You'll learn why tailored strategies matter more than one-size-fits-all solutions and how to apply the findings to your own health journey. The Variety in PCOS PresentationThis episode highlights the wide variability in how PCOS presents itself. While one woman may struggle with acne and irregular cycles, another may be more affected by weight gain or fertility challenges. Yet underneath these symptoms, the same key root causes are to blame: the insulin effect, chronic inflammation, and oxidative stress. These root causes create hormonal imbalances, which drive the array of symptoms that make PCOS so challenging to diagnose and manage.Genetics and Environment in PCOS DevelopmentWhile PCOS has a genetic component, lifestyle factors heavily influence how and when it shows up. Nutrtion, movement routines, stress, and exposure to ultra-processed foods—especially during childhood—can activate genetic vulnerabilities. Understanding this interplay empowers you to make choices that can calm your symptoms and possibly reverse them altogether.Approaches for PCOS Symptom ManagementThe reviewed article explores a range of nutrition strategies, many of the recommendations seem contradictory, so finally this episode will help you will get clarity as to why and what to follow for your specific PCOS root causes and unique self. Often times, stress and anxiety are treated in ways to address the symptoms rather than the root causes. With emerging research and knowledge of the gut-brain connection, we are finding out that food is one of the most powerful forms of medicine we have to help with stress, anxiety, depression, and other experiences with mental and emotional health. Listen as Michael interviews Dr. Samara Sterling, Director of Research at The Peanut Institute, to learn strategies that will make your diet work for you, rather than inhibiting your health and healing. My experience of trauma was a unique one. I was born with a hormonal condition and I developed breasts in the 5th grade. Here I was; a boy with breasts. I was sexually assaulted, viciously bullied, & absolutely hated myself and my body.I coped with overeating, which led to a myriad of health complications. I had complex PTSD, Tourette Syndrome, high cholesterol, debilitating asthma, cystic acne, and I was 50 pounds overweight.A strange and surprising awakening occurred when I began writing music - and my healing journey began. I discovered herbs, whole foods, vegan nutrition, somatic therapy, and self-inquiry. All of which, over the course of 14 years, would completely heal my physical chronic illnesses and my mental and emotional trauma and shame. It's through that journey that I developed this unique holistic therapy that I call Holistic Life Navigation.

Dr. Jim Weinstein joins us in the first episode of the Watts Up Podcast. He is a board-certified sports dietitian and a Lieutenant Colonel with the United States Air Force. He has an impressive resume of cycling accolades, including his three times competing in the Race Across America.Basic nutritional guidelines for the endurance athlete are some of the most common requests that Chuck sees on Facebook. There are a few basic aspects that Dr. Weinstein says are the most important for athletes: hydration, eating healthy, and getting good sleep/recovery. Chuck shares what he is working with some of his athletes on and asks for Dr. Weinstein’s opinion on how they should hydrate.Prompted by a question about training on an empty stomach, Dr. Weinstein explains why short activities do not require the consumption of any calories. However, he brings up why this can be a grey area sometimes because of the differences between athletes. Dr. Weinstein then shares some tips on consuming carbs during longer events.Thinking about recovery starts the minute you begin exercising. We learn about data that suggests consuming protein while exercising is important before Dr. Weinstein goes through the ideal post-exercise meal. After, he addresses how to avoid overeating post-exercise.Dr. Weinstein reinforces that it’s important to work with your coach to make sure you’re getting the right information to build a healthy diet. He shares a great resource to learn about sports nutrition and promotes being careful of what you can read on the internet.Position Paper on Nutrition and Athletic Performance
