Festivities are held in the historic Westside neighborhood, home to many of Kansas City's Latinx residents. It began in the classrooms of the Mattie Rhodes Art Center where children worked on Dia de los Muertos themed projects after school. It was in one of those classrooms that Richard Bay, a local artist and art educator in the Kansas City Public School District, held a discussion night about the holiday where an impressive crowd gathered to learn about its traditional practices. The people's interest was apparent, as was the need for more space, and thus a gallery was opened next door in order to foster a space for cultural and artistic education. Since then Mattie Rhodes Center has dedicated itself to this idea and hosts a variety of events during Dia de los Muertos, including an altar exhibition made for and by members of the community, cultural workshops and tours, and related celebrations in the streets of the Westside. Altogether, we hope to create an experience that is similar to and honors the traditional celebration of Dia de los Muertos in Mexico. We cherish the connections and collaborations we have made through this event with our community members as well as valued institutions around the city such as the Kansas City Museum in the Northeast, Stonelion Puppets Theater, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The holiday of Dia de los Muertos varies from place to place, from person to person. The holiday originates in Mexico, though it is celebrated in many other countries in different forms. Dia de los Muertos embodies themes from both All Saints and All Souls Day (Catholic holidays) and those of the Aztecs and the Mayans. The culminations of these many beliefs focus on families reflecting upon those who have passed and rejoice in the happiness they once shared. Even though families are saddened by a loved one's departure, they do not cry on the Day of the Dead. The elders say the road back to the world of the living must not be made slippery by tears. El Dia de Los Muertos evokes happy and sad emotions, but it is always a celebration that unites the living the dead together for a short time. The holiday can be seen as practice in which we laugh at death, we triumph over it by celebrating life. While Halloween focuses on scary images of monsters, witches and other frights, the Day of the Dead displays a strong sense of respect and love for family, ancestry, and community. Death is a natural part of life, and this holiday allows people to talk and laugh about death and lose some of their fear. Although traditionally Dia de Los Muertos is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, many people celebrate the days of the dead from October 18th through November 9th, with each day dedicated to different groups of souls, also including a thirteen day feast. For this celebration of life and death, ofrendas (altars) are constructed for those who have passed and people tell stories and reflect on the good times they all once shared. There are many standards for the creation of the altars. Specific items are called for, the inclusion of the four elements (earth, wind, fire, and water), a towel and bowl of water, a cushion or chair, photographs, candles, flowers, personal items and even food. Our exhibit of altars and artwork displays and explains these aspects and brings others to the surface. Some work portrays the traditional aspects of the day of the dead, while others reflect contemporary views that push the principles of ofrendas. They also present many different views to the public, some dedicated to family and others purely aesthetic. The artwork of various local artists on the walls stirs up the celebration and positive energy that the holiday exudes. The fiestas take you right to the heart of Mexico with the parade, performers, live music, food, activities, marketplace, and art that involve the entire community. The workshops teach you how to decorate and prepare for the festivities, and the slide presentation shows you first hand accounts of the holiday in Mexico. Overall, we bring you many ways to learn, understand, experience and celebrate this wonderful and uplifting Mexican holiday. Traditional Mexican Calendar: Many people witness the holiday of Dia de los Muertos on November 1st and 2nd, All Saints and All Souls Days. In some areas of Mexico the holiday begins as early as October 18th and lasts through November 9th. Although the days change from place to place and family to family, the basic festivities remain the same. Below is a calendar of the Days of the Dead from many areas in Mexico. October 25th- The Feast of the Holy Souls. This is the beginning of a 13-day feast of the dead for the Tzeltals of Mexico. Here graves are decorated with pine needles and tusus (yellow wildflowers). October 27th- The souls of those who have no living family members are offered breads and water from jugs on this day. October 28th- On this day the accidentados return (the souls of those who died in accidents). This is also the day for the souls who have caused great harm or murder to return. They are also offered jugs of water and breads. These souls are un-forgiven for their acts, so their offerings are placed outside the houses or in the corner of a church. October 30th- The unbaptized souls return on this day. The children who visit on this day are known as Los Ninos Limbos (children who died before baptism). October 31st- Angelitos (the souls of children) show up on this day and must return to the land of the dead by afternoon of the following day. Toys and candy are left for them. November 1st- The souls of the dead adults return today. Cigars, cigarettes, alcohol and liquor is left out for the adults only on this day. The adults may remain until the next day. Many families spend the night in the cemetery to spend time with them. This day is known as All Saints Day, a Catholic festival day. Someone is called to ring a bell through town or in the church to summon the souls of the adults. November 2nd- Known as All Souls Day, another Catholic festival day. This day focuses on the living assisting the dead in their move into Heaven. This is usually the last day of celebration and includes the largest fiestas. By the end of the day, all the souls must leave, and to help them along, the mummers (dancers) wear costumes and masks and run through the streets dancing and singing, trying to scare the spirits back to the land of the dead. November 3rd- The living may share and eat the objects from the altar. People usually give their objects to their neighbors saying, they were left for them by the souls. In Mixquic, a bellman rings a bell on the hours of each day of the dead to announce the different happenings and rituals to be performed. The Aztecs dedicated an entire month to the dead. The month was called Miccailhuitontli, and was named after and presided over by the goddess Mictecacihuatl, who was the Lady of the Dead. This happens from July 24th through August 12th. During this month, rituals were dedicated to her and the god of war known as Huitzilopochtli. This was the time of the harvest and it was believed that the souls followed the scents of the harvest in order to find their way to their altars.
(T5//E20) "The Universal" ¡Hola terrícolas! This week on MYTH, it's the epic conclusion to the tale of the Mayan Hero Twins. You'll see that you should always be kind to orphans, that you shouldn't let dancers burn down your house, and that resurrection is tricky. Then, in Gods and Monsters, if you hear whistling from the woods, hide your thumbs. Source: Mayan Mythology
This week on MYTH, Xbalanque is going to have to face the lords of death without his brother. You know, because he's dead. Well, mostly dead. You'll learn that decapitated heads make good balls, that it's easy to confuse a skull ball with a rabbit, and that the best way to win a ball game is to destroy the ball. Then, in Gods and Monsters, you'll discover that a magical goat man only has one weakness, and it's both very obvious and very weird. Source: Mayan Mythology
This week on MYTH, it's finally time to play ball with Death. You'll learn that even death gods hate mosquitoes, that macaw feathers can be used to light cigars, and that you should always be wary of bats. Then, in Gods and Monsters, a temple will be built using nothing but a lot of hot air. Source: Mayan Mythology

Tzompantli's album "Beating The Drums of Ancestral Force" was one of the hardest releases of 2024 so we're stoked to get to chat to the man. We delve into the cultural influences that shape Ortiz's music, particularly the incorporation of indigenous folklore and themes. The discussion also touches on the dynamics of live performances, the challenges of touring with a large band, and Ortiz's personal interests outside of music, including movies and hobbies. Isaac Rodriguez discovered, to his big surprise, that mainstream astrologers never really look up at the sky. As John Lash explained in an earlier episode, tropical (mainstream) astrology isn't really about the stars. The signs are merely named after star constellations that approximately corresponded with the sectors of the signs a few thousand years ago. Isaac Rodriguez learned about sidereal astrology, the kind that goes by the actual star constellations and takes their apparent movement in the sky into account. With the precession of the equinoxes, the positions of the constellations constantly move – or seem to move, from earth's viewpoint. If sidereal astrology were to replace tropical astrology as it is used today, the painful problem for people who are into this would be that their birth chart would be completely wrong. “I made up a term for this, ‘astrology collapse disorder'”, says Isaac. But the two models seem to work on different levels. A higher and a lower octave, if you will. Or, Isaac claims, in the divine reality (sidereal) and in a false matrix (tropical). “I see it like this: Tropical keeps you human, sidereal makes you celestial.” The tropical model keeps us in what the Hindus call samsara, the karmic cycle. “And if we stick to that, we will probably stay in the loop longer than if we study sidereal, which is the way to break the cycle.” The Church condemned real astrology but then allowed an astrology that is like a broken clock, according to Isaac. “So we're living in a false matrix. Tropical astrology is about the very human issues, my love life, my job, my relations, whereas sidereal astrology is about ‘show me my deepest, darkest shadows, show me all, I need to get out of here'.” Tropical astrology has twelve signs. The thirteenth sign is crucial in understanding how to get the “broken clock” to work again. It is a constellation called Ophiuchus, which means the serpent-bearer. In ancient cultures it was associated with a serpent of some kind, like the plumed serpent in Mesoamerican traditions. And it is located right at the Galactic center, where there is a supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A . The Maya called it Xibalba, the crossing. This point was pivotal also to the Gnostics. This is where they located Pleroma, from where Sophia and Christos came. “Could it be that we have a connection to another world through that point? We have to pay attention to that part of the sky”, says Isaac. He tells about the many pieces of evidence for the importance of this point in the universe that you can find in Egyptian temples. Some groups have carried the truth about our immortality and our divine origin through history, and been persecuted for that. But why don't we all know this? Because we have amnesia. There is probably a purpose for that. We are supposed to learn certain things through the illusion of separation and time. But some people who possess the truth hide it for nefarious purposes, Isaac believes. “The symbolism of the age of Pisces is separation from source. The separated parts are supposed to merge through matter, through the physical. But it has also created the opportunity for manipulation and brainwash.” Isaac's website The documentary Code 12 Isaac's Youtube channel Isaac's Instagram

After an emotionally charged ending that saw the Damned Fools defeat the Ulitharid, they were suddenly confronted with Bhaal himself, Lord of Murder! Bhaal gave them an ultimatum: their freedom in exchange for a death. Xibalba volunteered, but Aego remembered the feather Zauriel had given them to summon her in an hour of need—and summon her they did! She arrived to confront the evil one, and as the Fools fled, she made the ultimate sacrifice to save them. But Bhaal, laughing, issued one more decree: One of three people they hold dear was going to die. It was up to them to choose which two they were going to save in Session 146 of DICELORE's BALDUR'S GATE: Eldritch Secrets!
In this episode, Khyler and Kahlia take a journey through two underworlds; Xibalba, the Mayan Underworld, and the Hades ruled Underworld of Greek Mythology. They attempt to identify similarities and differences between the two regions, speculate whether they'd survive a trip through either of them, and agree they'd much rather deal with Hades than the Mayan Pus God.Email the show! justmythingaround@gmail.comMusic from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/paulo-kalazzi/heros-time License code: KADCEI1QVOASJZFD Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/hartzmann/no-time-to-die License code: X6WJGLXXKIKWLITJ

I explain the future events the Cartels are forcing with their bloody mutilations and murders. The Aztecs are called from Xibalba for the death and blood, Cartels kill so much that they start Chaos, USA starts war with Mexican cartels to control drug trade like DUNE, Dark Fleet controls chaos with Vril weaponry. Both sides slaughter each other with tectonic seismic weaponry, volcanic weaponry, and special forces lightning raids intended to kill the maximum number of people. Expect earthquakes across South America and Mexico and Cartels becoming technologically advanced and openly into human sacrifice. This week we are honored to have Alex Estrada who owns and operates Pale Moon Ranch studio with us at The Musicians Guild. Alex is an engineer, producer and musician. He has made recordings for bands such as Joyce Manor, Touché Amoré, NAILS, and Xibalba among many others. Alex is also a legit vegan cook and walks the talk as he is a strong reference point for great plant based recipes and meals. Alex approaches his musical work and living style with a thoughtfulness and intent that I find carries an energy in a strong and great way; both seriously and with a sense of humor. We talk about Alex growing up with his father being a well known mariachi leading Mariachi Sol De Mexico, how bands can rehearse better, helping music scenes thrive on both a large and small scale, his vegan version of El Pollo Loco, tending to a rural property, excessive mix revisions from bands, preferred approaches to making records and lots more. Terminus is back with an oldschool episode- 4 records of descent into complete madness on the part of your intrepid hosts. This time, the mix is an unusual one, from dissonant black to war metal to elaborate death metal and... sophisticated beatdown hardcore? All these things are different but they're all actually the same thing as you'll come to find out. First off, a mini-review courtesy of The Black Metal Guy featuring Chicago's AVOWD, a dissonant black metal project pulled from the 00s featuring a member of Malthusian Kommand and the ugliest chord voicings you've ever heard. Now for a double dose of EPs from the Indian subcontinent. First up is a new entry from the Kolkata Inner Order in the form of Kaal Nagini, who play heavily death metal inflected war metal which won't be unfamiliar to fans of other KIO bands. Featuring a truly gorked production job, blistering tempos, and a lashing of brutal death, this is sure to please the most deeply deranged among us. In the other corner, the return of Kaal Akuma, whose war-inflected style of death metal has taken a more defined shape in the form of more traditional, Immolation-inspired death metal. While perhaps less obsessively extreme than their last record, the added polish and brilliant riffcraft on display more than makes up for it. Wrapping things up is the return of Vamachara, California beatdown hardcore aficionados coming back with their sophomore full length. Inspired by bands like Xibalba, Knocked Loose, and a host of 00s beatdown, Vamachara feels like the most vicious streetfighting music of two decades ago updated with modern technical extremity. Crushing and rhythmically challenging breakdowns collide headlong into fully unadorned death metal riffs to make for something that bridges the (perhaps nonexistant) gap between the styles with remarkable power and style. 0:00:00 - Intro/AVOWD - AVOWD (Independent) 0:27:54 - Kaal Nagini - Reflected Lights of a Blind God (Iron Bonehead Productions) 0:54:10 - Interlude - Sect Pig - “Master Revealed” fr. In this short but jammed-packed episode, we goof off with some of our regulars and answer emails from Brian, Alexi (a/k/a the "Dude"), MyContactInfo and Kasip. We address a variety of random musings about some new treasury bond ETFs and Simply ETFs, Flight of the Conchords humor, what AI has to say about Medicare Advantage and Medigap, and what to do as a resident alien about a 401k. I can't make these emails up! In Session 111 of DICELORE's BALDUR'S GATE: Eldritch Secrets, the Fools spend another day at the Irlentree estate, complete with an old-fashioned family-round-the-table dinner. But something seems very wrong with Aego. Have the mindflayers---er, banana cream pies---gotten to him? Or is it just Aego-as-usual? Plus, Xibalba tries to read a newspaper!
After rescuing Stedd, the Damned Fools realize they need to address Xibalba's Mindflayer problem (heretofore known as "Banana Cream Pie"). But a return to Aego's manor in the High City turns into a bit of a drama. Can you say, "Daddy Issues"? All this and more in Session 109 of DICELORE's BALDUR'S GATE: Eldritch Secrets!
