In this "Industry Dive" episode, Chris Gehringer, a Senior Mastering Engineer & Partner at Sterling Sound joins me for an in-depth discussion on the state of mastering & the loudness wars in modern music. Chris has mastered countless albums over the decades, such as: Wu-Tang Clan's “Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” & Naughty By Nature's 1991 self titled album, along with modern chart toppers such as Rhianna, Lady Gaga & Dua Lipa. Chris' work has also received 20 Grammy nominations (and counting). In the episode, we talk about: the evolution of music mastering; where the loudness war stands in 2025; how brickwalling hinders the mastering process; if there will ever be an industry shift towards "louder doesn't mean better;" Eric Bass of Shinedown's experiences with Sterling Sound's Ted Jensen & how Eric prefers a more dynamic master of their music; how Chris was involved with the interludes featured on Wu-Tang Clan's "Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers);" the loudness / brickwalling controversy surrounding Metallica's "Death Magnetic;" how Dolby Atmos & AI might factor into the future of mastering & so much more! Do you have an enthusiasm for old light bulbs? Then contact Chad and you can geek out about an 1880 Edison Bristol Board Filament prototype lamp, or an 1886 Luminoid Incandescent Lamp. In fact Chad probably has the greatest collection of antique lamps and related electrical artifacts in existence. But this episode isn't all about antique light bulbs. Chad also has some pretty astute things to say about the good, the bad, and the ugly of LEDs.Chad Shapiro has had a fascination with lighting since the age of 13 when his interests in Thomas Edison shifted from the Phonograph to the invention of the first successful incandescent lamp. Mentored by historic light bulb and Edisonia veterans like the late Dr. Hugh F Hicks and later the late Charley Hummel, Chad went on the search the world for the earliest examples of electric lighting history.Alongside this near lifetime fascination with electric lighting, Chad's father had been a lifelong electronics technician. Chad grew up installing electronic gadgets alongside his father much of his childhood. After working for his father for about 10 years Chad founded Sterling Sound & Vision in 2012 to focus on the luxury home automation market. In episode #129 of The XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar meets Clem Burke (from Blondie) and John "Fin" Finseth from The Tearaways to discuss their new album 'And Now For Our Next Trick.' United Kingdom-based Dirty Water Records has signed the California-based rock and roll outfit The Tearaways to a 5-year deal. The label has released the Ed Stasium-produced (Ramones, Talking Heads, Smithereens) digital version of their new record called And For Our Next Trick. The band features the dual lead singers of bassist John "Fin" Finseth and rhythm guitarist Greg Brallier, lead guitar David Hekhouse and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame drummer Clem Burke (Blondie). Welcome back to another episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts! This spin on the dance floor sees our friend Nadine c/o Souldisco return to our airwaves to share a splendid conversation with Jared "Jay B" Boyd on the recent boxset reissue effort from Vinyl Me, Please titled: "Truth Is Where It's At -- A Gospel Truth Collection". The Gospel Truth Label (aka Stax Records Gospel Label), was an imprint of the famous Stax Records label from Memphis, Tennessee. The Gospel Truth series debut in 1972 and produced over 20 albums until 1978, featuring some of the biggest names in Gospel music: The Rance Allen Group, The Staple Singers, The Soul Stirrers, The Pilgrim Jubilees, and The Mighty Clouds of Joy. These albums featured a wide range of Gospel music styles including traditional Gospel, contemporary Christian music, and Soul Gospel. The Gospel Truth series was known for its high-quality production and arrangements, with some of the most talented musicians and producers in the industry working on the albums. Lauded for it's powerful and uplifting messages, this series featured songs + albums touching on themes of faith, hope, and love. Although Stax Gospel and The Gospel Truth series had a relatively short lifespan, they made a significant impact on the Gospel music industry and helped to popularize Gospel music outside of the church. The legacy of Stax Gospel and The Gospel Truth series lives on, with their influence felt in the music of contemporary Gospel artists and the continued popularity of Gospel music worldwide. Jay B authored the special 20-page Listening Notes booklet included in this boxset. Limited to 1,000 numbered copies, the box set includes 6LPs on 180g black vinyl, with AAA lacquers cut from the original tapes by Ryan K. Smith of Sterling Sound. We trust you'll find this conversation informative, interesting, and fun! Thanks again for joining us on another episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts! Nashville-based mastering engineer Ryan Smith works on high-profile vinyl releases such as recent albums by Adele and Taylor Swift, but he's become renowned for the fantastic-sounding reissues he has mastered. As a member of the Vinyl Me, Please record club, I have become happily familiar with the phrase “AAA Lacquers Cut From The Original Analog Tapes by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound.” In this illuminating conversation, Smith discusses his approach to an optimal recording, the level of detail possible in original pressings vs. new versions, the merits of black vs. colored vinyl, and the relative importance of where lacquers are cut vs. where albums are pressed. Band celebrates Road Apples 30th anniversary The Tragically Hip have released a special version of their sophomore album, Road Apples 30th Anniversary Deluxe. The set was released digitally worldwide on November 5th with physical versions on 4 CD/Blu-ray Pure Audio and 5 LP/Blu-ray Pure Audio staggered for Friday, November 12th in Canada, Friday, November 19th in the US and Friday, November 26th for the rest of the world. The expansive deluxe editions are jam-packed with rare and previously unreleased and never heard before pieces of music chronicling the Road Apples era, including the original album remastered in 2021 by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound in Nashville. Bassist Gord Sinclair and drummer Johnny Fay join us to discuss the projects and how they thought much of the vault songs were lost in the Universal Studios Lot fire from 2018. The pair relive many moments from the recording sessions, and share why a show at The Roxy in Los Angeles was included in the physical variations. Stick around after the interview for a discussion Buddy Iahn and Matt Bailey have about Branson and a special project Matt is involved with in the Branson community. On today's edition of Flashback Friday's, I highlight The Maine's 2015 album "American Candy". American Candy is the fifth studio album by American rock band The Maine, released on March 31, 2015, through 8123 Records. The album debuted at number 37 on the Billboard 200. The Maine were teasing a new album in summer 2014, and then proceeded to announce that they would be writing new material in Heber, Arizona. Recording took place at Joshua Tree in California with Colby Wedgeworth acting as the producer. He also engineered and mixed the sessions. Recording place between November 12 and December 12. Ross Garfield was the drum technician at Drum Doctors. Tom Coyne mastered the recordings at Sterling Sound. The album's sound has been described as alternative rock, indie rock, new wave, pop, pop rock and rock. "American Candy" was originally written for Forever Halloween. Drummer Pat Kirch explained that the song "didn't really fit" Forever Halloween, but the band revived it for American Candy "and made it fit." On January 6, 2015, the group revealed that their new album was titled American Candy, and would be released in the spring. "English Girls" was made available for streaming on February 9, and was released as a single on February 10. On the same day, American Candy was announced for release, and the track listing and artwork was revealed. "Miles Away" was made available for streaming on March 10. "Same Suit, Different Tie" was made available for streaming on March 30. American Candy was released through 8123 Records on March 31. When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes is the seventh studio album released by American rock band Yellowcard on March 22, 2011 under Hopeless Records. The album has received positive reviews. The album's title comes from a text message sent to a girl by lead singer Ryan Key. Later in the year, the band released an acoustic version of the album. In July 2010, rumours surfaced that Yellowcard, who had been on a two-year hiatus, would be reforming. In August, Yellowcard announced they would be returning from their hiatus and would be working on a new album for independent label Hopeless Records. Following the band's reformation, they immediately began working on their new album. Ryan Key, who had previously been in a small project with Reeve Oliver vocalist/guitarist Sean O'Donnell (who was chosen as Pete Mosely's replacement after he declined to return) called "Big If", confirmed that some of Big If's songs were going to be reworked by Yellowcard and included on the new album. Sessions for When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes were held at Sunset Sound and The Casita, both in Hollywood, California, in October and November 2010, with producer Neal Avron. He handled recording with engineer and Pro Tools operator Erich Talaba; they were assisted by Morgan Strattton at Sunset. Avron mixed the recordings at Paramount Recording Studios in Holly, with assistance from Nicolas Fournier. Ted Jensen mastered the album at Sterling Sound. While in the studio, they released a number of video updates. Some of the studio updates were shown originally on Rock Sound magazine's website. It was truly a treat to sit down with mastering engineer and editor Rhonda Schoen of New York City's Sterling Sound. Working at Sterling from the mid-Seventies till the late 1990's, Rhonda was at the forefront of post-production. Her clientele included legends like Mick Jagger, Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton to name a few. Beginning her career in fully analogue studios and ending with a transition to digital technology we hear some great stories and of course gear talk!Discogs.comsterling-sound.comSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/SonicArtifacts)
Boston Massachusetts rock band The Freight are on the show today. The band's sound is a mix of rock n' roll, blues rock, soul and jam with a modern rock edge. You are going to love this band! Joining us are frontman Adam Tiro, bassist Stephen Anderson and drummer Marc Loverin. Source: The Freight are keeping the momentum going in 2021 with their 3rd single release of the year, "Fly On". The Freight are riding the up swing after their last single "Found" was their most successful release yet. This latest single is an ambitious, thematic anti-ballad that clearly shows The Freight are much more than just rock n' roller's. Their versatility and growth are on clear display with this song. "Fly On' is a spacious, ambient journey of string arrangements, percussion elements and big harmonies. All the players have shining moments in the song and you can hear the band spreading their wings throughout. The song is the bands most ambitious production yet and engineer/producer Jeff Rosen of Cherrywood Records completely delivered. This song has vibes of vintage U2 deep cuts and has an almost cinematic feel to it. The song builds as it goes and you can feel the instruments moving throughout, ultimately reaching the climactic ending with big harmonies, strings and emotion coming to a peak. "Fly On" sends the message, enough is enough.... You've been here for her too many times before and you can't keep doing that when you feel the way you do about her... Time for her to "Fly On".

My guest today is Ryan Smith a mastering engineer at Sterling Sound. He has mastered records for a wide array of artists, including Greta Van Fleet, Elle King, and AC/DC. Ryan Smith began his journey in the world of audio when he moved to New York City in 1995. In the late 90’s he moved through various recording studio gigs and other “audio odd jobs” around New York City. This eventually led to a job as an assistant engineer at the Manhattan’s Right Track Recording, where Ryan had the opportunity to work alongside legendary engineers and producers, including Phil Ramone, Arif Mardin, Russ Titelman and Frank Filipetti. In 2002, Ryan made the move to mastering. He joined Sterling Sound where he’s been for the past 17 years. Early in his time at Sterling, Ryan spent time working alongside both Ted Jensen and the late George Marino. In addition to digital mastering, Ryan learned the art of vinyl mastering and lacquer cutting from George. During the current resurgence of vinyl, Ryan has become one of the most in demand vinyl specialists around. Thanks to our sponsors! Deborah Berg (http://www.deborahberg.com/) is a performing songwriter and teacher whose distinctive voice, songwriting talents, and warm teaching style characterize her 38-year musical career. She is proud to be an official Martin Guitar and Sennheiser endorsed artist. New Road Home was recorded at Grand Street Recording in Brooklyn, produced by Ken Rich, and mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound in New York City. Deborah’s band on this album combines the immense talents of Charlie Giordano (accordion and keys), Richard Hammond (upright bass), Chris Tedesco (violin), Hugh Pool (vocals and dobro), Sherryl Marshall and Stephanie Seymour (backing vocals), Monica Passin (guitar), Ethan Eubanks (drums), and Rich Hinman (electric and acoustic guitar). NeverWake's music is a sinew of rock and metal which forms a pathway for dark guitar harmonies to unwind into shredding leads. Symphonic choruses and melodic vocals pull the listener into a haunting trance and awaken them with undeniable guttering of heavily distorted breakdowns. NeverWake consists of Johnny DiCarlo on lead vocals/lead guitar, Marcus Giannamore on drums/vocals, George Scott on bass guitar/vocals and Justin Sanford lead guitar/vocals. NeverWake was chosen by the AEG Live promoters to play on the first ever ReverbNation stage at the annual hard rock and heavy metal music festival Carolina Rebellion 2015. Kicking off the weekend for 60,000 fans, NeverWake had the incredible opportunity to share the spotlight with bands such as Korn, Slipknot, Nonpoint, Periphery and many more. In April, NeverWake rocked alongside various artists from Iron Maiden, Disturbed, and Twisted Sister, (The Foundry), at The Hard Rock Cafe in Pittsburgh and had multiple shows at the SXSW Heart ofTexas Rock Fest. Earlier in 2015, the band played at The ReverbNation Stage for the Millennium Music Conference Showcase, Altar Bar in Pittsburgh and several other local and nationwide venues. Described as “smashing 'Bullet For My Valentine' and 'Trivium' together,” NeverWake's second and most recent studio album is "SleepWalker," crafted at Innovation Studios with producer/engineer Mike Ofca and mastered under legendary engineer Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound. Their debut full-length album "Vitality" was released in August 2011 and the single "Cut You Down" on Halloween of 2012. Become a part of the dream and walk with us. Can robots really master our music ? Kenny Gioia set up poll on Facebook to see, asking people to choose between six different masters of the same song - three by humans (John Longley, an anonymous engineer from Sterling Sound and Steven Slate) and three by machines (LANDR, Aria and iZoTope Ozone). The great thing is, the test was blind, and loudness matched - so no-one knew which master they were listening to, and loudness didn't influence the way the masters sounded. And the results of the poll were fascinating. In this show Kenny reveals which master was which, and we discuss the results - including: * Why this is not a scientific test * Ian's blind comments on the masters, including his instincts about which was which * Why the poll results are probably skewed * When automated makes sense * What the robots still can't do - and maybe never will Full show notes and links: http://themasteringshow.com/episode-43
Joining us this week is mastering engineer Chris Athens out of Austin, Texas. You’ve most likely heard his work as he’s worked on some of the biggest records out there; including artists such as Drake, Coldplay, PVRIS, Ben Folds and Wiz Khalifa. Chris was a senior mastering engineer at Sterling Sound, one of the world’s premier mastering facilities, before branching out on his own to start Chris Athens Masters. In this interview, Chris explains what mastering is and why it's important, how he got started in the music industry, and what to avoid when mixing your music. Highlights: - Ross and Marcio try to help Chris through his caffeine comedown - We hear how Chris started out in the music industry and progressed to mastering - Chris tells us how he came to the job he wanted late in life - We hear how Chris always said yes to everything and felt like he was working from behind everyone else - We hear how Chris moving to Sterling Sound was a step back from what he was doing at Sony, but a good... The band immediately began writing as a trio and were eager to finally introduce their music to an audience. In May of 2014, the trio took their new material into the studio and recorded their debut 3-song EP entitled “Welcome to Babylon”. The EP begins with the compelling lead single “Karma”, which contrasts against the melancholy nature of “Arrived”. The release then culminates in the final track, “The Great Pretend”, which makes a brief yet strong first statement on an impressive debut. The EP was produced by Andres Torres, which is a new up and coming producer which primarily has worked with some notable acts in the Latin Rock genre. The DOB project marked his first foray working with an American Rock band. Mastering of the EP was handled by GRAMMY nominated mastering engineer Joe LaPorta who is best known for his work with the Foo Fighters, Killers, Imagine Dragons and Vampire Weekend at Sterling Sound in NYC making this a world class project in every sense of the word. Soon after the recording was done the members agreed that the time had come to add a drummer to the mix. After working with several drummers and holding numerous auditions the band introduced their latest member to the fold Chris Toeller. We have a new show called WA Sessions. Be sure to check it out on iTunes. Coming soon to Google Music, iHeart Radio. Become a member for free on WorldArts.com

The 3rd episode of the epic Mission of Burma analog mastering sessions at Sterling Sound
Yay! We made it! It's show #10 and we're feeling stronger than ever. We review some of what has gone into our first ten shows and how we're just not going to stop! We're already planning what we're going to do to make our 100th show special. Today's show is a tasty grab bag of tidbits that were planned for earlier shows but never made it for one reason or another. CONGRATULATIONS TO JOHN DAVIDSON! John and his lovely wife just welcomed a new addition to the family with a healthy baby boy! He was born at 12:11 AM on Saturday March 11, 2006. He's 6 pounds, 9 ounces, and 20 1/2" long. Al points out that he believes John brought in a surround sound crew to record the birth and that he managed to get a small sample from the scratch track already in 5.1. Al plays the clip and everyone is amazed by the "you are there" realism! A Minor Correction: Just a minor correction from last week's trivia question. We spoke with Charles Dye, and while the Ricky Martin song, Livin' La Vida Loca was recorded and mixed entirely inside the box with Pro Tools, it wasn't mastered that way. It was mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound in New York, New York. Here's the link to the awesome Sterling Sound web site: http://www.Sterling-Sound.com Ted and Sterling Sound has done some great work with artists like: John Mayer, Destiny's Child, Nickelback, Ozzy Osbourne, Green Day, Santana, Bare Naked Ladies, Billy Joel, Chris Botti and a host of others. DIGI 001Al brings up a couple of suggestions for upgrading if you're still using a Digidesign DIGI 001. You might consider the Mbox2, but it turns out that Digidesign is still offering their upgrade trade-in special towards any of the DIGI 002 systems. Al recommends contacting Andy Diekroger at Sweetwater Sound for details. Sweetwater Sound Andy Diekroger (800) 222-4700 Extension: 1273 Steely DanAja Mike highly recommends a DVD titled, Steely Dan - Aja. This is a vivid portrait of the making of the canonical 1970s record AJA by Steely Dan. "The Womanizer"Al mentions a recent gear find that looks very promising. It's dual-tube guitar pre-amps from a relatively new company founded by some ex-Line6 (Pod XT) folks. Here's a link to their site: http://DamageControlUSA.com Viewer Mail: "Big Al, I picked up the BBE acoustic pre-amp you recommended on ebay for $72. Just got it yesterday, tried it out, and you were right. It works great. Nice sweetening effect, even on my Neve-equipped Taylor. Begs a question, however. What's your opinion on piggy-backing pre's?" I'm not a big fan of stacking up pre's. That said, it can work with careful monitoring. The problems that often crop up are distortion and phase-like anomalies. If you're using a unit with an effects loop that you can use it to insert the BBE. If you're using a mixing console, you could also insert the BBE in the channel there. If the only choice is to stack the pre's, I think I'd go through the BBE last. It's usually not a good effect to equalize the BBE process. It lives best at the end of the chain.
