Send us a textErnest Hemingway's life was a testament to his belief in living authentically and drawing from rich, personal experience for his writing. His three primary homes in Key West, Havana, and Ketchum were more than just residences; they were essential backdrops and sources of inspiration for his work, each intrinsically linked to his lifestyle and creativity. Unifying these locales, and a symbol of his deep connection to the sea, was his beloved fishing boat, the Pilar. In Key West, Florida (his home during the 1930s), Hemingway found a laid-back, "bohemian" atmosphere that fostered a disciplined writing routine in the mornings and deep-sea fishing adventures in the afternoons with local friends, later dubbed the "Key West Mob". The house on Whitehead Street, a National Historic Landmark, provided a stable base where he wrote works like To Have and Have Not and numerous short stories. His time in Key West served as a gateway to Havana, Cuba, where he eventually moved and lived for over two decades, longer than anywhere else. His home there, Finca Vigía (Lookout Farm), offered the quiet and space where he wrote some of his most celebrated work, including For Whom the Bell Tolls and the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Old Man and the Sea. It was from the nearby village of Cojimar that he and his captain, Gregorio Fuentes, would set out on the Pilar. The 38-foot custom Wheeler yacht, the Pilar, was a constant companion for 27 years, serving as an escape from the pressures of fame and the setting for big-game fishing exploits that earned him a reputation as a founder of sportfishing. The boat was a personal and literary anchor, its name a nickname for his second wife Pauline and a character in For Whom the Bell Tolls. It became a literal and figurative vessel that carried him to the experiences he translated into raw, real stories. Finally, Ketchum, Idaho, became his autumn retreat and final home in the late 1950s, after planning to leave Cuba amidst political tensions. In the rugged landscape of Idaho, he hunted and fished the rivers and plains, finding a different kind of solace. It was here, struggling with deteriorating health and depression, that he ultimately ended his life in 1961, leaving behind a legacy deeply tied to the physical locations that shaped his life and literature. When Ernest Hemingway was interviewed by George Plimpton in 1958, he listed Johann Sebastian Bach fourth among those forebears he learned the most from. “I should think,” he told Plimpton, “what one learns from composers and from the study of harmony and counterpoint would be obvious.” It isn't. So, to help us understand how Bach influenced Hemingway's writing – in particular the first page of A Farewell to Arms – we welcome organist and Bach scholar, David Yearsley. With an expert to guide us, we explore Bach's biography and connections between these two artistic titans, discussing which of Bach's works Hemingway responded to most powerfully and how the music of “Mr. Johann” finds its way into Hemingway's WWI novel as well as other writings, such as To Have and Have Not. We are also privileged that David Yearsley agreed to play some Bach for us to illustrate counterpoint and other related ideas, so we hope you enjoy this special show!

Throughout the 1930s, Ernest Hemingway was in the public eye as a journalist, short story writer, activist, and one of the most famous writers on the planet. But his 1937 novel To Have and Have Not fell flat, and critics wondered if the Hemingway who could write a novel on the level of The Sun Also Rises (1926) or A Farewell to Arms (1929) still existed. All that changed with the publication in 1940 of For Whom the Bell Tolls. Widely read and widely acclaimed, the story of the idealist Robert Jordan in the Spanish Civil War has long been admired (and at times ridiculed) for its depiction of military heroism and wartime romance. But in spite of the criticism that continues to swirl around the novel, its prominence as one of the indispensable masterpieces of war literature has never been in doubt. In this episode, Jacke talks to editor Alex Vernon about his line-by-line analysis of For Whom the Bell Tolls for the Reading Hemingway series. PLUS Sandra Spanier (series editor of the Letters of Ernest Hemingway project) stops by to discuss her choice for the last book she will ever read. Howard Hawks's To Have and Have Not (1944) is more Hollywood than Hemingway–something for which we should all be grateful. The film is a wonderful example–perhaps the best–of onscreen chemistry and remains wildly entertaining even aside from the onscreen courtship of Bogart and Bacall. Join us as we talk about banter as a tool of seduction, the ways in which films let us “borrow the nature” of their actors, how To Have and Have Not feels like Casablanca II, and if Howard Hawks has an odd obsession with Hoagy Carmichael. In this episode, Dan mentions William J. Mann's recent book Bogie and Bacall, a terrific dual biography of the stars. You can hear Dan's interview of the author here. We put so much emphasis on seeing the scale go down, our clothes fitting better, inches lost from our waists, changes to our progress pictures, that we skip over maintenance as a win. When was the last time you CELEBRATED the scale NOT moving? Probably never--yet, the whole reason you're looking to lose weight in the first place? It's because you HAVE NOT successfully maintained your weight. In this week's solo episode, we're changing that narrative. Make this the summer you learn to navigate a busy social calendar, while feeling confident on the beach and by the pool. The cast shifted with the only continuing characters being Aunt Jenny and announcer Dan Seymour, who dropped in each day to hear her tale.

Unlike the mid-40s film that first brought us Bogie and Bacall, The Breaking Point is a relatively faithful adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s story, To Have and Have Not. This one stars John Garfield (in one of his final films) and Patricia Neal. Michael Curtiz directs, but if that suggests a routine Warner Bothers potboiler (I love those) it is not. Garfield is a boat captain talked into doing some smuggling. There’s a love triangle and an ending that’ll just wrench you. Shelly Brisbin with Randy Dotinga and Nathan Alderman.

Jim Rutledge and Matt Hamilton begin Thursday's show by reacting to the CONTROVERSIAL photo of Matt LaFleur sitting courtside alongside Bears head coach Matt Eberflus at last night's Marquette game. The Matts exert some ultimate dad energy and not a lotta head-coach vibes in the photo, so Jim and Matt joke about what it looks like these two NFL HCs do for a living (wrong answers only). They review some of the hilarious takes from fans on Twitter and the Talk/Text line and give their own interpretations. They also ask which Matt's got the most swag: LaFleur, Eberflus or Hamilton. Jim and Matt get into some more serious sports conversation by reacting to former Badgers AD, and certainly not dead, Barry Alvarez's appearance on Wilde & Tausch this morning, where he said that NIL is ruining the sport of college football as we know it. Jim gives the take that it's actually the transfer portal that's ruining college football, while Matt asks to give the power structure of college football more time to fix this issue. They also discover a possible solution, saying that the "Have" programs should pay a transfer fee if they every poach a player in the portal from one of the "Have Not" programs. They also feature the High Life Dive Bar of the Week: Wilson's Bar on Atwood!

Now that awards season is underway in Hollywood – Oscar nominations were announced Tuesday – our spotlight will be on movie and TV directors with Indiana connections. The filmmakers range from directors of movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood such as the holiday classic "Miracle on 34th Street" (1947) and "To Have and Have Not" (1944) to popular hits like "The Amazing Spiderman" (2012). "Miracle on 34th Street" was directed by George Seaton (1911-1979), who was born in South Bend. Although the movie has become a Christmas classic, it was not initially released during the holiday season and was not promoted with yuletide as a focus. Nelson's guest, Dan O'Brien, a screenwriter and former TV sportscaster based in Greenwood, will explain why. In addition to being a director, George Seaton was a screenwriter and won an Oscar for his screenplay for "Miracle on 34th Street". He also won an Oscar for his screenplay for "The Country Girl" (1954) starring Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby; Seaton directed that movie as well. Other movie directors we will spotlight include Howard Hawks (1896-1977), whose ancestors helped found Goshen, Ind., where he was born. Although Hawks primarily is remembered as a director of Westerns (several starred John Wayne, including "Red River" and "Rio Bravo"), Hawks was known for his versatility. His other hits include "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953) starring Marilyn Monroe as well as "To Have and Have Not" (1944) that teamed Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall for the first time.

The women of NXT took over this entire special edition of NXT. Good for them. We had 5 women's matches on this card, and new champions were crowned! The news segment is back and we are going to cover the WWE contracts that HAVE NOT been renewed yet and some of them are really BIG NAMES.
Big screen tough guy Sheldon Leonard went from cutting a menacing figure in To Have and Have Not and It's a Wonderful Life to producing classic TV sitcoms like The Andy Griffith Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show. In three old time radio thrillers, he'll show off his acting chops, first as a hired killer who's looking for a friend in "Feast of the Furies" (originally aired on CBS on July 11, 1946). We'll also hear him co-starring with Rosalind Russell in "When the Bough Breaks" (originally aired on CBS on May 3, 1951) and Jack Benny in "The Face is Familiar" (originally aired on CBS on January 18, 1954). Plus he shows off his lighter side as a proud papa of a safecracker in "Butch Minds the Baby" from The Damon Runyon Theatre.

On January 6th, 1949 Lauren Bacall gave birth to their first child, Stephen Humphrey Bogart, named in honor of his character in To Have and Have Not. Meanwhile Bogart made Knock on Any Door and Tokyo Joe for his Santana Productions company. Both were moderately panned by critics. In 1950 he made Chain Lightning for Warner Brothers and In A Lonely Place for Santana. In A Lonely Place sees Bogart star as Dixon Steele, a troubled, violence-prone screenwriter suspected of murder. Gloria Grahame co-stars as Laurel Gray, his neighbor who soon falls for Dix. The film is considered among Bogart's best and perhaps a character with personality traits most like the real man. It was among a trio of films released that year, along with Sunset Boulevard and All About Eve, which comment on the dark side of Hollywood. Simultaneously, Bogart and Bacall looked for a vehicle on radio for their talents. Santana Productions partnered with the Frederic W. Ziv Company to develop a series called Bold Venture. It would be written by Morton Fine and David Friedkin, who famously wrote for Broadway is My Beat and Crime Classics. Bogart had long interest in starring in his own series, but had resisted due to the constraints of live radio. By 1950, due to widespread transcription, that was no longer an issue. He could do the show in takes and have music and sound effects added later. Three or four shows a week could be done, leaving Bogart and Bacall free for the rest of the year. Bogart plays Slate Shannon, hotel owner and owner of a boat called the "Bold Venture." Bacall, plays Sailor Duval, and Jester Hairson plays calypso singer King Moses. Shannon, based out of Havana, is always ready to rescue a friend in need or hunt down an enemy. Seventy-eight thirty minute shows were produced. The first show aired on March 26th, 1951. The Ziv Company distributed the series, putting up twelve-thousand dollars per episode. Bogart and Bacall were each paid four-thousand-dollars per show. Four-hundred twenty-three stations bought the series, paying weekly fees to Ziv ranging from fifteen dollars for small stations to seven-hundred-fifty dollars for big ones. Newsweek noted that although the series was set in Havana, it could just have easily been in Casablanca. While the series was first airing, the Bogarts were in Africa. Humphrey was set to star opposite Kathryn Hepburn in The African Queen.
Bogart and Bacall moved into a white brick mansion in Holmby Hills, and he bought a fifty-five foot yacht called the Santana from Dick Powell, spending about thirty weekends each year on the water. With World War II over, Bogart wanted to do more radio. On September 17th, 1945 he hosted an audition for a new mystery/thriller program called Humphrey Bogart Presents. Meanwhile Bogart and Bacall were on screen together again in 1946, this time in an adaptation of Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe novel, The Big Sleep. During World War II, comedy, drama, news, and variety dominated the radio dial, but after the war, detective shows gained network popularity as programming shifted to smaller studios. They were considered a good deal for advertisers. Although Bill Spier was entrenched at CBS, he still had ties with his old agency BBD&O, as well as with Lawrence White, Dashiel Hammett's literary agent. Both ABC and CBS wanted to bring The Adventures of Sam Spade to the air. Initially, everyone wanted Bogart to be the star. Even with Bogart's drawbacks, it was assumed no other actor could fill Spade's shoes. Auditions were held in April of 1946. Enter Howard Duff. An audition was recorded on May 1st. In June, Wildroot officially signed on as sponsor. Spade would make its debut in July over ABC's airwaves. Not to be outdone, on July 2nd, CBS broadcast an episode of Academy Award adapting “The Maltese Falcon.” Humphrey Bogart reprised his role. We heard the opening portion earlier in this episode of Breaking Walls, here's the close. Meanwhile on October 14th, 1946 Bogart and Bacall reprised their roles from To Have and Have Not for The Lux Radio Theatre. The next January 5th, 1947, Bogart and Lauren Bacall were guests on The Jack Benny Program.
This week on Peanuts and Popcorn… we kick off our double feature with Bogart and Bacall in To Have and Have Not, while our second film is the 1955 Burt Lancaster directorial debut, The Kentuckian. In Peanuts, we discuss the retirement of friend of the show, Bartolo Colon. We'll also react to a recent Jayson Stark column in The Athletic. Stephen Strasburg has another setback. Finally, we mourn the passing of Ed Stack, the former president of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Next Show's Films: Leo's Pick: The Full Monty (1997) Tom's Pick: Le Samouraï (1967)
In 1943 and 1944 Bogart went on War effort tours with his third wife Mayo Methot, making trips to Italy and North Africa. He produced shorts for The American Red Cross effort and the Victory Bond drive. The relationship with Mayo was strained. She accused Bogart of having an affair with Ingrid Bergman during the filming of Casablanca. Bergman later remembered that Bogart barely spoke to her off camera, let alone had an affair. Back stateside, Bogart was cast as Steve Morgan for an adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's To Have and Have Not. In casting "Slim" Browning, Howard Hawks' wife Nancy Keith saw a Harper's Bazaar cover that featured an eighteen year-old model and actress named Betty Joan Perske. Hawks immediately signed her to a contract. She'd soon change her name to Lauren Bacall. Mayo Methot had long accused Bogart of affairs with all his co-stars, something he'd actually never done. When Bogie and Bacall met, he was attracted to her outspoken personality, poise, looks, and long, lean figure. Bogart kept Bacall at ease during filming and their chemistry was apparent from the beginning, with their twenty-five year age difference creating a mentor-student acting dynamic. At first Bogart made sure his meetings with her were discreet and brief. They wrote heart-felt letters and made sure to be publicly professional, while Bogart encouraged her to steal scenes, delighting Howard Hawks. But when Hawks realized there was more to their chemistry than friendship, he disapproved of the affair. The film premiered on October 11th, 1944 while Bogart refused to stop seeing Bacall. His marriage to Mayo Methot was finally over. He filed for divorce in February of 1945. The next month, Bogart appeared on the Thursday March 8th 1945 episode of Suspense in Bill Spier's production of “Love's Lovely Counterfeit” at 8PM eastern time. This episode had a rating of 13.6, winning its time slot against NBC's Frank Morgan Show. Playing opposite Bogart was Lurene Tuttle. Bogart and Lauren Bacall married in a small ceremony at the country home of Bogart's close friend, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield, on May 21st, 1945. On August 30th, the couple appeared with Frank Sinatra on Command Performance.
This week on Peanuts and Popcorn… We open up the bag of “Popcorn” with Tom's choice, the W. C. Fields 1934 film, It's a Gift. In “Peanuts”, we'll react to Jayson Stark's list of active players who may be headed to the Hall of Fame. We'll ask the question, “What has happened to the no-hitter? Christopher Morel is showing Cubs fans that he is certainly worth the price of admission. We'll look at some not so famous “one-hit wonders”. Betty Joan Perske was 18 years old when she met 44 year-old screen star Humphrey Bogart on the sound stage of 'To Have and Have Not' at Warner Studios in Burbank, California, in 1942. Her picture had landed on the cover of a fashion magazine called Harpers which came in the mail to Warner film director Howard Hawks home- where his wife Slim picked it up and mentioned "You know what Howard, this might be the girl you're looking for for that movie". She was sent a letter and a train ticket to Hollywood, got a chance, worked for it, and was chosen as the leading lady in his upcoming movie, which turned out to be a smash hit. She became known to the world as Lauren Bacall- and she married Humphrey Bogart, enjoying one of Hollywood's truest marriages for 12 years until his early death. This is their story.
