Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 343 features an interview with Shaun Ross of Excel. A product of the same Venice Beach punk and skateboarding community that produced Suicidal Tendencies, Excel were mainstays of the Eighties crossover/thrash scene. They went on hiatus after their third album Seeking Refuge, becoming another casualty of a shifting music industry that kept metal at arm's length. The band re-emerged in 2014 to play some reunion shows, and their first two albums were re-issued by Southern Lord Records shortly after. I spoke with bassist Shaun Ross about how doom metal pioneers Trouble influenced his music, and his intentions to keep Excel relevant to the current day. We also discussed why Seeking Refuge is considered a "lost" album, and what the next Excel album might sound like. My thanks again to Shaun for speaking with me, and to you for listening. A Pacific Northwest hardcore/metal legend, Greg Anderson is on the show this week. He played in Engine Kid, Brotherhood, currently runs Southern Lord Records and also plays in Sunn 0))) and Goatsnake. In short, he's done a ton of rad stuff within independent music, so I asked him all the questions. We covered the inception of the PNW hardcore scene, commercial success and musical isolation. We recently had the opportunity to hang out with the incomparable Greg Anderson. In the world of heavy music, Greg is an individual who requires little introduction. He's the man behind the legendary Southern Lord Records as well as a key player in bands that have become nothing short of institutions such as Sunn O))), Burning Witch, Goatsnake, Thorr's Hammer, and countless other projects. As a curatorial and sonic force, Greg Anderson stands among the most important of our time. We talked with him about the joys of discovering new music and unearthing forgotten classics, the bridge between hardcore, jazz, and metal, and what it means to be a lifer. Original Release Date: 8/27/12 Original Episode Notes: I am a lucky guy. I keep getting to make podcasts with musicians from some of my favorite bands. G. Stuart Dahlquist is one of these people. I'm a huge fan of Southern Lord Records, and Stuart was instrumental in the early years of this highly influential label, recording albums and touring with Burning Witch, SunnO))), and Goatsnake (fuck yeah!). Currently, Stuart composes and plays in two other amazing and very different projects; Asva and Brokaw. But would you believe that prior to this illustrious career, Stuart was in a heavy funk Chili Peppers-esque party band with a million dollar record deal on MCA? Or that the best show he ever played was in a grocery store in Entiat, Washington, population: 1,112? Or that you really shouldn't allow he and Stephen O'Malley to wander freely, in Amsterdam, on mushrooms? Find out about this and more on Episode 6 of The Wasted Years.
Host Jason Schreurs chats with another Jason, Jason Hall of Western Addiction. The singer of the San Francisco punk/hardcore band talked about how his collapse while jogging changed his life, the importance of focusing on mental wellness and the concept of emotional intelligence. We both agree that Todd Kowalski (Propagandhi), Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music) and Ice Cube have the best vocal deliveries. https://westernaddiction.bandcamp.com Featured songs: Western Addiction - "Utter Despair" from Frail Bray (Fat Wreck Chords, 2020) Wolfbrigade - "Hammer to the Skull" (The Enemy: Reality, Southern Lord Records, 2019) Photo: Alan Snodgrass About this podcast: Scream Therapy explores the link between punk rock and mental health. Many grew up in the Georgetown and Northwest areas of DC, where they developed a sense of social justice by witnessing its injustices first hand - they were rich kids living in a privileged world, a social elite. Some of the many legendary DC bands: Minor Threat, Teen Idols, S.O.A., FUGAZI, Bad Brains, Dag Nasty, Swiz, Iron Cross, VOID, The Faith, Youth Brigade, Government Issue, Scream, Marginal Man, Gray matter, EMBRACE, Soul Side, rites Of Spring, Ignition, Worlds Collide, Damnation A.D., Battery, Ashes, Gauge, SEGMENT 3: Essential DC Hardcore Records from Our collections: DAG NASTY - Can I Say Original release 1986 Dischord Records Re-Released in 2002 on CD - CD contains bonus material Dag Nasty was a Washington D.C. melodic hardcore band formed in 1985 by guitarist Brian Baker of Minor Threat. Their style of less aggressive, melodic hardcore was influential to emocore, as well as post-hardcore. Check them out here: http://www.daghouse.com/ BAD BRAINS - Rock For Light Original Release 1983 on PVC Records Reissued 1987 Caroline Records ReMixed and Released 1991 Caroline Records. Bad Brains is an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington DC in 1977. They are widely regarded as among the pioneers of hardcore punk. Bad Brains developed a fast and intense punk rock sound which came to be labeled "hardcore", and was often played faster and more emphatically than the music of many of their peers. The unique factor of the band's music was the fact that they played more complex rhythms than other hardcore punk bands, also adapting non-punk style guitar riffs and solos into their songs. The second full-length album by hardcore punk pioneers Bad Brains, released in 1983. A previous album, Bad Brains, was released in 1982 but only on cassette, therefore making Rock for Light Bad Brains' first proper album. https://www.facebook.com/badbrains http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Brains MINOR THREAT - Out of Step Original Release - 1983 Dischord Records Out of Step is the sole studio album by American hardcore punk band Minor Threat. It was released on 45 RPM vinyl in April 1983 through Dischord Records. After a temporary break-up in 1982, Minor Threat entered Inner Ear Studios in January 1983 to record Out of Step. Recording duties were handled by Don Zientara. While the lyrics on their early EPs were an outlet for MacKaye's message, the lyrics on Out of Step deal mainly with friendships and problems associated with them. http://www.dischord.com/band/minor-threat http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minor_Threat Other Links and Info: Dischord Records - http://www.dischord.com/ NYHC Book - http://www.bazillionpoints.com/shop/nyhc-new-york-hardcore-1980-1990-by-tony-rettman/ Bike Mechanic Tales From The Road And Workshop - http://www.velopress.com/books/bike-mechanic/ Cannondale CAAD10 - http://www.cannondale.com/nam_en/2015/bikes/road/elite-road/caad10 Nigel Tufnel - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_Tufnel Our Blog: Deathwish Racing - http://deathwishracing.blogspot.com/ Become a Mountain Bike Radio Member Email Kyle Email Mountain Bike Radio
