Years later, the boys finally talk about No Heroes by Converge. For realsies.
Finally. An episode that is less than 2 hours long. It helps that this week we're covering Seizures in Barren Praise by grind/crust band Trap Them. The album is only 10 tracks and 25 minutes total. Compared to the last few episodes this one just BREEZES by! It also helps that Seizures in Barren Praise by Trap Them happens to be one of my favorite albums of all time. Illegally downloading this album from some guy's blogspot page when I was 16 started a snowball effect that would alter how I listened to heavy music going forward which made this a bit of a nostalgia trip for me. We also do our best to parse through the loose plot that makes up the concept of not only this album but all of Trap Them's music up to this point. The vinyl I have here I believe is a second pressing, standard weight on ultra clear vinyl. It comes in a nice enough trifold jacket which shows off the album's full artwork done by Converge vocalist Jacob Bannon. The album sounds perfectly fine. Minimal surface noise but if we're being honest, any surface noise would get lost in the chaos of the album anyway. I picked this up a few years ago used from Pharmacy Records in Greenville which is, for my money, the best place in the upstate to find metal/punk/hardcore records. We're lucky enough to have a few decent record stores here in the upstate but if you're into heavy music at all, Pharmacy is the one you wanna go to. In the news corner this week we check in with our old pal Tim Lambesis and see what his old band members are saying about him. Hint: it's not good. We also check in with what's going on with Death Grips and Andy Morin to see what a new band member is saying about him. Hint: It's not good.Instagram - @MBFrecordspodAmanda's IG/TikTok/YouTube - @MothraLunaJason's Discogs - https://www.discogs.com/user/FrequencyShift/collection Theme music by SHADE08 x 80root on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewQPpTnfgg&list=PPSVHosted by Ausha. With a lineage stretching several decades, Converge have solidified their reputation as one of hardcore's most influential and hardest-working bands. This wasn't accomplished overnight, but we may be able to pinpoint when things began to click. Originally released as a 5-song EP, Petitioning the Empty Sky currently stands as a collection of material from various recording sessions. Written by the combined forces of vocalist Jacob Bannon and guitarist Kurt Ballou, these tracks feature a familiar dissonance and intensity. This is far from the Converge we know today, but from the first moments of its 7-minute opener, it's clear that Petitioning the Empty Sky is a sign of great things to come. On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Jacob Bannon, the lead vocalist of the band Converge. They discuss the band's experience at Welcome to Rockville and Sonic Temple, expressing their gratitude for being invited to perform in such environments. Despite being a heavy and aggressive band, Converge appreciates the opportunity to share their creative work with diverse audiences. They discuss the longevity of the band, having maintained the same lineup since 2000, which is a rarity in the music industry. Bannon reflects on his early years and the connection he felt with heavy and aggressive music, which eventually led him to pursue a career as a musician and artist. The conversation turns to the importance of visual artistry in Converge's merchandise and overall presentation. Bannon emphasizes the value of cohesive and visually appealing designs that complement the band's music. He shares his own passion for collecting band shirts, recognizing their ability to evoke nostalgia and remind individuals of a particular time and place in their lives. The conversation delves into the significance of nostalgia and how certain items can represent moments of personal growth and self-discovery within the aggressive music world. Bannon highlights the therapeutic nature of music for both the listeners and the artists themselves. He acknowledges the power of music as a medium for emotional and psychological expression, providing a much-needed outlet for individuals to work through their struggles and connect with others who may be going through similar experiences. As someone who has dedicated more than half of his life to music, Bannon expresses his gratitude for the opportunity to make a positive impact on people's lives and help them feel less isolated in their own struggles. The show concludes with a heart warming story shared by Bannon about a stolen shirt that was returned to him after several years. This anecdote serves as a reminder of the sentimental value that certain items hold and how they can acquire new stories and memories over time. Overall, the conversation between Pipeman and Jacob Bannon showcases the passion, dedication, and artistic vision behind Converge's music and merchandise, as well as the profound impact that aggressive music can have on both the creators and the listeners. Kayle couldn't think of an album to listen to so he pulled out 'ol reliable Converge: their 2004 follow-up to Jane Doe.
Took them long enough, but the boys finally get to the latest Converge album, BLOODMOON!
Those of you who follow Veil of Sound closely, very closely might have stumbled across this sentence a few weeks ago: ”Maybe this interview will be the start for another series of interviews, who knows?” was the end of our article accompanying our interview with Jacob Bannon. That was part of our series to close out 2021 and here we go: we have yet another interview with a Converge member not talking about the band itself too much. This time it's Kurt Ballou and our topic is “producing”! When people talk about music they often talk about the skills of a certain instrumentalist or vocalist. Sometimes, very seldom, people talk about the production of a record and then it is even more difficult to know what a producer does. Therefore we were very fortunate when Kurt Ballou agreed to do an interview with us and gave us the opportunity to learn how he became a producer, how he sees the role of producers (and himself as one of them) and how important the individual process is. So, as usual, we do not want to keep you waiting for too long – enjoy our interview with Kurt Ballou!

Day 9 - final day and what do you do for a grand finale? You go out big! And that's what we do! Ending this marathon that started with Motorpsycho and had some of our favorite artists - there cannot be anybody but the one and only Jacob Bannon! However, we will not be talking about Converge or Wear Your Wounds too much, but rather about his art for he is one amazing artist; everyone who has looked at the Converge-record covers will know what I am talking about. Jacob's art is not only visible in the Converge releases but also on a lot of the early Hydra Head 7”s like Corrin, on records by Cave In, Knut or hardcore classics like American Nightmare's self-titled record or Every Time I Die's Hot Damn!! However to him artwork is much more than just the single visual created for it.

It's another eclectic (egg-leg-tic?) week on Riot Act with modern heavy metal, alt-country Americana, shoegaze-y alt-rock and a post-rock-pop album all getting a look in but Remfry's most excited to talk about the new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical for some unfathomable reason, which leads Steve to recall a (slightly in-accurate) fact about Lord Webber and Timmy Mallet (it was Webber's wife who challenged him, not Simon Cowell). Still … Steve has never let the truth get in the way of him bringing up Bombalurina's classic Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini before and he's not about to start now (Patreons, expect a Classic Album on Bombalurina's seminal masterpiece Huggin' An'a Kissin' imminently). We also discuss the brief internet shitstorm that's surrounded Jacob Bannon's iconic Jane Doe artwork for the utterly sublime Converge album of the same name but rather than simply pretend we're experts in the field of copyright and trademark like seemingly every other twazzock on the internet, we've consulted a real IP lawyer who actually knows what they're talking about. In a shocking turn of events, it turns out that most people commenting on said story don't have a clue what they're talking about. Speaking of people on the internet who don't have a clue what they're talking about, Pitchfork have 're-appraised' some records they reviewed in the past ... except they haven't. They've simply got other people to appraise them who think different things to the people who initially appraised them, which feels like a colossal waste of everybody's time. Albums reviewed this week are In the Court of the Dragon by Trivium (43:38) In These Silent Days by Brandi Carlile (1:27:55) Modern Escapism by blanket (1:40:48) and Windflowers by Efterklang (1:50:28) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

I'm very excited to welcome comedian Dan St. Germain to the show. Dan co-hosts WrestleRoasts, a hilarious new podcast where they roast a different wrestling personality every week. You can see their roast of Bret Hart here. I talk to Dan about the link between comedy and wrestling, which wrestlers have the best comedic timing and if anybody ever got upset about any of his roasts. We also discuss the current scene in WWE and AEW. After the interview, I offer some thoughts on New Japan and my predictions for AEW Revolution this Sunday. He is also a co-owner of longtime hardcore/punk/metal label Deathwish Inc. Jacob talks about how he uses his music and art to express his internal struggles. This week on Talking to Ghosts we have Stephanie Marlow! Stephanie is an independent PR professional and one of our most frequent contacts! She works with labels like The Flenser and Dais Records to promote new releases and tours for recents guests like: Elizabeth Colour Wheel, Jacob Bannon, and Drowse. We talked about a day in the life of a PR person, working with artists during a global pandemic, and why Road Burn Festival is so special. “At Home” is a version of the podcast that is being recorded and released during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please forgive our audio quality and the awkward conversation, I think you understand why it had to be this way. Talking to Ghosts is produced and recorded by Michael Kurt and Wes Mueller. Our fantastic 5-year cover art was made by Alicia Gaines (of the band Ganser, who have a new album available for pre-order!).
We've got a huge episode of Squared Circle Pit this week, as we have the AEW World Champion Jon Moxley (formerly WWE's Dean Ambrose) entering the pit. Jon talks about the bands he got into when he was younger, his love of Deftones, going to concerts in Vegas, like taking his wife to see Misfits. Jon discusses his favorite wrestling from when he was a kid, his ECW fandom, and who his favorite guys were, his backyard wrestling career. We talk about this weekend's AEW Double or Nothing PPV, where he is facing Mr. Brodie Lee (the former Luke Harper) for the world title. It's a fun discussion as always. AEW's Double or Nothing is this Saturday, May 23rd, available on B/R Live! and FITE. Get more info here.
