Hello Everyone, I am so excited for you all to listen to this really pleasant conversation I had with Tiler Peck. The world renowned, incredibly dynamic, musical and versatile dancer of today. People have said about her "I don't even have to hear the music to be able to know what it sounds like when I watch you dance." Tiler Peck started dancing at her mother's studio at the age of two and was introduced to various dance styles. She worked with former Bolshoi principal dancer Alla Khaniashvili and former New York City Ballet dancers Patricia Neary and Yvonne Munsey. Peck's journey led her to the School of American Ballet (SAB) and eventually to New York City Ballet. She had to navigate the transition from jazz to ballet and overcome feelings of comparison and insecurity. P eck's musicality is a defining characteristic of her dancing, and she describes it as being an extension of the music. She believes in breaking the rules and being fearless on stage. In this conversation, Tiler Peck discusses the importance of musicality in ballet and how it can be taught. Can it be taught to the degree Tiler is gifted? She emphasizes the need for dancers to listen to the music and become comfortable with it, allowing it to guide their movements. Tiler also shares her experience as a perfectionist and how it has both helped and hindered her progress. She highlights the importance of finding a balance between striving for perfection and letting go to fully express oneself. Tiler also talks about the significance of downtime and having experiences outside of ballet, which can enhance a dancer's artistry and bring more depth to their performances. Let's meet Tiler! Today I am speaking with Steven McRae, Principal Dancer with the Royal Ballet, London. Steven grew up in Western Sydney, in a suburb called Plumpton, 45kms West of Sydney. His Dad was a drag car racer, and no one in the family had ever learnt to dance. But somehow, dance found Steven, And at the age of 7, he asked his Mum and Dad if he could start dance lessons and he enrolled in a local studio around the corner from home. It was a life changing decision. By 17, he had not only won the Genée and the Prix de Lausanne, he was standing alone in London having been accepted into the Royal Ballet School—his heartbroken mother on the plane home. In this beautifully candid conversation, Steven talks about his journey to Principal at the Royal Ballet by the age of 23— and that, it's not all as it seems; he speaks about early bullying, crippling home sickness, not always fitting in, and devastating injuries. But Steven speaks of more than that; he talks about starting his own family with his wife Elizabeth Harrod—also a dancer at the Royal Ballet, his post retirement plans, and the moment he snapped his Achilles tendon live on stage in front of 2,500 people, and how he climbed back from the impossible, to perform with the Royal Ballet once again.Steven continues to perform as a Principal Artist with the Royal Ballet in London, all the while juggling life with his wife Elizabeth and their 3 children Audrey, Frederick and Rupert. Our hosts David Graver and Indrani Pal-Chaudhuri are delighted to chat with the brilliant Julian MacKay, the first American to graduate from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy with a full Russian Diploma having completed both the upper and lower school, and Principal Dancer at The Bayerisches Staatsballett. Graduating in the top of his class, he was hailed as "Apollo" and the next Nureyev by Russian dance critics. In this episode of The Accutron Show, Julian talks about his experience, upbringing and the challenges (as well as successes) to keep ballet interesting. He also discusses engaging with young audiences in today's world that is dominated by technology. Tune in and dance this episode away with us. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS11:00 The approach and perceptions on the classical arts is changing. My goal is to make sure that someone my age is excited about the ballet experience. It has a lot to do with the stories we tell, the way we tell them, the people that are represented on stage and who those people are marketed and shown to. 22:43 The beauty and challenge of ballet today is how to bring into modern times characters and stories that were written and conceived centuries ago. As a dancer, I have to understand the original character and how that character would behave today. For example Cinderella, if I am to play the prince, I have to ask myself how would a prince treat a woman today? 29:40 When you take a different approach, rather than the doom and gloom and you put in something beautiful and say "Hey, we are going to create hope and inspire a generation to sort this out," it can lead to something that is unexpected. Because dance and ballet communicate in a way that is even more powerful than words sometimes.
