The Reformed Faith and Family Podcast is hosted by Caleb and Lindsey Stomberg. Every Tuesday our listeners can expect a new episode to drop exploring Reformed Theology, Family Discipleship, and more all from a Christian Worldview. Our theology matters and it influences every part of our life - how we think, how we interact with our family, how we serve in our local church, and how we share the Gospel with the world around us. Our mission is to equip families as they build godly homes, leaving a legacy and advancing the kingdom of Christ.
God has clearly set the boundaries of human authorities in His Word: civil, church, and family. Do you know what the Bible has to say about the rightful role of government? Listen in on this conversation as Caleb and Lindsey discuss the Bible's teachings concerning how Christians ought to relate to governing authorities and the Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates. This episode, Part 8 on God's Word as our ultimate authority, is a part of an ongoing series on Building a Thoroughly Christian Worldview. Everyone has a worldview whether they realize it or not, and more than likely their worldview is not consistent with itself. The Bible is our only standard for all of life and truth. We are called to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). We can only do this by knowing God's Word. Listen in to this multipart series as Caleb and Lindsey discuss what a worldview is, how to evaluate your worldview for inconsistencies, and also ways to apply God's Word and mission to every area of your life. As disciples we are meant to have a "Kingdom Mindset." Many Christians today have more of a defeatist mindset and live defensively instead of offensively. The Christian's worldview directly applies to how Christians engage the culture, and this is what we will be discussing in future episodes during this series. **THIS MONTH'S SPONSOR:** Christian Light Education Read Lindsey's Personal Review of CLE's Horticulture Today High School Elective: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/teach-valuable-life-skills/ Read Lindsey's Personal Review of CLE's Learning to Read Program: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/learning-to-read-cle-review/ Visit Christian Light Education's Website: https://christianlight.org/shop-curriculum >> **FREE** Christian Worldview Family Field Guide >> Download Your Copy Now! >> All resources listed in this episode can be found on the Reformed Faith and Family Recommended Resources page here. One of the great rallying cries of the Protestant Reformation was “Scripture Alone,” or if you prefer the Latin, “Sola Scriptura.” The chief opponent for the trust of men at the time wasn't public institutions, academics and scientists, or even directly the state. They fought against the tyranny of Roman Catholicism which claimed ultimate authority to declare truth and speak for God. In the Reformation everyone understood that control over the voice of God was at stake. Either God's Word would be allowed to stand for itself, and correct every other voice, or the Pope would reserve the right to yield God's voice and decree and interpret as he willed. We no longer find ourselves in a society where everyone acknowledges the true God. The dominant god of this society against which we war is the god of the state, with its promises of elevating humanity and solving our every problem. Politicians, academic elites, and experts of every variety all labor to yield the power of whatever god they serve. This episode, Part 7 on God's Word as our ultimate authority, is a part of an ongoing series on Building a Thoroughly Christian Worldview. Everyone has a worldview whether they realize it or not, and more than likely their worldview is not consistent with itself. The Bible is our only standard for all of life and truth. We were honored to have Mitchell Earl from DiscoverPraxis.com join us this week for a really fascinating conversation about the myth of the college degree and the educational program that he has helped design for young adults who want to skip the college debt and go straight for the successful career. The kind of one-on-one mentorship, guidance, and accountability that they provide at Praxis is truly unique, and we believe that homeschooling families in particular will find what they have to offer very intriguing. >> Don't forget to sign up for the FREE 45-minute workshop available to all Reformed Faith and Family Podcast listeners: "5 tips for Opting Out of College Successfully!" Listen in on Caleb and Lindsey's conversation concerning how Christians ought to relate to philosophy. They share practical resources to educate both yourself and arm your family against the secular philosophies of our day. It is important to ask yourself the question, "Why do I believe or do this or that?" As Christians we ought to be purposeful. Philosophical questions get to the root of why we exist and what our duty is to our neighbor. These answers are found in God's Word alone, therefore Christians ought to be the most confident in sharing these foundational truths with the very confused world around us. In Part 3 of the Spiritual Disciplines series, Caleb and Lindsey discuss the need for Christians to practice evangelism and service as a lifestyle. Many Christians do not know how to begin a conversation about Christ with another person they don't know, or how to serve others within their church or community without a church program to facilitate their spiritual gifts. These spiritual disciplines are not optional, but should be an integral part of everyday life for the Christian not only initiated on a limited basis. How much do you know about Martin Luther? Martin Luther is a monk turned Protestant Reformer. His nailing the 95 Theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, Germany on October 31, 1517 is considered to be the spark that lit the Protestant Reformation. Now, Martin never intended to cause a schism in the church, but God used Luther to reveal the cancerous corruption that had grown in the Roman Catholic Church and brought the Scriptures to the common man through Luther's translation of the Bible into German, the common vernacular. Martin Luther's story is one of epic adventure and faith-building miracles as you see how God unfolded his sovereign plan for his glory and the good of his people. Join us as we discuss the story of Martin Luther's Life with Author Danika Cooley from ThinkingKidsPress.com. We will be discussing her book When Lightning Struck!: The Story of Martin Luther. This season is all about being intentional as Christians in every area of our lives. One of those important areas is in the education of our children. The topic of slavery is a contentious one in our society for a myriad of reasons. It is difficult enough tackling this topic among adults, but many parents struggle with how to introduce this heavy subject with young children. Join us as we discuss how to teach children about slavery from a Christian worldview with our guest, Author Danika Cooley from ThinkingKidsPress.com. How should a Christian approach holidays? Some Christians choose not to celebrate any holidays. Other Christians choose to go along with the flow and celebrate holidays as they were taught, and often very similarly to how the world celebrates (i.e. Halloween, Santa, Easter Bunny). A growing number of Christians are opting to be more intentional in their approach to holidays, doing their research concerning the roots of certain holidays, and instituting purposeful traditions that point their families to Christ. Of course this is a spectrum and not everyone lands in the same place, and that's okay. Our goal in this podcast is to help Christians think through some of those details and at least start you down a path of intentionality in your celebrations. Let us know what you think by leaving a 5-star review or leaving a comment. We would love to hear what traditions you have in your home! We grew up ignorant of history and entrenched in modern evangelical culture. This church culture led us to believe that it was most beneficial to shop around for our future spouse by dating a lot of duds until we found "the one." After seeing the myriad of pitfalls inherent in this model, we have opted for a different way in helping our children find a spouse. Join us in this episode as we define the courtship model, and discuss biblical principles of for finding one's spouse. In the end, the terminology we use doesn't matter. The word courtship does not find its roots in Scripture; the principles for finding a spouse, however, are revealed in Scripture. To be truly consistent in our application of those principles, we ought to be intentional to not just follow the course set by the world, or what is considered normal in broader evangelicalism, but align ourselves with God's Word in every area of our lives, including this area of finding a spouse. Welcome to Season 2 of the Reformed Faith and Family Podcast! In Season 1, we laid a foundation for what Reformed theology is, and the impact it has on the home. Our mission at Reformed Faith and Family is to equip Christian households to disciple their children and leave a legacy of faith for generations to come. In Season 2, we are going to discuss many practical areas of life where we found early in our marriage that we were not living consistently according to Scripture. After becoming Reformed, we became increasingly aware that we, like many other Christians, had generally accepted normal evangelical culture and had never really thought about what it would look like to think and live consistently with what we claim to believe. You may not land where we do concerning these matters, but our primary goal is to highlight those areas where Christians ought to think more intentionally. We pray that you will join us for Season 2 of the Reformed Faith and Family Podcast, and that it is a blessing to your family as you seek to intentionally live out the Gospel in every aspect of your life. >> Visit our website at ReformedFaithandFamily.com >> Check out our Recommended Resources. >> Browse our Educational Resources and SWAG. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/reformed-faith-and-family/message
During Season 1 of the Reformed Faith and Family Podcast, we have been leading up to this discussion topic. Leaving a legacy both biologically and spiritually is how we build the Kingdom of God on this earth. The evangelical church has been blinded by a pessimistic eschatology inundated by the humanist philosophies of our culture. But the Bible has given us this vision of the victorious King now reigning, and the future Kingdom coming. God is working through His people as He always has to accomplish His wonderful works and to bring Himself glory. Join in this discussion as Caleb and Lindsey talk about what it means to grasp the vision, the joy, and the hope that is leaving a faithful legacy. In the first episode on biblical marriage, we touched on how foundational the marriage of one man and one woman and the growing of families is to building God's Kingdom. In this second episode on biblical marriage, we discuss Ephesians 5, and what headship and submission are meant to look like in light of God's Word. Men are called to lead and love their wives, and women are called to submit and respect their husbands. Both are called to follow the Lord in obedience and raise children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. These truths are not popular in today's culture. Marriage between one man and one woman and the building of families is foundational to what it means to be human. We see this in how God created both man and woman in the garden to function best when two are made one in the marital bond. Without a strong foundation in a marriage families will not thrive and societies cannot be sustained. Listen in as Caleb and Lindsey discuss how Christians should view marriage from a biblical worldview and disentangle themselves from the spirit of the age so that they may be conformed to Christ. Women have a problem today. Women are in this epic moment in history where they can have it all, but statistics show that women are not happy. The culture will repudiate this by claiming that women are still too oppressed, but the Christian looking through a biblical lens can only see it one way. Women are unhappy because they are walking outside the boundaries God has set for them. Listen in on Episode 12: "Understanding God's Design for Women" as Caleb and Lindsey diagnose the problems they see today in society at large and in the modern church, and contrast that with what the Bible has to say about a God's design for women. In Episode 10 on Raising Real Men, we began by diagnosing the problems we see as rampant in both our society and in the church. The root of these problems are found in the lack of real men, specifically real, Christian men in leadership. Due to men's failure at leading, we have seen a rise in the promotion of anything feminine and the simultaneous demonization of anything masculine. This has led to an environment where male role models are not only hard to be found, but society as a whole works against developing real masculinity according to God's design. Have you ever considered that the majority position of the modern church today is to hold readily to the Ten Commandments with the exception of the fourth commandment to remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy? We live in a culture that is self-centered and chronically distracted. It is an unpopular message to preach that an entire day is to be set aside to worship the Lord and rest from our earthly cares. We make the case that a command rooted in Creation is above any covenantal or cultural arguments. The call to Sabbath rest is more than just a suggestion, because in Old Testament Israel the punishment was death for not observing it. This is a command to take seriously. Listen in as Caleb and Lindsey discuss the theological basis for Sabbath rest, alternative views concerning it, as well as some practical tips to guide you and your family as you intentionally observe this command. Voddie Baucham once said, "The church does not meet as often as the home. Thus, if Christ is to be worshipped daily, it is incumbent upon the home to play an important spiritual role. Consequently, fathers, as heads of households, are thrust into a pastoral role." In this episode 7, we will be addressing both the history and value of family worship. There is much need for parents to be concerned with the spiritual welfare of their children. As the head of the home, men specifically are tasked with this role to care for the souls of his wife and children. Family Worship is a biblically mandated practice as well as a historic norm within pious Christian homes. It is a discipline that needs to be reclaimed by the modern Christian desiring to train his children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. So we encourage you to listen in as we discuss this discipline, as well as our personal experiences. We also give tips and tricks we've learned along the way with seven children. We pray it is a blessing to you! WE HAVE A FAVOR TO ASK! For those who see how many kids grow up in the church and then flee the first chance they get in adulthood - that is a complicated issue with layers of answers - but one of the primary concerns should be the modern church's absolute neglect in equipping parents to disciple their own children. It wasn't until the latter half of the twentieth century that Christian parents began wholly relegating the discipleship of their children to the Church. This shift in church practice coincides (not so coincidentally) with a huge shift in mandated government education and welfare. Instead of equipping parents for their God-given duties, the Church, just like the State, co-opted a role that was not given to them by God. And in like fashion, parents became accustomed to others caring for their child's souls and forgot their God-given purpose. This is a hard conversation, but it is an important conversation. We hope you will join us, and let us know about your experience! The Bible is our authority for all faith and practice. We need to get back to what the Bible has to say concerning role of the Church and the role of parents. We should never settle for what is culturally acceptable or convenient. >> Read the Corresponding Article to this Podcast Episode: The Case for Family Integrated Worship WE HAVE A FAVOR TO ASK! Many Christians do not feel at home in their current church. They may feel like outsiders because they do not align theologically with that church, or maybe they haven't found community there. These Christians might see an issue with their current church's government structures or teaching. In this episode of the Reformed Faith and Family Podcast, Caleb and Lindsey are going to be discussing what makes a church a church, as well as those questions one needs to ask in order to consider whether or not he should leave a church to find a new one or stay and commit to his current church. There are many reasons someone might want to reconsider the church that they are attending, but church membership is a serious commitment and should never be taken lightly. If you have been considering finding a more solid church, this episode is for you. WE HAVE A FAVOR TO ASK! This episode is Part III of a multi-part series answering the question, "What does it mean to be Reformed?" We get asked this question often since Caleb is the pastor of a Reformed Baptist Church. Our go-to answer is that being Reformed means that we are "Calvinistic, Covenantal, and Confessional." We utilize these "3-C's" to help us explain the Gospel from a Reformed Christian worldview. Reformed Christians have a rich heritage. In this episode, we will discuss the third of these "3-C's," which is Confessionalism, or what it means to hold to a Confession.
