Intro If you're thinking about turning your home into a Smart Home, Randy discuss what is necessary to accomplish this. Choices – That Use a Hub SmartThings – This is a company that started out as a Kickstarter in 2012 – for $1.2 million. Just a couple years later, they were acquired by Samsung in 2014 for $200 million. SmartThings is operated by a central hub that connects to your home's router. The SmartThings hub can send out the signal required by Smart Light bulbs, or other Smart Devices that support different protocols such as ZigBee, and Z-Wave. Both of these protocols have their own pros and cons. For instance, ZigBee operates in the 2.4GHz range, which could potentially have some clashes with your WIFI devices that use that frequency. Personally, I try to keep most of my WIFI devices on the 5GHz range, because it can handle more traffic anyway. Z-Wave is considered more reliable because it operates in the 800-900Mhz Range. Z-Wave is also 2-3x's ZigBee in Range. It's really a personal preference between these two, but it's great the SmartThings hub can support devices from Both. Wink – Wink labs is another company that received some crowd-sourcing to begin. This one received about $20 million in funding. Like SmartThings, Wink has its own hub as well. This was actually my starting point for trying out a Smart Home. As long as you have at least the 2nd Generation Hub from Wink, it will support most Smart Home devices with Zigbee and Z-Wave – really the ONLY two protocols I care about at this point. I had mixed results with my beginner setup when I bought my Wink hub that came included with 2 Smart Bulbs. In 2015, I was one of the users affected by a security problem that knocked our hubs offline. I'm sure you know what that means, I can't control my lightbulbs anymore. I saw this as a huge problem, which is why I only wanted to test this out with a couple bulbs. I felt like I wanted more “local control”, you know like I did when I had used the regular light switch that I had been using for decades. What I do – I really prefer to avoid putting more links in a chain when it comes to my setup – especially when each link has its own strengths and weakness. Just like in Audio Engineering, your setup is only as strong as its weakest link. You cannot argue with that. RobDog returns on this tremendously terrific talkathon of podcast-length. Listen in as Real Brian and RobDog nerd out on smart lighting, sound, games, shows, and more. They ask for your opinion on several matters of utmost importance. RobDog gives us some pointers on making healthy lifestyle choices so you're not a terror to your teeth. And finally, be prepared to be shocked by the results of a recent study investigating the correlation between a popular fizzy sugar-free beverage and your health. Yes, yours!  In This Episode Real Brian is joined by the Terror to All Teeth himself, RobDog Back to the Future Lied to us! Captain Influence crashes the segment with some deep thoughts Smart Bulbs are awesome (psst! Check out the Novostella ones RobDog uses here!) How does the Balrog roar? Eating out and craving healthful foods Common dental issues and what they reveal  A new Diet Coke study is in... and the results aren't good.... TV shows, movies, and games galore! Maybe this Episode should have Aired in January! Okay, I'm not going to lie. I, like Real Brian and so many others out there, have fallen into some not-so-awesome habits when it comes to caring for myself. Real Brian has an excuse- he has no kitchen, for Pete's sake! But I... have no excuse. I have a fully-functioning, healthful-food-containing, water-dispensing, kitchen. And yet I listened to this episode with a guilty grimace because my body and my teeth have become a terror to me!  I have done a year-long sugar fast in my past. It was a great year! I felt awesome. Truly. It was also the year I was training for a marathon. I was newly married, in my second year of teaching, young, and overall very healthy. The combination of the exercise, great diet, good night's sleep, and enjoyable work created the perfect environment for my body to thrive. I visited the dentist with no fears or concerns and had excellent appointments. But things changed.  Here I am, several years later, feeling gross. I'm tired all the time. I keep craving more sugar. My teeth are sensitive to cold and sweets. I am terrified to visit the dentist because I know my wallet and my mouth will be hurting for a long time afterward. I know all these things are because I spend so much of my time not exercising, I eat whatever I want, whenever I want, and I keep myself up late into the night each and every night. I am tired of it, though. I'm super over it.  It seems like I'm ready for a new New Year's Resolution! Who's with me? I'm serious. I'll follow up in more show notes later this year. Someone join me, puh-leez! Here's the plan:  Set a regular (better) sleeping schedule that allows for ample time for screen-free relaxation before bed. Drink a whole lotta water every single day. In fact, if you want to be extreme like me, you can go ahead and drink ONLY water. That's what I'm gonna do.  Walk a bit every day. Treadmill, outside, whatevs. Just walk some. And then walk some more.  You know what? That's all I'm going to do. A better sleeping schedule will prime my body for a better day every day. I tend to drink my sugar (juices, sweetened coffee), so drinking only water will significantly reduce the amount of sugar I consume. And pretty much any walking I can do on top of the little walking I currently do will be a dramatic increase.  So, if you're joining me, please comment, or leave Real Brian a message using the "Send Me a Message" button on the side over there, so I will know who to connect with. I'm going to sink my teeth into this new challenge for myself, and I'd love to encourage some of you to do the same. I'll walk with you. (Literally and figuratively!) Your Ideas Needed Real Brian, Captain Influence, and RobDog need your help coming up with next week's guests' superhero handles! Natalie, from Harbinger Coffee, and Cole will be joining the fun, but it will be way more fun if they have alter-egos. So send your suggestions Real Brian's way and listen next week to see if the name you suggest is chosen!  Additionally, Real Brian and RobDog are stumped. They want to use RobDog's super awesome sound and lighting equipment to enjoy a movie in RobDog's basement... but which one should they choose? They're looking for something featuring awesome sound so they can get the full effect of RobDog's setup. Any suggestions?
