Whether you're a basketball fanatic or just love a good redemption story, this classic film is packed with emotion, grit, and unforgettable moments.Directed by David Anspaugh and starring Gene Hackman, Hoosiers is the ultimate underdog story, inspired by the real-life 1954 Indiana state championship win of Milan High School. The film perfectly captures the essence of small-town basketball, where the sport is more than just a game—it's a way of life.Norman Dale (Gene Hackman) arrives in the tiny town of Hickory, Indiana, with a troubled past and a chance at redemption. Tasked with coaching the high school basketball team, he quickly faces resistance from the town's passionate residents, who are sceptical of his tough, unconventional methods. As he attempts to mold his players into a disciplined, team-first unit, Dale finds an unlikely ally in Shooter (Dennis Hopper), the town drunk and father of one of the players. Together, they battle personal demons and community pressure, leading the Hickory Huskers on an improbable journey to the state championship. At its core, Hoosiers is about more than just basketball. It's about resilience, discipline, and the power of believing in yourself—even when others doubt you. It also explores the way a community rallies behind its team, making it a deeply personal story for many viewers. From last-second buzzer-beaters to the struggles of redemption, Hoosiers is a film that continues to inspire generations. Whether you're a die-hard basketball fan or just love a well-told underdog story, it's a movie that proves heart and determination can take you further than anyone ever expected. So grab your playbook, rally the team, and join us for another classic review!

It's here where time flows a bit differently that relationships and healing move to a different cadence. In this conversation with Katie Munger, we wander through her journey of building a practice in a small town, where her work has become woven into the fabric of the community. Discussion of the climate crisis is always suffered from a problem of extraction, data points, and warnings of an overheated future struggle to break through the noise of everyday life. Deniers often portray climate solutions as inconvenient, expensive, and unnecessary. Many politicians cloistered by status and focused always on their next election do not yet see climate as a winning issue in the short run, so they don't take any action at all. Jonathan Vigliotti's book explores this, “Before It's Gone: Stories from the Frontlines of Climate Change and Small-Town America.”

Rerun: Using Climate Journalism to Connect Weather Events and Climate, with Jonathan Vigliotti

Staying Educated About Climate ChangeAs climate change intensifies, the heightened frequency of natural disaster weather-related events is quickly becoming the new reality. Whether it be prolonged wildfire seasons in Northern California or destructive hurricanes off the Florida coast, citizens across the country are beginning to bear the burden of a changing climate. For those of us yet to experience the full force of such events, our primary means of gathering information on natural disasters is through the media. Without the media's coverage of extreme climatic events, it is difficult for people not directly impacted to be fully aware of the dangers of a changing climate. While climate change impacts more people every year, severe impacts still feel like an abstract, distant concern that may never affect them personally. In order to reframe this perception, climate storytelling, which includes steps for action and recovery, is becoming foundational towards building empathy in the wake of the climate crisis. What is Climate Journalism?Climate journalism, the process of collecting and distributing accurate information on extreme weather events and climate change-related impacts, has been an essential element for informing the public about the effects of a changing climate. Following Al Gore's 2006 documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, climate journalism increased by 1,000 percent in the media from the year 2000. This increase in viewership is most likely attributed to the rise of ethical concerns relating to the climate crisis as more people began to suffer the effects of natural disasters. The majority of Americans, approximately 54%, now identify climate change as a major threat to the country's well-being. Media Matters found that news and morning shows such as ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox spent a total of around 23 hours discussing climate change in their annual 2022 reporting. Unfortunately, climate coverage still only accounts for around 1% of corporate broadcasting, even though the climate crisis is rapidly worsening.Keeping the Public Aware and PreparedClimate journalism not only raises awareness for the public, but can provide steps for change in combating one of the most pressing issues of our time. People need accurate information in order to make informed decisions. Strong, reliable reporting can provide citizens and policymakers the information needed to prepare for and adapt to the potential impacts climate change brings. Climate journalism can offer hope to the public, providing people with the voice and power to make a difference. By including climate change in the media, people can begin to see the incoming reality of this crisis, inspiring citizens to take action. The Struggles of Climate CoverageUnfortunately, there remain many obstacles that hold back media organizations from prioritizing climate coverage. Climate-related disasters can be hard to access, difficult to watch, and politically polarizing. Media outlets may struggle to gain large viewership, deterring them from covering climate events. Further, the various approaches to climate journalism can create discrepancies in the type of media coverage disseminated. For example, should climate topics be covered locally or nationally? What solutions should climate journalism focus on? Such a broad scope may distract from the realities currently being faced. Unfortunately, media coverage of environmental issues still only occupies a very small proportion of total media. There remains a need for increased resources, strategies, and investment in climate and environmental journalism. Further, many major news outlets publish misleading promotional content for fossil fuel corporations, greatly impacting the opinions of viewers on such controversial issues. There are, of course, many examples of excellent climate change coverage.  Our modest effort at Climate Break, as a small example, focusing on climate solutions and the wide variety of actions and initiatives being developed around the world, is designed to provide quick insights into climate solutions.  Who is Jonathan Vigliotti?Jonathan Vigliotti, CBS News correspondent, is just one example of the many climate journalists directly involved in the movement to inform the public on the effects of climate change. Vigliotti's work as an environmental journalist has taken him to over forty countries and territories across six continents. Author of Before It's Gone: Stories from the Front Lines of Climate Change in Small-Town America, provides personal insights into the everyday lives of Americans affected by climate change, presenting a compelling argument for the urgency of taking action now. Vigliotti believes that climate journalism has the power to spark change through the use of accurate, inspiring, and thought-provoking reporting. Further ReadingShäfer & Painter, Climate journalism in a changing media ecosystem: Assessing the production of climate change-related news around the world (WIREs Climate Change 2020)MacDonald, How broadcast TV networks covered climate change in 2022 (Media Matters)Tyson et al., What the data says about Americans' views of climate change (Pew Research Center, 2023)BBC, Why climate change should be at the heart of modern journalism (2023) For a transcript of this episode, please visit https://climatebreak.org/using-climate-journalism-to-connect-weather-events-and-climate-with-jonathan-vigliotti/

Sticking With Trump: CEO's Sign Makes a Big Statement in Small-Town America

Anthony Constantino grew up in Amsterdam, New York, at a time when the city was bustling with activity. In the years that followed, however, many of the manufacturing jobs disappeared, leaving its factories empty and its residents without work. Rather than flee upstate New York, Constantino instead co-founded Sticker Mule in 2010. The company makes products ranging from magnets and stickers (hence the name) to buttons and T-shirts. Today, it employs about 1,000 people in the Amsterdam area. And until recently, Sticker Mule was known for its products—not its politics. That changed on the day former President Donald Trump survived an assassin's bullet. Fed up with the hatred toward Trump, Constantino posted on Sticker Mule's X account an appeal to “help end the hate.” In that post on the night of July 13, he also declared his support for Trump. "I've been seeing the hate directed at President Trump and his supporters for the last eight years. And I don't like it,” Constantino told The Daily Signal in an interview Friday. “When a bullet hit President Trump, I spoke up, and I've been doing everything I can to try to stop the hate.” Since that fateful night in July, Constantino hasn't slowed down. This week, he unveiled a massive 100-foot-wide sign atop his Amsterdam factory along the Mohawk River. He spoke with The Daily Signal about the sign—and the controversy that ensued—for a special episode of our podcast. Illuminated in white and red letters, the “Vote for Trump” sign nearly landed Constantino in jail for allegedly violating zoning rules and distracting drivers. “As soon as the local Democrat mayor heard about the excitement and the enthusiasm for the sign, he got a restraining order issued against me, blocking me from displaying the sign under threat of jail time,” Constantino explained. “My lawyer said, Anthony, if you show that sign, you're going to end up in jail. I thought they were joking; they were serious.” A judge's last-minute order spared him. Monday's celebration proceeded as planned with thousands of onlookers. Constantino's new political action committee—Sticker PAC—produced a video casting the controversy as a “fight for free speech.” Even if Constantino's advocacy for Trump displeases some of Sticker Mule's customers, the CEO isn't planning to stay silent when it comes to politics. “I'm very proud of my organization for the way they've handled all this and they've endured all this. They stayed focused on doing exciting things for our customers, exciting things for the business,” he said. “Everyone stuck by my side. We haven't lost a single employee." Constantino told The Daily Signal that he remains motivated to stop the political division in America and bring the country together. He believes Trump is the leader who can do it.

Sequim––a quiet, coastal community just a couple hours away from Seattle––may seem like an unlikely microcosm for the rise of far-right politics. And yet, political journalist Sasha Abramsky has closely followed small-town communities, including Sequim, and argues that places like these have directly influenced current national politics. How could small-town USA be so instrumental in today's political climate, including Donald Trump's 2024 Republican presidential nomination? Abramsky argues that the far-right have worked to take control, using suspicion, conspiracy, and bigotry, and forming alliances of QAnoners, anti-vaxxers, Christian nationalists, and militia supporters within small towns across the country. Stemming from his latest book, Chaos Comes Calling, he investigates the rise of the far-right, telling the parallel stories of recent years in two communities: Shasta County, California and Sequim, Washington. The ultimate fates of these two towns were different though. Abramsky shows how Sequim has returned to less extreme political views, while Shasta County has descended further into intolerance and divisiveness. He highlights the differences between the communities, including the efforts to organize against the far-right movement. Places like Sequim may be small, but they may have huge ramifications in the national political scene. Abramsky believes there's a path forward from polarization that threatens to break apart communities, and towns as close as Sequim can show us how. Sasha Abramsky is a long-time political journalist and book author who has spent the last thirty years exploring the American political and social justice landscape. He has written extensively on poverty, criminal justice, immigration, and the rise of hard-right and alt-right political movements. Goshen, Indiana is home to a private college without an American Football team - and, most recently, a semi-professional soccer club that serves as an - albeit unusual - case study for how grassroots soccer in the U.S. can thrive and build a community. The overarching theme of The Assistant Professor is that football is not merely about goals and stars. It is, done properly, a participatory culture, an identity-forging community and even a political space. And to experience any of these aspects, it takes an active role of and for fans. That is possible, most easily, in local clubs. In a nutshell: support your local club. No country's soccer culture makes this vision harder than the U.S.'s - but perhaps no country has greater potential. How does a soccer club get born, in this culture? And can one bring the beautiful game and a local community together so it forges identity beyond stars and goals?Henrique Eichenberger will take us through the particular case study of Goshen. He is from Brazil, he played for and studied at the university I teach at, and he founded  Goshen City FC in 2022.HELPFUL LINKS FOR TODAY'S EPISODE:Goshen City FCGoshen College AthleticsThe Record, "GCFC Gears Up for Second Season"Goshen City FC (Facebook)R.E.M. - "Orange Crush" (Youtube video)Young Wonder - Orange (Youtube Video)Gilbert Becaud - L'Orange (Youtube video)Please leave a quick voicemail with any feedback, corrections, suggestions - or just greetings - HERE.

During the Great Migration, Black Americans sought new lives in midwestern small towns only to confront the pervasive efforts of white residents determined to maintain their area's preferred cultural and racial identity. Jennifer Sdunzik explores this widespread phenomenon by examining how it played out in one midwestern community. Sdunzik merges state and communal histories, interviews and analyses of population data, and spatial and ethnographic materials to create a rich public history that reclaims Black contributions and history. She also explores the conscious and unconscious white actions that all but erased Black Americans--and the terror and exclusion used against them--from the history of many midwestern communities. An innovative challenge to myth and perceived wisdom, The Geography of Hate: The Great Migration through Small-Town America (U Illinois Press, 2023) reveals the socioeconomic, political, and cultural forces that prevailed in midwestern towns and helps explain the systemic racism and endemic nativism that remain entrenched in American life.
