What is health and why do we get sick? In this episode, we're going to discuss what makes up a person's health and the risk factors of disease and why those health drivers overly impact black and brown residents of Erie and Monroe Counties. By the end of the podcast, you will be able to identify the social determinants of health and understand how those social determinants of health have an impact on your health. Welcome to the Healthy Illness podcast. Health is multifaceted, with only 30% attributed to personal health behaviors, while the remaining 70% is influenced by social determinants of health. These include economic stability, education quality, neighborhood environment, access to healthcare, and social support systems. These external factors shape our ability to make healthy lifestyle choices and access necessary healthcare services. This episode is brought to you by Hustle for Health Programs, with support from Health Research Incorporated and New York State Health Department. SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH  Social Determinants of Health - Healthy People 2030 | health.gov Social determinants of health (SDOH) have a major impact on people's health, well-being, and quality of life. Examples of SDOH include: Safe housing, transportation, and neighborhoods Racism, discrimination, and violence Education, job opportunities, and income Access to nutritious foods and physical activity opportunities Polluted air and water Language and literacy skills SDOH also contribute to wide health disparities and inequities. For example, people who don't have access to grocery stores with healthy foods are less likely to have good nutrition. That raises their risk of health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity — and even lowers life expectancy relative to people who do have access to healthy foods. Just promoting healthy choices won't eliminate these and other health disparities. Instead, public health organizations and their partners in sectors like education, transportation, and housing need to take action to improve the conditions in people's environments.  Learn more about your ad choices. She explores the origins of New Year's resolutions and the low success rate of keeping them. Key Takeaways: New Year's resolutions have a low success rate, with only 8% of Americans keeping them. The origins of New Year's resolutions can be traced back to the Babylonians, Julius Caesar, and Wesleyan Christians. Instead of setting concrete resolutions, adopt a mindful approach to personal growth. Be kinder and more forgiving to yourself, and accept the present moment. Resolve to find joy and be the light in your own life. Quotes: "You are not unsuccessful. You are not a poor human being if you make a resolution and don't keep it." In this episode, we'll explore the complex relationship many of us have with the holiday season, particularly Christmas. As someone who lives with mental health conditions, I understand the challenges that can arise during this time. But I also believe that we can build healthier relationships and find peace amidst the chaos. So, let's dive in. Key Takeaways: Christmas can be a challenging time for many people, and it's important to set boundaries and experience it your way! The pressure to give extravagant gifts and create the perfect holiday experience can be overwhelming and not sustainable. Love, kindness, and generosity should be practiced every day, not just during the holiday season. It's important to evaluate why you celebrate the holidays and focus on what brings you joy and healing. Mindfulness involves accepting and being present in the moment, without judgment. Quotes: "Love me today or not at all." "Everything that brings you peace may not bring you joy." "Feelings are not facts." "Be okay with wherever you are." "Focus on mindfulness and being present in the moment."

However, silent walking is the practice of emerging yourself in the present moment and engaging with the things that are right in front of you. That may be seeing the cracks in the sidewalk or noticing the composition of the trail that you're on.  It can be noting what the trees look like or how many people are out on the street today. It's really all about focusing on your surroundings versus focusing on distractions like music or talking to someone to pass the time away. To get started, the experts recommend keeping things simple:  Walk in a nearby quiet area, hopefully somewhere in nature or outdoors. It's also best to pick a time when you know there will be minimal people or activity around that area to distract you. Take care of basic bodily needs, such as thirst and hunger, beforehand, so they don't become a distraction.  Make sure it's just you and your thoughts. No phone, no walking buddy, no dog. Focus on your feelings, breathing and the surrounding beauty. Be mindful of each breath and each step, listen to the sounds of nature around you, feel gratitude for the sun kissing your skin, and use the time for reflection.

Ep. 79 As a society, we are often influenced to do things a certain way because of tradition, social media and even depictions on television. But have you ever stopped to think of who is actually behind those motivations and is there a better way for YOU to accomplish the same goals? For example, does your cleaning and cooking rituals make the food taste better or the housework easier? Or do you simply listen to music while cleaning up on a Saturday morning because it's what your mom always did?  Who says you have to do it in any particular way?   In this episode of the Healthy Illness podcast, you will learn a new tool we're calling the “Says Who?” tool. The “Says Who?” tool walks you through four questions to answer to evaluate if and how you're doing a thing is the best way for you.       Who said I have to do it this way?       Why am I doing it this way?       How can I do this in a way that is best for me?       Is this new way better or can I think of another way to do it? You can use these four questions to examine the best ways to live life. This is all a journey and what works for you may not work for someone else. However, healthy illness host Kelly Marie, leads you through examining these four questions to determine the best way for you to do what's best for you.   Learn more about healthy illness podcast and how host Kelly Marie manages living with mental health challenges by listening to several episodes around this same topic period episode 60 Dirty Dishes and Wardrobe Malfunctions https://thefrontseatlife.podbean.com/e/dirty-dishes-wardrobe-malfunctions/  and episode 64 Depression Life Hack: Cleaning Your Room Without Getting Out of the Bed. https://thefrontseatlife.podbean.com/e/depression-life-hack-cleaning-your-room-without-getting-out-of-bed/   RESOURCES Click Here to rate & review on Apple Podcast  Rate & Share this Podcast from Spotify Add this show to your collection on Pandora. Ep. 78 Join Coach Kelly Marie as she confronts her anxiety around the thought of taking her bike out for a ride for the first time in over a year. This powerful episode holds nothing back as she deals with the emotional and physical stress associated with her anxiety. Learn how to implement the tools and ask for the help you need.   My doctor cleared me to ride my bike after back surgery, but my anxiety has kept me from going on a ride around the block! I'm physically healthy enough to take a bike ride, but mentally I'm paralyzed. It's time to implement the tools. Step one is acknowledging the symptoms.  Anxiety, the body's response to stress, is how your body alerts you to threats and helps you get ready to deal with them. The autonomic nervous system produces your fight-or-flight response, which is designed to help you defend yourself or run away from danger. When you are under stress or anxious, this system kicks into action, and physical symptoms can appear — headaches, nausea, shortness of breath, shakiness, or stomach pain.   Click Here to rate & review on Apple Podcast  Rate & Share this Podcast from Spotify Add this show to your collection on Pandora. 10 Self-Advocacy Steps for Health and Recovery

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2023 20:59

Ep. 77  Advocating for yourself is an important step in taking control of your well-being. It's one of the tools in the self-care toolbox you can use.  In this episode, Kelly Marie gives you her top 10 self-advocacy steps and discusses the ways she used many of them to help her manage her mobility issues, spinal surgery and recovery. Remember, advocating for your health is an ongoing process. Stay proactive, stay informed, and stay engaged in your own journey. Educate Yourself: Learn about your medical condition or concern. Understand the symptoms, treatments, and potential alternatives. Research reputable sources, consult medical professionals, and join support groups or online communities to gather information and insights. Clearly Communicate: When discussing your health with healthcare providers, be clear and concise about your symptoms, concerns, and questions. Describe your symptoms in detail, provide a comprehensive medical history, and express any worries or doubts you may have. Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask questions about your health condition, treatment options, potential side effects, and recovery process. Seek clarification if something is unclear. Asking questions helps you gain a better understanding of your situation and empowers you to make informed decisions. *Pro tip: Use your phone's notetaking feature to jot down questions. You'll always have them with you when you see your health professional. Build a Supportive Healthcare Team: Choose healthcare providers who listen to your concerns and respect your input. A supportive team includes doctors, nurses, specialists, and other professionals who collaborate with you to make decisions about your health. If you feel unheard or dismissed, consider seeking a second opinion. Keep Records: Maintain organized records of your medical history, including test results, diagnoses, treatments, and medications. This documentation will help you track your progress, communicate effectively with healthcare providers, and have a comprehensive overview of your health. *Pro tip: see #3 Be Proactive: Take an active role in your healthcare. Stay informed about new research, treatments, or alternative therapies related to your condition. Advocate for preventative measures and screenings. Seek Second Opinions: If you receive a significant diagnosis or face a complex medical decision, don't hesitate to seek a second opinion. Another perspective can provide valuable insights and confirm the best course of action. Engage in Shared Decision-Making: Collaborate with your healthcare team in making decisions about your health. Share your preferences, values, and concerns, and work together to develop a treatment plan that aligns with your goals and lifestyle. Understand Your Rights: Familiarize yourself with your rights as a patient. Research laws and regulations related to healthcare, privacy, and informed consent. Knowing your rights will help you advocate for yourself effectively. Utilize Support Networks: Connect with advocacy groups, patient organizations, and support networks related to your health condition. These groups can provide valuable resources, information, and emotional support during your healthcare journey. ”I'm Not a Kid Anymore”: 6 Steps to Setting Boundaries with Mom

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2023 29:01

Ep. 76 Learning to set and implement boundaries can be difficult for many people. It's even more difficult with people you care about. Those closest to us know our strengths and weaknesses and may not believe the boundary you are setting is necessary causing stress to you and your relationship.  However challenging, it is essential for your well-being. During Kelly Marie's recovery from spinal laminectomy and fusion, she had to assert herself and implement all of the tools she so regularly talks about. Not only did it not work, but she was concerned about the effects the process would have on her recovery journey. Wiping tears from her eyes, she dug deep, stood firm, prioritised her healing, and was able to establish the boundary and maintain her relationship. Here are 6 steps you can take to set boundaries with those closest to you: Reflect on your why: Take time to identify your personal boundaries, what is important to you and why. Understand your limits, values, and needs. This self-awareness will provide a solid foundation for establishing and communicating your boundaries effectively. Be clear and firm: Clearly and assertively express your boundaries to the person. Use "I" statements to express how their behavior or actions impact you. Be direct, firm, and respectful of your relationship. Pro tip: Avoid apologizing or justifying the boundary. Be consistent: Consistency is key when setting boundaries. Make sure to reinforce your boundaries consistently over time. People may test or push your boundaries initially, but by consistently sticking to them, you send a clear message that your needs are non-negotiable. Seek support: It can be helpful to seek support from someone you trust. Discuss your challenges and strategies for setting boundaries. They can hold space for you, offer advice, and encourage you throughout the process. Seek professional help if needed: If you're finding it challenging to set boundaries or facing ongoing difficulties with someone not respecting your boundaries, consider seeking the help of a therapist or counselor. They can provide guidance, support, and strategies for your specific situation. Practice self-care (this is really number 1 and the overall reason for setting boundaries in the first place): Prioritize self-care to maintain your well-being. Taking care of yourself strengthens your ability to establish and uphold boundaries. Engage in activities that recharge you, like setting aside time for self-reflection. Be kind to yourself and give you the grace you give others. Remember that setting and maintaining boundaries is a process that takes time and practice. It's normal to encounter resistance or discomfort but prioritizing your well-being and advocating for your boundaries is an important part of self-care. Stay committed to yourself and your boundaries and surround yourself with people who respect and value your limits.   Credits Hosted by Coach Kelly Marie, founder of Front Seat Life LLC IG @thefrontseatlife FB @thefrontseatlife Email FrontSeatLife@gmail.com  Produced & edited by JazzCast Pros Riverside.FM Promo Code JAZZYCAST for 15% off Remote Recording    Resources Click Here to rate & review on Apple Podcast  Rate & Share this Podcast from Spotify Add this show to your collection on Pandora. Ep. 73 How do we get rid of the mean girl persona? How do we become better people in the workplace and amongst our friends and family? How do we become unified as human beings living this life? We start with self-care. Mean Girls exist because there are issues that need to be addressed within each and every one of us. Everyone has issues. These types of mean girl dynamics exist because we have not addressed our issues. One of the things many of us have not addressed is the roles that people have in our lives. We are sometimes surrounded by people that shouldn't be in our sphere or if they are supposed to be there, we put them in the wrong place which causes us to be out of alignment. Self-care can look like putting people in the right place. Self-care can look like removing people from ours sphere of influence. It is understanding where someone should be and what place they should occupy in your life.   Credits Hosted by Coach Kelly Marie, founder of Front Seat Life LLC IG @thefrontseatlife FB @thefrontseatlife Email FrontSeatLife@gmail.com  Produced & edited by Jazzy T IG @Jazzytonair    Click Here to rate & review on Apple Podcast  Rate & Share this Podcast from Spotify Add this show to your collection on Pandora. 7 Journaling Strategies for Self-Improvement

Ep. 72  Journaling is a powerful tool and can be really effective in assisting you with your mental health. It's a popular tool used in DBT for emotional regulation. In this episode Coach Kelly Marie shares seven simple steps to help get your thoughts out of your head and onto the paper.  Whether you keep a daily journal or simply jot down notes to yourself when ideas come, this technique can have a powerful impact on your journey to better relationships with yourself & others. Write quickly and passionately. Let the ideas flow onto the paper without dwelling on one thing for too long. Don't worry about grammar or spelling. The goal is to get the words out!   Write consistently. You may not be an everyday writer, but having a routine to keep your journal flowing is a great strategy. When you write on a daily or weekly basis, you'll find a greater consistency to your thoughts and reflections. It can also be used to track any cycles or patterns of thought or actions in your life.   Set goals and reflect on them. Outline your most important self-improvement goals when you begin your journaling experience. Reflect on them often to determine whether or not you're taking active steps toward achieving them.   Be honest. You're talking to you! You can be completely honest in your journal because no one else will read it but you.  If having a written journal scares you or if you are unsure if your thoughts will remain private, you can write and release! Write down your thoughts and rip up the page after you're done. You can also try and take a picture of your journal entry and store it in a secure folder on your phone or in the cloud.  Ask yourself tough questions. This is all about you building healthier relationships. Easy questions are easy to answer. Asking yourself the tough questions can aid significantly in the reflection process.    Refer back to your past entries. When you have a bad day, look at your positive writing to ease your thoughts. When you feel lost or unsure about yourself, look back over your goals and insights to find guidance.   Choose a journal that's right for you. Select a journal that resonates within you, something that you feel comfortable and confident writing in. You can purchase a journal from a bookstore, create your own, use an app or simply collect loose pages in a binder. The right journal for you will inspire you to use it. Ep. 69 What's the difference between a mental health condition and a mental illness? A mental health illness has to be diagnosed by a licensed mental health professional or other medical professional. A person cannot diagnose themselves with a mental illness. However, a mental health condition is really any moment in time that someone is dealing with the effects of lower mental health status. One in five Americans will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime. This includes things like grief, bouts of sadness.  Examples of mental health illnesses that I personally have been diagnosed with include major depression and bipolar disorder. Black Women & Depression: Understanding Our Differences

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 5, 2023 17:46

Ep. 68 Struggling with clinical depression, a resilient Black woman strives to be seen and heard in a world that demands she be "stronger than everyone else," uncovering research that reveals how Black women experience depression differently than White women.  "Healing is possible, recovery is possible, and you can live a full, complete and healthy life while also managing living with mental health conditions." As a black woman living with depression, I was intrigued when I came across an article about the signs of depression in black women. After reading the research done at NYU and Columbia, I could relate to the symptoms of self-hatred, self-blame, and the inability to experience pleasure. This research opened my eyes to the fact that there is a medical mistrust among black and brown communities and that this mistrust can contribute to people not seeking help for mental health conditions. I'm now committed to creating safer and more forgiving environments in my family and community to help those in need seek the help they deserve. In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. How the signs and symptoms of depression manifest differently in Black women.  2. Why people of color often do not seek mental health or medical treatment.  3. What we can do to foster more healing communities, rooted in addressing the effects of racism?   Credits Hosted by Coach Kelly Marie, founder of Front Seat Life LLC IG @thefrontseatlife FB @thefrontseatlife Email FrontSeatLife@gmail.com  Produced & Edited by Jazzy T IG @Jazzytonair    Resources  NYU Study Depression May Look Different in Black Women  Suicide Prevention Helpline has someone for you to talk to 24/7 call  988 Text GO to 741741 to reach a trained crisis counselor  Call 211 or visit www.211.org for help finding public services in your area Podcast Like a Pro!
