BMW Financial Services' lease penetration has normalized following the elimination of the federal electric vehicle tax credit, says Ole Jensen, chief executive and president of the captive in North America.  “We [have] slightly higher penetration when it comes to [battery EVs] in terms of leasing, because a lot of people [are] maybe uncertain about if they like the car, if they like the technology. They want to have the option of returning the car,” he says, adding that battery life concerns remain even as 3-year-old EVs come back to the manufacturer with 95% of battery life remaining. The captive's finance penetration sits at about 50% lease and 50% loan, Jensen says during a special episode of “The Roadmap Podcast.”  “I would predict that we see a further normalization ... because you will always have people who want to lease [and] you always have people who want to own the car,” he says.  Globally, the share of new BMW Group vehicles leased or financed through its financial services segment rose to 51.6% in the first quarter compared with 43% a year prior, according to the OEM's quarterly statement published May 6. Leasing penetration also varies regionally, Jensen says.  “We see very high lease shares on the East and on the West Coast, naturally,” he says. “Since the West Coast is so dominant in the BEV market still, with a higher leasing, that might be also driving currently our higher leasing penetration on BEV.” Despite lease volume normalizing, BMW Financial Services, along with parent company BMW Group, are investing in EVs. In fact, the manufacturer recently completed an expansion of its Plant Spartanburg in Greer, S.C., where it will assemble the next-generation BMW X5 line, which includes fully electric and hydrogen-powered versions. BMW Financial Services was the 12th-largest auto lender by outstandings at yearend 2025 with a portfolio of $43.1 billion, according to the latest Big Wheels ranking data. In this episode of “The Roadmap,” Auto Finance News editor Amanda Harris and Jensen discuss the electric vehicle landscape along with affordability, ancillary product demand, floorplan financing trends and technology investments.

Esta decisión responde al empeoramiento acelerado del mercado chino, así como a las consecuencias derivadas del conflicto en Irán. La compañía estima ahora que su beneficio antes de impuestos disminuirá por encima del 15%, lo que ha generado un impacto negativo no solo en su cotización en la Bolsa de Frankfurt, sino también en el conjunto del sector automovilístico. Ante este escenario adverso, la firma alemana ha optado por reaccionar con rapidez y reforzar su estrategia. Con el objetivo de recuperar terreno frente a sus competidores, ha decidido impulsar el lanzamiento de una renovada versión del BMW X5. Este modelo no se limita a ser una simple actualización, sino que introduce una propuesta innovadora al incorporar cinco sistemas de propulsión distintos, algo inédito hasta ahora dentro de la marca. El nuevo X5 contará con motorizaciones diésel y de gasolina, además de una variante híbrida enchufable. También incluirá, por primera vez, una opción completamente eléctrica, y se prevé que en 2028 llegue una versión impulsada por hidrógeno. Actualmente, el vehículo se encuentra en su etapa final de pruebas en la planta de Spartanburg, en Carolina del Sur, donde será producido. A diferencia de otros fabricantes, BMW mantiene su compromiso con la electrificación, lo que explica los recientes cambios en su cúpula directiva. En diciembre pasado, la empresa anunció la salida de Oliver Zipse como director ejecutivo tras siete años en el cargo. Su sustituto, Milan Nedeljkovic, proveniente del área de producción, ha sido clave en el desarrollo de vehículos eléctricos y de la nueva plataforma “Neue Klasse”. Prosecutors in Minnesota have upgraded charges against Steven Frane Bailey, 56, after he allegedly drove his BMW X5 through the patio of a crowded restaurant, killing two people and injuring nine others. The incident occurred on September 1 at Park Tavern in St. Louis Park, a suburb of Minneapolis. Bailey was initially charged with vehicular homicide and other drunk driving offenses. However, after reviewing surveillance footage, prosecutors added two counts of third-degree murder, citing his "depraved mind" in committing a dangerous act. According to a probable cause affidavit, Bailey hit a parked vehicle in the restaurant's lot before attempting to flee. As he accelerated, his SUV struck another vehicle and plowed through a metal fence into the restaurant's outdoor seating area. Authorities say Bailey showed no signs of braking as he drove through the patio, striking multiple people and tables. “After hitting the Black SUV, defendant accelerates straight past a two-lane drive in the parking lot and 11 parking spaces before plowing his vehicle through a metal fence and into the patio seating area,” detectives wrote. His vehicle finally stopped after hitting two boulders. Among the victims were Kristina Marie Folkerts, 30, who was trapped under the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, and Gabriel Quinn Harvey, 30, who died later at a hospital. According to the affidavit, Bailey stumbled from the car and fell. Officers reported hearing him say, “I'm f—-” and “I'm probably going to jail.” He also claimed he intended to brake but accidentally accelerated. His speech was slurred and his eyes were watery. When informed about the field sobriety tests, Bailey allegedly remarked, “You don't need to do fields, I know what I did.” The affidavit stated that Bailey had a blood alcohol content of .325, which is more than four times the legal limit of 0.08. After being taken to Hennepin County Jail, he was informed of the vehicular manslaughter charges. Bailey allegedly responded, “You've got to be kidding me” and “My life's pretty much f—– now, isn't it?” In addition to the murder charges, prosecutors are seeking an “upward sentencing departure” due to Bailey's five prior drunk driving convictions, his high blood alcohol level, and the presence of children at the restaurant during the crash. The community has rallied around the victims, raising over $200,000 for Folkerts' family through a GoFundMe campaign. Folkerts, a mother of three and a Park Tavern employee, was remembered for her passion for photography and her love for her daughters. Harvey, who worked as a health unit coordinator at Methodist Hospital, was also honored through fundraising efforts. He was set to graduate nursing school in December. The incident occurred at Lakeside at Town Center on Williams Drive. Officer Chuck McPhilamy stated that the attacker was someone known to Wollery, withholding the person's identity as authorities search for the suspect. Wollery's coworkers discovered her body when they visited her apartment after she failed to show up for work. The apartment was unlocked, and evidence suggests the suspect fled the scene after the attack. Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta at 404-577-8477. STORY 2: Mail processing in Georgia improving but delays continue Recently, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy updated U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff on improvements at USPS's Palmetto regional facility, stating 64.5% of first-class mail was delivered on time between May 18 and 24, up from a low of 35.8% in mid-March. Despite progress, delays persist due to past legislation and infrastructure challenges. DeJoy paused a restructuring plan, added staff to Palmetto, and adjusted transport schedules. Ossoff has advocated for resolution, noting ongoing issues for Georgia residents. DeJoy reported 85.4% of packages delivered on time as of May 31, with no delays in the June 9 primaries' mail-in ballots. STORY 3: 1 Killed, 1 Injured in Crash After Police Chase Early Monday morning, a car fleeing from Cobb Police crashed in a neighborhood north of Kennesaw State University, resulting in the death of the driver. The incident began when an officer attempted to stop a speeding 2013 BMW X5 on Barrett Parkway. The driver evaded the officer, prompting a pursuit that was quickly terminated due to safety concerns. The car subsequently veered off Frey Road, colliding with trees before coming to a stop in a wooded area. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cobb County Medical Examiner, while a passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized. Steven Dau of the Marietta Fire Department, have not determined the exact cause but stated there's no evidence of criminal activity. Residents reported rumors of someone grilling indoors, but this remains unconfirmed. Emergency responders helped evacuate residents like Stevie Ray Anderson and Jim McCurry, who alerted others and witnessed the fire's rapid spread. Guest host Brendan Appel of the Sons of Speed and Tom opened the show talking about a couple of new “The Lap” videos now posted on WeAreMotorDriven.com. The hosts then chatted briefly about the 2024 North American Car of the Year winners, which were revealed last week. Tom shared his concerns regarding misleading commercials being run by online used-car marketer DriveTime. Tom is specifically concerned about the company's assertion that users are able to negotiate the price of the vehicle they purchasing, which is not the case. Also addressed was the news that Stellantis has opted to pull out of a number of 2024 auto shows, including CES and Chicago.  Brendan and Tom went on to briefly share their impressions of the Genesis GV70 Electrified compact crossover. In the second segment the hosts welcome Genesis Manger of PR and Communications Jarred Pellat to the show. Jarred talked about the emergence of Genesis as a luxury brand, its success as an alternative premium-vehicle offering, and the brand's accessibility to women. Jarred also addressed the brand's EV plans moving forward. In the final segment Brendan is subjected to Tom's horsepower quiz, which included a bonus question about Twinkies. Tom wrapped up the show with a quick review of the ride and handling balance found on his current test car, the 2024 BMW X5 M60i.
