Ep. 106 In the Season 7 opener, Kelly Marie dives deep into the topic of movement and its foundational impact on overall wellbeing, with a focus on the role of sleep. Kelly engages with Soda Kuczkowski, sleep enthusiast and entrepreneur, in a conversation that offers practical tips on setting up a successful sleep environment, the ramifications of screen time before bed, and the implications of caffeine consumption on sleep quality. With practical advice grounded in scientific knowledge, this episode is filled with actionable insights to help listeners forge a harmonious relationship between their movement throughout the day and their rest during the night. "A good night's sleep starts the minute that you wake up." - Soda Kuczkowski Key Takeaways: Setting Up a Sleep-Positive Environment: Prioritizing your sleep space with dimmable lights, darkening blinds, and a dust-free room can substantially increase sleep quality. The Impact of Blue Light: Technology can be both a sleep aid and a hindrance. Blue light exposure from screens should be managed to support our natural sleep-wake cycle. The Exercise-Sleep Connection: Exercise is beneficial for sleep, but timing matters. Avoid strenuous activity close to bedtime and opt for gentle movements like yoga or stretching. Caffeine's Role in Sleep: Caffeine can reduce the depth of sleep by 20% and suppress the production of melatonin. It's essential to understand one's personal sensitivity to caffeine. The Importance of Morning Routines: A good night's sleep starts with how you wake up. Exposure to natural light and morning stretches can set a positive tone for the day and improve sleep. Whether a superstar, making a living, or barely making any money at all, every musician must assess and reassess whether it's worth it to continue, and if so, how. The bottom line is … the bottom line. All artists need money. Money to create. Money to live. Most of us don't make much, and have to supplement our incomes. Or worse yet, we're urged to ask for money from fans, friends & family – people who often have as little as we do. I gave this a lot of thought, and realized there's a solution. I called it THE $50,000 MANIFESTO, and published it on social a couple of years ago. To our ears it might sound radical, even outrageous. But it's not unprecedented. Plenty of countries and eras have implemented it. So on PODFAST 18, I'm going to read my manifesto in full. STREAM IT EVERYWHERE In Part 4 of my history of albums, we've made it to the 1980s. The 1980s are considered a big decade for singles, so we often forget that some of the greatest and biggest selling albums were released then. I talk about those albums, as well as lesser known notable albums, and how technology influenced their crafting. As synths and recording became more and more affordable, artists were able to take more control over how an album was produced and crafted. This created the first true underground scenes, and split music and album development between the big stars of the industry pop machine and smaller artists of the indie label scenes. STREAM IT EVERYWHERE In Part 3 of my history of albums, we get to the big one: the 1970s. If the album can be said to have had a heyday (and I say nay), this is the decade when it happened.
