Harvest USA Report with Howard Hale

Welcome to the Harvest USA Report. I'm Brian Hale. An original production of Howard Hale Broadcasting, now expanded throughout North America. The Harvest USA Report is brought to you by Hale Multimedia, the company behind Cattleman's Corner. Here's Custom Harvester David Meisner to tell us more about the U.S. Custom Harvesters. That's a pretty big organization isn't it?  "Yeah that's right, we've got membership all the way across the United States and even in other countries." And the Custom Harvester's annual convention just got over what at the end of February was it?  "Actually the end of January is when it was and yes and we had a good turnout in Des Moines and pleased with all the attendance that we had from our regular membership as well as our vendors and machinery manufacturers for instance like Krohn. Yes, Mr. Krohn was there in attendance himself, very nice, I mean can you even say you know, like Claas. Mrs. Claas has been there the past two years being there in attendance too and that's just really nice to have those individuals, and they recognize who the U.S. Custom Harvester Association is and the importance of it for the nation." That was Oklahoma Custom Harvester David Meisner. That's going to do it for today's Harvest USA report. Thanks again for listening and may God bless, I'm Brian Hale.

Welcome to the Harvest USA Report. I'm Brian Hale. An original production of Howard Hale Broadcasting now expanded throughout North America. The Harvest USA Report is brought to you by Hale Multimedia, the company behind Cattleman's Corner, Horseman's Corner and the Harvest USA Report. Let's continue our conversation with Oklahoma Custom Harvester David Meisner. Let's listen in. So does that put you on track then for a normal start in your season? "Time will tell. We've got a lot of time between now and then and see if it stays warm. Or if we get, seems like you've ever got some cool wet, then it just allows that wheat to take a little more time and stool if it does or just prolong that growing part and filling out and make more bushels in them kernels. So we'll just see how it comes along. But we definitely got, I think, a pretty good start and my farmers seem to be at least optimistic about the way the weather is for the start of the year." I also understand as a consultant or an advisor to the US Custom Harvesters that you're going to be in Washington soon. Is that correct? "Yeah, next week is National Ag Day. And so the US Custom Harvesters Board has been going to National Ag Day for quite a few years and we're going to go there and meet with some of our senators and representatives from across America and discuss some of the issues that we have with the Custom Harvesters Association and thoughts and ideas. And so we're going to see what we can do to continue to grow the relationships that we have with the individuals out there as well as discuss with some new individuals that we maybe haven't done yet." Oklahoma Custom Harvester, David Misener. Catch more from David on our website at harvesusareport.com. That's going to do it for today's Harvest USA Report. Welcome to the Harvest USA report. I'm Brian Head, an original production of Howard Hale Broadcasting now expanded throughout North America. The No-Till on the Plains Winter Conference is coming up January 21st through the 23rd. Now unfortunately that early bird pricing has expired but there's still time to get registered. That registration link is both on the website at notill.org and on their Facebook page if you're having issues with it there. Happy New Year from all of us at the Harvest USA report and from all of our co-hosts and guests. We've been ON-THE-AIR with our trio of Radio programs since 1994, beginning with Cattleman's Corner and Horseman's Corner, then the Harvest USA Report 3 years after that. We are beginning our 31st year on the radio and have expanded our programming. Visit HaleBroadcasting.com. We really appreciate the participation in our interviews as well as those who listen. And we'd like to thank the many guests that we've had on with very interesting information about different aspects of the cattle business. We've recently learned about things like red light technology, algae, crossbreeding cattle, the world's largest cow, digging up dinosaur bones on the ranch, flood irrigation in Arizona. This year on the Harvest USA report we also learned about pumpkins, cranberries and Christmas trees. Regardless of who the guest is or what the subject is we want to say thank you for listening and thank you to those who have taken the time to talk with us on the Harvest USA report. We look forward to talking to more of you this year and we dedicate this show today to the memory of Howard Hale who passed away in April of 2023. I'm humbly blessed by the opportunity to fill those big shoes. We've also had an outstanding year helping those advertise their business through the Harvest USA report as well as building websites, graphical ads, videos and audio ads for those involved in the world of agriculture. If you need help with any of those things or anything computer or marketing related give us a call. The numbers are on our website. That's going to do it for today's Harvest USA report. Thanks again for listening and may God bless. I'm Brian Hale.

With the rise of Avian flu, should consumers take caution when buying eggs? What do dietitians need to know about the safety of animal proteins? And why are egg prices so high? Andy Bishop, Kentucky farmer and ag lender, confirms that Avian flu is not transmitted via eggs, but that the spread of the virus has presented farmers with a variety of challenges.  From depopulation to misinformation, Avian flu hurts farmers' bottom line and impacts mental health. Also serving as the chair of the Cattleman's Beef Board in Kentucky, Bishop has plenty to say about the food landscape and how the term “plant-based” impacts consumer decisions. “Consumers are inundated with messaging based on social media algorithms that often spread false information. With the changes in the way we receive information, it is often difficult to discern what is true and what is not,” says Bishop. “The whole plant-based narrative amplifies the negative messaging surrounding true protein ‘Animal Protein'." Bishop also touches on his passion for agvocacy, how farming has shaped parenthood, and how “regenerative agriculture” is simply the way things have been done on his farm - and many others - for generations.  Visit Fairfield Farms Angus, which Bishop owns and operates with his wife, Meagan, and their four children on Instagram.

What if the way we source our food is putting our health and national security at risk? Bold statement, but Texas Slim, a pivotal figure in the Beef Initiative, argues that our centralized food systems are doing just that. Join us as we reconnect with Texas Slim, who's been on a mission across the U.S. and beyond, advocating for regenerative beef and decentralized access to quality food. He shares his eye-opening journey, rooted in his background in agricultural poverty and big tech, and how it led him to expose the alarming rise of food deserts in America.Facing the might of multinational corporations, independent ranchers are struggling against regulatory capture that strips them of their autonomy. We dive into the efforts spearheaded by the Beef Initiative to combat these obstacles and restore food security. Hear from experts like Brooke Miller, a seventh-generation rancher, on the significant progress made in decentralizing our food system despite these challenges. This segment underscores the critical importance of building resilient, community-based food networks and the steps we've taken over the past two years. However, the complexities don't end there. Despite abundant local cattle, much of it is exported while we import foreign beef and pork. Texas Slim sheds light on the paradox created by multinational corporations and government policies, including the troubling shift toward fake proteins and changes in food labeling laws. Learn how the Beef Initiative empowers individuals to make informed choices, fostering stronger connections with local producers. Welcome to the Cattlemen's Corner. I'm Brian Hale sitting in for the late Howard Hale as we continue his legacy of speaking with cattlemen and women from around the globe.Balancer cattle are registered hybrid seed stock that have documented pedigrees and expected progeny differences. Balancer animals are 25 to 75% Gelbvieh with the balance of Angus or Red Angus. Balancer cattle combine the gelvy growth, muscle, leanness, fertility, longevity and low yield grading ability with the carcass qualities of the Angus. Balancer cattle offer a simple and powerful way to maintain hybrid vigor and a profitable blend of British and continental genetics without a complicated crossbreeding system. We're talking the Keith Flake. He's a part in the Flake Ranches out south of Apache Junction. We're squeezed in here just east of Apache Junction or Mesa, Gold Canyon area between Apache Junction, Queen Creek, Florence Junction. About 50 sections of state lease we don't own in acre and part of it's being developed. Part of it is overrun with recreationists. The desert floor is brilliant green. How much rain did you get to get that grass cover? As I recall about three 1 inch rains and the spacing was pretty good.We figured the desert is going to make like crops, it's going to put on seed, but it comes fast and then when it turns 100 degrees, it goes fast. The mesquite beans there may be some or when you get a year without any rain the trees don't put any beans? Oh, it varies from year to year. I'll probably see the first bean in the middle of April and then it'll be another two or three weeks before there's much of a crop. We used to keep our to cows here year round and they were really bean harvesters. Beans are important to us. It's just not as important as they used to be when we were here year round.Arizona rancher Keith Flake. That's it for today's Cattleman's Corner. Thanks again for listening and may God bless. I'm Brian Hale.

If the commercial cattleman isn't successful, the breed isn't successful, and the American Angus Association Board of Director's investment of time on that segment reflects that. Updates on functional longevity and heart health research, projections and budgeting for the fiscal year, and FDA presentations on the gene edit approval process, labeling and processing — that and “a lot more” in this special episode that recaps the when, what and why of discussions at the August 2023 board meeting.  To read the president's summary, visit https://www.angus.org/pub/LetterFromthePresidentAug2023FINAL.pdf GUESTS:  Chuck Grove is no stranger to the Angus breed.
