The Stage Play is about 6 African American men, (godbrothers), who haveformed a family-like bond over the years and still routinely meet to catch up on life.Led by “Pops”, who mentored the other men when they were teenagers at acommunity center, the men usually gather to cook, sing, and share a uniquebrotherhood. Despite difficult pasts, each man is successful in his own right... lawyer, therapist, music producer, CEO, and plastic surgeon. But when they enter this safespace as “godguys”, sometimes, the pain of the little boys resurfaces. Theirconversations reveal deep wounds that deal with such topics as abuse, mental healthissues, abandonment, and addiction, topics not often talked about openly inthe African American community, especially among men. The purpose of the play is toshare experiences of African American males that stimulate dialogue and encouragehealing. After 3 sold-out Atlanta shows in October 2023, the show is back by populardemand with a new cast but the same energy and impact.June 17-18, 2023, at 7 Stages Theatre,Little Five Points, Atlanta, GA
Updated: 2:55 p.m. St. Cloud-based concert pianist Mark Ochu is looking forward to an eclectic evening by vocal and musical trio Partly Tame, presented by the Granite City Folk Society. The trio consists of the group's founder Mariénne Kreitlow, violinist Cristina Seaborn and Susan Schleper, vocals. “All three musicians are authentic performers … comfortable in multiple genres ranging from classical to folk, to slap stick comedy, to the introspective and spiritual,” Ochu said, adding that he never knows quite what will be on the program. He said Kreitlow, a composer, is an intuitive performer, shifting to incorporate poetry, jazz improv, and more as the mood of the show requires. The one-night show starts at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Cloud. Art lover Doris Rubenstein of Richfield is excited that after several difficult years, the Artistry Theater and Visual Arts is in full swing. This week galleries will feature visual art shows by local artists, which Rubenstein says makes March a good time to discover or rediscover the Bloomington Center for the Arts. Landscape photography by Marc Ye of Lakeville, whose subjects and photo shoots range all over the world, opens his fine art show in the Atrium Gallery. An artist reception Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. is free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through April 23. In the Inez Greenberg Gallery, Roshan Ganu, Chris Rackley and John Swartwout's show uses art made both by hand and through technology to explore memory. Their show, “Hyper Memory,” runs through April 7. Artistry also helped mount an exhibit at Confluence Gallery, located at the Minnesota Valley Wildlife Refuge, of the wildlife paintings by Kat Corrigan. “Wild and Precious Life” runs through April 5. Sarah Prindiville, director of fine arts in the Robbinsdale public schools, recommends “Once on This Island, Jr.” It's a 60-minute version of the Broadway musical packed with songs created by the same music-and-lyric team behind “Seussical!” and “Ragtime.” Set in Haiti, it's the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl, who falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. Gods and goddesses are part of the story about class, culture, and the power of love. The production at Stages Theatre in Hopkins is directed and choreographed by Twin Cities theater-maker Kelli Foster Warder. Prindiville says students, some from her district, are part of the ensemble. “Once on This Island, Jr.” runs March 3 though March 19 and is recommended for ages 7 and up. Correction: A previous version misstated where an exhibit connected to the Bloomington Center for the Arts was taking place. The above version has been updated.
Community Activist Ian Haddock -- Stages production "Cullud Wattah" -- Legendary DJ JD ArnoldFirst we speak with LGBT community activist Ian Haddock about the Normal Anomaly Initiative and his work in the community. Stages Theatre production "Plumsugah:The Rise of Lauren Anderson" Director and ChoreographerWe speak with director, Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton of the Stages Theatre production of "Plumsugah:The Rise of Lauren Anderson". This innovative new work blends spoken word, dance, music, and theater for a vivid and intimate look into Lauren Anderson's rise to ballet royalty and her eventual triumphant rise to accept her authentic self. In 1990, Lauren Anderson became one of the first Black principal ballerinas of a major ballet company when she ascended to Principal Dancer of the Houston Ballet. Unknown to her adoring audiences, she brought with her on stage the weight of her own tumultuous relationships, abuse, and battles with addiction. In PLUMSHUGA , you'll share a conversation with Lauren at home, where she breaks the fourth wall to discuss her greatest trials and successes by reliving them in memories painted by music and dance. This is Lauren Anderson's story in her words, for the first time ever.Guest: Deborah Moutonhttps://stageshouston.comThen we speak Harrison Homer-Guy, activist and choreographer of Plumsugah about his work on this production and his work in the community. A leader in Houston's Black queer community since 2005, Guy was no stranger to being at the helm of an LGBTQ-focused organization. To those who knew him, his work, and his community involvement, there was no question of what he was capable of doing or what he had already accomplished. But the Mayor's Board presented a new challenge for Guy—and the community was watching closely. What transpired over the next three years was sincere, honest, and inspiring leadership. Guy also is behind the creation of Urban Souls, In the Beginning History: Urban Souls Dance Company (USDC) grew from a solo performed by founding artistic director Harrison Guy at the city-wide dance festival Dance Houston on July 30, 2004. Harrison decided to explore his potential for leadership and choreography and began teaching a free modern dance class on Sundays at Barnevelder Movement Arts Complex. “There’s a unique dynamic going on in the music of Asheville, North Carolina singer/songwriter Kathryn O’Shea. As a writer, her songs tend toward the confessional or autobiographical, the type we most often hear accompanied by an acoustic guitar. But O’Shea’s husky, low-toned moan is buoyed instead by her skeletal banjo playing.”-The Greenville JournalKnown best for her hauntingly poignant lyricism and masterful vocal play, Kathryn has been featured by Sofar Sounds, WPVM Radio, WNC Original Music Podcast, and more. Last fall, she opened for the internationally renowned Los Angeles-based artist Terra Naomi at 7 Stages Theatre in Atlanta, then moved home shortly after and placed 2nd overall in the 11th annual Brown Bag Songwriter’s Competition at The Asheville Music Hall. Kathryn is currently recording her debut studio EP with M.G. O'Shea, a talented audio engineer who just so happens to be her big brother. Last summer, the two worked together to produce Kathryn's debut single, “Snow."

On this episode of Talking Late Night, Max interviews Tara Ochs, a performer, improviser, writer of her own one-woman show "White Woman in Progress," and actress in the critically-acclaimed movie "Selma." Tara realized her love for performing at a young age when she would reenact Saturday Night Live sketches for her church. When she went to college at Florida State University, she got involved with the Wham-O Players (the group who would later form Dad's Garage Theatre Company). After graduating, Tara moved to Atlanta to pursue a career in theatre and comedy (and also to improvise with Dad's!). She's performed all over (Los Angeles, London, Berlin, the Ocean) with a lot of different people (Damon Wayan's "The Underground," ComedySportz LA, ACME Comedy Theatre, London TheatreSports, Second City). Tara also acted in the movie "Selma," playing the role of Viola Liuzzo. This role led her to write her one-woman show entitled "White Woman in Progress," which ran in early 2017 at 7 Stages Theatre in Atlanta. You can find Tara performing and teaching regularly at Dad's Garage, follow her on Twitter, and check her out as VP of Development over at Picture It Productions! Thank you for tuning in!
