Károly Póka, ancient technology researcher, sits down at CAMP to reveal the secrets of impossibly precise artifacts. Károly dives into how the ancient stone vases and Egypt's perfect boxes were truly made, and challenges the narrative that they were crafted by hand...WELCOME TO CAMP!
Vases crafted thousands of years ago, temples built by past civilisations, natural parks with stunning waterfalls. These are all tangible things, there is a physical trace of them and many times they are protected and valued. But what about festivals, recipes or dances and skills that are unique to a certain part of the world? These cannot be stored, really. However they are passed on, become part of many people's identities and are known as intangible cultural heritage. UNESCO, the United Nations agency that focuses on culture and education has released its yearly list recognising these practices. But what does it actually mean to be included and why is it celebrated? We hear from Matthieu Guevel, Chief of Communications at UNESCO.Plus we talk to three people whose cultural practices have been added to the list this year: Paola Maggiulli a British-Italian cook, Lika Kat, a content creator from Kyrgyzstan and Zahra Hankir, a Lebanese author and journalist.Instagram: @bbcwhatintheworld Email: whatintheworld@bbc.co.uk WhatsApp: +44 0330 12 33 22 6 Presenter: Chelsea Coates Producers: Maria Clara Montoya and Benita Barden Editor: Verity Wilde
Le principe des vases communicants ne marche pas au Gondwana. Il y a les quartiers d'en-haut-de-en-haut, d'un côté, et les quartiers d'en-bas-de-en-bas, de l'autre. In this episode, I'm honored to chat with Lynn Hardy—actor, producer, and founder of The Aging Games—to explore what it really means to reinvent yourself at any age. After a thriving business career, Lynn returned to acting at 55, now starring in the film Vases and co-producing Magdalena's Land. She shares her journey of trusting her inner voice, letting go of self-doubt, and stepping into a new chapter with courage and grace.Together, we dive into what it takes to:Reclaim your power and rewrite your story after decades of “shoulds.”Build self-worth that isn't tied to age, appearance, or others' approval.Set boundaries that create freedom instead of guilt.Approach aging as an expansion of purpose, vitality, and wisdom. If you've ever felt the tug of change but questioned whether it's “too late,” this conversation will remind you—it's never too late to begin again.
John is joined by Hayley Williams and producer Daniel James to discuss how they wrote and recorded the album ‘Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party'. Hayley Williams is an American pop-punk and rock musician. She began writing songs in her early teens, signing a deal with Atlantic Records at just 15 years old. The label wanted her to be a solo artist, but Hayley had other ideas, instead forming the band Paramore with three school friends. Paramore released their first album ‘All We Know Is Falling' when Hayley was still only 16. They quickly built a loyal fanbase as audiences resonated with the energy and passion in their music. The band went on to release five more albums and win numerous awards including three Grammys. In 2020 Hayley released her first, highly acclaimed solo album ‘Petals for Armor'. Sophomore album ‘FLOWERS for VASES/descansos' followed in 2021 to further critical praise. ‘Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party', released in August this year on Hayley's own label Post Atlantic, is her third collaboration with musician, producer and longtime friend Daniel James. In this episode, Hayley and Daniel sit down with John at Platoon Studios to discuss how it felt setting out to record songs without an album in mind, how writing solo music differs from writing for Paramore for Hayley, the record's diverse influences, the vocal recording techniques they used and much more. Join Dave and Bethlie as they embark on this multi-part series on the book Shepherding a Child's Heart by Tedd Tripp. What is the point of the book? It is written to parents with children of any age and provides perspectives and procedures for shepherding your child's heart into the paths of life. Several things stand out in Part 1 His comments about Behavior on page 4 If behavior becomes our only focus, we miss an important part of training “Parents often get sidetracked with behavior. If your goal in discipline is changed behavior, it is easy to understand why this happens. . . . You think you have corrected when you have changed unacceptable behavior to behavior that you sanction and appreciate. “What is the problem? You ask. The problem is this: Your child's needs are far more profound than his aberrant behavior . . . If you are to really help him, you must be concerned with the attitudes of heart that drive his behavior. “ “A change in behavior that does not stem from a change in heart is not commendable; it is condemnable.” Don't miss the balance there . . . “What must you do in correction and discipline? You must require proper behavior. God's law demands that. You cannot, however, be satisfed to leave the matter there. You must help your child . . . expose the attitude of the heart that has resulted in wrong behavior.” A few suggestions from be and Bethlie If your child is younger, behavior is the first priority. They don't understand yet, but you can't wait until they have the capacity to reason and think. You will be way behind if you do. So go ahead and focus on their behavior. Give me your attention. As they then begin to grow and understand, you can then begin working on their heart. Give me your heart His comments about influences that shape who a person is and what they become as a result What are the influences? Structure of their family life Family Values Illustration of Vases or Disobedience on p 12 Family Roles Family Conflict Resolution Family Response to Failure Family History What are the mistakes we often make regarding these influences? We assume they are just helpless victims because of their We assume they are unaffected by their experiences We rely on determinism: if the environment is right, the kid will turn out right We have to remember that the clay is not passive This is why the heart is so important
Kyle delivers his latest presentation on Gobekli Tepe and the wider "Tas Tepeler Civilization" topic. How far back do these ancient megaliths really go? Potters from around the world showed off their latest creations at Ceramic Art London, the largest high-end ceramics show in the UK. Returning to the capital for its 21st year, more than 6,000 people were expected to visit to see some of the best ceramic creations on sale. Everywhere you look are beautiful ceramic creations, from functional vases, sculptural pieces, and abstract forms. One of the most striking artists to display this year was Lucy Baxendale, whose interactive display of fantastical monsters impressed the visitors. This friendly-looking ceramic tree monster has a surprise—if you dare to stick your hand inside its mouth (don't worry, he doesn't bite!). By tickling the tonsils at the back of the monster's throat, another head prints out a poetic and inspirational receipt for visitors to consider. Baxendale, originally from Durham in the northeast of England, explains, "Yeah. If you put your hand into the monster's mouth, it will print you out something that you can take away. And my hope is that that kind of spreads out into the world and maybe inspires something else." All of the riddle-like receipts were written by Baxendale, and she collaborated with her father (an electrical engineer) to produce her piece. "What would a broken vase dream about? Sketch the cracked pieces and reassemble them into something new," said one receipt. A show visitor from Peru was blown away by the tree monster and said it was, "Super fun. I think this is amazing. Because behind the complicated work and the kind of like graffiti, tattoo kind of work, you find something very soft." Ceramic Art London is organized each year by the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain and continues to grow in size and importance. It ran from May 9 to 11 at London's Olympia. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

We actually recorded this just before we left for Egypt in March this year; it's been in the hopper for a while! Dan Friday, a Native American craftsman and professional glassmaker, joins us to talk about his fascination with glass artifacts of ancient Egypt. Dan was with us on one of our Egypt tours a few years ago, and shared some of his fascination with us at the time. Along with glassmaking and ancient glass, we also discuss the egyptian vases, the fascinating topic of the Rupert's Drop, connections between ancient mythologies, and much more. Join us, Ben from UnchartedX, Adam Young, and Karoly Poka for an afternoon at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where we will peruse their collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts, then we will move to the Explorer's Club for dinner and presentations from us and Ben!https://eveningattheexplorersclub.eventbrite.com/Join our Patreon, support the show, get extra content and early access!https://www.patreon.com/brothersoftheserpentSupport the show with a paypal donation:https://paypal.me/snakebros

We recorded this in a hotel room right next to the Giza Plateau in Egypt, and we spend the first hour discussing the results of the now-famous Synthetic Aperture Radar scans of the Khafre Pyramid, and the claims of large structures hidden in the bedrock below the pyramid proper. We also talk a bit about the strange "well shaft" of the Great Pyramid, which we explored again this year, and the mysterious "Grotto" chamber at the top of the well shaft. Finally, we read some very interesting new findings by physicist Max Fomitchev-Zamilov in the subject of the Egyptian stone vases. Max has discovered that there is a higher concentration of radioactive elements in vases of higher quality and precision, at least in the limited samples he has been able to scan. We read about his preliminmary results from his website, which can be found here:https://maximus.energy/index.php/2025/03/30/excess-of-thorium-232-in-ancient-egyptian-stone-vessels/We also read from a related article on Max's website, about "nuclear machining", a technique that Max says could explain the seeming ease with which the ancient vases were manufactured, as well as the higher concentration of radioactive materials in the quality samples.https://maximus.energy/index.php/2025/01/14/nuclear-machining-hypothesis/Join us, Ben from UnchartedX, Adam Young, and Karoly Poka for an afternoon at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where we will peruse their collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts, then we will move to the Explorer's Club for dinner and presentations from us and Ben!https://eveningattheexplorersclub.eventbrite.com/Join our Patreon, support the show, get extra content and early access!https://www.patreon.com/brothersoftheserpentSupport the show with a PayPal donation:https://paypal.me/snakebros

In this fascinating episode, nuclear scientist Dr. Max returns toshare groundbreaking updates on his ancient vase scanning project. We dive into the latest findings from the new vase analyses, explore the shocking connections between radiation and these mysterious artifacts, and discuss the possibility that radioactive tools may have been used — and even purposefully stored — by ancient civilizations. Dr. Max also presents a bold new nuclear hypothesis surrounding the vases' origins, offers fresh insights into the function of the elusive vase handles, and finally ties it all together in a powerful theory you won't want to miss. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss eighteenth century 'vase-mania'. In the second half of the century, inspired by archaeological discoveries, the Grand Tour and the founding of the British Museum, parts of the British public developed a huge enthusiasm for vases modelled on the ancient versions recently dug up in Greece. This enthusiasm amounted to a kind of ‘vase-mania'. Initially acquired by the aristocracy, Josiah Wedgwood made these vases commercially available to an emerging aspiring middle class eager to display a piece of the Classical past in their drawing rooms. In the midst of a rapidly changing Britain, these vases came to symbolise the birth of European Civilisation, the epitome of good taste and the timelessness that would later be celebrated by John Keats in his Ode on a Grecian Urn.WithJenny Uglow Writer and Biographer Rosemary Sweet Professor of Urban History at the University of LeicesterAndCaroline McCaffrey-Howarth Lecturer in the History of Art at the University of EdinburghProducer: Eliane GlaserReading list:Viccy Coltman, Fabricating the Antique: Neoclassicism in Britain 1760–1800 (University of Chicago Press, 2006)David Constantine, Fields of Fire: A Life of Sir William Hamilton (Phoenix, 2002)Tristram Hunt, The Radical Potter: Josiah Wedgwood and the Transformation of Britain (Allen Lane, 2021)Ian Jenkins and Kim Sloan (eds), Vases and Volcanoes: Sir William Hamilton and his Collection (British Museum Press, 1996)Berg Maxine, Luxury and Pleasure in Eighteenth-Century Britain (Oxford University Press, 2005)Iris Moon, Melancholy Wedgwood (MIT Press, 2024)Rosemary Sweet, Grand Tour: The British in Italy, c.1690–1820 (Cambridge University Press, 2012)Jenny Uglow, The Lunar Men: The Friends who Made the Future (Faber and Faber, 2003)In Our Time is a BBC Studios Audio production

We know we need to shift from our Trauma Culture to a resilient, connected Initiation Culture where we can open our heart-minds to the Web of Life, ask 'What do you Want of Me?' and respond to the answers in realtime, with flexibility, authenticity and a grounded awareness of our place in the huge complex system of the More than Human World. Knowing this, and being able to do it are two different things. But it's possible, and our guest this week is someone who walks this path with enormous grace and huge integrity.Cynthia Jurs met her root teacher, Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh in the early 1980s, and in 1994 received his transmission of Dharmacharya, becoming a teacher in his tradition, the Order of Interbeing. In 1990 she traveled to a remote cave, 13,000 feet up in the mountains of Nepal to meet the 106-year-old Lama Kushok Mangden Rinpoche, from whom she received an assignment - she was to engage with an ancient tradition of Earth Treasure Vases - that's our English transliteration. The actual translation is 'vessels giving life-essence to the earth'. And so she did. She received these small pottery vessels and has spent the past 34 years making pilgrimages around the world to engage in sacred practice with local communities, gathering prayers and whatever is sacred to the people of the land she is in, as an offering to be interred with these vessels in the earth. There have been three generations of vases, and there may be a fourth so that in the end, there are 108 of them. The practice is still on-going and engages people all around the world. In 2018 she was given the honorary title of Lama at Tolu Tharling Gompa in Nepal by Ngawang Tsultrim Zangpo Rinpoche. She has written of her experiences in a book, 'Summoned by the Earth: Becoming a Holy Vessel for Healing our World,' and if you're interested at all in how we can connect with the web of life, I absolutely encourage you to read it. These days, inspired by her years of service and connection with others who care, Cynthia is forging a new path of dharma in service to Gaia—a path deeply rooted in the feminine, honouring indigenous cultures, and devoted to collective awakening. If you want to join her, Cynthia leads meditations, retreats, courses, and pilgrimages to support the emergence of a global community of engaged and embodied sacred activists. You can find her offerings and join the global healing community at: www.GaiaMandala.net and there is more about her book at https://www.summonedbytheearth.org/Her book is here: https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/summoned-by-the-earth-becoming-a-holy-vessel-for-healing-our-world-cynthia-jurs/7556979?ean=9781632261328
We discuss some very interesting new developments in the maverick research being done on the ancient stone vases from Egypt. Ben and Russ took a trip to Florida to get some fragments of vases examined using a Scanning Electron Microscope. No copper was found, but there were traces of other metals that the ancient Egyptians are not supposed to have had access to. We were streaming this live, so we were also responding to questions from the chat. You can watch the youtube version here:https://www.youtube.com/live/z2ZwN7bcDPY?si=YiN3aGzHMTL5vnsB
