Big changes could soon be coming to the way college athletes can profit off their name, image and likeness, or NIL. Since NIL legislation was first passed in 2021, student-athletes have had to pursue deals independently of their universities. But under the terms of a legal settlement announced last year, colleges could devote up to $20.5 million in athletic revenue to directly paying athletes for use of their name, image and likeness. The agreement still needs final approval from a federal judge, but is expected to be resolved in the coming weeks. Lauren Anderson is the director of the Warsaw Sports Business Center at the University of Oregon. She joins us with more details on the settlement and its implications for college athletic programs in Oregon.

We had a great time talking with Lauren about music as the constant in her life, wearing every single hat as a working musician, and females with huge voices who don't hold back (likeLauren!). We also geek out over arts and crafts!    This soulful rocker, originally from Chicago, has had a passion for singing throughout her entirelife. Growing up in a household that was rich in music, her influences were widely varied from artists such as Susan Tedeschi, Bonnie Raitt, The Pointer Sisters, Eva Cassidy, Etta James, Joss Stone, Kelly Clarkson, and many more.   Despite these modern musical influences, Lauren was classically trained throughout most of her early life. She began classical piano lessons at the age of 8, was an active member of several choirs and began taking classical voice lessons when she began high school. She eventually took her love of singing to the Quad Cities and obtained a Bachelor's degree in music with an emphasis on voice at Augustana College. During her college years she spent a summer living inNovafeltria, Italy, learning the language and touring and studying opera. Initially she planned on becoming an opera singer, but quickly realized that rock and soul music were more her style.    Since moving to Nashville, Lauren has continued to tour and release new music. Her album, “Love on the Rocks” that was released in the summer of 2021 debuted at #14 on the BillboardBlues Chart, #4 on Roots Music Report & #21 on the NACC Blues Charts. Anderson has opened for bands such as Beth Hart, Ana Popovic and Mike Zito. Zito was also a featured artist on her sophomore album, on the tune "Back to Chicago". She just released her third full-length album, “Burn it all Down”, which features Albert Castiglia on the track “Zombie Blues” and JohnSalaway on “Hit The Spot.”   Check her out here:  Website: laurenandersonmusic.com  IG: laurenandersonmusic  FB: Lauren Anderson

Welcome back to the podcast! In this episode, Amanda, Laura, and Kendra share their excitement over a glowing five-star review from Dr. Lauren Anderson, MD, and dive into a discussion on repairing relationships with adults, inspired by the Gottman Institute's research. What You'll Learn in This Episode: - The Gottman Method: John and Julie Gottman's robust research on marriage and relationships has provided a wealth of knowledge about what makes relationships work and fail. The hosts discuss the “Four Horsemen” of relationship conflict: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling, and the importance of repair attempts to maintain healthy relationships. - Imperfect Relationships: Perfection isn't the goal. Instead, it's about how we manage the inevitable mistakes and miscommunications. The hosts explore the idea that 91% of the time, we're miscommunicating or having hurt feelings, but what matters is how we make repairs. - Repair Attempts: The episode focuses on how to initiate and recognize repair attempts, whether it's through a smile, kind words, or an action like holding hands. The key is creating a safe space to understand where your partner is coming from and to validate each other's feelings. - Using I-Statements: Effective communication during conflict can often begin with “I” statements, like “I feel overwhelmed” or “I need a break,” which can help de-escalate a heated conversation and foster better understanding. - Bids for Connection: Learn how responding to small “bids” from your partner—like a comment about the weather or a request for attention—builds the foundation of a healthy relationship and strengthens emotional connection. - Building Friendship: The hosts emphasize that a solid friendship is the foundation of any healthy relationship. The Gottman Method's “Sound Relationship House” model starts with nurturing fondness, admiration, and responding to your partner's emotional needs. - Practical Applications for Work and Life: Although this episode focuses on intimate relationships, the principles of repair can also be applied to professional relationships, friendships, and family dynamics. Key Takeaways: - Relationships are built on moments of repair, not perfection.- Using gentle startups and I-statements can help diffuse conflict.- Bids for connection are important to strengthen the emotional bond in any relationship.- You can apply these repair techniques in both personal and professional settings. Special Mention: Dr. Lauren Anderson, MD, left us a wonderful five-star review, and it really made our day! Your feedback means the world to us, so please leave a review if you haven't already. It helps other doctors find us and allows us to expand our ripple effect. Ballet traces its origins to the 15th century and the Italian Renaissance. But the art form has continued to evolve, with choreographers and dancers creatively incorporating new interpretations reflective of contemporary culture. Despite its evolution, today's ballet still lacks dancers of color, especially in principal roles.Trailblazer Lauren Anderson was one of the first Black dancers to climb the ranks to become the principal dancer at a major ballet company. Though it's been 34 years since she made history in that role, Anderson tells I SEE U that while progress has been made, more needs to be done so that young people of color can feel like they belong in this industry. She admits that more ballerinas of color are, indeed, taking lead roles – but too often, preference is given to light-skinned dancers. Anderson, who is dark skinned and has a muscular physique, was told as a teen that she didn't fit the right look of a ballerina – despite being recognized as a huge talent at a young age.Stay tuned as host Eddie Robinson chats unguarded with the first African American Principal Dancer with the Houston Ballet, Lauren Anderson. Born and raised in Houston's Third Ward, the iconic dancer reveals how she dealt with discrimination, which led her to unhealthy coping mechanisms due to the pressures of perfection. While she almost lost her way because of addiction, Anderson is now celebrating 14 years of sobriety as she continues to educate and mentor students on their quest to achieve their own hopes and dreams.

Which is probably the least disastrous thing that happens in the hole season. You're about to listen to Season 1, Episode 2. In the previous episode, Co-Captains Sim and Aurelia awoke from stasis on their approach to Mars – and the mission went downhill from there. The ship – virtually uncontrollable in the ‘feminine friendly' ‘Womanual' mode – crash lands on the planet; the cool alien in the abandoned Mars station turns out to be a lonely loser Bob Boyd; the crew are THRILLED to learn that Sim and Aurelia are freshly broken up; and to top it all off, EARTH has been destroyed. Now Sim and Aurelia must search the galaxy to find a new home – preferably before they kill each other. I hope you enjoy our very silly, raunchy sci-fi comedy from Australia. Loop38 explores human creativity, perseverance, and all that binds us all together. Works by George Lewis and Chen Yi look inward, considering humanity's inherent creativity and life force, while Carolyn Chen's work looks outward, contemplating our relationship with the environment. Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton joins the musicians of Loop38 to present the world premiere of a work by Martha Horst based on D.E.E.P.'s poetry about hope, aspiration, and the power of creation. About Loop38 Loop38 is a boundary-pushing, artist-driven new music ensemble based in Houston, Texas, that aims to build community around innovative, stimulating, and culturally relevant musical experiences. Loop38 specializes in the performance of contemporary classical music for solo instrument, chamber ensemble, and large ensemble—instrumentations that collectively allow the full timbral spectrum of an orchestra while showcasing the virtuosic solo capabilities of its performers. Named after the 38-mile freeway (“the loop”) that encircles our hometown, Loop38 focuses on presenting distinctive and memorable aural experiences that push stylistic boundaries, feature underrepresented voices, and incorporate meaningful collaborations with composers and artists of other disciplines. About Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton, poet Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton is an internationally known writer, librettist, educator, activist, performer, and the first Black Poet Laureate of Houston, Texas. Formerly ranked the #2 Best Female Performance Poet in the World (PSI), Her work has appeared in Houston Noir by Akashic Press (2019), Black Girl Magic by Haymarket Books (2019), the Texas Observer, and Fjords Journal, and on such platforms as NPR, BBC, ABC, Apple News, Blavity, Upworthy, and across the TedX circuit. Honored by Houston Business Journal as a part of their 2021 40 Under 40 class, She has served as a contributing writer to Texas Monthly, Glamour Magazine, and ESPN's The Undefeated. This season, Plumshuga: The Rise of Lauren Anderson has its world premiere at STAGES Houston, which D.E.E.P. directs and wrote the book for. She also is slated to perform in Unison for Da Camera Society of Texas, which she also wrote poems for. Her recently published memoir, Black Chameleon (Henry Holt & Co, 2023), explores the use of modern mythology as a path to social commentary. About Martha Horst, composer Martha Horst is a composer who has devoted herself to the performance, creation, and instruction of classical music. Ms. Horst has won the Copland Award, the 2005 Alea III International Composition Competition for her work Threads, and the Rebecca Clarke International Composition Competition for her work Cloister Songs, based on 18th century utopian poetry. She has held fellowships at the MacDowell Colony, Atlantic Center for the Arts, Wellesley Conference, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and Dartington International School in the UK. Her work Piano Sonata No. 1, recorded by acclaimed pianist Lara Downes, was released nationally by Crossover Media.
