This week, a continuation of our series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare bands to a well-established mainstream act. This is not about copycats, but about artists that have similar vibes, share a sonic soundscape, or whose songwriting and playing styles are sympatico. This is another band near and dear to both of you humble hosts. A band that sits atop the pedestal of all things “heavy”. A band that defined metal in the 80s and 90s while becoming somewhat polarizing in more recent years; the iconic METALLICA! Join us as we discover other bands who were influenced and inspired by this hella great band. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It's been said that there is no originality left in rock n' roll and also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As always, we hope we turn you onto something new! Songs this week include: Trivium – “Unrepentant” from The Crusade (2006) Bloodstain – “Black Swan” from I Am Death - EP(2024) Thrasherwolf – “Shameless Loser” from Inside The Sickened Mind (2024) Evile – “Head Of The Demon” from Skull (2013) Machine Head – “Slanderous” from The Blackening (2007) Tantara – “Human Mutation” from Based On Evil (2012) ThrashWall – “War Outside The Wall” from ThrashWall(2020) Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/ https://bonelesspodcasting.com/shows/in-obscuria https://www.facebook.com/InObscuria https://twitter.com/inobscuria https://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/ Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/ If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/ If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

In our last episode, we learned about Michelle Gessner's recent trial in North Carolina, where she was forced to pivot from a regular audio/video presentation, using modern technology, to a courtroom with no microphones, no TVs, no projectors and a single power outlet (already claimed by the clerk and the court reporter!). Click here to catch Episode 170 and hear the back story for today's episode. Michelle used AI to help adapt to this unexpected turn of events, asking it how to craft a visual presentation under these unique circumstances. Today, we learn how it unfolded. You could feel the courtroom change as the case progressed, and this was a quick trial: starting on a Monday, verdict by the end of day Tuesday. Literally two days. In fact, there were some assets to the old-school, analogue approach: better eye contact with jurors, fewer distractions, and more movement. Using what was learned from the focus groups before the trial, and the creative AI suggestions for presenting evidence, Michelle was able to correctly anticipate the jury's emotional reactions as the witnesses unfolded. With AI helping between trial days to make sure she'd met her burden of proof, Michelle then gave her closing argument with foam boards instead of any PowerPoint slides or technology. And the result: she won. If you want more trial prep strategies just like this, but in more depth and delivered straight to your inbox, grab my email newsletter that I send out each month: https://www.larricklawfirm.com/newsletter In this episode, we cover: How the visuals created with AI significantly engaged the jury. Focus groups provided valuable insights for trial strategy. How word choice is so important in your presentation. Closing arguments were enhanced by using visuals instead of technology. Prior to its formation, Michelle gained extensive experience in all legal issues facing the retail, restaurant, and hospitality industries by serving as the Chief Litigation and Employment Law Counsel for publicly traded companies such as Family Dollar Stores, Inc. Laura Payne teams up again with co-host and DRI director, Dave Billington, to delve into the fascinating world of familiar places in dreams and the spooky sense of coming home. They explore the psychological and emotional connections individuals have with dream landscapes, discussing how this can often relate to unresolved issues from the past or a way for the psyche to help us reconnect with a lost part of ourselves. The dialogue also touches on the concept of spiritual geography, the role of the body in dream experiences, and the transformative power of revisiting dream locations. Through personal anecdotes of their separate childhoods in Canada and insights, they highlight the importance of understanding the symbolism of places in dreams and how this understanding can lead to emotional healing and self-discovery.   Your dreams are worth inquiring about too! What CCS 1.0 Taught Us, and Where the Money Should Go Now | Grant Budge, CEO, PeroCycle

Decarb Connect

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 16, 2026 30:04

Host: Alex Cameron, Founder & CEO, Industrial Connect Group LtdGuest: Grant Budge, CEO, PeroCycleEurope spent somewhere between eight and ten billion euros on hydrogen and CCS projects over the last decade. Grant Budge's rough calculation is that the same capital, deployed into carbon capture and utilisation, could have been removing three to six million tonnes of CO2 per year by now. Instead, we have a handful of projects that never crossed the line and an industry still arguing about infrastructure that doesn't exist. Grant was there for CCS v1.0. He knows why it stalled, and he has a clear view on what we keep getting wrong, as well as what could help drive the right capital to the right tech. PeroCycle is CEO of a team converting CO2 into carbon monoxide on site, no pipeline, no offsite infrastructure, negative cost of carbon abatement on a DRI steel plant at current European energy prices. That's the claim. In this episode, Grant walks through how they got there, what could still break it, and why the deeper problem in industrial decarbonization isn't the technology at all.Key Takeaways1.     Why large corporate balance sheets have been part of the problem, not the solution. The assumption that big companies with big balance sheets would lead deployment shaped a decade of policy. Grant explains why that logic kept failing, and what it meant for the technologies that got backed as a result.2.     The real reason hydrogen and CCS absorbed so much capital for so little output. It wasn't just bad technology choices. Grant traces it back to how the direction was set in the first place, and who was driving that conversation.3.     What a global database of validated decarbonization technologies would actually change. Right now, an industrial company trying to compare options has no independent source to go to. Grant makes the case for why that gap exists, who could fill it, and what it would have meant if it had existed ten years ago.4.     How PeroCycle moved from a cost of plus $50-60 per tonne of CO2 abated to minus $80. The engineering decisions behind that shift, and what they tell you about where most tech developers are leaving value on the table.5.     The stage gate that will make or break the business case. Scaling to the steel sector means a first-of-kind plant costing $250-300 million for a pre-revenue startup. Grant explains the strategy for getting there without that number killing the story with investors.6.     Why nickel and glass might matter more to PeroCycle right now than steel. The biggest market isn't always the right first market. My guest today,  Michelle Gessner, joined the podcast back in December of 2024, where we discussed her $21 million verdict against Wells Fargo. Today she's back with the story of a recent verdict success in North Carolina, which suddenly hit an unexpected twist. The case was planned out to make use of high tech video equipment and software, as you would find in a standard, modern equipped court room. But then, it was moved to courtroom that had no technology; in fact, only a single outlet with extension cords. No microphones, no TVs, no projectors. Just old-school visual tools: easels, display boards, pen and notepads, and the projection of your own voice. So how does one pivot, and still incorporate the planned visuals and presentation? AI to the rescue! What was already a useful tool was now needed to address the extra challenge of creating courtroom visuals in a no-technology courtroom. Michelle and I explore how she started by using focus groups to find out weaknesses, then identified what needed to be visual, how to be visual under these unique circumstances, and ultimately AI's creative suggestions. And the focus groups were the key, providing critical demonstratives to bring to life the evidence very early in the case. If you want more trial prep strategies just like this, but in more depth and delivered straight to your inbox, grab my email newsletter that I send out each month: https://www.larricklawfirm.com/newsletter In this episode, we cover: How navigating a no-technology courtroom requires creative thinking. AI is a major asset in effective trial preparation, especially during sudden pivots. Using checklists can streamline witness examination. Objection-proof visuals are key to effective presentations. After learning that 33 billion pounds of plastic enters our oceans annually, she knew that the reusable water bottles and paper straws were no longer going to cut it.  Deirdre first learned about this problem after watching a documentary. On this episode she shares what she learned about all of the plastic bottles entering the world's oceans.  With no business background, no MBA, she's taken a staple in our lives and re-imagined it while also creating jobs for many women in Thailand.  Deirdre has faced some challenges along the way, starting back in 2020 when the pandemic was making things hard for everyone with supply chain issues.  She kept pushing with her vision and eventually left the corporate world to go full time with Dri and it's paying off as she's now expanding where the umbrellas are available,  working with lots of big organizations and is also working on golf & patio umbrellas and more! The “furthermores” which we took while kneeling at the Masonic altar with our hands resting on the Holy Bible, square, and compasses constitute the finest set of guidelines ever compiled by the mind of men. But talk to the mills privately and most will tell you they are not on track. The dominant solutions, hydrogen, carbon capture, EAF transition, are either years away, eye-wateringly expensive, or both. Meanwhile, there's a supply chain vulnerability that almost nobody is talking about publicly: pellets. Every major decarb pathway for steel needs them. Producing them at scale costs a billion dollars and most of Europe buys from a handful of suppliers with almost no leverage. Today we're talking to the team at BSL about whether the industry is solving the wrong problems first, and what a lower-cost, modular alternative on something as fundamental as pellets can do for price and targets.Find out why the gap between published net zero roadmaps and what steel mills actually believe is achievable this decade is wider than most people assume. Explore why agglomeration, the pellet-making step, may offer more near-term commercial leverage than hydrogen or CCS, despite attracting a fraction of the policy attention and capital. Learn how a billion-dollar plant cost becomes a structural barrier that shapes who controls the global pellet supply chain, and why European mills are more exposed than they publicly acknowledge. Hear how a technology that works across both blast furnace and DRI pathways makes its case in an industry where most capital decisions are implicitly picking a winner. Find out about Binding Solutions strategic and financial investors as well as their path forward- and where value sits in deep-tech industrial business like this one. Links: ·       Follow Alex Cameron on LinkedIn and find how to get involved with the membership and work of Decarb Connect·       Connect with Jon Stewart, CEO·       Learn more about Tom Brown, Head of Commercial Strategy·       Check out a video about the team ‘s work with British Steel·       Read a paper by one of BSL's scientists and a British Steel expert  ·        Join Alex and a network of hardtech investors and series B+ tech disruptors at Decarb TechInvest in Boston (September 2025) Want to learn more about Decarb Connect? We provide insights and introductions that derisk decision-making and support industrial leaders in deploying decarbonization and low carbon product strategy. Richard Burnett is a sports performance coach with experience working across high-level athletic environments, including NFL Combine preparation, where he specializes in speed and power assessment, plyometric development, and preparing athletes for elite testing and competition. In this episode, Rich Burnett digs into reactive strength testing, jump feedback, and what really matters when evaluating plyometric ability in athletes. Rich explains the differences between tools like the Just Jump mat, force plates, and Plyomat, emphasizing that context and consistency matter more than chasing perfect numbers. The conversation then moves into single-leg RSI, asymmetries, NFL Combine prep, and how reactivity profiles can reveal sprint deficiencies. Rich also shares how he uses isometrics, band-assisted jumps, and single-leg testing to build faster, more explosive athletes with greater confidence and movement efficiency. That's why Mike Boyle still uses the same deal from 15 years ago and will continue to use the same one because he knows what it's telling him." "The more information you start to uncover the more context you need. Whether it's inflated or not, I know like a 40-inch standing vert on the Just Jump mat is legit. And I also know a 36-inch is good. It still provided us with some key context to allow us to track improvement." "I love RSI as a teaching tool. It's fantastic because a lot of kids don't understand. It's still gluing us in to what's going on with the athlete, how their strategies are. It's helping them understand plyometrics to begin with." "It's also from a symmetry thing, really enlightening to see the difference between a left leg and a right leg when you're testing them independently. You're like, 'wow, that is a massive difference.' And let's remember the fact that this athlete has had two ACLs on this side." "Single leg ground contact time and why you do some of these single leg reactivity drills in the first place because you're dealing with mass in your whole body on one leg. Contact time being rewarded in that sense is not necessarily a bad thing at all. And we're just seeing this clear separation of some of our athletes because of their ability to be more reactive on one leg." "DRI factors in automatically what your initial jump height is. I love it because they want to self-select that. As opposed to stepping off of a box that you just maybe don't feel as confident in, self-selecting that initial jump and then rebounding just feels more confident, feels more engaging and fun for kids." "What I had seen is a really high correlation with single leg max RSI and sprint ability in athletes. Higher than force plate jumps, higher than pretty much anything else." "The step further is now the cyclical five hop where I'm having to really tolerate all of this landing force from my own jump height that I'm creating on the single leg five hop RSI. That's the one that I'm wanting to really flesh out even more to know who's lacking reactivity." "The sprinting is enough for them to get that midfoot forefoot work but there's no real need to specify some sort of plyo around that when they're sprinting already and we sprint so much." About Richard Burnett Richard Burnett is a sports performance coach and the creator of Plyomat, an innovative training system designed to enhance plyometric development, coordination, and reactive strength across a wide range of athletes. With a coaching approach rooted in movement quality and progressive overload, Burnett has built a reputation for blending traditional jump training principles with creative, constraint-based environments that challenge timing, rhythm, and elastic output. His work emphasizes not just how high or far an athlete can jump, but how efficiently they can organize force, absorb impact, and transition between movements. Through Plyomat, Burnett has introduced a practical framework for integrating plyometrics into both high-performance and general athletic settings, offering coaches a scalable system that supports everything from foundational movement literacy to advanced explosive training. His ideas and methods have been adopted by coaches working in team sports, track and field, and youth development, particularly those looking to bridge the gap between structured strength training and dynamic, game-relevant movement.

“Show me an incentive structure and I'll show you human behavior... until employers realize they have more power than they give themselves credit for, this can't continue."My guest this week is Norm Volsky, Managing Partner at DRI and Founder of MVP Growth Partners. Norm has spent the last decade as one of the top executive recruiters in the digital health and employer benefits space - placing the commercial teams that helped build unicorns like Livongo and Hinge Health. In this episode, Norm explains why the next wave of healthcare innovation isn't about adding more "point solutions" to an already fatigued market. Instead, smart money is betting on companies that carve out high-margin, inefficient services directly from the major insurance carriers - like radiology, fertility, and specialty infusion. We discuss how Norm built an "army" of over 500 industry executives to crowdsource due diligence, why the traditional VC model fails in healthcare, and why employers and their benefits leaders are finally at a watershed moment where they must demand true fiduciary alignment from their vendors. If you want to know where the smart money is moving in employer healthcare, and why the "BUCA" carriers should be worried, this episode is a must-listen.Thank you to our 2026 sponsors!ParetoHealth: ParetoHealth empowers midsize employers with a long-term solution to reduce volatility and lower overall health benefits costs.
