Kelly encourages listeners to approach resolutions with mindfulness and self-acceptance, rather than setting unrealistic goals. She explores the origins of New Year's resolutions and the low success rate of keeping them. Key Takeaways: New Year's resolutions have a low success rate, with only 8% of Americans keeping them. The origins of New Year's resolutions can be traced back to the Babylonians, Julius Caesar, and Wesleyan Christians. Instead of setting concrete resolutions, adopt a mindful approach to personal growth. Be kinder and more forgiving to yourself, and accept the present moment. Resolve to find joy and be the light in your own life. Quotes: "You are not unsuccessful. You are not a poor human being if you make a resolution and don't keep it." Ep. 93 Merry fucking Christmas. Welcome to the Healthy Illness podcast. I am your host, Kelly Marie, and today we're going to dive into the most wonderful time of the year. Or is it? In this episode, we'll explore the complex relationship many of us have with the holiday season, particularly Christmas. As someone who lives with mental health conditions, I understand the challenges that can arise during this time. But I also believe that we can build healthier relationships and find peace amidst the chaos. So, let's dive in. Key Takeaways: Christmas can be a challenging time for many people, and it's important to set boundaries and experience it your way! The pressure to give extravagant gifts and create the perfect holiday experience can be overwhelming and not sustainable. Love, kindness, and generosity should be practiced every day, not just during the holiday season. It's important to evaluate why you celebrate the holidays and focus on what brings you joy and healing. Mindfulness involves accepting and being present in the moment, without judgment. Quotes: "Love me today or not at all." "Everything that brings you peace may not bring you joy." "Feelings are not facts." "Be okay with wherever you are." "Focus on mindfulness and being present in the moment."

However, silent walking is the practice of emerging yourself in the present moment and engaging with the things that are right in front of you. That may be seeing the cracks in the sidewalk or noticing the composition of the trail that you're on.  It can be noting what the trees look like or how many people are out on the street today. It's really all about focusing on your surroundings versus focusing on distractions like music or talking to someone to pass the time away. To get started, the experts recommend keeping things simple:  Walk in a nearby quiet area, hopefully somewhere in nature or outdoors. It's also best to pick a time when you know there will be minimal people or activity around that area to distract you. Take care of basic bodily needs, such as thirst and hunger, beforehand, so they don't become a distraction.  Make sure it's just you and your thoughts. No phone, no walking buddy, no dog. Focus on your feelings, breathing and the surrounding beauty. Be mindful of each breath and each step, listen to the sounds of nature around you, feel gratitude for the sun kissing your skin, and use the time for reflection.

It happens through hormonal and physiological changes that allow you to act quickly so you can protect yourself.  The fight-flight-freeze response is a type of stress response that helps you react to perceived threats, like an oncoming car or a growling dog. It's a survival instinct that our ancient ancestors developed many years ago. It's been 10 years since Kelly Marie's last suicide attempt. This is the first time she's forgotten the anniversary. August and the beginning of September are usually emotionally sensitive for her but this year has not had the same impact.  What's also common is forced remembrance. Making you or someone else remember a time they would otherwise forget. Kelly Marie practiced forced remembrance in order to remain on an active healing path.  This may not be the healthiest practice and is one that she is no longer pushing herself to participate in. By offering yourself grace, patience and kindness while you build emotional safety you are creating an internal safe space to process, grow and heal. If you have already reached the active healing milestone, hold space for folks doing their best to get there. Together we can all #bethelight.

Ep. 81 In this episode, Kelly Marie dives into the possibility of being misdiagnosed, AGAIN!  Does she actually live with borderline personality disorder or is she autistic? Maybe there's another diagnosis that is a better fit, like complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). The goal of this episode is to help you understand your own misdiagnosis and to give yourself grace and the ability to accept you for where you are regardless of what box you may or may not check. Living with a mental health illness or condition isn't an easy journey. Kelly Marie has lived with several mental health diagnoses and has made it her mission to live a life that shares her journey with the world. Originally diagnosed with postpartum depression, then bipolar disorder, Kelly was finally diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) in addition to depression and generalized anxiety. Ep. 79 As a society, we are often influenced to do things a certain way because of tradition, social media and even depictions on television. But have you ever stopped to think of who is actually behind those motivations and is there a better way for YOU to accomplish the same goals? For example, does your cleaning and cooking rituals make the food taste better or the housework easier? Or do you simply listen to music while cleaning up on a Saturday morning because it's what your mom always did?  Who says you have to do it in any particular way?   In this episode of the Healthy Illness podcast, you will learn a new tool we're calling the “Says Who?” tool. The “Says Who?” tool walks you through four questions to answer to evaluate if and how you're doing a thing is the best way for you.       Who said I have to do it this way?       Why am I doing it this way?       How can I do this in a way that is best for me?       Is this new way better or can I think of another way to do it? You can use these four questions to examine the best ways to live life. This is all a journey and what works for you may not work for someone else. However, healthy illness host Kelly Marie, leads you through examining these four questions to determine the best way for you to do what's best for you.   Learn more about healthy illness podcast and how host Kelly Marie manages living with mental health challenges by listening to several episodes around this same topic period episode 60 Dirty Dishes and Wardrobe Malfunctions https://thefrontseatlife.podbean.com/e/dirty-dishes-wardrobe-malfunctions/  and episode 64 Depression Life Hack: Cleaning Your Room Without Getting Out of the Bed. https://thefrontseatlife.podbean.com/e/depression-life-hack-cleaning-your-room-without-getting-out-of-bed/   RESOURCES Click Here to rate & review on Apple Podcast  Rate & Share this Podcast from Spotify Add this show to your collection on Pandora. 10 Self-Advocacy Steps for Health and Recovery

Ep. 77  Advocating for yourself is an important step in taking control of your well-being. It's one of the tools in the self-care toolbox you can use.  In this episode, Kelly Marie gives you her top 10 self-advocacy steps and discusses the ways she used many of them to help her manage her mobility issues, spinal surgery and recovery. Remember, advocating for your health is an ongoing process. Stay proactive, stay informed, and stay engaged in your own journey. Educate Yourself: Learn about your medical condition or concern. Understand the symptoms, treatments, and potential alternatives. Research reputable sources, consult medical professionals, and join support groups or online communities to gather information and insights. Clearly Communicate: When discussing your health with healthcare providers, be clear and concise about your symptoms, concerns, and questions. Describe your symptoms in detail, provide a comprehensive medical history, and express any worries or doubts you may have. Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask questions about your health condition, treatment options, potential side effects, and recovery process. Seek clarification if something is unclear. Asking questions helps you gain a better understanding of your situation and empowers you to make informed decisions. *Pro tip: Use your phone's notetaking feature to jot down questions. You'll always have them with you when you see your health professional. Build a Supportive Healthcare Team: Choose healthcare providers who listen to your concerns and respect your input. A supportive team includes doctors, nurses, specialists, and other professionals who collaborate with you to make decisions about your health. If you feel unheard or dismissed, consider seeking a second opinion. Keep Records: Maintain organized records of your medical history, including test results, diagnoses, treatments, and medications. This documentation will help you track your progress, communicate effectively with healthcare providers, and have a comprehensive overview of your health. *Pro tip: see #3 Be Proactive: Take an active role in your healthcare. Stay informed about new research, treatments, or alternative therapies related to your condition. Advocate for preventative measures and screenings. Seek Second Opinions: If you receive a significant diagnosis or face a complex medical decision, don't hesitate to seek a second opinion. Another perspective can provide valuable insights and confirm the best course of action. Engage in Shared Decision-Making: Collaborate with your healthcare team in making decisions about your health. Share your preferences, values, and concerns, and work together to develop a treatment plan that aligns with your goals and lifestyle. Understand Your Rights: Familiarize yourself with your rights as a patient. Research laws and regulations related to healthcare, privacy, and informed consent. Knowing your rights will help you advocate for yourself effectively. Utilize Support Networks: Connect with advocacy groups, patient organizations, and support networks related to your health condition. These groups can provide valuable resources, information, and emotional support during your healthcare journey.
