of mind, unless you establish simple and sustainable home management habits. Sure, we're going to clear the clutter, and yes, we're going to get organized, but more importantly we want to create systems so that we have sustainable home management habits. In today's episode we're going to discuss some reasons why decluttering is not the answer and how creating systems in your home is going to help you build those home management habits. We're covering it all from decluttering to time blocking to better self care. Let's dive in! If this episode blesses you, share it with a friend and leave a review! The cement industry puts out 8% of the world's CO2 emissions, but having said that, it is very durable and technically made with natural materials. As we go along this journey to build a sustainable home, we look into options to reduce the consumption of cement and therefore concrete in our home. We delve into the techniques to build a strong and dry foundation or basement that can withstand the upward ground water pressure and the thrust from the ground on the side walls with minimal cement consumption. A sustainable house begins with a good system to envelop the home to minimize heat loss and energy consumption. Besides insulation and construction techniques we look to windows and how they can help us in creating a tightly sealed home. A well-designed and thought-through window placement design can also help us with solar gain and create desired airflows in the home reducing costs of heating and cooling the home. What are the factors to consider when selecting a foundation or window technology? We learn more from our expert Eric Corey Freed, LEED Fellow Principal, Director of Sustainability at Cannon Design on this episode of Mindful Businesses.https://www.cannondesign.com/people/eric-corey-freedhttps://mindfulbusinessespodcast.com/#sustainablehome #oursustainablehome #mindfulbusinesses #U-Values #Rvalues #superiorwalls #triplepanewindows #tiltandturn #cementindustry #greenhome

In this episode, David opens our eyes to the crazy impact the way we heat and cool our homes is having on the environment. He shares the details of the Maintain, Insulate, Replace, and Electricity (MIRE) approach that enables you to save money while helping the planet and setting your home up to be ready for the future. David also talks through the pros and cons of heat pumps including how to work out if installing one is the right option for your home. KEY TAKEAWAYS Homes create between 20 and 40% of all carbon emissions. Investing £75 in an EPC Survey enables you to understand what your energy-saving options are. Armed with that information, you can ensure that the insulation and heating systems you choose actually are environmentally friendly and will save you money. At some point soon, improving home energy efficiency will become mandatory. Every degree you turn your thermostat down will save you up to £150, per year. If you opt for cavity wall insulation, check the company is signed up with CIGA. Consider insulating under your floors too. A heat pump is a bit like a fridge in reverse, extracting heat from the air. If you want to use a heat pump you've got to insulate your home. For every unit of energy, you put into a heat pump you get 2.5 to 5 units of heat out. A gas boiler would only generate less than one unit of heat. BEST MOMENTS ‘In the UK, homes generate more carbon emissions than cars,' ‘If it's not a well-insulated roof, literally, energy is going through the roof. This is wasted money.' ‘Cavity wall insulation has a 1 to 3 year payback.' What if there was a new kind of data center that could directly warm homes and heat hot water, instead of a gas boiler? One that could use the energy used in cloud computing, not once but twice, and also take away the need for the additional energy used for cooling? That is exactly Thermify's innovation does. Using energy, twice. We talk with Garry Felgate Chair & Energy Lead at Thermify. The technology was invented by Adam Pulley in 2009 and Thermify is bringing to the UK market at the price comparable to heating a home with 2019 oil prices. From helping the environment to keeping senior citizens warm to offering relief for low-income families struggling to pay for their heat, to companies looking for environmentally friendly alternatives for their data centers, everyone benefits from joining this green revolution.Thermify is committed to reducing the pressure on our environment, and on the pockets of our most vulnerable in society.
