In this episode of the Learning While Working Podcast, Terry Pearce, the founder of Unfold Play, joins the show for a discussion on engaging learning through play. Terry shares strategies for game-based learning and the six levers that make games effective for learning. He also gives examples of how putting learners at the centre of the learning experience can transform seemingly dry content into engaging and effective learning activities.About Terry PearceTerry Pearce founded Untold Play to bring together his twin passions of learning design and games. Terry leverages the power of games and gamification in learning, and he regularly weaves the principles of game-based learning into the learning experiences he creates. He has won awards, through the London NHS Modernisation Agency, Reed Learning and the Healthcare People Management Association, for the services I deliver to clients, including HSBC, Imperial College Hospital, Thames Water and Zurich.Key takeaways:Putting learners at the centre: Games engage learners by making them the protagonists, setting open challenges, letting them explore, embracing failure, offering meaningful choices, and nudging them towards desired behaviours. This shift places the focus on the learner and encourages active participation in the learning process.Debriefing for reflection: Terry stressed the significance of debriefing in learning experiences. The "What happened, So what, Now what" framework allows learners to process their experiences, make generalisations, and consider behavioural changes as they apply their learnings to real-world scenarios.Transform Deck: Terry introduced the Transform Deck of learning design cards, which is a valuable tool for creating engaging, learner-centred activities. The deck serves as a point of inspiration for turning content into interactive, experiential learning experiences, providing a spectrum of options beyond traditional games and gamification.Segmented time stamps:(00:00) Introduction(04:56) Games thrive on failure, meaningful choices and nudges(09:18) Embrace play and games for healthy benefits(11:08) Creating engaging learning experiences through interactive games(14:54) Virtual escape room featuring games-based learning(18:41) Dice game simulates cultural immersion and adaptation(22:15) Deck of cards for inspiring learner-focused activities(25:12) Align objectives, culture, and methods for learningLinks from the podcast:Connect with Terry on LinkedInVisit Terry's WebsiteCheck out The Transform DeckRead more about The Six Levers

There are many people who think they want to be a matador, only to find themselves in the ring with 2,000 pounds of bull bearing down on them, and then they discover that what they really wanted was to wear tight pants and hear the crowd roar. – Terry Pearce Over 20 years ago, I found myself navigating a man's world but largely feeling like a boy. Balancing a young marriage, young children, and a young career had punted me into the deep end. Though I was thirsty for God and his Kingdom and doing my best to pursue good and noble endeavors, I was running out of steam. It was a baptism into adulthood by the fire of overwhelm. “It felt like I hopped on a rollercoaster that I didn't remember getting on—it was all I could do to simply hold on.” That's how an older friend described this nexus of pressure and responsibility and it felt spot on. Life became something that happened to me, rather than something to which I was bringing strength and intentionality from a reservoir of confidence and peace. Money felt scarce, and time scarcer still. In response, the myriad of uninitiated little boys in my soul began to surface, leading me to one of the most important days of my life: The day that I traded my exclamation points for question marks. The day that the Spirit invited me to a path of connected initiation instead of isolating performance. And it's made all the difference. We're more than a decade into hosting intimate leadership events with apprentices both young and old from around the globe to chase after the treasures of the Kingdom. Now two decades from beginning this quest, it is my joy to invite the extended Become Good Soil Tribe of apprentices to this audio teaching from the 2019 Become Good Soil Intensive. Join me for Part 1 of an extended podcast series diving deep into the restoration of the masculine soul. For the Kingdom,
Terry Pearce has been in Learning & Development since 2000. After five years progressing from delivering to managing training in the UK's National Health Service, he started freelancing as a consultant. Terry has worked with a huge range of organizations over the last fifteen years, across the world. During that time, he started to realize that what he was best at, and enjoyed most, was designing training. Since that realization, his last ten years of freelancing have been a process of ever-increasing specialization. First, focusing on training design, and more recently on designing learning experiences using games-based learning and gamification. Now that Terry is focusing on this, he feels like he has really found his passion. Terry has always played games and love working out how they tick, and he loved helping people 'get' ideas and develop their skills. Being a games-based learning designer and consultant brings the two together. How Women Can Develop & Improve Their Communication Skills to Engage & Influence Others Terry Pearce "Communication skills" has become a hackneyed phrase we hear over and over again, but what does it really mean? It's far more than being able to speak up at a meeting or give a client presentation that brings in the account. Communication refers to everything we say and write and do when interacting with someone else in any medium. It refers to how we share our ideas and our values, our ambitions and our disappointments—even how we have learned from our mistakes. People respond to everything they see in us. They listen to our stories, not unlike the way ancient tribes listened to the elders before thoughts and experiences were written down. It's vital that we know how to open ourselves to others, what to say and when to say it. When we control the communication, we steer people in the direction we want them to take. During the next 30 minutes, you'll hear an expert in both communication and leadership teach you the communication skills every successful woman must know. Terry Pearce: Leadership Communication Skills Expert Terry Pearce who once an executive at IBM, he has since taught leadership communication skills at the University of California-Berkeley, the Hass Graduate Business School (UC-Berkeley) and the London Business School. He co-authored "Clicks and Mortar: Passion-Driven Growth in an Internet-Driven World" with David Pottruck. His most-recent book, published in February, 2013, is the third edition of his best-selling "Leading Out Loud: A Guide for Engaging Others in Creating the Future." Terry Pearce Biography Terry Knows How Women Can Be Successful You will quickly pick up on Terry Pearce's gift for communicating abstract concepts in a very down-to-earth and practical way. He's easy to listen to and boils down years of working with a variety of people and companies into straightforward suggestions any of us can follow. Terry will leave you wanting to hear more! Executive Business Coach Sabrina Braham and Terry Pearce Discuss: The ways in which human beings are moved by "story-telling" and how we all can use stories in business. Why being feminine in a male-dominated workplace can be to your advantage. The ways leading women executives manage to achieve work-and-life balance in today's business culture. The three things that are the essence of leadership communication skills. Why women's vulnerability is an asset instead of being debility in the workplace. How and why your work experience, life experience and education should be incorporated into business conversations. The importance of telling stories that reveal who you are, what you consider valuable, and how you bring these values into every aspect of your life. Ways in which a simple, short and sincere thank you note can make a lifelong positive impression. "The future is not some place we are going, but one we are creating…."
