Show Notes Episode 489: We Built This City on Flake and Blow This week Host Dave Bledsoe puts on a Hawwian shirt, drops a Jimmy Buffett record on the turntable and mixes up a Bahama Mama before anyone figured out that he was not part of the wedding and threw him out of the venue. (This happens a lot.) On the show this week we head south to a city of sun, sand and billions of dollars worth of cocaine, we talk about the Miami Drug Wars! Along the way we discover that a television news man was the most trusted man in Dave's family. Then we dive right into the history of what would become Miami Florida, and the first snow birds who moved there after they retired. From there we get into how the CIA helped kick start the cocaine trade in America. (This isn't just something “funny” Dave said, this happened.) We learn how the Cubans were all murdered by the Colombians (Scarface was a documentary really) and took over the Miami trade for themselves. We meet the scariest woman in Miami (and Bogota, and, well everywhere) before we get down to the business of finding a way to take all the drug money and put it to work. (Real Estate baby!) Our Sponsor this week is Fast Eddie's Investment Services, investing involves risk and it doesn't get much riskier than Fast Eddie. We open with Miami news coverage of the drug wars and close with the T Sisters explaining big city commercial real estate. (If you hate the Starship version, you are REALLY going to hate the T Sisters!) In a Nutshell: The human side of financial planning is, increasingly, where financial planners are delivering the most value to clients. Building those relationships and helping people achieve their life goals can also be incredibly rewarding. But even an expert "people person" still has to deliver on the numbers side as well. Outsourcing your investment management can be one way for advisors to spend more of their time doing what they do best while also ensuring optimal outcomes for clients. On today's show, Mario Nardone explains what an OCIO is and how they work with advisory firms to enhance their investment offering while freeing up the advisors time for other high-value pursuits.

What's the current state of West Coast capital markets? And what role may the recent bank failure play? Co-hosts Bill Condon and Matt McGregor are joined by Colliers Western Region Executive Managing Director of Investment Services – and Ironman – Michael Kendall to talk all things West Coast capital markets. They discuss the recent past of West Coast capital markets, how the role of risk has changed, and what the recent bank failure may mean for potential buyers and investors. Michael gives an overview of the current state of the West Coast market. Typically, Q4 is one of the busiest times for the Colliers West Coast team managed by Michael, but not last year. Both Colliers and its competitors had zero valuations going, then things changed. Michael discusses why he believes that happened. Michael, Bill and Matt talk about the recent bank failure and its potential repercussions on the market. According to Michael, risk didn't matter last year and wasn't priced properly. Now risk matters, maybe even too much as it's being overpriced. Michael explains the difference between a forward (or vacancy) and a short-term wall, and shares his thoughts on the impact of debt on the capital markets world. Michael shares his insights and an example regarding land value in core markets on the West Coast, which have historically been hard to get. What is it about investing that holds folks back from growing their money? Fear. The market's rollercoaster-like peaks and drops keep folks from realizing financial goals like saving for a stress-free retirement or funding higher education. But investing doesn't have to feel like a crazy carnival ride. As hosts Andrea Klunder and Josh Stringer discover, there's a strategy for every investment personality, from risk-averse to more tolerant. A trusted financial adviser can help you pick the right financial product and keep you on track through the fluctuations––with Scott Covey, Financial Advisor, Del Norte Investment Services, and Cynthia Frederick, Service Coordinator, Del Norte Credit Union. Many folks shy away from investing because they think the cost of entry is too prohibitive and the toll on their sanity too great. Not so! DNCU members can opt for guaranteed no-risk accounts and start with as little as $1000. As for less queasy investors, Scott cautions against them going it alone via highly volatile trading platforms. “That should not and just can't be the long-term overall strategy for investments,” he says, especially if your goal is retirement. “You have to have a better long-term outlook.” Clients can count on Del Norte Investment Services to connect them to age-appropriate advice and steady, rather than flashy, opportunities for financial growth. Financial Tea Hot Sip: Don't trust your financial future to friendly suggestions! Consult with the pros (Scott and Cynthia) at Del Norte Investment Services or contact your local credit union to find out what programs and services they can offer. Your team of financial professionals can provide you with reliable strategies to help you reach your goals without worry. Season 4, Episode 7–Part 3: In the current series of Diplomatic Immunity, ISD Director of Programs and Research Dr. Kelly McFarland looks back at the first year of the Biden administration's foreign policy and looks forward to the next. In the final episode of this three-part series, Kelly continues his conversation with Carolyn Brehm and Francine Lamoriello to discuss how the recent escalation of Russia's occupation of Ukraine to a full-scale military invasion has affected global trade, including how it has slowed down the COVID-19 economic recovery, accelerated decoupling of trade, and the long-term impact on globalization. Carolyn Brehm retired from The Procter & Gamble Company as Vice President for Global Government Relations and Public Policy where she created and led P&G's team of sixty government relations practitioners based in key markets across the globe. She was responsible for public policy and legislative advocacy to protect and grow P&G's business, advising three Company CEOs over her seventeen years at P&G. She also oversaw a $24 million P&G Fund supporting initiatives in the communities where P&G operates. During a 13-year stint with General Motors Corporation, Ms. Brehm served as Director of International Trade and Investment Policy, supporting GM's international operations. During two overseas assignments with GM, she established an office in Shanghai in 1984 to conduct countertrade deals and returned to the region in 1996 as Director of Asia-Pacific Trade Policies and Strategy, supporting joint venture projects. She too is a graduate of the School of Foreign Service. Francine Lamoriello is Executive Vice President of Global Strategies for the Personal Care Products Council and directs all international activities and issues. Prior, Francine served as Senior International and Business Strategy Advisor at Baker, Donelson, PC, where she counseled clients on international business strategy and regulatory affairs, and international trade policy. Previously, she served for seven years as Director of International Trade and Investment Services at KPMG Peat Marwick where she led international strategy and marketing studies for a wide variety of U.S. companies. Lamoriello has also held positions at the U.S. Department of Commerce as Director of the European Community Single Market Program and specialized in US-EU trade policy affecting technology companies. And she too, is a graduate of the School of Foreign Service. Episode recorded: April 15 & 20, 2022 Image: Secretary of State Antony J. Season 4, Episode 7--Part 2: In the current series of Diplomatic Immunity, ISD Director of Programs and Research Dr. Kelly McFarland looks back at the first year of the Biden administration's foreign policy and looks forward to the next. In the second episode of a three-part series, Kelly continues his conversation with Wendy Cutler, Carolyn Brehm, and Francine Lamoriello to discuss how the Biden administration has approached trade with allies including the European Union, and the administration's engagement with the business community. Wendy Cutler joined the Asia Society Policy Institute as Vice President and Managing Director of the Washington DC Office in November 2015. She focuses on building ASPI's presence in Washington — strengthening its outreach as a think/do tank — and on leading initiatives that address challenges related to trade and women's empowerment in Asia. She served for nearly three decades as a diplomat and negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). Most recently she served as Acting Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, working on a range of U.S. trade negotiations and initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region. In that capacity, she was responsible for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, including the bilateral negotiations with Japan. She is a graduate of the School of Foreign Service. Decentralized Finance or DeFi Decentralized Finance offers financial instruments without relying on intermediaries such as brokerages, exchanges, or banks. Instead, it uses smart contracts on a blockchain. DeFi platforms allow people to lend or borrow funds from others, speculate on price movements on assets using derivatives, trade cryptocurrencies, insure against risks, and earn interest in savings-like accounts. DeFi uses a layered architecture and highly composable building blocks. Some applications promote high interest rates but are subject to high risk. In this episode, Nico and Sam thoroughly explained what is DeFi all about, the importance and risks involved, how it works and so much more! Subscribe!
