Wild Sheep Foundation's Mission is “We enhance wild sheep populations, promote scientific wildlife management, and educate the public and youth on sustainable use and the conservation benefits of hunting while promoting the interests of the hunter.” Education of youth and the public is critical to our mission accomplishment. We address the youth component primarily through events and efforts led by W.S.F. Youth Education Coordinator Dr. Ryan Brock, including the Youth Wildlife Conservation Experience at our annual Sheep Show® convention and his Shooting & Hunting Ethics Education Program (S.H.E.E.P.) conducted at public events as well as our chapter and affiliate banquets and conventions. The National Bighorn Sheep Center (N.B.S.C.) in Dubois, Wyoming, is a world-class education and interpretative Center focusing on the needs of wild sheep and those who have and currently live amongst them. Thousands of visitors learn about wild sheep and their habitat each year by visiting the Center. A recent outreach tool used by the N.B.S.C. are webinars based from the Center, such as the recent disease webinar including expert panelists from throughout Canada and the U.S.A. conceived and led by N.B.S.C. Executive Director Sara Bridge. In this episode, Ryan and Sara visit with Sheep Fever co-host Gray Thornton to speak on their programs and their impact on youth and adults. The three discuss ways to expand and better collaborate WSF and N.B.S.C. programs to reach even more people to educate them on wild sheep, wildlife, wild lands, and the conservation benefits of sustainable use in which hunting plays such an integral part.

In Episode 56, we sat down with the United Stroke Alliance (USA) Co-Founder and Executive Director Marylee Nunley and CEO Larry Schaer to discuss how this dynamic duo has grown the alliance from a single person in a single community, to its expansion and now having offered 300 Retreat and Refresh Stroke Camps throughout the country. The Retreat & Refresh Stroke Camp program (now a division of the USA) was first developed in 2004 by Marylee & John Nunley (Founders) following John's stroke in 2001. We discuss the USA team's stroke support outreach efforts and how they have extended into communities throughout the country with their stroke awareness and prevention programs. The team estimates they have now educated millions of people on the signs of stroke as well as have supported thousands of stroke survivors, caregivers and their family members in their stroke recovery journeys.  About the United Stroke Alliance The United Stroke Alliance (USA) team is made up of passionate individuals who tirelessly strive to make a difference in not only stroke survivors and caregivers lives, but also for the members of every community through their stroke awareness and prevention programs. Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of the USA, which was founded in 2004 when one stroke caregiver, (Co-Founder Marylee Nunley) wanted to improve the quality of life for local stroke survivors and caregivers through a weekend retreat. In addition to taking a deep dive into the stroke camp experience for caregivers and stroke survivors on this episode, we also highlighted their Stroke Out Stroke Program at ballparks country wide to raise awareness for their BE-FASTER! campaign to know stroke warning signs and take action through emergency response and 911. We also mentioned the work of their Youth Education on Stroke (YES) initiative to extend this important BE-FASTER! message into the public schools with brain and health curriculum focused on stroke awareness and prevention.  Finally we covered the financial challenges of growing stroke awareness and survivor support programs and the stigma associated with this condition that often does not get the attention of other disorders and diseases that have more research dollars, celebrity star power and funding to support their continued growth and development.  Of Note: Larry challenged Mike to take the ‘cookie challenge' at the end of the episode! In episode 296, Kestrel welcomes Kelly Drennan, the founder of Fashion Takes Action, to the show. A Canada-based non-profit, Fashion Takes Action works to remove barriers to sustainability through education, awareness, research and collaboration. “We often talk about our school program, and just fashion is inherently cool, you know. And so, we're able to really, through our school program, touch on some of these bigger, broader climate change issues, but through the lens of fashion, which for kids is relatable and cool. They get up every day and they put on clothes, but they don't get up every day and drive a vehicle or pay the energy bills or go grocery shopping. So, for us, it's just a really great way to reach them and we try to do it in a way that's cool.” -Kelly Have you looked into educational programs around fashion and sustainability? Or maybe you have completed a program focused on sustainability or fashion and sustainability? The options out there are definitely growing in the higher education realm, but I think there is still a lot of work to do when it comes to ensuring the curriculum becomes more holistic and includes the root issues that have led to why we are where we are today. But we are seeing changes at the higher education level, which is important. At the same time, what about kids? What about our youth?  When are they getting exposure to questions like:  Who made my clothes? What are my clothes made out of? What does a fashion supply chain look like? I hear whispers from folks in my community that little projects connected to fashion and sustainability are sneaking their way into elementary and high school education through educators who care about it, but on a large scale, I rarely hear that our young people are getting access to learn about why what we wear matters, on so many levels. This week's guest developed a program back in 2014 to help teach youth about the impacts of fashion. While it was delivered in person by educators for several years, their workshops are now available online.  As she says – “If we can reach these young people before they're out there in the world buying things, then, maybe we have a better chance at changing that behavior.” Quotes & links from the conversation: “We realized early on — we weren't just going to be working with industry, because if consumers (I hate that word, I know we all hate that word now), but if the general public wasn't aware of the negative impacts of the industry and what sustainable alternatives there were, then they weren't necessarily going to have access to sustainable designers. And so, we always felt that we needed to keep educating the general public, while at the same time, supporting the industry.” -Kelly (10:22) My Clothes My World Program WEAR Conference Fashion Impacts 101 (RCGD Global x Fashion Takes Action Video Series) Fashion Take's Action Website > Follow Kelly on Instagram > Follow Fashion Takes Action on Instagram >

With Rosanna Ayers of The Biomimicry Institute When facing a design challenge, ask yourself, what would nature do? Or rather, what does nature do? How can the “three seeds of biomimicry” be applied to human design? Where does regeneration fit into this framework? How can we learn more from Mother Nature? This is where educators can play an important role in learners' development. Learners bring a lot of cultural knowledge to the design process, too. It's just a matter of unleashing it! In this discussion with TBI's Director of Youth Education, Rosanna Ayers, join us in exploring the intricacies of biomimetic design and what educators can do to open students' eyes to the wisdom of nature. Guest: Rosanna Ayers has a Bachelor of Science in International Business, a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, an Administrative Service Credential, and a Master of Education in Leadership and School Development, with an emphasis on Next Generation Science Standards. She teaches graduate-level integrated science courses for teacher candidates at a university and lives in the countryside with her husband and children. Rosanna is the Director of Youth Education at the Biomimicry Institute where she directs the Youth Design Challenge and other educational programs in support of increasing the scope of biomimicry in education.

On Episode 18 Part 1 we proudly and humbly present the final episode of the first year of The Pursuit of Health Podcast as we take a bold step into the emotionally packed subject of Domestic Violence. Our special guest is MacKenzie Bachar, the Advocacy & Education Director of Fearless!, Hudson Valley, New York. Ms. Bachar works on the frontlines with victims and survivors of Domestic Violence in all its forms and in collaboration with other community agencies such as the YWCA, police, and legal professionals. She also focuses a significant portion of her efforts on educating our youth about the dynamics of Domestic Violence in schools, homes and the community at large.  Ms. Bachar shares her own professional journey from academia into the world of education and direct client services for individuals and families affected by gender, sexual and domestic violence. She opens up to the deep cultural roots of these problems that must be addressed. She gives us a wonderful insight to the evolution of Fearless! and the supportive legislation that has promoted and recognized the incredibly valuable and important work that her team and other professionals around the country carry out against all odds. She affirms that Education and Advocacy go hand-in-hand in the fight against this horrible affliction in our communities.  Our guest provides us some much needed details about the scope and impact of Domestic Violence. She makes a very cogent argument that Domestic Violence negatively affects everyone in our society. She explains the emotional and psychological dynamics of Domestic Violence from the vantage point of both the perpetrator and the targeted person. Along the way she teaches us about the difference between Power used as a weapon to control someone and Empowerment as a means of prevention and survival.   Ms. Bachar finishes Part 1 of our discussion by encouraging us all to become “Active Bystanders” when confronted with problems as pervasive and dangerous as Domestic Violence. She encourages us all to learn as much as possible about our own biases in this regard and to create forums for open and honest discussions within our homes and communities - with a special emphasis on Youth Education. She advises us to Start Early and Talk Early.  Next time, in Part 2 of Episode 18, we finish our first year of the podcast by continuing our discussion with Ms. Bachar. She talks about the future of her team's efforts to combat Domestic Violence and their renewed focus to approach this problem from the vantage point of a broad analysis of its ongoing cultural origins.  Our team at The Pursuit of Health Podcast can be reached through Facebook and Instagram @drfethkemd and soon on our website at drfethkemd.com.Referenceshttps://ncadv.org/STATISTICShttps://www.thehotline.org/identify-abuse/why-do-people-abuse/https://www.un.org/en/coronavirus/what-is-domestic-abusehttps://assets.speakcdn.com/assets/2497/ncadv_new_york_fact_sheet_2020.pdfhttps://www.ywca.org/wp-content/uploads/WWV-GBV-Fact-Sheet-Final.pdf
