With a career spanning several decades, the band has consistently delivered powerful and dynamic music, earning them a dedicated fanbase and critical acclaim within the metal community.Darkest Hour's early years were marked by lineup changes, a common challenge for many bands finding their footing. However, as the lineup solidified, the band began to hone its distinctive sound. The core members, including John Henry (vocals), Mike Schleibaum (guitar), and Ryan Parrish (drums), played pivotal roles in shaping Darkest Hour's identity. The breakthrough for Darkest Hour came with their third studio album, "So Sedated, So Secure" (2001), which showcased their prowess in blending aggressive riffing with melodic hooks. This release marked a turning point, garnering attention and establishing Darkest Hour as a force to be reckoned with in the burgeoning metalcore scene.Continuing to refine their sound, Darkest Hour released "Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation" (2003), a politically charged album that reflected the tumultuous times. This thematic depth added another layer to their music, resonating with fans who appreciated substance alongside the sonic intensity. The release of "Undoing Ruin" (2005) further solidified Darkest Hour's standing in the metalcore scene. This album received widespread acclaim for its technical prowess, fierce energy, and the emotional depth conveyed through Henry's passionate vocal delivery. Songs like "With a Thousand Words to Say But One" became anthems, highlighting the band's ability to craft powerful and memorable compositions.Over the years, Darkest Hour continued to evolve and experiment with their sound. "Deliver Us" (2007) saw the band exploring more diverse musical elements, incorporating clean vocals and expansive song structures. This evolution demonstrated their refusal to be confined by genre boundaries, pushing the limits of what metalcore could encompass. In 2010, Darkest Hour released the aptly titled "The Human Romance," a record that showcased a matured and refined version of their sound. No project is complete without a visual component.  Album covers, show posters, marketing materials...  All of that is a crucial element to every release and campaign.  Jeff Everett (Rockets Are Red, El Jefe Design) is a dude that has been intimately involved in the visual side of music for decades and somehow ONLY gets better with time as he branches out into film and wrestling as well.   Jeff came by to talk about the business side of the music business, the visual side of the art form, the existential crisis moments every artist goes through, pulling your head out of tough spots and so much more. His ability to eloquently describe these things and beautifully illustrate these things is the reason he is always working with bands like The Foo Fighters, Gaslight Anthem, Against Me!, The Bouncing Souls, Jawbreaker, Clutch; wrestlers like Dalton Castle, Danhausen, Luchabros, Jericho, and more; celebrating films like Point Break, Stephen King's IT, Before Sunrise, and more... The dude just does it all and is finally letting us all celebrate the journey in book form. You can pre-oreder and support the book at let-it-bleed.com Buy prints, shirts, posters and more at rockets-are-red.com   Keep up with his online content and more at is instagram:  @rocketsarered   Book Kickstarter kicks off Valentines Day   March 4th - Jeff will be at a Pop Up Gallery Show and Book Discussion at Lost Origins Gallery in Mt Pleasant in DC. Interview by Kris PetersUS metal machine Darkest Hour are set to launch their first Australian tour in over a decade when they touch down for a series of shows starting in Adelaide on February 8.In a career spanning over a quarter of a century Darkest Hour have steadfastly refused to allow labels or trends dictate their music, instead cross-pollinating the metal genres to create a bastardised sound that is unmistakably their own.The band are also putting the finishing touches to their new album, the first since Godless Prophets & the Migrant Flora back in 2017.Guitarist Mike Schleibaum joined HEAVY earlier today to discuss the tour and the history of Darkest Hour. We start by pointing out the fact the band will be doing five shows in five days while here."The thing is, that's kind of how we do it in America," he shrugged. "We just run it out. We're not really good... days off are more dangerous than days on (laughs). Because we just get in a groove and get going. But as soon as we get a day off, and someone wants to climb a mountain or swim all day or get hammered the next day it's impossible. We're gonna be ready to go from day one because we've been trapped up in the studio for a whole month here together - everybody's having a good time - but it's not the same as when you're out there having an adventure. We are looking forward to getting back to the usual what it's like to be in a band rather than being trapped in a room arguing about notes, you know what I mean?"In the full interview Mike discusses the changes in Darkest Hour since they last toured Australia, balancing the setlist to please as many people as possible, what we can expect, the early days of the band and what inspired them, playing a cross section of metal and where it comes from, engineering that sound, the musical changes over the journey, finding your musical identity, work on the new album, their Patreon page, and how to secure your limited meet & greet package.

Jordan Buckley has made me laugh more than most anyone I know... I rarely get to hang with the dude these days, but I can still put on ANY Every Time I Die record and just laugh at how hilariously heavy and unrelenting that band was.  I was always envious of his playing, his energy, and his artistic talents aside from guitar. This is a truly great conversation with Jordan about all things ETID, all this post ETID, all things that pushed and inspired ETID, working with Kurt Ballou, his work with John Taffer, his love of Buthole Surfers, Slayer, and Converge... But, most importantly how the impact of that band's legacy has impacted his life since its demise, how he processed the very public dissolve and what he's done to pick himself back up.  In addition to new music in the works with 3 former ETID dudes, Jordan has launched an insane cameo page that you should check out, and a hub for all of his projects from art to airbnb!   Head over to https://jordanbuckley.xyz/ for all things Jordan.  From Shirts, to original art prints, to Every Time I Die tour posters, and more.  Not a bit of shinfo to be found on that page. Today I am joined by Mike Schleibaum, the guitarist of Darkest Hour and Be Well. For the last 25 years Darkest Hour have played a high energy mix of hardcore punk and heavy metal. After releasing nine studio albums through labels like Victory, E-One, Sumerian, and Southern Lord, the band have decided to go independent for album number ten. While working on that record, the band have also launched a patreon page, where they’ve recently debuted “Live In Lockdown,” a recording of a live stream concert that they used to raise money for the legendary DC venue The Black Cat. I was psyched to have Schleibaum on the podcast to talk about Live in Lockdown, the move to patreon, and his thoughts on Darkest Hour’s impressive catalog. We also couldn't ignore the controversy involving Phil Anselmo and his Nazi salute and "white power" scream at Dimebash; you may have read the statement about the incident from Darkest Hour last week, but Mike elaborates further about what it means for the metal community. (Note: we recorded this episode before Anselmo's apology video, but we got a feeling his sentiment did not change much). Shawn Drover, ex-drummer of Megadeth and Eidolon, joins us to talk about his new band Act of Defiance, whose debut album The Birth and the Burial is out now. We discuss his departure from one of metal's biggest bands, his pairing with former Megadeth guitarist Chris Broderick and why they stuck together, what they were thinking when putting this new group together and why they are most definitely not a supergroup. We discuss the video advertisement Disturbed had to pull after its incendiary imagery came frighteningly true this week with two journalists being murdered in Virginia. Should we be more careful with the way we express our art? Darkest Hour's Mike Schleibaum joins us again to discuss the latest happenings in the political world with another edition of "The Sadist Nation." We cover a lot of ground about the 2016 Presidential candidates and some other political topics that are trending. I.C.S. Vortex takes a break from his many projects and family to guest this week on the MetalSucks Podcast. His new release with Arcturus is a departure from much of what he's done in the past, and we talk about that progression, his experience with an evangelical mother, how he fits his many projects into being a father and husband and his experiences with the volatile situations in Dimmu Borgir (and his subsequent departure from the band). We also give you the first true installment of our new politics segment, "Sadist Nation" with Darkest Hour's Mike Schleibaum. We talk about the separation between church and state and whether or not metalheads can unite under one set of causes, and what it would take to make us all come together and realize the political power we have in the world after so many years of being sidelined.

Mike Schleibaum of Darkest Hour is our guest this week; Axl and Vince try to figure out who got in trouble with the law on the Mayhem tour, how the transition to a new label came to pass and whether or not using electronic gear to change their tuning is cheating or totally legit. Chuck and Godless also rehash the topic of merch and how your band needs to do it better, with prime examples from a recent tour stop with Scale the Summit.
