if this were a real call-in show, an all-too obvious topic for discussion might be "who is the worst live band you've ever seen?" I mean, for there are some all-too obvious candidates (Sump, Juliette Lewis & The Licks, Quiet Company, Ween) however what does it mean if you never thought the band in question was any good to begin with? How can you properly measure a performance if you're already disinclined to like the material or the performers?so maybe the real worst show you've ever seen is someone you otherwise respected or liked who simply shit the bed. Onstage (or in bed). This would be a great topic for this week's show except a) we don't have the technological know-how to  take calls for a prerecorded show and b) I really cannot stand the sound of anyone else's voice besides my own. SO YOU'RE JUST GONNA HAVE TO HASH IT OUT IN THE COMMENTS (again). (above : Anti-Nowhere League, best set I ever saw by a genuinely awful band - potential topic for a future episode)

Our latest Live Music & Me guest was the journalist, DJ and radio presenter Jim Gellatly, who was kind enough to give us an hour from his busy schedule. Jim could remember what his first 2 gigs were ( but not in which order). Tbf, they were both belters. He also regaled us with the time he patched a Bon Jovi gig to go and see Take That ( good decision!) , having a ticket to see Nirvana but not seeing them, and also being offered £800 for his U2 ticket ( and Jason Donavan was in that chat somewhere too). Oh, and also the small matter of moshing at The Sex Pistols gig for all of one song - AND being the first guest to mention the Anti Nowhere League. We guessed Jim would be good company - and we weren't wrong. Thanks Jim - top man. PS Shout out to Stephen Cameron from Into Creative for the super cool backdrop screen image.

Season 6 Episode 11 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 16 March 2023.  Badlands with Jake E. Lee and the late Ray Gillan got us out the blocks with a track called ‘Devil's Stomp'.  From there we had some more devils courtesy of Chickenfoot and a track called ‘Different Devil' off Chickenfoot III.  It was pretty much full-bore rock and roll for the first hour with bands like Godsmack, Stone Sour, and Marilyn Manson.  In particular, Stone Sour with ‘Do Me a Favour' and Godsmack off their brand new album Lighting Up The Sky and a track called “Red White and Blue made a good pairing.   By request from Ash a brand new listener we had Shinedown with Breaking Inside' and then Rival Sons with ‘Burn Down Los Angeles'.  From there is went a bit off the rails and served as a reminder that TSORR is not for young children as demonstrated by, Buckcherry's ‘Somebody F*****d With Me', and Metallica's cover of The Anti Nowhere League's infamous  'So What'.  Then we went back to TSORR roots with ‘Samurai' off Assault Attack from The Michael Schenker Group and then a track from Scorpions which made it a Schenker family affair.  Pretty much the only time you can get the Schenker bros together is if you play their songs back-to-back.  Sad ☹. For this week's Ultimate Challenge, we looked at 1987:  the four albums featured were from Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Guns ‘n Roses, and Whitesnake.  We had a great 4-minute interview with Ryno Theron, vocalist and guitarist from Truth Decayed, and followed this by we playing their brand-new track ‘Death By Design'.  It was a hell of a busy show;  we played more SA music with a brand-new track from Jack Hammer Band who are flying the flag for our beloved Piet Botha, then Blue Scream featuring my good friend Roger Kaye on vocals along with Robin Gallagher and Tully McCully.  This week's Immortals was 13 min long, check it out, ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner' off Powerslave sounded amazing.  Iron Maiden are something else.  I recall hearing Phil Wright play the whole track back in 1984 when the album was released.  We wrapped up with Jethro Tull's Aqualung and Volbeat's ‘Shotgun Blues', especially for Ian and Hardus, and said cheers with Bloodstone by the mighty Judas Priest.     Artists featured:  Badlands, Chickenfoot, Cinderella, Type O Negative, Marilyn Manson, Stone Sour, Godsmack, L.A. Guns, Rival Sons, Shinedown, Buckcherry, Metallica, Ramones, Michael Schenker Group, Scorpions, Dio, Girish and the Chronicles, Dead City Ruins, Danny Worsnop, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Guns ‘n' Roses, Whitesnake, Truth Decayed, Frank Zappa, Blue Scream, Jack Hammer Band, Sheryl Crow, Iron Maiden, Jethro Tull, Volbeat, Judas Priest.        The Story of Rock and Roll. HEAVY Music Interviews
Taking Away The Stigma Surrounding Tribute Bands With CHOP SUEY, THE ALL-STAR UK TRIBUTE TO SYSTEM OF A DOWN

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 13, 2023 34:32

Interview by Kris PetersOne can question the existence of tribute bands on the musical landscape, but there is no denying the impact they have had on music in general over the last five years in particular. They provide an affordable option for fans to hear the music of their favourite bands - and often at places and venues that the actual band cannot or will not visit.Once the whole stigma of a band playing someone else's music can be cast aside the equation becomes much simpler, but love them or hate them, tribute bands are a growing outlet for live events. And one of the best currently doing the rounds is Chop Suey, the worlds biggest System Of A Down Tribute, also known as the UK All Star Tribute To System Of A Down.Featuring the undeniable talents of Martin Jackson (vocals, Confyde), Sam Totman (bass, Dragonforce), Tommy Hunt (guitar, Anti-Nowhere League) and Andre Joyzi (drums, Breed 77), Chop Suey certainly has the pedigree for success, but, more importantly, they have the attitude and drive to elevate the band from one of a large number of tribute acts to one of the best. After completing a successful run of shows last year, Chop Suey have ramped things up in 2023, already announcing two large scale tours with another set to be announced n the coming weeks. The shows will see Chop Suey play everywhere from larger cities and venues to more out of the way areas, with the focus on not only sharing their love of the music from System Of A Down, but doing so in a way that allows more of their own personalities and abilities shine through than most tribute acts allow.HEAVY caught up with all four band members to find out the ins and outs of being in a tribute band, starting with what to expect from a Chop Suey performance."Just a real high energy show," Jackson promised. "A proper party basically. Just full bore, making sure everyone's having a good time, interacting with the crowd, doing all the cool stuff like opening up the wall of death and getting people to bounce and sing along. It's meant to be one great big party and a real ebb and flow of all the different music that System Of A Down does."The majority of tribute bands go to great lengths to emulate the band they are representing, dressing to play the part and studying various band members movements and mannerisms, but according to Chop Suey they operate in almost opposite fashion."I think it's mostly our own show to be honest" Joyzi measured. "I remember seeing System Of A Down when I was young and they were young - around 2004 - and it was an incredible show. The energy they had matched the songs and it was just a full energy show. It was amazing. Sadly, I don't think System Of A Down deliver the same energy any more for whatever reason but it seems that the energy side of it seems to have been neglected by the real band itself. We're younger (laughs), and we like the music and we like playing live. We have fun and people can see that and feel that on stage. Obviously, I work with Dragonforce as does Sam, and from that we have bigger ideas for production for a proper, entertaining show. That's why when Sam came in he helped a lot. It's nothing to do with a real System Of A Down show. We really do our own thing. We play the songs our own way. Martin is an incredible singer and he stays loyal as much as possible to System Of A Down but what we do, is do it our own way, which is a bit more metal to be honest."In the full interview we talk more about the live show, putting their own spin on things and how it works, breaking the stigma attached to tribute bands, choosing the set list, both upcoming tours and the yet to be announced one, their vision for Chop Suey, what the members get out of playing in a tribute band they might not in their original outfits, the formation of Chop Suey and why, future plans and more.

S6E10 kicked off live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 9 Mar 2023.  It was great to be back in Benoni after last week's sojourn to Clarens and we celebrated hard.  First up was Motörhead and a track off Inferno called ‘In the Year of the Wolf'.  From there some classic Led Zep and a track by Michael Monroe co-written by Lemmy called 'The Fine Art of Debauchery'.  We had some Def Leppard and some Black Sabbath to keep the big names in the mix and then turned left into the world of Stoner Rock and Queens of the Stone Age.   From there we hit some USA Punk with Ramones and The Distillers. This week's elevator speech came from a quick chat I had with Chris Kennedy of Punkfontein and he told us about the new track being released called ‘The Leviathan', we played it, and it's fully cool.  We stayed in that zone with Blink 182 and The Killers with a track off Sam's Town called This River Is Wild.  I vote The Killers the band most in need of a slap round the head.  Such a good album and then nothing.  From there it was back to ‘80s metal courtesy of W.A.S.P. and a track called ‘The Rock Rolls On'.   This week's Immortals was a track by James Reyne featuring a wailing emotionally charged solo by Jef Scott and especially dedicated to my mate Fanie Marais who loved this album and would have been 72 this week. RIP buddy.  From there we heard a brand new track from Bily Squier who, as far as I know, hasn't released anything for 25 years.  The track is called ‘Harder On A Woman' and it sounds just like you would expect, well done Billy, welcome back.  The Ultimate Challenge this week looked at 4 albums from 2005.  Avenged Sevenfold – City of Evil, Foo Fighter – In Your Honor, System of a Down – Violent Pornography, and Audioslave - Out of Exile.  Once again there was no clear winner and everyone changed their minds at least once.  The brand new track by Deadline called 'My Sweet apocalypse' is really good, over 7 min long it is one of the best tracks these SA metal giants have released.  We ended with Iron Maiden and The Halo Effect with tracks called 'Tears of a Clown' and 'Gateways'.  Artists Featured: Motörhead, Led Zeppelin, Michael Monroe, Hell Fire, Def Leppard, Black Sabbath, Queens of the Stone Age, The Distillers, Ramones, Metallica, Crossbone Skully, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Ugly Kid Joe, Airbourne, Punkfontein (Feat Meel Vignetting), Blink 182, The Killers, W.A.S.P., Sebastian Bach, Sophie Lloyd (Feat Matthew K. Heafy), James Reyne, System of a Down, Foo Fighters, Audioslave, Avenged Sevenfold, Dave Hause, Bush, Anti-Nowhere League, Iggy Pop, Deadline, Iron Maiden, The Halo Effect.  The Story of Rock and Roll. Episode 14 of season 5 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 7 April 2022.  For the first time we clocked in with 39 tracks.  The show was light on '70's classic rock, blues and SA content for some reason.   There just seemed not to be enough time.  Things just work out that way sometimes, very little of TSORR is planned.  The show did showcase a track called 'South' off the new EP Vocabular Vacation from Deangersmith.  It made sense to feature his work in Odyssey while we were at it.  We also took in a bit of Agro and a new band out of Manchester called Heavy Sentence.  These guys are flying the flag for what may well become the NWOBHM II.  Lets hope.  The variation you have come to expect on the show was in evidence:  UK punk from Anti-Nowhere League, The Stranglers and The Jam, heavy stuff from Arch Enemy, Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, and In Flames.  Southern Rock from Kid Rock and Black Stone Cherry, and then lesser-known metal from Tygers of Pan Tang, and Tokyo Blade.  There's plenty to get your teeth into, softer ballads from Lita Ford and The Pretty Reckless and then once again some rap / metal in a track called 'Gaddaar' by a band from India called Bloodywood.  Artists featured:  The Answer, The Quireboys, Great White, Guns ‘n' Roses, Avenged Sevenfold, Massive Wagons, Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, Heavy Sentence, Agro, Queensrÿche, Tesla, The Stranglers, The Jam, Anti-Nowhere League, Transvision Vamp, The Donna's, Arch Enemy, In Flames, Kid Rock, Black Stone Cherry, Greta Van Fleet, Jimmy Barnes, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Tygers of Pan Tang, Tokyo Blade, The Offspring, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Deangersmith, Odyssey, Accept, Avenged Sevenfold, Megadeth, Metallica, Halford, Lita Ford, The Pretty Reckless, Bloodywood, Slayer

Episode 17 of season 4 was recorded while I was away on a Guitar Weekend in Clarans with Dan Patlansky.  there are quite a few references to Dan and to the band I jam with, the amazing Bunk Girls Motorcycle Club as a result.  There wasn't a lot of time for getting things to match up and flow so this show is pretty rough and ready.  It does of course have the sort of tracks you would expect from TSORR.  We started with Korn, which is something different, it just had the right energy.   There was quite a bit of '80s metal, Tesla, slaughter, Y&T, Tokyo Blade, and even Stryper, remember them?  To hell With The Devil  was the top-selling Christian Metal album for about 15 years.  We took a listen to the title track.  We had the usual fare, ACDC, Gun 'n' Roses, Airbourne, Deep Purple, that sort of thing but we also checked out Anto-Nowhere League, The Wildhearts, and Paradox.  Pantera and Parkway Drive took care of the heavy.  SA stuff courtesy of Dan Patlansky, Government Car and 12th Avenue and new stuff courtesy of Greta Van Fleet, Alice Cooper and The Offspring.  Artists featured:  Korn, Y&T, The Cult, Bullets & Octane, Adrenaline Mob, The Lazys, Airbourne, Deep Purple, Guns 'n' Roses, ACDC, Crawl, Paradox, George Thorogood & the Destroyers, ZZ Top, Alice in Chains, My Chemical Romance, Coheed & Cambria, Yngwie Malmsteen, Greta Van Fleet, Alice Cooper, The Offspring, The Wildhearts, Anti-Nowhere League, Stryper, Tokyo Blade, Pop Evil, Kiss, 12th Avenue, Government Car, Pantera, Parkway Drive, Dave Hause, Tesla, Hanoi Rocks, Slaughter, Dan Patlansky, Dire Straits, Nickelback

TSORR Season 3 Episode 13 got off to a not so great start on 12 Nov 2020.  It's funny because I am reading Matthew McConaughey's book Greenlights and that is exactly what I didn't get, the show said ‘connected' but no green light so I had to start again.  You won't hear that because I have cut it out but I'm just telling you for interest sake and to explain the reference to an aborted start.  After that, it was plain sailing all the way other than some niggle with the microphone clipping a bit, but it's only on the first two bits of chatter.     The show was great, we heard a lot of good SA rock with the Burning and L.A. Cobra showing that SA Rock is alive and kicking.  Later on, we took a listen to The Fismits, featuring Rebel Rock Radio's very own Mark Biaggio on guitar and vocals with a track called ‘Questions'.  We also heard The Color Blew and toward the end of the show Johnathan Martin (happy birthday brother) and SA Metal maniacs Deadline.  The guitar work in Deadline is just so perfect, love those solo's, I referred to the album as 'Cathedral' instead of Cathedral Point so apologies for that guys.  We had Danko Jones, Seether, Marilyn Manson, and an absolutely fantastic track by The Pretty Reckless.  We played a few songs for America (Ugly Kid Joe and Motörhead)  because, I am so grateful to the US for all the amazing music over the last 50 years, it doesn't really matter who runs it as long as the world gets its rock and roll.   One of the highlights of the show for me was Queen with 'The Prophets Song' off A Night at the Opera.  I made mention of the fact that it doesn't get a look in because of that other long song on the album but it's well deserving of some airtime.  It still sounds fantastic 45 years later.  The other highlight was having a good friend listening in and playing a couple of road-related tracks (Buckcherry's 'Ridin'' and Audioslave's 'I Am the Highway')  in memory of some of the great music we have listened to on roads around the country.  These are the type of songs that form the backbone of The Story of Rock and Roll.  'You Make Me Want To Die' by The Pretty Reckless and 'Little Secret' by Black Country Communion both stood out as did show opener 'Cold Sweat' by Thin Lizzy.     Artists featured:  Seether, Mötley Crüe, Motörhead, Deadline, Linkin Park, Van Halen, Ugly Kid Joe, The Burning, Queen, Def Leppard, Black Country Communion, UFO, The Ramones, Audioslave, The Temperance Movement, Pearl Jam, L.A. Cobra, The Fismits, Edguy, Buckcherry, Thin Lizzy, Marilyn Manson, Mick Jagger & Dave Stewart, Anti-Nowhere League, The Color Blew, Johnathan Martin, The Pretty Reckless, Whitesnake, Danko Jones, Guns ‘n' Roses, Judas Priest, Bush, Iron Maiden, Warren Zevon, Leslie West

Season 3 Episode 9 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show aired at 7 pm on 15 October 2020.  It had a rocky start so be warned, the show opens with Van Halen and Dreams because I am still sad about Eddie, it is followed By ACDC, and then on the 3rd tack it goes soft for about a minute DO NOT crank up the volume because it comes back to full volume as soon as I realise the levels we not right.  After that everything is fine.  Start-up blues we call it.  We check out some Twisted Sister and some Volbeat and a couple of lesser-known bands like Austin Gold, Axel Rudi Pell, Bullets & Octane, and The Lazy's.  The Lazy's out of Aus are a great band, check them out.  I played another track off the Brendan O'Brien remix of Pearl Jam's Ten and it sounds fantastic, check out the guitars in that. The brand new EP from Fokofpolisiekar got an airing and it's great.  The highlight of the show for me was an old track by No Friends of Harry called Make My Day, requested but a listener who said it makes him want to down a warm Black Label quart and attack your neighbours with an empty bottle.  I understood the moment I played it :-).  There was a lot of good stuff on the show so best you just listen to it, but remember not to adjust for the low volume in the beginning.Artists featured:  Temple of the Dog, Hinder, The Rolling Stones, WASP, Twisted Sister, Judas Priest, Kiss, Axel Rudi Pell, Bullets & Octane, Volbeat, Mötley Crüe, Iron Maiden, Conil, The Uninvited, Marilyn Manson, Pearl Jam, Jerry Cantrel, ACDC, Great White, No Friends of Harry, The Cult, Joan Jett, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Austin Gold, Megadeth, The Anti-Nowhere League, The Temperance Movement, Phil Campbell, The Lazy''s, Herman Frank, Fokofpolisiekar, Rammstein, John Cougar, Backyard Babies  & Jet

50 years after it was first recorded, Ralph McTell and others discuss a song that was written for a heroin addict, became an anthem against homelessness, and transcended the folk genre to become an enduring classic. Ralph McTell says he’s thought constantly about the “blip in my graph” that is Streets of London. People say to him “50 years. One hit. You think you’d have given up by now”. But, Ralph says, that’s not why he writes songs. And, of course, he’s written many. Many that he considers far better than Streets of London. But this remains his best known, best loved, and most played track. It was first recorded 50 years ago, in 1969, for his album Spiral Staircase although it wasn’t released as a single until 1974. Taking part in Soul Music, alongside Ralph, with their stories and memories connected to Streets of London, are: Jerry Playle, a music producer. His first ever public performance as a teenage guitarist was of Streets of London. The guitar part went well, but when he opened his mouth to sing, he realised - to his horror - that he couldn't... Gwen Ever, a DJ. He became homeless in the 1980s. It’s the unlikely punk version of Streets of London by the Anti Nowhere League that reminds him of this time. Maria Bentley-Dingwall, the daughter of Iris Bentley. Iris was the sister of Derek Bentley who was hanged for a murder he did not commit. Iris spent her life campaigning for his conviction to be quashed. Ralph McTell grew up knowing this story, became a friend of the family, wrote a song about the case, and sang Streets of London at Iris Bentley’s funeral. Producer: Karen Gregor

ANTI-NOWHERE LEAGUE. “SO WHAT?” Anti-Nowhere League vocalist Animal tells about the origin of the wonderfully outrageous lyrics to the English punk legends’ best known song; his background as an outlaw biker; the U.K. punk scene of the 1980s; getting thrown off Top of the Pops; how performing with Metallica at Wembley in 1992 resurrected the band; behind-the-scenes of his visit to San Francisco for the Metallica 30th anniversary shows; his forthcoming autobiography; and much more. Music: Anti-Nowhere League, "So What?" SpeakNDestroy.com has details about our guests, plus deep dives into Metallica history, with flyers, photos, YouTube video playlists, and more. The guys blast a bunch of awesome songs and simultaneously tip their hat to the good guys in law enforcement with Crankin the Law - Ep258. In this hour-plus block of rock, your hosts spin killer law-related tracks from the likes of Helloween, X-Cops, Hardcore Superstar, Motorhead, Saxon, Suicidal Tendencies, Soundgarden, Anthrax, Anti-Nowhere League, and Stryper. Crankin the Law They also discuss law enforcement and its effect on society and rock n' roll. We hope you enjoy Crankin the Law - Ep258 and SHARE with a friend! iTunes Review: Unbe-friggin'believable!!! by tjcarolina on Sep 21, 2016 Rating: ★★★★★ Holy S#@T!!! Great Episode this week. "Rare Hair" was killer. This week was just phenomenal as is every week. Even when they banter incessantly about KISS they are still entertaining and informative. Never seems to disappoint. Makes me look forward to every upcoming week to get the new episodes!! They constantly remind us that there are more to the bands we love beside "The Hits"! Rare Hair got down to the meat and potatoes of why we love the bands we do. The Hits brought us the band, Rare Hair showed is why they are still in our hearts. Keep the flag flying guys!!!
