It's Miriam Shor, y'all! You Might Know Her From Younger, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Magic Hour, GCB, Shortbus, Swingtown, Maestro, American Fiction, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Miriam gave us all the scoop on grounding the zaniness of Diana Trout on Darren Star's Younger, leading the indie comedy Magic Hour, and appearing in "brilliant but canceled" series like GCB and Swingtown. All that, plus Miriam talked to us about being one of John Cameron Mitchell's "players," appearing in Shortbus and, of course, originating the role of Yitzhak in the Hedwig universe; popping up in prestige Oscar films; her musical theatre roots; New York City history; and dying by way of a paintbrush in The Americans. Julien Salvia and Ludovic-Alexandre Vidal (Writers, Luxembourg 2025) - 18:23, Andrew Lippa (Big Fish, The Addams Family, Wild Party) - 34:45 This week we're talking about songwriting! In our first segment, we discuss how culture and technology have changed the collaborative model for songwriting over the years - and discuss how and why all collaborative models, even some older ones, are still relevant at Eurovision today. Then, we talk to Julien Salvia and Ludovic-Alexandre Vidal- the songwriters behind Luxembourg's 2025 entry, "La poupée monte le son." They give us a window into their songwriting process and how it's developed over years writing for theater, and now Eurovision. Finally, we sit down with preeminent Broadway composer, Andrew Lippa (Big Fish, The Addams Family, Wild Party) for a game that explores the differences between Eurovision and the charts. Andrew brings his songwriting expertise to bear on a number of Eurovision songs over the years- some of which were hits at the contest, while others stood out on the charts. Welcome back to a brand new season of The Last Show on Earth!!If there was a huge asteroid hurtling toward Earth threatening to destroy life as we know it and you could see one more show before you die, what would it be? It can be anything you want - a show you've seen before, one that you wish you'd seen, or something you've made up entirely. What would be YOUR Last Show on Earth? Brian d'Arcy James and I first crossed paths when we shared the stage in Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman's glorious (and we thought Broadway Bound) Harmony nearly twenty years ago. Even then he'd already established himself as a bona fide Broadway and Off Broadway star (Titanic, Sweet Smell of Success, The Wild Party, Carousel) but his accomplishments since then in theatre, TV and Hollywood have catapulted him straight into the hearts of millions of musical theatre lovers. Most recently seen on Broadway in Days of Wine and Roses, Brian is doing the most extraordinary work of his career (and THAT is saying something) and so generously takes time to sit with me and share memories and stories from one of the most prolific careers out there. Please enjoy my chat with the nicest man in show business, Mr. Brian d'Arcy James!

Drew McOnie is a British choreographer and theatre director, and one of the busiest people in show business. He danced with Matthew Bourne's New Adventures company, but soon wanted to run the show. His work hits a sweet spot between warm and witty, always with a kinetic fizz: whether in the West End, on Broadway or in ballet. His new version of the Nutcracker gives the festive favourite a sweetly queer twist, and next year sees his stage version of the Oscar winning movie The Artist. Drew became a father just a week before this recording – no wonder that we speak about making families in and out of dance.Drew McOnie is Artistic Director of the McOnie Company and an Associate Artist at the Old Vic and Birmingham Rep theatres. He won an Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreography for In the Heights and was nominated for the same award the following year for Jesus Christ Superstar. His credits as director/choreographer include: On the Town (Olivier Award Nomination for Best Musical Revival), The Wild Party and Strictly Ballroom in the UK and King Kong on Broadway. Ballets include Merlin (Northern Ballet). The McOnie Company's latest works are Nutcracker (Tuff Nutt Jazz Club), which runs until 6 January 2024, and The Artist, which opens in May 2024.Find out more about the work of the RADFollow the RAD on social media and join the conversation with host David Jays:Instagram @royalacademyofdanceFacebook @RoyalAcademyofDanceTwitter @RADheadquartersYouTube / royalacademydanceDavid Jays @mrdavidjaysSign up to our mailing list to keep in touch!RAD is an independent educational charity and does not receive regular government funding. in today's deep dive, we'll listen to a conversation with directors Danny Yoerges and Rachel Rizzuto about the musical “The Wild Party" that is coming soon to Krannert Center for Performing Arts.
Welcome to another episode of Queernundrum, where we explore the lives and legacies of remarkable individuals who have left a mark on history. In today's episode, we dive into the incredible life and career of Dorothy Arzner, an American film director, a true pioneer in the entertainment industry, and an LGBTQ+ icon.Dorothy Arzner was a trailblazer, and her story is nothing short of inspirational. Born 1897, she would go on to become one of the most prolific and innovative directors in the history of American cinema. In an era when female directors were a rarity, Arzner shattered glass ceilings and blazed a trail for future generations of women in film.In 1927, she directed her first feature film, "Fashions for Women," making her the first woman to direct a sound film. One of Arzner's most iconic films is "The Wild Party" (1929), starring the legendary Clara Bow, a Hollywood sweetheart. It was a critical and commercial success and solidified Arzner's reputation as a director who could bring out the best in her actors and push the boundaries of storytelling. She was known for her meticulous attention to detail, innovative camera work, and her ability to create dynamic and compelling narratives.Throughout her career, Dorothy Arzner directed numerous films, working with some of the biggest stars of her time, including Katharine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, and Lucille Ball. Her work covered a wide range of genres, from comedies and dramas to musicals, and consistently pushed the boundaries of what was possible in filmmaking. But Dorothy Arzner's story is not just one of cinematic achievement; it's also a story of personal courage and resilience. Arzner was openly gay in an era when such a revelation was met with hostility and discrimination. She lived her life authentically and unapologetically, making her a queer icon and an inspiration to the LGBTQ+ community. Her work often featured strong, independent female characters, which was a reflection of her own determination to break through the barriers imposed by a male-dominated industry.Arzner's influence on Hollywood extended far beyond her own films. She mentored and inspired a new generation of filmmakers, both male and female, and her legacy can be seen in the work of directors who followed in her footsteps. In this episode, we explore the life and career of Dorothy Arzner, a visionary director, a pioneer in cinema, and a queer icon. Join us as we celebrate her groundbreaking contributions to the world of film and honor her legacy as a trailblazer who fearlessly shattered the glass ceiling, both in Hollywood and in matters of the heart.Q-News:LGBTQ+ Montanans have celebrated another brief win after a judge prolonged the injunction on the state's vaguely-worded drag banBiden honors Matthew Shepard and condemns anti-LGBTQ violence - On the 25th anniversary of Shepard's death, President Biden condemned anti-LGBTQ violenceCasting gay actors to play gay characters is about ‘authenticity'60th anniversary of the March on Washington Gay and targeted in Uganda: Inside the extreme crackdown on LGBTQ...

Scott sits down with a former student, Alyssa Carol, for a heartfelt and lovely conversation about Alyssa's pathway towards higher education at the University of Michigan's famed Musical Theatre BFA and making her Broadway debut as an original Broadway cast member in Andrew Lloyd Webber's brand new musical, BAD CINDERELLA. And while in many ways Alyssa is living what from the outside looks to be a Broadway Cinderella story… she comes to the podcast to share her personal journey to this moment to highlight the fact that the road to Broadway is rarely glamorous or picture book perfect, but this journey is often a deeply satisfying, valuable and artistically illuminating process. Alyssa Carol is a performing artist originally from Orange County, CA. She grew up dancing, singing and acting and eventually attended the Orange County School of the Arts to study Musical Theatre from 7th-12th grade where she discovered a deeper sense of her artistry and the cathartic nature of performing. And I had the privilege to be her conservatory director for her junior and senior year at OCSA. She is currently completing her last semester at The University of Michigan in their BFA Musical Theatre program remotely from NYC… so that she could join the original cast as a swing of the Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's BAD CINDERELLA covering 9 tracks and triumphantly made her Broadway debut during previews on March 9th. At the University of Michigan she was featured in productions of The House of Bernarda Alba, Hair, Michael McElroy's Sonnets, Soliloquies and Soul, The Wild Party; she made her professional debut as the female swing in The Ogunquit Playhouse staging of The Nutty Professor; At OCSA, she played Charity in SWEET CHARITY, Olive in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, was in the ensemble of OCSA's productions of Jasper in Deadland, Footloose as an Associate Choreographer (with Emily Baggerly) on an epic production of EVITA. On a personal note, Alyssa is a light in this world and a ferocious quadruple threat - actor, dancer, singer AND creative/maker. She is a wonderful example of leading with the love of an artform, and practicing that abundant mindset at every turn of the creative process. In this episode, we talk about the many facets of her talent and creative interest; what helped her be her authentic self in audition settings; How she decided to say YES to a school like University of Michigan; And a touching story of being guided by the legendary Broadway dancer and choreographer, Ann Reinking, just weeks before her passing.
