How effective is “addiction medication” at helping people to stop an addiction? And if it is so effective, then why are overdose rates in the US still rising rapidly.

Mark Scheeren and his colleague, Michelle Dunbar, developed the Freedom Model of Addiction. Listen as Claudia and Bev discuss this, agreeing on some things and disagreeing on others. It's always interesting to listen to different points of view. Both Mark and Michelle have struggled with addiction. Is addiction a brain disease? Can someone recover? Is medication always needed to stop using substances? Do people with addiction have to stop using all substances for the rest of their lives? Is the hijacked brain idea true? Who created it and why? He played in a band and had already worked at studios since the young age of 14!! He then moved to LA in hopes to become the protegé of a famous producer. He SNUCK in to Hollywood parties handing out drum samples that he recorded which ended up on a ton of big records for artists like Santana, Kelly Clarkson, and Nickelback.
In this episode, I sit down with Steven Slate, who co-founded Slate Digital: a GIANT in the audio world, with plugins, sample packs, gear, classes, and so much more! I use their plugins ALL THE TIME, and you might have seen the Slate VMS-1 in some of my videos; it's one of my favorite mics! So needless to say, when Slate reached out to me and told me they loved what I was teaching, I was DYING with excitement! I may be fangirling a little bit as well ;) As it turns out, Steven and I have a common goal: we both want to make it as easy as possible for songwriters to make music on their own terms...AND less scary! Steven does this by creating the best plugins, equipment, samples, etc. he can and making it affordable, and I do this by teaching people how to use those tools to make the music that's in their hearts! Two different approaches with the same end goal: to get YOU to be your own producer! So if you’re ready to learn how to produce your own music I have EXCELLENT news! My course “From Voice Memo 2 Demo” is NOW OPEN FOR ENROLLMENT! Not only that, I have partnered with Slate Digital to give you a FREE 3 month trial of the ALL ACCESS PASS, which is over $5,000 worth of plugins and sounds, wowza! Click here to get started!!

Alcoholics Anonymous is the most widely accepted and protected cult on the planet! In this podcast Mark and Michelle talk about their experiences being born into AA families and then fulfilling the dire predictions that they would become "alcoholics". From attending thousands of meetings, to forming their own AA groups and holding service positions in their district and area, Mark and Michelle got a unique perspective on the inner workings of AA, and how those who question the dogma are treated. For them leaving AA was a process that eventually led to co-writing The Freedom Model for Addictions with Mr. Steven Slate.
Paul Wolff has been designing professional audio equipment since the 70s. Any fans of API audio products know him as the man who brought that company back from the brink of extinction. While at API, Paul designed the 550B EQ, 512 and 3124 mic preamps, Legacy console, and 2500 compressor. But that’s just the beginning — His legendary Lunchbox and 500-series format, which ushered in a new industry, led him be inducted in the NAMM TEC Hall of Fame. Since then he’s gone on to create Tonelux, and has designed products for Slate Audio and Sunset sound, to name a few. Currently he’s back in the console business with his own Fix Audio Designs as well as being the Engineering Project Manager for the Steven Slate companies.
When looking for alternatives to 12 step based programs and meetings, people often look for alternative support groups. And while there are a few, the question remains, are support groups actually necessary and/or effective at helping people to change their substance use behaviors? What people fail to realize is that before 1935 when Alcoholics Anonymous was formed, those people who struggled with alcohol or drug problems simply got over their problems and moved on with their lives. The entire premise that people need some kind of support structure or meeting was literally born out of the 12 step movement. Freedom Model co-authors Mark Scheeren, Steven Slate and Michelle Dunbar discuss their personal experiences in support group meetings and where their research has taken them. They talk candidly about whether or not support group meetings are necessary or effective
This and the next two podcasts will introduce you to The Addiction Solution team, Michelle Dunbar, Mark Scheeren and Steven Slate. In the first in this 3-podcast series, Steven Slate has a candid discussion with Michelle Dunbar what it was like to grow up in Alcoholics Anonymous, which she refers to as "the cult", and how that influenced her life. She discusses how her early life struggles transformed into a passion to find the answers to these problems and help people to change their lives. From her take on moderation, which is heresy in the "recovery" world, to her work helping families of substance users, to her personal experiences working with substance users at The Freedom Model Retreats, you will get a unique glimpse into Michelle's life and the answers she has found over the course of nearly 3 decades of dedicated curiosity and work on this one mission.

Steven Slate, who once struggled with drug use himself, joins me to talk about whether what we think we know about addiction is really true. Is addiction a "disease"? Is "treatment" the only way to deal with it? Are people who believe that don't need treatment "in denial"? Is moderate consumption always off limits for people who have had problems?
Can robots really master our music ? Kenny Gioia set up poll on Facebook to see, asking people to choose between six different masters of the same song - three by humans (John Longley, an anonymous engineer from Sterling Sound and Steven Slate) and three by machines (LANDR, Aria and iZoTope Ozone). The great thing is, the test was blind, and loudness matched - so no-one knew which master they were listening to, and loudness didn't influence the way the masters sounded. And the results of the poll were fascinating. In this show Kenny reveals which master was which, and we discuss the results - including: * Why this is not a scientific test * Ian's blind comments on the masters, including his instincts about which was which * Why the poll results are probably skewed * When automated makes sense * What the robots still can't do - and maybe never will Full show notes and links: http://themasteringshow.com/episode-43
