Show Notes Episode 489: We Built This City on Flake and Blow This week Host Dave Bledsoe puts on a Hawwian shirt, drops a Jimmy Buffett record on the turntable and mixes up a Bahama Mama before anyone figured out that he was not part of the wedding and threw him out of the venue. (This happens a lot.) On the show this week we head south to a city of sun, sand and billions of dollars worth of cocaine, we talk about the Miami Drug Wars! Along the way we discover that a television news man was the most trusted man in Dave's family. Then we dive right into the history of what would become Miami Florida, and the first snow birds who moved there after they retired. From there we get into how the CIA helped kick start the cocaine trade in America. (This isn't just something “funny” Dave said, this happened.) We learn how the Cubans were all murdered by the Colombians (Scarface was a documentary really) and took over the Miami trade for themselves. We meet the scariest woman in Miami (and Bogota, and, well everywhere) before we get down to the business of finding a way to take all the drug money and put it to work.  (Real Estate baby!) Our Sponsor this week is Fast Eddie's Investment Services, investing involves risk and it doesn't get much riskier than Fast Eddie.  We open with Miami news coverage of the drug wars and close with the T Sisters explaining big city commercial real estate. (If you hate the Starship version, you are REALLY going to hate the T Sisters!)  Show Theme: Hypnostate Prelude to Common Sense The Show on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/whatthehellpodcast.bsky.social The Show on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatthehellpodcast/ The Show on Youtube:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjxP5ywpZ-O7qu_MFkLXQUQ The Show on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/whatthehellwereyouthinkingpod/ Our Discord Server: https://discord.gg/kHmmrjptrq Our Website: www.whatthehellpodcast.com Patreon:  https://www.patreon.com/Whatthehellpodcast The Show Line: 347 687 9601 Closing Music: https://youtu.be/3JphLIPqhpg?si=QjZOk1u3m6IU_BoS Buy Our Stuff: https://www.seltzerkings.com/shop Citations Needed: KILLINGS IN FLORIDA OVER DRUGS ON RISE https://www.nytimes.com/1979/07/22/archives/killings-in-florida-over-drugs-on-rise-40-deaths-this-year.html MIAMI CRIME RISES AS DRUGS POUR IN https://www.nytimes.com/1981/08/12/us/miami-crime-rises-as-drugs-pour-in.html America's Drug War https://americanradioworks.publicradio.org/features/drug_wars/story3.html Miami flooded by cocaine cash https://www.upi.com/Archives/1990/02/11/Miami-flooded-by-cocaine-cash/8767634712400/ PBS Frontline: Drug Wars https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/drugs/interviews/mcdonald.html SUSPECT HELD ON $10 MILLION BOND IN A CRACKDOWN ON DRUGS IN MIAMI https://www.nytimes.com/1981/02/28/us/suspect-held-on-10-million-bond-in-a-crackdown-on-drugs-in-miami.html Learn more about your ad choices. We had the pleasure of interviewing Pete Sears of Moonalice over Zoom video! San Francisco-based psychedelic soul group Moonalice is set to release their latest studio EP, ‘Full Moonalice Vol. 1', on the high holy day of April 20. The six song record is the group's label debut on Nettwerk and features the previously released single “Woo Woo” and an extended version of the band's first single, “Time Has Come Today.” ‘Full Moonalice Vol. 1' is their first full body of work since transforming into a ten-piece in 2019 through the addition of Lester Chambers and Dylan Chambers of the New Chambers Brothers, and Erika, Rachel, and Chloe Tietjen of the T Sisters. Today, Moonalice shares “Let's Get Funky,” the latest single from their upcoming EP. Mixed and mastered by 4x-Grammy Award-winning engineer Dave Way, “Let's Get Funky” is a fresh take on the Chambers Brothers' hit “Funky.” Originally released in 1970, the song was written by Lester Chambers, a co-founder and lead vocalist of the Chambers Brothers, who is now a member of Moonalice. “Funky” broke the Billboard Top 100 despite being deemed “too risqué of a song for the time,” explains the 81-year-old Chambers. Moonalice delivers a new version of the song with tight grooving from Pete Sears and John Molo on bass and drums, funky guitar riffs from Barry Sless, an electric synth solo by Jason Crosby, soulful harmonica playing by Lester Chambers, and lively backing vocals from the T Sisters and Dylan Chambers. Moonalice will spend the next few months on the road, touring across California, including festival performances at BottleRock and Skull & Roses. The group is also planning an extra special event in San Francisco to coincide with their annual 4/20 celebration. Stay tuned for more details and national headline dates to be announced soon.We want to hear from you! If you didn’t listen to part 1, you might want to go back to Episode 58 and listen to that one first.  First we will quickly reiterate a few important details: 1.     High Point Market is the largest home furnishings trade show in the world. It brings more than 75,000 people to High Point, N.C., every six months to view product from more than 2,000 exhibitors. 2.     Highpoint market is in the Spring and Fall so the upcoming show is coming up soon - October 19th-23rd. 3.     If you haven’t registered yet, you can still do so at highpointmark.org/register.   3.  OUR FAVORITES  On Episode 58 we talked a lot about the logistics of High Point – where to stay, where to eat and how to get around. On this show we’d like to dig deeper and let you know about some of our favorite showrooms, new news coming out from the Highpoint Market Authority and some great educational opportunities.  A.     Cool Stuff to be Aware Of                 i.         Evening Programming -  HMA is rebranding its popular evening concert series. In the area between Showplace the the Transportation Terminal,  there will be new festivities dubbed “Eats and Beats” where there will be outdoor seating and firepits and (2) areas sponsored by Crate & Barrel and CB2 that will have music, giant outdoor games, cocktails, a dj and a whole lot more.  There will still be (2) concerts by T Sisters and Mandolin Orange.               ii.         Style Spotters -  Keep your eye out for this years Style Spotters who are eight design and fashion leaders who showcase the top new styles for each market.  Look for their black and white cards on products through out the market. We were Style Spotters for 2 years and it was a lot of fun and a lot of work.  This years style spotters are Shayla Copas, Kara Cox, Cynthia Ferguson, Eric Haydel, Benjamin Johnston, Courtney McLeod, Laura Thurman and Erinn Valencich.  This group will be hosting Trend Tours so look those up because some of them require reservations.              iii.         Design Bloggers Tour Hosted by HPMA and Esteem Media – The Design Bloggers Tour will bring (1) leading design bloggers to HPA for a. 2-day tour of sponsoring showrooms. Those bloggers will then be featuring all that they learned on their individual blogs and social media accounts. This is just one of many ways that if you cannot attend market you can still be in the know. Watch out for this bloggers and all they have to share: Sara Malek Barney, Laurence Carr, Lori Dennis, Tim Green, Donna Mancini, Amy Mitchell, Rachel Moriarty, Lisa Peck, Sara Noble and Deborah von Donop.              iv.         HPM Brand Ambassadors – Our friends Jacki Von Tobel and Deb Barrett are newly appointed HPMA Ambassadors. They will be hosting a new-buyer focused 5-day tour that will provide first time attendees a HPM immersion. If I was brand new to High Point, this is the very first thing I would sign up for.               v.         Educational and Social Programming – Do NOT make the mistake of going to HPM and spending every minute of your day looking at product. Your feet and your brain will appreciate you changing gears. Look for events at The Point (https://www.highpointmarket.org/plan-your-trip/the-point), in Highpoint Theatre, Market Suites and in many showrooms.  There are SO many good ones but I few we have our eyes on: 1.     Friday at 8:30am – Breakfast with Tom Felicia at Pandora’s Manor to celebrate 25 years in business. Sponsored by Eastern Accents. 2.     Saturday at 10am at Alden Parkes – “From Set Backs to Success: How to Manage and Grow your Design Firm in the Face of Diversity” with Traci O’Connell. 3.     Saturday at 10am at Woodbridge – “Coffee with Creatives” with Tobi Fairley and Lauren Liess. The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week on the show, Z. speaks with Oakland's soulful singing T Sisters. For this trio of sisters, singing harmony-rich songs isn't just their full time job, it's a way of life. It's what they do - and damn do they do it well. Sisters Erika, Chloe and Rachel are harmonic masters. Whether it's demonstrated in their sassy soulful originals accompanied by upright bass, guitar, banjo and mandolin, or with their delicious vocal-layer-cake covers of Kylie Monogue and Paul Simon hits, family runs deep through our music.
