In Music and Sound in the Films of Dennis Hopper (Routledge,2024), Stephen Lee Naish explores how as a director Dennis Hopper used music and sound to propel the narrative of his work and to signpost the era in which the films were made and the characters' place within American culture. Naish examines five of Hopper's films to show how this deep engagement with music to build character and setting continued throughout his career, as Hopper used folk, punk, hip-hop, and jazz to shape the worlds of his films in ways that influenced other filmmakers and foreshadowed the advent of the music video format. As Naish demonstrates, throughout his career Hopper relied on music to propel his films and tell his stories.  In Easy Rider, Hopper was one of the first filmmakers to include popular rock, pop, and folk music on a soundtrack. In his sophomore film The Last Movie, Hopper blended diegetic performances of folk and traditional Peruvian indigenous music to create a textured piece of sound art. In Out of the Blue, Hopper used punk rock as a vibrant shock, but also as a reaction to the failed ethos of the past. In 1988's Colors he incorporated hip-hop and rap music to soundtrack the lives of the gang members who rule the streets of Los Angeles. Finally, in his 1990 film The Hot Spot, Hopper commissioned a hybrid soundtrack of jazz/blues by Miles Davis and John Lee Hooker to accompany his steamy neo-noir. My guest today is composer / plug-in developer Sam Fischmann from the plugin company Musik Hack. Musik Hack is the brainchild of both Sam and Grammy-nominated producer and engineer Stan Greene. Their first product is the innovative mastering plugin Master Plan. Sam is a seasoned software developer whose portfolio spans audio/DSP, Web development, and embedded systems. He's obsessed with building creative, functional, major-label-quality products that don't look like airplane cockpits. During the interview we spoke about getting the most from the Master Plan plugin, the different audio needs for different music genres, trends in plugins, how Ai will be used in plugins in the future, and much more. I spoke with Sam via Zoom from his office in Los Angeles. Sam Bankman-Fried indicted on charges for donating $100m in stolen customer funds to US politicians. Donald Trump is indicted for a 4th time. In The Internet: (7:04) It seems that every year there's a new shopping site that gives you the most random shit at cheap prices. This year it's Temu and as it turns out, you can cop knives on there. Seems legit!In Music: (23:20) There was nothing more jarring this year - especially as a Hip-Hop fan - to watch Ice Cube taking Tucker Carlson around LA. Whilst that's a wild example, Hip-Hop people aligning with the right is definitely a trend. In The Arts: (35:14) We all have that creative person that portrays themselves as 'tortured'. Some instinctively believe that you need to go through shit to be a good artist! So are we romanticising the "tortured artist"?
