Episode 110 - Join Host Troy Saunders as he chats with singer, songwriter, producer, label owner and just an incredible human, James D-Train Williams! This episode starts with both men reminiscing about their High School alma mater, Erasmus Hall. D Train tells how Will Downing got him into the school's famous Choral Club and started his music career. Both men had fond memories of their old High School and talk about their mutual friends as well as the idea of doing a documentary about the world famous school. Other legends like Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, May West, Clive Davis, Kedar Massenburg, Bernadette Stanis, Gabe Kaplan and so many more have walked their halls. D train explains how, what seemed like overnight, he and his songwriting partner, band member, and mentor, Hubert Eaves III, were on top of the Billboard charts and on tour with George Clinton, Peabo Bryson, Midnight Star, The Deele and so many top acts of that time. He tells how legendary radio DJ, Frankie Crocker, of WBLS in NYC, loved their music and helped to get it played around the country. D Train also explains the thought process behind hits like "Keep On" and "Thank You" and the positive impacted they had on many of his listeners, Troy included. After 5 albums D Train decided not to make another album for almost 20 years. He tells of a performance that helped him in making that decision. D- Train still remained a much sort after session and jingle singer. Working on albums by many of the greats in the industry including Luther Vandross, Gladys Knight, Cher and Michael Jackson. One entertaining story he shared, comes from a session while working on the Michael Jackson "Invincible" album. Hilarious!! Wait until you hear it!Troy and D Train not only talk about music; but they also converse about racism in America, and why many artist prefer performing over seas. D Train also stresses how artist should know their self worth, especially when negotiating their price with promoters. He also expressed his insecurities and how they kept him from releasing new music until now. With pride and excitement D Train informs the listener on some of the great music to expect on his new album; due to be released later this month or in August. They talk about his latest single "Time Has Come Today" and how he was inspired by so many artist including Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding and more. This episode never had a dull moment. Episode 184 “Time Has Come Today” with Jack Wisdom Jack Wisdom and David Capes have been friends for a number of years.  They were elders together for a while of a downtown Houston Church.  Jack is a devoted Christian, whose life has taken a hard turn in the last year.  Perhaps more about that another time.  He stopped by the Lanier Theological Library and joined David Capes on the Stone Chapel Podcasts. Who Is Jack Wisdom? Jack is a successful trial attorney who has lived in Texas for many years.  His practice centers on labor law. He was a Dallas police officer before he and his wife, Diana, moved to Massachusetts so he could study at Gordon Conwell Seminary.  He studied under some of the greats there.  For decade Jack and his wife worked in Young Life.  He's responsible for training, evangelizing, and bringing order to disordered teenage lives.  Now he is the author of 3 books, all of which deserve reading. “Time Has Come Today”  Time Has Come Today is the third book Jack Wisdom has written.  They are definitely worth reading, because they are written by a person who knows whereof he speaks.  He has studied well, works in the original languages, and combines good communication, writing, and humor.  His chapters are short, as are his books.  Taking his cue from Texas singer-songwriter, Robert Earl Keen, Jack makes a case that each moment we live is a gift from God.  It can either be wasted by slacking off or by keeping yourself too busy.  We decide daily, by the hour, by the moment, how to live.  We have an adversarial relationship with time because of the fall. For most people, time is an endless succession of years, months, weeks, days and hour.  Much of that without significance.  But we can and ought to live in matters where this day, today, matters.  Something great, important, life-changing can happen today. Watch particularly for Wisdom's distinction between two Greek words for time: chronos and kairos.  More Resources Click here for a transcript of this podcast.  Click on the title for a link to Jack's books: Time Has Come Today: Time, Eternity, and the Life of Joyful Urgency   Get Low: Reflections on Pride and Humility    Breaking Good: Repentence as a Way of Life More Resources Want more Stone Chapel Podcasts on some great topics? People who take up a life of rock and roll either make music, collect it, write about it, sell it or get into the record business. Harold Bronson has done all of those things. In Time Has Come Today: Rock and Roll Diaries 1967 - 2007, he recounts the fascinating adventure of his musical life. Before he co-founded Rhino Records - America's leading reissue label -- and put decades of rock and roll history back into musical circulation, Bronson was just another devoted fan growing up in Southern California in the 1960s. But with boundless enthusiasm, a discerning ear and a near-photographic memory, he channeled his passion into writing for the UCLA Daily Bruin and then Rolling Stone and other magazines. After meeting and interviewing many of the era's greats, he launched the Rhino label from the back room of the Los Angeles record store he managed. His new role put him behind the scenes with many of those same artists, working to bring their old - and sometimes new -- music to the public. Completing a trilogy with The Rhino Records Story (2013) and My British Invasion (2017), Time Has Come Today is a 40-year memoir in diary form that documents Bronson's progress from student musician and journalist to label executive, where his fandom, wit and creative imagination augmented and altered the course of many great careers.

When we watched the original Nightmare on Elm Street for the show, we were only in our 2nd season and were still relative horror newbies. But it's finally time to explore the entire Fred Krueger canon, and this week we start with a film that has no right to be as interesting and good as it is. The acting still isn't great, the dialogue is atrocious, and the producer made the entire process a nightmare for everyone involved. But the intentional undercurrents of homoeroticism coupled with a totally different take on Freddy's abilities makes this a fun but flawed entry in the canon. We're wrapping up our series with Spike's most recent joint, traveling to Vietnam for a cross between Apocalypse Now and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. It's another bold swing in the new era of Spike, but yet again, the balance is all off. When this movie is working, it's a masterpiece, but there's so much of it that feels like a slog. And it's not because of anything fundamentally wrong with the story, just that there's far too much of it, and far too much pontificating on the story itself. For the cast alone, though, it's a shame this got buried in the COVID shutdown, because they deserve heaps of recognition. Willie Chambers (born March 3, 1938) is a singer, guitarist, and former member of The Chambers Brothers, a rock band in the 1960s with hits "In The Midnight Hour", "I Can't Turn You Loose", and "Time Has Come Today". He continues to be a regular attraction at various venues in Los Angeles and further afield.   Early career Edit Originally from Carthage, Mississippi, the Chambers Brothers first honed their skills as members of the choir in their Baptist church. This arrangement ended in 1952 when the eldest brother, George, was drafted into the Army. George relocated to Los Angeles after his discharge, and his brothers soon joined him. Beginning in 1954, the foursome played gospel and folk music throughout the Southern California region, but remained little known until 1965 when they began performing in New York City. Consisting of George (September 26, 1931 – October 12, 2019)[5] on washtub bass (later on bass guitar Danelectro and Gibson Thunderbird), Lester (b. April 13, 1940) on harmonica, and Willie (b. March 3, 1938) and Joe (b. August 22, 1942) on guitar, the group started to venture outside the gospel circuit, playing at coffeehouses that booked folk acts. They played at places like The Ash Grove, a very popular Los Angeles folk club. It became one of their favorite haunts and brought them into contact with Hoyt Axton, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Reverend Gary Davis, and Barbara Dane. When Dane spotted the brothers there, she knew they would be perfect to do these freedom songs that people wanted to hear then. Dane became a great supporter, performing and recording with the brothers. With the addition of Brian Keenan (January 28, 1943 – October 5, 1985) on drums, Dane took them on tour with her and introduced them to Pete Seeger, who helped put the Chambers Brothers on the bill of the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. One of the songs they performed, "I Got It", appeared on the Newport Folk Festival 1965 compilation LP, which was issued on the Vanguard label. They were becoming more accepted in the folk community, but, like many on the folk circuit, were looking to electrify their music and develop more of a rock and roll sound. Joe Chambers recalled in a May 1994 Goldmine article that people at the Newport Folk Festival were breaking down fences and rushing to the stage. "Newport had never seen or heard anything like that." After the group finished and the crowd finally settled down, the MC came up and said "Whether you know it or not, that was rock 'n' roll." That night they played at a post-concert party for festival performers and went to a recording session of the newly electrified Bob Dylan. Shortly after appearing at Newport, the group released its debut album, People Get Ready. The group recorded "All Strung Out Over You" which was composed by Rudy Clark. It was released on Columbia 4-43957 on December 19, 1966. It was rushed out by Columbia after the label had rejected an early version of "Time Has Come Today". "All Strung Out Over You" became a regional hit for the group which gave them the opportunity to re-record "The Time Has Come Today".

Lester talks with the guys about how to instill habits of happiness instead of negativity within one's self, the incredible story about how he escaped from a sharecropper's farm with his family to move to Los Angeles and begin his music career, and why you need to always put yourself first in life. Lester also tells the guys about how the Chambers Brothers had to sneak into the studio at night to record "The Time Has Come" with no overdubs, how his brother gave Lightning Hopkins the idea for his signature slicked back hair look, and much more. Lester Chambers is the lead singer of the 1960s soul rock group, The Chambers Brothers. The Chambers Brothers are a psychedelic soul band best known for their eleven-minute 1967 hit, "Time Has Come Today" (ring any bells?). He has released multiple albums as a solo artist, and was recently featured in Questlove's Summer of Soul documentary. Lester keeps the spirit of the Chambers Brothers alive in The New Chambers Brothers alongside his son Dylan. ----------- *DISCLAIMER: This podcast does NOT provide medical advice. Even by the lofty standards of the late '60s, The Chambers Brothers were visionaries, blending rock, gospel and psychedelia into a musical bouillabaisse seasoned with social awareness. Lester is the third of the four Brothers, who were joined by a white drummer named Brian Keenan. The Chambers family is from Mississippi, but they formed their band in Los Angeles after the oldest brother, George, was discharged from the Army and settled there. "He went to California because he no longer wanted his brothers and sisters to grow up in a place like Mississippi," Lester says. "We got in the car one night and drove up. And, after two-and-a-half to three days we wound up in California, but it was a struggle getting out of Mississippi on the road." They started performing in 1961 and added Keenan in 1965, the year they earned great acclaim with a performance at the Newport Folk Festival, where they went electric hours before Bob Dylan. Their first album, The Time Has Come, was released in 1967 and includes their masterpiece "Time Has Come Today," a song that still rings true five decades later. That album also includes "Uptown," a song you can see the band perform in the documentary Summer Of Soul. We had the pleasure of interviewing Pete Sears of Moonalice over Zoom video! San Francisco-based psychedelic soul group Moonalice is set to release their latest studio EP, ‘Full Moonalice Vol. 1', on the high holy day of April 20. The six song record is the group's label debut on Nettwerk and features the previously released single “Woo Woo” and an extended version of the band's first single, “Time Has Come Today.” ‘Full Moonalice Vol. 1' is their first full body of work since transforming into a ten-piece in 2019 through the addition of Lester Chambers and Dylan Chambers of the New Chambers Brothers, and Erika, Rachel, and Chloe Tietjen of the T Sisters. Today, Moonalice shares “Let's Get Funky,” the latest single from their upcoming EP. Mixed and mastered by 4x-Grammy Award-winning engineer Dave Way, “Let's Get Funky” is a fresh take on the Chambers Brothers' hit “Funky.” Originally released in 1970, the song was written by Lester Chambers, a co-founder and lead vocalist of the Chambers Brothers, who is now a member of Moonalice. “Funky” broke the Billboard Top 100 despite being deemed “too risqué of a song for the time,” explains the 81-year-old Chambers. Moonalice delivers a new version of the song with tight grooving from Pete Sears and John Molo on bass and drums, funky guitar riffs from Barry Sless, an electric synth solo by Jason Crosby, soulful harmonica playing by Lester Chambers, and lively backing vocals from the T Sisters and Dylan Chambers. Moonalice will spend the next few months on the road, touring across California, including festival performances at BottleRock and Skull & Roses. The group is also planning an extra special event in San Francisco to coincide with their annual 4/20 celebration. Stay tuned for more details and national headline dates to be announced soon.We want to hear from you! TV fanatic Pam, one of the generous donors to our fundraising campaign benefiting the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, and Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles, joins us for the grooviest episode ever of Beverly Hills, 90210. We first met Pam in person when she let us sneak closer to the stage to sit with her at an “I Love the ‘90s” throwback concert featuring Color Me Badd, Kid ‘n Play, Tone Loc, and Vanilla Ice - so you know she's a kindred spirit. Special thanks to Shaun Fisher for performing the winners of our “David Silver's Best Rap of the 20th Century” contest!

Wild Blue Yonder: A Novel of the 1960s

Their last days on Socrates Island and dissent fills the air. Alan tries to talk the other troops into going AWOL and, well, you gotta listen to believe it. Yep, they go back, but not the same guys who’d left a month earlier. Especially not Nate. They march right into one political foray after another. What’s this with Lieutenant Antonucci offering Nate redemption? Redemption?  And what has Milo learned about Nate’s enlistment from his astute review of the regs? If you haven’t heard “Time Has Come Today” by the Chambers Brothers, the song that gave this chapter its title, now is a good time to do so. It may help put the times into perspective so you can ponder what the comment Nate makes to Tony in a stoned, 3 o’clock in the morning conversation means: “the whole universe is watching us through the window, to see if we get it figured out.”

Hola! Welcome back! In this profoundly great program, we provide a look at a recent statement made by the current Prez, and we study the myths, confusion and deceptions in the statement. Then, we use the statement to explain some fundamentals about economics, how regulation is bad, how international trade is good, and how outsourcing is beneficial to living standards of the country buying the service and the people being employed! This show also includes music by The Horrors "Three Decades", The Sons of Hercules "No, No, NO", David Bowie "Ashes to Ashes", DMZ "Bad Attitude", Pete Shelley "Homosapien", Killing Joke "Asteroid", The chambers Brothers "Time (Has Come Today)", The Dukes of Stratosphear (XTC) "What In The World?", and The Psychedelic Furs "Yes I Do" (aka "Merry-Go-Round" in the UK)...
