Excellent discussion and education related to Beef Nutrition.  This is the first of a two part series were we talk about protein and energy needs of cows and heifers during different times of year and reproduction.  We also discussed knowing your hay.  This discussion included hay testing, understanding test results, sampling, important results to make decisions on supplementation, examples of hay tested after the recent wildfires, testing variations and types of hay, risk avoidance from prussic acid and nitrates in certain hay, and frost/drought issues that might impact these risk factors.  Dr. Jason Smith, Extension Beef Cattle Specialist with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension led the discussion and provided outstanding information.   We will be following this program up with the second program focused on decisions on supplementation and feed sources available.  This should be a great followup to this program.

As producers and landowners are picking up the pieces after the Panhandle wildfires, there are a number of resources available to help.  This episode highlights those resources and provides infomration about how others who are interested can help in the recovery efforts. Dr. Bart Fischer from the Ag and Food Policy Center at Texas A&M University walks us through the various USDA programs for which those landowners and producers impacted by fires may qualify.   Dr. Monty Dozier explains the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension efforts on the ground, including the livestock supply points.  He also highlights ongoing needs for those who may wish to donate. I'm excited to have Dr. Jason Johnson, a District Economist for Texas A&M Agrilife Extension on the show today to talk about Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage Insurance, more commonly referred to as rainfall insurance.  As Dr. Johnson explains, this is an insurance product through the USDA Risk Management Agency that allows a producer to essentially insure average rainfall for his or her area, and receive an indemnity payment if no rainfall occurs.  This episode will provide an overview of the program and walks you through the four decisions that must be made in order to enroll.  We also talk about how to sign up, including the deadline to do so, who you can purchase through, and how the RMA shares in the premium cost. Today is an extremely important topic, not just for those of us involved in agriculture, but for everyone.  My colleague, Andy Crocker, is an Extension Program Specialist in Gerontology and Health with Texas A&M Agrilife Extension.  We talk about the importance of having conversations and thinking through our plans and desires concerning our end of life planning.  From determining who will serve as an agent under a Power of Attorney, to ensuring that everyone understands your wishes in an Advanced Healthcare Directive, there are a number of considerations and conversations that need to be had.  We also talk through several key documents that people should consider drafting, including the Advanced Healthcare Directive, medical Power of Attorney, Power of Attorney, and, depending on the circumstances, an Out-of-Hospital Do Not Resuscitate Order.  We discuss the difference in these documents and the requirements to draft them in Texas.
