Rachel Collishaw is looking for a better way to live. She wants more connection, strong community, and support as she ages. She found a group in Ottawa wanting the same thing, and the excitement is palpable. They want to build something called Cohousing, where homes get built with the intention of spending more time with your neighbours, sharing meals, and support for young and old. As Julia Pagel follows the group, she hears stories of how cohousing can mean beautiful mountain homes with children running freely, but also stories of community tension, money lost, and for Rachel a price tag that might be too high to manage.
Julian Clover hears about a new co-housing project in Northstowe from the company behind Marmalade Lane.
Rachel Collishaw is ready for a big change. She wants to leave her secluded rural home for something called cohousing. In an uncertain world, she and her husband are ready for a bit more connection. They would exchange their peaceful home for a much smaller condo, shared meals, commons spaces. But, right now, it's just a dream. One they aren't sure they can afford. Can Rachel and others like her find a better way of living with cohousing? Or is it a dream that just isn't ready to take root in Ontario?

Seattle has more single people living alone than any major U.S. city. The average new apartment size in Seattle is just 650 square feet -- that’s the smallest in the nation. If you’re single, that might work for you. But if you want to raise a family in a larger space, that can get expensive: $3500 a month on average for a 3-bedroom apartment. That’s more than double what a studio would cost. A house with a backyard could cost thousands more. Now, a growing number of people are building a different kind of housing to get the benefit of more space without the added cost. It’s called co-housing, where people come together with friends and strangers to live in modest apartments with more shared spaces -- all designed from scratch. On today's episode, can a housing model built on sharing really make city life more affordable? Coming up: Did you or someone you know move to the Pacific Northwest because of climate change? Whether the motivation was environmental disaster, rising insurance costs, or just general anxiety, we want to hear from you. During a trip to S.W. Colorado in April of 2025, I discovered KSUT Public Radio in Ignacio, which operates as a tribal service and also serves anyone living in the Four Corners region, including Durango, Silverton, Cortez, Mancos, Pagosa Springs and parts of New Mexico, Arizona and S.E. Utah. It is an affiliate of NPR, the BBC, American Public Media and Public Radio International. Tami Graham, its Executive Director, sat down with me and explained the essential services KSUT provides, the threat to its existence if federal funding is withdrawn and the impact this would have on people living in its coverage area. Also on the program is an interview with Mac Thompson, founding member of Heartwood Cohousing (not far from Ignacio), established in the year 2000 and about to expand from 24 to 38 households. Listen and learn about cohousing in general and Heartwood Cohousing in particular.
