What is lucid surrender? Can dreams facilitate psycho-spiritual transformation? Can we be in contact with those who have died and what does this suggest about the afterlife? We speak today with Melinda Powell from the Dream Research Institute in London. Melinda starts by talking about how she has been a lucid dreamer since a child, and she shares a powerful snake dream and how working with that dream in waking life was transformational. We talk about lucid surrender, both dreaming and awake, and how dreams are a kind of angel that is out ahead of us. After the break, we take a question from Max and talk about how our dreams are showing us how to live. We end with a conversation about the luminous void. BIO: Melinda Powell is co-founder of the Dream Research Institute, London, and past Vice-President of the International Association of Dreams. She has authored three books: The Hidden Lives of Dreams, Lucid Surrender: The Alchemy of the Soul in Lucid Dreaming, and her latest: Dreams My Mother Taught Me: Lessons in Lucid Dreaming from Beyond the Grave, which will be available from June 30th, 2025. Once again we've come to the end of another series and once again we're going to end with our popular Q&A session. Thanks for listening and joining us on board the Dream Boat this time round. We love having you here and enjoy reading your thoughts and questions.   Dave pops back on board to join Laura for the wrap up and they tackle some great dream themes in this session, including toilet dreams and funeral dreams, discussing their psychological implications and the importance of ‘letting go' for personal transformation. Whereas toilet dreams can reflect bodily needs or deeper psychological issues, funeral dreams signify the need for ritualistic closure and rebirth.   They discuss how dreams can serve as a reflection of unmet needs in waking life and how the process of letting go can be both challenging and necessary for growth, leading to deeper self-awareness and emotional processing.   They also address the impact of intense dreams on sleep quality and the significance of sleep hygiene and mindfulness in achieving restful sleep. Laura discusses mindfulness techniques from her book Nine Steps to a Mindful Life Without Meditating which can help calm the mind before sleep.   Laura's book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nine-Steps-Mindful-Without-Meditating/dp/0995488908   END OF SHOWNOTES   Your dreams are worth inquiring about too! What happens at the intersection of dreams and consciousness? In this conversation, Laura is joined again by Maria to explore the profound notion of one very powerful question: WHO IS THE DREAMER. Their guest to help dismantle this philosophical dream knot is Dr. Newton Kondaveti, of Quantum Life University near Hyderabad in India. Dr Kondaveti shares his insights into the relationship between dreams and consciousness, the significance of lucid dreaming, which can pinpoint the path to a higher awareness. He also considers the concept of the Akashic records, a cosmic library or energetic archive of all universal events, thoughts, words and emotions. They discuss how dreams serve as a tool for self-discovery and can alleviate suffering.  Dreams contain hidden dimensions of our existence with dreams revealing hidden dimensions not accessible in waking life, as well as providing insights into past and future experiences.   Dr. Kondaveti discusses his work at the Quantum Life University (QLU), emphasizing the importance of understanding dreams in the context of spiritual science and personal growth and the university's aim of blend spirituality with scientific understanding.   QLU is on qluglobal.com Insta:qlugobal Youtube.com/qluglobal   END OF SHOWNOTES   Your dreams are worth inquiring about too! We got married and life has been hard ever since.Early 30s, 5 ft 10, dark hair/eyes, fit lean build, young lookingTL;DRI feel like a pathetic loser and single father. I know I'll be bitter forever but can't bring myself to finally leave her. None of my family/friends know other than 1 friend. Talked to lawyers. All of her friends/family/client's know. I see them and am ashamed. I have the lowest self respect ever. She has been berating meyears. She won't let me lead in any aspect. I have no frame. Why am I like this? Do I think I had my shot so now I need to take care of my sons? I don't want to see my kid's half as often? Is it because I've never been with another girl? Do I worry about her finding a new man or I won't find a new girl? How can I look my sons in the eye and tell them I wasn't strong enough to do what I recommend for them? She says she loves me. I love her, but this seems really unhealthy. Where is my masculine desire to leave? Am I the problem? Is she? Does she have BPD?Backstory timeline:High school, sophomore year. Ask her to be my gf immediately after she broke up with her boyfriend, she ended it the next day. It was because she was fooling around with her ex.Time goes by, we start dating. Our relationship is constant drama and roller coaster of emotions. We were both jealous of any interaction with the opposite sex.She got pregnant Junior year but she miscarried. We still dated and she gets pregnant my first semester in college when I was thinking of breaking up with her.We got married, lived with family for the first while with my son and then got an apartment. I had been bouncing around between part time jobs while going to school and she started her own company doing aesthetics. Mainly eyelashes.I did poor in school. Hadn't grown up and wasn't being a man.She goes to Aesthetic school and we both work evenings. The cycle repeats of me getting a new job every year only to increase pay slightly and inching towards my degree. She continued with Aesthetics.Have another son.She had been inappropriately chatting with a friend of ours. She moves out and tells me we need some time apart and strings me along. We start going to counseling. I think this can work. She starts seeing change in me. I asked her about any cheating which she lied about and I believed. She tells me about cheating on me.I'm furious but still attend counseling.I'm done. Planning for divorce mentally. Checked out from the relationship. We find out she's pregnant (with my kid) and decide we can make it work. She wants to stop counseling (but not tell the counselor she's pregnant.) I move into her apartment and shortly thereafter she has a stillborn birth at 26 weeks. We buy a house together and fix it up before moving in. She starts giving off hints that she doesn't think our relationship will work. She decides to try and make it work but in order to do so she needs to tell the truth. She tells me that the guy is a friend of mine. She saw him. They kissed. She tells me we only got back together because pregnant.I'm mad, sleep downstairs, cut ties with multiple friends. She says she will do whatever it takes to make it work. Time goes by.I get a full time job and am still in school. She is pregnant with my 3rd son.She finds out I've been looking at porn. Get kicked out of house. Live with parents.I move back in. Get a full time salaried position making more than I've ever made by a decent amount.Graduate with a degree in IS.Last year shortly before summer she tells me she wants to get a divorce. Our relationship is a constant cycle, I don't try to get a better job, We don't make enough money, She thinks she's better off without me.I try to become Superman. I go to counseling&coaching. I try to become a better father/man. Work on my career. Be better in every aspect. I'm checked out from the relationship. At my birthday dinner she says she wants to make it work AGAIN. While thinking/planning I'm just sitting in limbo not making a decision.Things start looking up. Relationship is better than ever. Closer than ever. Spend time together. Help each other. Tells me she loves me more than ever. Cries because our sex is so good.A few months ago she went to a concert with a girlfriend. Got blackout drunk, ended up kissing a random guy in a parking garage. She says I should leave her. At the time I didn't really care. What's one more on the record?I had been consuming red pill content over the past year and a half.We find out our toddler is Autistic. Therapy/school is expensive. We talk, she starts being better. Laura and Maria delve into the fascinating intersection of psychedelics, dreams, and shamanic practices. They are joined by one of the leading researchers in this field Dr Simon Ruffell of Onaya Science. Together they explore how psychedelics like ayahuasca and psilocybin are being integrated into modern medicine and the role dreams play in this process.    They discuss the cultural significance of dreams in shamanic training, the differences in dream interpretation between Western and indigenous perspectives, and personal experiences with dream codes that predict future events. The dialogue emphasizes the importance of understanding these experiences within their cultural contexts and the potential for deeper insights into mental health and spirituality.    In this conversation the intricate relationship between dreams, psychedelics, and cultural interpretations are explored. They discuss the significance of ayahuasca in dream experiences, the differences between psychedelic states and psychosis, and the political factors influencing psychedelic research.    Simon shares his initiative to bridge indigenous knowledge with scientific inquiry, emphasizing the importance of collaboration. Speaker Om Birla urged MPs to be seated and respect Parliament or face action. Meanwhile, the opposition staged a walk-out in the Rajya Sabha. Tensions are rising between the government and opposition, with concerns over electoral roll manipulation, violence in Manipur, and India's handling of the Trump administration. The government aims to secure Parliament's approval for grants, the Manipur budget, and the Waqf Amendment Bill.A fashion show in Kashmir's Gulmarg has sparked controversy, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah saying his government had no involvement. The event, held during Ramzan, was criticized by Kashmir's chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who called it “outrageous” and “obscene.” Abdullah, responding to the criticism, expressed that the show disrespected local sensitivities during the holy month. The fashion show, organized to mark the 15th anniversary of designer label Shivan & Narresh, took place on snow-covered slopes of Gulmarg on Friday. Kannada actor Ranya Rao, arrested for smuggling 14.2 kg of gold worth Rs 12.56 crore, has links to a land deal in Karnataka. The deaths occurred from Friday to Saturday and targeted Alawite communities. Sharaa, whose rebel group, Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), overthrew Assad's regime in December, promised to hold those responsible for the violence accountable. Substack Week: The Shared Ownership Challenge, Understanding Clear Accountability in Engineering Teams With Rafa Páez Welcome to our Substack Week, where we interview thought leaders who publish newsletters on Substack to help you find inspiring voices that drive our community forward. In this episode, we explore the concept of shared ownership and its pitfalls with Rafa Páez, an experienced engineering leader with insights on creating clear accountability in teams. The Pitfalls of Shared Ownership In engineering teams, shared ownership often manifests as ambiguity in responsibility and accountability. Rafa shares a personal experience where assigning two engineers to lead an initiative resulted in nothing getting done, as each assumed the other would take action. This phenomenon highlights how shared ownership without clear accountability can lead to missed deadlines, poor quality deliverables, and team conflicts. "It might not be my fault because I thought the other person was available, I thought the other person had more time to actually work on that initiative." Understanding the Bystander Effect The bystander effect, a psychological phenomenon first identified by social psychologists, explains why people are less likely to take action when others are present. In a team setting, this manifests as members assuming someone else will take responsibility, leading to collective inaction. This effect can significantly impact team productivity and project outcomes. "Because there are more people there, someone thinks that someone else will take care of that thing, whether it's a project, initiative, or any other action." The DRI Framework: Creating Clear Ownership The Directly Responsible Individual (DRI) concept, popularized by Gitlab and Apple, addresses the accountability gap by ensuring one person is clearly responsible for each significant initiative. This framework emerged after a failed project launch where no clear ownership led to quality issues. The DRI approach creates clear lines of responsibility while maintaining collaborative team dynamics. "You can have multiple DRIs for different aspects, but at the end, it needs to be one responsible for the overall project." Implementing DRI Successfully For leaders implementing the DRI framework, several key considerations are crucial for success. DRIs should be assigned thoughtfully based on skills and experience, with senior team members often better suited for these roles. The framework must be supported by a culture that empowers DRIs to make decisions while maintaining team collaboration. "DRIs need to be empowered to make decisions. If they are not empowered to make decisions, this role is not going to work because they're going to feel frustrated." Avoiding Common Anti-patterns When implementing the DRI framework, leaders should be aware of potential anti-patterns that can emerge. These include DRIs becoming bottlenecks, erosion of team collaboration, and overuse of the framework for minor tasks. Success requires finding the right balance and ensuring the framework enhances rather than hinders team dynamics. "Another issue or anti-pattern is the erosion of collaboration - some people might get the wrong concept about DRIs and say 'I don't need to collaborate anymore.'" Building a Culture of Accountability Creating a successful culture of accountability requires clear communication about the DRI role and its implications. Leaders must ensure DRIs are supported while maintaining team collaboration and avoiding the framework becoming overly bureaucratic. The focus should be on enabling effective decision-making and clear ownership while preserving team dynamics. "Consider the skills when assigning DRIs, support people in this role, and remember that DRI is an organizational agnostic framework that adapts to the organizations we are within." Laura announces the DRI's first retreat in the home of dream incubation – Epidavros in Greece.  Twelve lucky people will join her and Sarah Janes from Dream Mysteries in May (see how to join the retreat link below*) for a full immersion in the ancient temple sleep practices for healing. Laura and Melinda run through the power of these ancient rituals before Laura interviews Sarah Janes about her fascinating work in this area.   Sarah Janes talks about how she became fascinated by the power of dreams during childhood and what led her from jettisoning her career as a US show promoter to become a specialist in ancient dream cults through the development of her work at Dream Mysteries.   Laura and Sarah discuss the beauty of Epidavros and how its magic is spell binding, especially wrapped around the myths and practices of the Greek healing God Asklepios.  Sarah Jane reveals how retreatants are often called by the God himself in dreams to come out to the sanctuary and how they find her online after such a dream. Laura discusses how the God turned up for her once in a spiritual workshop before she became a psychotherapist which led her to visit the site at Epidavros and, like Sarah Janes, the visit felt like a powerful ‘coming home'.   Sarah runs through what the retreatants will find at the temple and how the group will try out sleep hypnosis, purification practices, sound work and dream theatre work, in similar ways to the ancients who experienced dreaming there thousands of years ago.   The two dream researchers also look at a similar incubation project in a recreated oasis in the Egyptian desert and the links between the ancient Egyptian dream incubation practices with the cult of Asklepios in the Ancient Greek and Roman worlds.   *If you want to join them in May the Retreat Link is here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/divine-dreaming-retreat-in-greece-tickets-1236007895889?aff=oddtdtcreator   Your dreams are worth inquiring about too! In this festive conversation, Laura and Melinda are joined by author Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, Dickens' great, great, great granddaughter to explore the profound influence of Charles Dickens on Christmas traditions, dreaming and the cultural significance of his work, particularly 'A Christmas Carol.'    They delve into Dickens' complex relationship with sleep and dreams, which is often explored in his novels with their themes of redemption and social responsibility, and his bizarre sleeping habits. Dickens suffered from parasomnias – sleeping disorders like hallucinations and nightmares, which are the hallmark feature of ‘A Christmas Carol' when the ghost of Marley terrorises his business partner Ebenezer Scrooge in his sleep on Christmas Eve, with dramatic consequences.   Lucinda, biographer and Victorian historian, shares insights into Victorian Christmas celebrations and personal traditions, emphasizing the importance of connection and joy during the holiday season. They discuss the enduring legacy of Dickens' storytelling and its relevance in today's world and Lucinda's new book, ‘A Victorian Christmas' as well as her earlier book ‘Dickens and Christmas'.   Your dreams are worth inquiring about too! The Clare Oral History Podcast

Biddy Early (1798-1874) was born in Killanena and lived most of her life in Feakle in Co. Clare.  She was a ‘bean feasa' or wise woman (literally a ‘woman of knowledge'). She was famous as a woman of otherworldly knowledge and the power to cure people's ills, whether physical, psychic, spiritual, or even economic. In more recent times she has been casually called a witch, but that word and concept belong to other cultures.  This notion did not really exist in the Gaelic culture of 19th century West of Ireland and it is inaccurate to apply it to Biddy Early. These stories are told mostly by local people Paddy O' Malley, Peggy Hogan, Mary O' Connor, May Tuohy, Rita Flaherty, Kevin Dunleavy and Joe Tuohy, with two  from West Clare (Francie Kenneally, Catherine Talty). The interviewers are Tomás McConmara, Paula Carroll and Tara Sparling.Find transcript of the story told by Francie Kenneally hereMany Cuimhneamh an Chláir oral history collections are available in the Digital Repository of Ireland.  Contributors above that you can explore in more detail in the DRI are Peggy Hogan, Mai Tuohy and Catherine Talty.BOOKS REFERRED TO:Biddy Early, The Wise Woman of Clare by Meda Ryan GLOSSARY OF TERMS‘Sí Gaoithe' (fairy wind):  A mysterious strong gust of wind that seems to whip up from nowhere on an otherwise fine day.  Said to be caused by the fairies.Baker's Bread: Bread bought in a shop (yeasted), rather than made at home (unleavened).‘Terrible Make Way':  A big fuss. Piseogs: A form of folk magic, always malevolent.
